Yu Yǒng-mo's theological understanding of God and spiritualityKim, Chanhong 12 March 2016 (has links)
Yong-mo Yu (1890-1981) was a supporter of religious pluralism in Korea, advocating for a syncretistic conception of God; and for interfaith spiritual renewal, during a period marked by the rejection of these concepts. A study of his work enriches our conception of the 20th century Korean Christianity. The main goal of my dissertation is to first analyze Yu's theological understanding of God and examine it in relation to the three East Asian major religious traditions as well as a Western ontological understanding of the ultimate reality; and second, through such analyses, to discuss the significance and challenges of Yu's pluralistic theology and spirituality.
Yu's own definition of God as Opshi-gyeshin-Haneunim (God who exists as Non-Being) is an ontological understanding of the ultimate reality, which is very different from conservative Korean Protestantism's understanding of God. Yu's understanding of God is very similar to Robert C. Neville's understanding of God as the creator in that both of them define the ultimate reality as absolute Nothingness or Emptiness transcending both being and non-being. Yu's understanding of God was also based on the East Asian religious traditions which are Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism. Therefore, Yu defines Christian God as T'ai-chi and Wu-chi, nothingness, and Tao which are concepts that Yu borrows from the East Asian religions.
Yu's concept of God as Opshi-gyeshin-Haneunim was formed and developed based on his own spiritual experiences, for example, his experience of spiritual union with God. At the same time, his theological reflection on the ultimate reality also had great effect on his spirituality. In the same tenor, the pluralistic characteristics of Yu's theology and spirituality are the result of Yu's creative combination of his ontological understanding of the ultimate reality transcending various religious contexts and the East Asian spirituality focusing on spiritual discipline to develop the divine power given to human beings.
Yu's creative integration of the ontological analysis of God and the East Asian spiritual tradition can provide a new perspective to Korean conservative Protestantism in understanding other religions, and suggest a new type Christian spirituality in plural Korean contexts. / 2017-01-12T00:00:00Z

Religious mobility is a recent phenomenon and has become one of the main factors which modify the Brazilian religious field, which can be characterized by a scenario of religious diversification and pluralism. In modernity, the modifications in the field produce new configurations of religion, of believing and of belonging. The traditional churches are reached by these movements, especially in the urban areas. In this sense, this theses deals with the adhesion to the Igreja Evangélica de Confissão Luterana no Brasil (IECLB) [Evangelical Church of Lutheran Confession in Brazil] in urban congregations, through an empirical-qualitative research which addresses the religious journeys and modalities of belonging and joining in three congregations which served as a case study. Besides the religious journeys, we sought to decipher the motivations, the levels of participation and integration, the exclusive or twofold relation with the chosen religious community. We problematized the phenomenon of religious migration through concepts such as conversion, passage or joining, in a religious field in which adhesion by attribution loses space to acquired adhesion. The survey of data points to religious mobility which propitiates different modalities of aggregation and belonging comprehended by the new religious identity, revealing adhesions by family (Sapucaia do Sul/RS), by individuals (São Luís/MA), or momentary, partial and mobile (Rio de Janeiro/RJ). We identified that the religious migration and adhesion, in these congregations, through family or personal choice, reveal that the transmitter element of religion no longer occurs through symbolic ties, such as tradition and ethnicity, which reveals a church which, slowly, is changing, in the Brazilian context, substituting these traditional elements of adhesion with theological and confessional ones, for an open and universal ecclesial proposal. In this sense, based on the case studies, we list challenges and opportunities for urban congregations of the IECLB, which, upon receiving persons with dynamic and accentuated religious journeys, becomes a chosen religious space for living out the faith.

This dissertation is to draw some epistemological assumptions for the dialogue between Christians and Muslims. Divided into five chapters, this dissertation begins with the concept it of dialogue in the light of the thoughts of Martin Buber and Paulo Freire. In this chapter, is defined what is inter-religious dialogue, differentiating it from ecumenism. Then, the summary of major inter-religious encounters occurred in the world since the First World Parliament of Religions held in Chicago, USA, in the year 1893 up to the World Day of Prayer held in Assis, Italy, in 1986 was given. In the second, the pluralistic theologies of John Hick and John Spong are used for a new understanding of the divine incarnation of Jesus Christ in a metaphorical significance of this fact and for the inter-religious dialogue. In the third chapter, it is shown that the Muslim world, through its theologians, has also sought to update its theological basis, reinterpreting some foundations of the Koran and Sharia. In the fourth chapter, it is discussed the necessity of inter-religious dialogue in the light of the philosophies of alterity of Martin Buber, Emmanuel Lévinas and Boaventura Santos. The fifth chapter is about the implementation of transdisciplinary epistemology Basarab Nicolescu and Edgar Morin in inter-religious dialogue, with the integration of knowledge of the logical axiom of the third included. In conclusion we highlight the key points within a new epistemological approach to peaceful coexistence of Christians and Muslims, in order to build a culture of peace

At the beginning of the new millennium a consensus is being formed among scholars from different parts of the world that classical theology no longer responds with satisfaction to the questions of this new Axial time. There is also an increasing desire to build a new theology that is inter-faith, multi-faith or simply trans-religious. This new theology requires the construction of a new paradigm in the theological thinking. Reflecting the efforts of similar initiatives around the world, the Ecumenical Association of Third World Theologians, EATWOT, through the collection "along the
many paths of God, proposed a new theology, that is trans-religious, secular, open, non-institutional, global, planetary, multi-religious, pluralist and in connection with the principles of liberation theology. This research ventures to study the possibilities and limits of this proposal of EATWOT.

do nosso objeto.
This dissertation analyzes the religiosity in method APAC and allocates as one of the
mechanismis utilized in the recovery of prisoners. For this, we investigated, initially,
as the Cursillo of Christianity, in their field that opposes to Liberation Theology, origin
of the early of APAC, influence in religious perspective proclaimed to institution until
the present day. After, we show a concise history of the discourse of APAC,
emphasizing the sistematization of the method in more recent writings of its founder,
Mário Ottoboni. Delimited this bias discursive (first part), we discuss the results of our
field research on two basics axles, which allowed us a better understanding of our
object. This refers, in the plan, of the notion of moralizing conversion – the prisioner’s
personal conversion gives rise to their behavior changes – as well as the verification
of how the frame of outcrop of the religiosity dinamizes the religious pluralism in
APAC.

Sweden has an integrative approach to religious education and the classroom is a platform for religious plurality. At the same time, school is one of the sources for youth to get their information about religions. The aim of this thesis was to describe how teachers of religious education in Sweden perceive their own teaching in relation to a religiously diverse context. The research questions were as follows: How do upper secondary school teachers of religious education describe their teaching, as taken place in a religiously diverse classroom, as well as a religiously diverse society? and How can we understand the image of religious diversity which is being conveyed by the teachers', in relation to James A. Beckford's clarification of the concept religious pluralism. By using an inductive qualitative content analysis, four semi-structured interviews with upper secondary school teachers of religious education were analysed. Through the results three themes emerged, which were: motivations, selection strategies and teaching strategies. To understand how these were related to religious diversity in society as well as in the classroom the results were analysed from a didactics perspective. To understand the image of religious pluralism that was constructed in the teacher’s descriptions James A. Beckford’s concept of religious pluralism was applied To conclude, the results answer to the questions of didactics. The religious diversity within the classroom emphasizes the question of how the teaching is conducted, while the religious diversity in society emphasizes the question of what is being taught. The question of “why” relates to both the diversity in the classroom as well as society. The description mirrors different forms of religious diversity. The teachers’ aim is to generate recognition and acceptance towards religious diversity which is in line with the curriculum. The teachers’ description of the content constructs an image of the level of religious diversity which relates to what is current in society. The religious diversity in the classroom is also described to have a certain positive value for the teachers as it allows different teaching strategies to be used.
