Mood Marking in Unangam Tunuu

Newhall, Christina Laree, Newhall, Christina Laree January 2016 (has links)
Unangam Tunuu has been recorded since the early days of contact in the mid 1700s; it is the sole representative of the 'Aleut' branch in the Eskimo-Aleut language family, and though it shares certain features with Yupik, Inuktitut and other Eskimo languages, it is distinct and employs a host of unique strategies to convey meaning. In this paper I will give an overview of the language, Unangam Tunuu, and background of the Indigenous people who speak it. I will also give a brief overview of the grammatical category of mood, discuss how mood is traditionally understood to function in European languages, and how it is represented in Unangam Tunuu. I will argue that the category of mood in Unangam Tunuu and the markers which have been glossed as such show many irregularities from what has been traditionally considered mood, and argue that this category needs to be critically re-examined. I will also suggest elicitation plans to assist in testing for mood-marking, specifically the indicative, as well as subjunctive-like or irrealis inflections.

Reconnecting East Liberty: A Case Study of Public Investment in Public Infrastructure

Ciccone, Matthew 01 October 2006 (has links)
Researched during the summer of 2006 in a collaborative effort between Carnegie Mellon University's Urban Lab and East Liberty Development, Inc. this thesis seeks to develop a model for evaluating the impact of progressive urban design strategies in an existing community by measuring the costs and potential returns of public investment in progressive urban infrastructure. Using the case study of East Liberty as a laboratory, this study identifies clear baseline assumptions for the costs of urban infrastructure, as well as estimated public returns based on private investment leveraged and new residential and commercial tax revenue streams. Aimed at providing urban designers a facilitation tool in arguing for public investment in progressive urban infrastructure that reconnects fragmented com m unities, this study suggests that clear financial and com m unity returns are "hidden" in urban infrastructure investment.

Revitalisation des centres historiques en Iran : le cas du quartier d'Oudlajan à Téhéran / Revitalization of historic centers in Iran : the case of Oudlajan neighbourhood in Tehran

Rezaei, Naimeh 19 May 2014 (has links)
Despite its historical riches the old center of Tehran is now in a worrying state and the issue of preservation of its heritage has become the major challenge for conservatives and heritage advocates. Plans and propositions made to revitalize the historic center were largely useless. This thesis focuses on the reasons for the difficult revitalization of the historical center of Tehran. The study of Oudlajan, one of the historic neighbourhoods of Tehran, allows to understand the current state of urban heritage. According to our analysis, apart from the government policies in the different periods, the representation of heritage in Iranian society is strongly influenced by the thoughts and ideological trends. The desire to “change”, which has long existed in Iran, was accompanied by the rejection of tradition and history, destroying everything that is known as old. Due to authoritarian modernization, the city became a symbol of the break with history, tradition and local identity, imitating Western models. The study of the strategies employed by different actors highlights two different positions facing heritage of Oudlajan neighborhood. The position of the guardians, who see only the conservation of monuments. The action of these preservatives is limited to inventory, regulation and control. The position of the partisans of urban development can be divided into three groups: institutional actors seeking to renew older neighborhoods to increase their earthquake resistance; the actors who want new constructions for their economic interests; and, finally, the residents who wish to live in a new house and a modern neighbourhood. Approaches of these three groups show a lack of interest in heritage and historic spaces and a desire for modernization.

[en] REVITALIZATION OF DERELICT URBAN SPACES AS A STRATEGY FOR ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY: THE HIGH LINE PARK CASE IN THE CONTEXT OF PLANYC / [pt] REVITALIZAÇÃO DE ESPAÇOS URBANOS OCIOSOS COMO ESTRATÉGIA PARA A SUSTENTABILIDADE AMBIENTAL: O CASO DO HIGH LINE PARK NO CONTEXTO DO PLANYC

RENATA MACIEL JARDIM 08 April 2013 (has links)
[en] This study aims to analyze the urban conversion project of abandoned space into a park while taking into consideration the levels of commitment to sustainability. The process of revitalization of the High Line elevated rail line located in Manhattan, in New York City, erected in 1930 as part of the industrial structure of the region and later abandoned for decades, led to the creation of High Line Park, a public space which was successful in leveraging the requalification of the immediate surroundings in the neighborhoods that it goes through - Chelsea and Meatpacking District. Urban ruins, part of the industrial legacy left by the process of deindustrialization, the High Line was able to avoid demolition largely as a result of a community led conversion campaign. Created in an era of pertinent concern with global climate change and the degree of sustainability of cities, the park design expresses the search for the adoption of solutions that address these scenarios. Moreover, the implementation of High Line Park inserts in the context of the progress of New York itself, the most densely populated city in the United States, in managing the development of its physical aspects toward a greener and better city – motto of PlaNYC, a plan elaborated by the city that sets targets for this to effectively occur. It is therefore an investigation – following a case study centered on the examination of the design and operation of the park – which aims to contribute to a possible analysis of the degree of sustainability of similar future projects.

The Aragonese resistance : A qualitative study on the attitudes and motivations of new speakers of an endangered language in Zaragoza

Fau Blimming, Erik January 2019 (has links)
While the number of Aragonese speakers is in steady decline in the rural areas of Spain where it was traditionally spoken, the efforts of grassroots movements since the end of Franco’s dictatorship in 1975 have contributed to create a community of new speakers in Aragon’s largest cities, mostly thanks to courses for adults organized by cultural associations. The capital, Zaragoza, which has been practically monolingual for centuries, after Spanish became the language of power and prestige in the 15th century, is now home to several thousand Aragonese speakers. Despite their growing importance, very little research has been done on the views and experiences of these individuals. Drawing on data from focus groups and interviews, the aim of this thesis is to analyze their language ideologies, motivations, frustrations, political engagements, language use and challenges. Hopefully, this information will be valuable in the design of an effective language policy in the future.

Protocolo de atuação para as instituições na minimização dos danos ambientais ocasionados pelos acidentes envolvendo Brownfields / Protocol of action for institutions in minimizing the environmental damages caused by accidents involving Brownfields

Vasconcellos, Agnaldo Ribeiro de 18 September 2018 (has links)
The possibility of revitalizing and reusing areas contaminated by hazardous substances has emerged as a great alternative in urban centers. The decontamination of these sites, among which some known as Brownfields, and its rehabilitation for reuse, besides presenting itself as an option to the creation of space in the great centers, stands out as a solution in the protection of public safety, the health of the population and the environment by the risks offered by the substances present therein. However, in the time elapsed between the identification of contaminated area and its revitalization, there is a probability of accidents caused by the leakage of hazardous waste deposited therein, causing harmful effects to the population and the environment, which implies immediate action by the public power. Based on a case study involving deactivated industry used as an area for clandestine storage of drums containing hazardous waste, the work proposes the creation of an action protocol aiming to guide the intervening actors in the accidental scenarios involving Brownfields. The objective is to offer a tool to help reduce the environmental damage caused by this type of occurrence, in addition to contributing to the discussion of public policies that allow programming the strategic management of Brownfields, changing the way of identifying, treating and managing contaminated areas.
