Presenting ASU's Ethos: Old Main as a Seat of ArgumentJanuary 2014 (has links)
abstract: Scholarship on the rhetoric of place and space provides ample precedent for the study of structures as rhetorical texts; real and imagined places which convey meaning or memory, particularly monuments, memorials, and museums have been extensively studied, but loci of identity and history in institutions of higher education are under- examined. The following analysis of Arizona State University's Old Main building seeks to fill a gap in the study of place and space. As an entity which produces its own powerful discourses, Arizona State University expresses its historicity and institutional goals through varied and numerous media, but Old Main is one of the most critical, for the structure acts as an ethical proof in ASU's argument for its character, endurance, and worth. This examination addresses how ASU's ethos is articulated through the experiences of Old Main's past and current users, the instructional historical texts and artifacts displayed in the structure, the way that the building is mediated by ASU discourses, and the agency of the edifice itself. This work endeavors to answer Henri Lefebvre's call to improve widespread understanding of spaces as texts and their dialogue with users, and builds on the work of Carol Blair, Richard P. Dober, Diane Favro, and Bruno Latour, as well as that of Henri Lefebvre. To provide full context, this analysis integrates scholarship from the disciplines of campus planning, architecture, classical rhetoric, and the rhetoric of place and space. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.A. English 2014

A gestão local na reabilitação urbana de áreas centrais: os casos de Lisboa e São Paulo / Local management in the rehabilitation of urban central areas: the cases of Lisboa and São PauloPaula Wernecke Padovani 25 November 2005 (has links)
This study consists of a presentation and analysis of the experiences undertaken in São Paulo and Lisboa, concerning inner city urban rehabilitation, of physically degraded areas inhabited by low income households. It aims at pointing out from an institutional and operational perspective, the weaknesses and strengths, opportunities and constraints within the management of the rehabilitation processes, for their implementation by the municipal governments. Despite the particularities of each reality, it highlights similarities regarding the role performed by the housing universe as propulsive factor triggering the rehabilitation processes, their premises, and the conception of local field offices (GTL in Lisbon and EA in Sao Paulo), operating as a branch of the municipal governments for the coordination of the urban rehabilitation process. It outlines, as well, the importance of political and societal supports, and the adoption of an alternative institutional arrangement in the municipality, expressed in the creation of these local field offices, in order to promote a participatory and integrated approach in the urban rehabilitation planning and management. For this purpose, it seeks for elements in the Portuguese experience that could contribute to the reflection of the recent and insipient Brazilian experience.

La rénovation urbaine de Pointe-à-Pitre du départ de Félix Eboué (1938) à la fermeture de l'usine Darboussier (1981) / Urban renewal of Pointe-à-Pitre departure of Félix Eboue (1936) the closure of the factory Darboussier(1981)Terral, Roméo 25 June 2013 (has links)
Urban renewal of Pointe-à-Pitre (1961-1981) was one of the 1argcstever conducted in France during the years (1961- . 1981) and the fust programmed overseas territories. 1'0 respond to the housing crisis and renovate parts of unhealthy ceUsthat had spread in an uncontroUed manner on wetlands located around the city it was intended to. Regional Expression In The Renovation Of Remote Historic Villageschen, Jie 11 July 2017 (has links)
Due to the fast-pace of urban development, there is a large demand for labor in big cities in China. Also, because of a huge income gap between countryside and cities, an increasing number of youths in rural areas have chosen to leave their homes and transfer to the cities causing a rapid decline of population and the vacancy of properties. This phenomenon is referred to as “Hollow Village”. Especially in case of some remote historic villages, due to labor turnover, villages which has precious historic and culture value are abandoned and stopped from development. Only children and elders are left in those villages without prospects.
Ling is among those backward areas. It has held a vital place in Huizhou culture during the history of Chinese rural settlements and contains a few ancient villages which share some common but features while being distinctive. However, with the lag of population and development, it is gradually losing its style and forgotten by moderns. This district needs to be preserved and developed while its feature is protected.
This thesis will analyze Ling’s current living conditions, tracing to its cultural and social changes through history and seeking to find architectural solutions, also by offering strategies that can lead to the revitalization of the place, while simultaneously creating some economic stimulations. The thesis aims to developing people’s sense of belonging and identity towards such villages, in the hope of revving as a prototype for other remote villages in China.

Museum Design As A Tool For A CityJiang, Cunbei 29 October 2019 (has links)
With the financial growth and international acclaim brought about by Guggenheim Museum for Bilbao, the media started to talk about the so-called “Bilbao Effect”. For the next two decades, the general public has been more and more convinced and accustomed to the positive results landmark architecture might brought for their cities. Thus it is worthwhile to explore the root of the Bilbao Effect and to dig into the effects of Guggenheim Museum so that similar industrial cities may select and apply strategies basing on their own conditions.

The Remains of a PlaceFaulring, Lynn Marie 10 November 1999 (has links)
What makes a city exist? Is it movement, rhythm, symbols, texture, volume and time? Architecture should heighten the drama of living, walking gives a true scale of the city, creating an experience. Urban spaces must accommodate the individual. Movement systems determine the shape of the fields of influence; this varies in intensity with the degree of movement.
This thesis is an exploration into architecture of meaning, space and elements. These common elements change context and increase scale while recognizing the difference between inside and outside. This contrast supports meaning. The play of scale, hierarchy and patterns use space in different ways accommodating the individual. An existing condition is transformed and renovated. What entities are removed and what entities will remain?
This art museum is permanent and changing over time, architecture that transforms. A strong symbolic form, the cube, establishes an entity within the urban fabric. A sequence of sensations in size, scale, color, texture and light motivate the space. Tension is created between two bodies, the exterior brick shell and interior steel framework. Natural light penetrates a double height space of new elegantly structured steel with reinforced concrete stepping platforms. The existing wood columns overlap into this steel structure creating a place for movement.
Juxtaposition is created between new construction and the existing. Light steel opposes heavy wood while transparency opposes opacity. Steel frames with concrete slabs independent of the existing shell and cantilevering precast concrete boxes oppose wood timbers and brick bearing walls. Concrete floors and gaps created where they meet walls oppose wood floors touching the walls. This completes this thesis. / Master of Architecture

Use it, break it, fix it and repeat : Designa cirkulärt och renoveringsbart / Use it, break it, fix it and repeat : Circular and refurbishable designTyrbo Flodström, Tobias January 2020 (has links)
This work is a study in how the design process is affected by the goal of creating refurbishable and circular design. The work has resulted in three pieces of furniture made with the possibility of renovation. This was done with the help of guidelines that could be put into place after accumulated knowledge of circular design, interviews with three companies in the Swedish furniture industry and craftsmen in carpentry, wallpaper and furniture preservation. We as designers have a responsibility for what comes out in the world and how it affects the environment, people and the future we will live in. We train ourselves to educate others with our design.
