Timmers, Juliano da Costa Machado January 2011 (has links)
The following study analyses a proposal of spatial changing over a section of a larger public area of the Guaiba lake's margin in Porto Alegre. This changing is comprehended over urbanization processes widespread in global scale as the manifestations of the strategic planning. The proposal included into the present study aims to identify revitalization of the mentioned area of Porto Alegre, with the traces of urbanization adapted to the forms of capitalist market of XXI century that have developed themselves under a political perspective through an arrangement of urban monopolistic agents. The analysis presented in this study follows the interpretation of Jean Lojkine to whom the monopolistic organization of production envolves the urban spaces with a significant importance into the processes of reproduction of capital. The agents that promote this sort of modification of the cities through this logic of monopolistic capital accumulation are represented by segments of State and great capital. The study indicates that the revitalization in course over the Porto Alegre’s margin results in an updating of this space to the reproduction of capital, more than a demand from the population located into this area.

Revitalização portuária : caso Puerto Madero

Giacomet, Luciane January 2008 (has links)
The investigation presents a case study on the urban revitalization of the deactivated Puerto Madero, in Buenos Aires. Recycling deteriorated old portuary places is one of the principals contemporary urbanism themes. As a contemporary issue, the study of Puerto Madero´s project and revitalization represents a referential experience to other cities at similar situation – such as Porto Alegre, where this work was developed-, once it creates an exemplar precedent context, during a relatively short period. Although the first part of the investigation was oriented to the Buenos Aires port’s historical knowledge and its urban evolution until the present days, the investigation’s focus is centered in the analysis of the executed project , not only by the urban point of view, but also the architectural. The project’s studies is segmented in four parts, correspondent to the docks ports, which stand out the diversity of existing exemplars in the area. Finally, a determined number of representative typologies were chosen, being their projectual’s qualities evaluated. The elaboration of a vast panorama of Puerto Madero´s operation allows the understanding of it metropolitan, historical, urban and architectural context.

Corrêa, Bernardo Alves January 2014 (has links)
This project, developed in the field of Sociology of Work, aims to cooperate with the discussion about the current and future unionism, connected to the Labour Revitalization Studies. Syndicalism in public sector, especially in the end of 1980‘s, was developed with the assumption of the union character of the civil servants trade unions, also with the influence of the new unionism over middle classes and the policy environment of the struggles for democratization in Brazil after dictatorship. That‘s how it was formed SIMPA, a union trade of civil servants of Porto Alegre City, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. SIMPA was the first union trade of municipal workers legalized in the country, and it is the empirical object of this research. Themes such as reforms and the persistence of the union structure, in a context of outsourcing in public administration, as well as the assumption for a large part of literature that union movement was passing through a crisis, are some elements that instigate the investigation of union actions face to the discussion of a supposed crisis or decline. With an Extended Case Method, we analyze the emergence of new unionism practices. Rescuing the experiences of SIMPA, we search for connections to with some authors have called ―Social Movement Unionism‖, about the relations between classical unionism and new demonstrations and movements that have been arising in our times.

“WE ARE ALL LEARNERS” DISCOURSES OF OWNERSHIP AND STRATEGIES OF REINFORCEMENT IN THE TUNICA LANGUAGE REAWAKENING

Whitaker, Tyler A. 01 August 2017 (has links)
Most of the innovations of the Tunica language happen in a top-down manner, with a core group of people mostly from outside of the tribe hashing out neologisms, internally consistent rules, and accessible educational materials. While many of the tribal children, especially teenagers, experience interest in learning and participating in cultural traditions such as crafts, storytelling, and powwow, most of the shaping and development of the language has up to this point happened out of their sight. This is beginning to change with multiple strategies to include students more directly in the creation of neologisms, encouragement to take ownership of their language and culture, and attempts to reframe all participants young and old as simultaneously “speakers” and “learners.” Ideologies of identity, language, education, and academic expertise all combine to create this unique Tunica reawakening experience.

Speech community-based documentation, description, and revitalization: Kari'nja in Konomerume / Kari'nja in Konomerume

Yamada, Racquel-Maria, 1967- 09 1900 (has links)
xxii, 995 p. A print copy of this thesis (with two accompanying DVD videos) is available through the UO Libraries. Search the library catalog for the location and call number. / Since 2005, I have been working with members of the Kari'nja community of Konomerume, Suriname to document, describe, preserve, and revitalize their heritage language, the Aretyry dialect of Kari'nja (Cariban family). Simultaneously, I have worked to develop, pilot, and articulate a model of field research that depends on participation from speech community members. This dissertation combines exposition of this model of field research with presentation of a large body of the results from the application of that new model. Ethnically Kari'nja, Konomerume community members have witnessed a decline in language use in recent generations. Although I work primarily with members of the Konomerume community, a village on the banks of the Wajambo River in Suriname, in recent years, I have expanded my work to include two other communities in the region, Corneliskondre and Kalebas Kreek. My work with Kari'nja community members concerns four broad, interrelated areas of endangered languages research, each described in a section of the dissertation. Following Chapter 1, which provides an orientation to the dissertation as a whole, Chapter 2 reviews strengths and problems with prior models of fieldwork, then proposes a new model of fieldwork with members of Indigenous communities. Chapter 3 demonstrates some of the linguistic results of our work together in Konomerume, offering a more pedagogical overview of some aspects of Kari'nja grammar followed by more academic descriptions of nonverbal predication and an innovative main clause progressive construction. Chapter 4 addresses how documentation can be combined with applied linguistics to support revitalization through formal language teaching. Finally, Chapter 5 describes the documentary corpus that is found in the appendices, explaining procedural steps used in creating the corpus and outlining the actual documentary products that we have produced. The Appendices are the concrete representation of the body of collaborative work that the Kari'nja community and I have done together. They include DVD videos, a substantial collection of transcribed, translated, and grammatically annotated texts in multiple genres, a dictionary, a pedagogical grammar sketch, and a curriculum guide for formal teaching of introductory Kari'nja. / Committee in charge: Spike Gildea, Chairperson, Linguistics; Eric Pederson, Member, Linguistics; Susan Guion, Member, Linguistics; Janne Underriner, Member, Linguistics; Brian Klopotek, Outside Member, Anthropology

Sales, John Max Santos January 2013 (has links)
The paper discusses the performance of the real estate market in urban centers. It departs from the premise that the central areas of cities are currently undergoing processes of depopulation, flight of higher income social classes, and the departure of high-end commerce and that this has been concomitant with the appearance of features of degradation and deterioration. More recently, central areas have been the focus of urban revitalization policies that seek to revert decay and stagnation. This researchexplores how these processes are impacting the real estate market in the central areas as compared to other districts. The objective is to evaluate the performance of the real estate market in the historic center of Porto Alegre by identifying its evolution and recent dynamics. First, the research characterizes the center in terms of its socioeconomic and demographic features, and also presents the principle revitalization actions and policies in the area. Next, it analyzes the market for new and used properties for sale and lease based on the number of offers and prices during the period between 2007 and 2011. The results show that the center of Porto Alegre still maintains indicators of quality infrastructure and accessibility. The real estate market of new buildings in downtown Porto Alegre, although not representative of the city, has undergone changes in the type and value of the property released pointing toward an increase in real estate value. The real estate market for used buildings was extremely relevant in quantitative terms in the city, being focused mainly on income profiles of middle to lower-middle income occupants. The processes of revitalization and public and private investments made in the center have a had a role in creating a context of appreciation of the center as a workplace and a place of residence for certain population profiles.
