Residential mobility in Montreal, 1861-1901

Gilliland, Jason A. January 1993 (has links)
Residential change is a pervasive condition of North American society. In a lifetime, a person may go through many decisive and interrelated changes in occupational status, family situation and dwelling-place. This research tests the relationships among three major processes: residential mobility, social mobility, and family formation in Montreal between 1861 and 1901. Using sample households from three cultural communities: French Canadian, Irish Catholic, and British Protestants, it was determined that the majority of households were highly mobile, yet remained within a compact geographical area. Mobility is seen as a response to a changing set of needs and opportunities, and families facilitated adjustment through extensive networks of kinship and neighbouring. / Studies of present-day household mobility provide a well-developed set of theories, on which several hypotheses were based. Multivariate regression analysis was performed using the binomial logit model to assess the relative effects of ethnicity, tenure, occupational status, age, household size, marital status and rent, on rates of household persistence.

"Looking a gift horse in the mouth": Residential Immobility and the Silent Discipline of Public Housing as Charity in British Columbia

Davies, Matthew Eric 03 January 2014 (has links)
In the Spring of 2011, I conducted 12 interviews with public housing tenants in Victoria, British Columbia. This research became the focus of my MA thesis research in anthropology. Both BC Housing's directly managed buildings and non-profit housing were included. My thesis aims to understand the motivations of tenants who desire to leave public housing and to situate these motivations within the framework of "push" and "pull" factors. In other words, to understand whether the desire to leave public housing stemmed from within in the housing system (push) or outside of it (pull). All participants reported push factors, though a few had been pushed from unsatisfactory public housing into satisfactory public housing. However, most participants felt stuck as they did not have the resources to pay for unaffordable market housing. The dissatisfaction they faced in public housing stemmed from problems with management/staff, problems with neighbours, and problems with the physical condition of housing. Many participants expressed fear that they would lose their housing if they expressed their rights as tenants or made complaints about the issues they faced. Complaints that were brought forward were seen as being ignored. In order to understand the frustration and fear participants experienced, I explore the idea of social assistance as "charity", which has its beginnings in the English Poor Laws, and what effect this has on the recipients. Social assistance as charity, including public housing, is given as a sort of "gift". I argue that in this framework, a gift should be accepted willingly and not questioned. This acts to silence complaints and plays off of common notions about who are the deserving poor and undeserving poor. / Graduate / 0326 / medavies@uvic.ca

No. of bitstreams: 1 GeraldoBCJ.pdf: 365374 bytes, checksum: 2af292c8b09cb23c79d2a39a98240006 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2006-06-02 / The research in question looked for to establish the relation between the motivation (of the proprietor of apartment) to change itself of another one apartment, in closed vertical condominium (residential mobility) in the period of the recognition of the necessity, and the satisfaction with the apartment after consume. The universe or the population chosen for the development of the study was of proprietors of apartment in vertical condominiums located in the region metropolitan of Natal. The analysis of data was made using the techniques of linear regression and logistic regression between variables. The linear regression found relations between the motivations for housing change and the satisfaction in after consume with some attributes of the apartment. The logistic regression showed that relations between the motivations for change and the general satisfaction to the apartment exist as a whole, in the period after consumes. With regard to the motivation to change itself of a apartment for another one, some reasons shown more motivation them the others. The research found different degrees of satisfaction with certain characteristics of the apartment and degrees of no satisfaction with others. Finally the results of the research had contributed for the reply of the problem that guided the present study, therefore had obtained in such a way to find how much logistic not linear relations between the two periods purchase (recognition of the necessity and evaluation after consume) and had elucidated the process that goes since the choice the product until the satisfaction of the necessities / Este trabalho procurou estabelecer a rela??o entre a motiva??o (do propriet?rio de im?veis) para se mudar de um im?vel para um outro, em condom?nio vertical fechado (mobilidade residencial) no est?gio de reconhecimento da necessidade, e a satisfa??o com o im?vel no est?gio da avalia??o de p?s-consumo.

Hierarchy of the attributes of location and dwelling characteristics considered in the processes of residential choices of residents of the city of São Paulo.

Rogerio Calil Haddad Atala 15 June 2018 (has links)
This paper will discuss the behavioral analysis of the families regarding their desires related to the attributes of location and characteristics of housing in the city of São Paulo when submitted to multiple choice processes for future residence, resulting in the hierarchy of the attributes chosen in degree of importance. In order to analyze the families\' wishes, questionnaires were sent by e-mail to clients who purchased apartments from a developer in the city of São Paulo or who visited their sales stands, totaling 103 respondents. The database provided by the developer was composed of name, home address, e-mail address, age, family income. These questionnaires were based on the articles by MONTGOMERY and CURTIS (2006) and WIDMANN AND KELLY (2011) and were distributed to the public through the Survey Monkey platform. The questions were based on variables of location attributes and housing characteristics, according to BURGESS AND SKELTYS (1992). As for the public, the questions were in relation to the family structure, the location of his current residence, age and income range. The results are presented through graphs showing the preferences of each identified audience, stratifying it according to their family structures and ages, age group and finally family income in relation to the attributes listed in the questionnaire elaboration phase. It is hoped that this dissertation will understand the aspirations of the families living in the city of São Paulo, as well as their priorities regarding the choice of characteristics of housing and location. As the final product of the work, provide data, information and recommendations that can be used in future research, meeting the needs of developers of real estate products, marketing professionals and real estate professionals.

Rezidenční mobilita a naplňování idejí cohousingu v každodenním životě obyvatel: případová studie projektu Klidná / Residential mobility and fulfilling the ideas of cohousing in the everyday life of inhabitants: Case study of the Klidná project

Horňáková, Marie January 2017 (has links)
The thesis deals with cohousing; a concept of living based on common spaces and shared facilities. In the first phase, the aim is to provide a summary of the development of cohousing and other similar forms of housing in the world and also in Czechia. The second phase focuses on a concrete by cohousing inspired residential project located in the inner city of Prague. In the work it appears under the name Klidná. The second phase aims to find out what led the communication partners to choose Klidná as a new place of residence, how important role did the specific aspects based on cohousing played in the decision-making process and finally how are the ideas of this concept being fulfilled in everyday life of the inhabitants. The research is of a qualitative nature and the main method of data collection is realization of deep semi-structured interviews, which are subsequently evaluated on the basis of theoretical thematic analysis. Based on the study, none of the communication partners chose Klidná because of the concept of cohousing. They perceived the existence of common areas, small scale of the project or its spatial layout rather as a pleasant bonus. Fulfilling ideas of the concept in everyday life of the informants corresponds with the nature of the project and the context in which it was...

As evidências empíricas e as análises teóricas permitiram, ainda, avançar no conhecimento das transformações advindas da recente reestruturação do pólo moveleiro de Votuporanga, na sua articulação com a dinâmica urbana e os deslocamentos populacionais que têm engendrado inflexões na estrutura urbana do município / Abstract: This dissertation discusses the interrelationships established between demographic displacements and urban structuring in the process of the historical constitution of the municipality of Votuporanga, in the State of São Paulo, Brazil. This case study is thus analyzed with the aim of clarifying the socio-demographic processes involved and their articulation with the historically constituted economic dynamics. With this, lato sensu, bases of the social, economic and urban formation of the small and medium-sized municipalities to the west of the urban sprawl of São Paulo are brought to light. Empirical evidence and theoretical analyses also made it possible to advance in knowledge regarding the transformations that took place in the recent restructuring of the furniture manufacturing industry in the town of Votuporanga, in its articulation with the urban dynamics and the demographic displacements that have brought about changes in the urban structure of that municipality / Mestrado / Demografia

The origins of the human remains from Perrins Ledge crematorium: strontium isotope ratio assessment of archaeological cremains

Graham, Deborah Denee 03 November 2015 (has links)
Strontium isotope (87Sr/86Sr) analyses have been used effectively to reconstruct the origin of osteological remains that have not been exposed to increasing temperatures (Bentley, 2006; Juarez, 2008; Knudson et al., 2005). However, previous research has shown that no thermally induced changes occur to original strontium isotope values (87Sr/86Sr) of bone and teeth specimens that have been subjected to temperatures between 212 and 1832 degrees Fahrenheit (Beard and Johnson, 2000; Grupe and Hummel, 1991; Harbeck et al., 2011), though the published literature regarding strontium isotope ratio stability and survivorship in thermally altered bone and teeth is limited. This is surprising given the potential implications for geolocation inquiries of cremains (or severely burnt remains) in both forensic and archaeological contexts. This research will focus on the latter context by using strontium isotope analyses, via thermal ionization mass spectrometry, to reconstruct the origins of human remains from a unique late Woodland period (A.D. 600-850) archaeological burial site known as the Perrins Ledge crematory, located in the lower Illinois River valley. Strontium isotope signatures derived from the Perrins Ledge cremains will be compared with values obtained from osteological faunal remains from three contemporary neighboring sites (Carlin, Apple Creek, and Newbridge). It is expected that the Perrins Ledge values will mirror those derived from the neighboring contemporary habitation sites suggesting local groups used the crematorium.
