What Are the Limitations to Teaching Navajo Language in the Head Start Immersion Program?January 2015 (has links)
abstract: This study investigated the limitations of Navajo language teaching in Navajo Head Start immersion centers. The research questions asked what did Head Start teachers perceive as barriers to Navajo children successfully learning the Navajo language, what skills and knowledge did Head Start teachers have that were relevant to teach Head Start children the Navajo language, what Head Start teachers perceived as their strengths and weaknesses of the language immersion program, and what program and instructional qualities promoted and restricted the success of the language program? Two males and six females who resided in the western part of the Navajo Nation wee interviewed as to their teaching experiences. All of the interviewees were between the ages of late 40's to mid-60's and all spoke Navajo fluently. They had been employed with Head Start for more than 10 years. They came from families who had strong beliefs in the Navajo culture and language, and believed all teachers should take Navajo language and culture classes to teach in Head Start. The interviews revealed the participants use their traditional language and culture skills to teach Navajo, but they had limited knowledge as how to use the curriculum provided by Division of Dine Education. The English curriculum was accessible and easy to follow, but did not adhered to President Hale's Executive Order to perpetuate the language. It was recommended that Head Start administrators and support staff review the Navajo language policies and regulations, train teachers how to write a lesson plan that was simple and teacher friendly, revamp the curriculums, and train teachers how to critique, analyze and develop lessons from the Navajo Curriculum. In addition, administrators, should monitor and provide technical assistance to ensure teachers are implementing Navajo language instruction according to Navajo Standards and monitoring each child's progress according to developmental domains and assessment. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Educational Administration and Supervision 2015

Previous issue date: 2011-08-02 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This research has as objective to understand the urban dynamics in the central area of Florianópolis, through the use of this space for the tourism. The choice of the area was due to be relegated to as a plain one inside of the investment in tourism, once the main tourist segment is related Florianópolis, beaches, located in distant from the downtown area. To understand this urban-touristic process, initially it searched to delimit the central area and know the historical formation and the main inheritances, making the characterization and debating the space concepts. It has been discussed the interventions occurred and collated the
clear of tourism as a phenomenon of space transformer. And, it was either analyzed some urban projects and tours that allowed to evaluate the dynamics and growth trends in the study area. The method adopted was exploratory qualitative analysis with the aid of structured interviews. Thus, it was verified how the tourism appropriates itself the urban space through different points of view: of the inhabitant, tourist and visitor, who are the main actors in this process of use of the central area. It is understood therefore that the appropriation of public space by private interests in pursuit of modernization and upgrading of posts in the central area aims to meet a specific audience rather than the majority population / Esta pesquisa tem como objetivo compreender a dinâmica urbana na área central de Florianópolis, por meio do uso deste espaço pelo turismo.

Corredores fluviais urbanos : percepção ambiental e desenho urbanoBochi, Thaís Caetano January 2013 (has links)
River environmental degradation related to water quality and urban area due to the uncontrolled city’s development is discussed in this work. In Brazil, most urban rivers and streams are piped due to the usage as a part of the sewage system. This scenario worsen when there is irregular occupations around water supply sources. Moreover, the absence of water and sewer drainage and services increases inundation numbers harming cities environmentally and socially. However, river revitalization is an action performed with the purpose to repair negative impacts of undue usage of river corridors. Thus, this study aimed to contribute in the knowledge of subjects related to public management, infrastructure, structure, usage, and aesthetics in stream revitalization of irregular occupation areas. It was chosen the Riacho Doce micro watershed as the studied area, part of Arroio Dilúvio watershed, at Porto Alegre. The methodology used in this work is based on the Environment-Behavior area of study, and it aimed to evaluate attitudes and behaviors of inhabitants from this micro watershed over physical-spatial characteristics. It was used models and draws simulations to facilitate the understanding for the enquired population around the proposed evaluations in this work. Results revealed that inhabitants desires the revitalization of river corridors even that streams from Vila Pinto has a severe environmental degradation linked to a negative appearance. Analysis of inhabitant’s environmental perception showed that stream remediation and infrastructure provision are recommended as well as other important actions. Thus, the supply of leisure spaces around the waterfront, construction of trails for pedestrians and bicycle riders apart from roads, build a contact zones with water in green area, construction of shadow areas with different degrees of sun incidence are some actions strongly recommended to promote seasonal usage and river landscape aesthetic in the studied region.

Sítios saturados : intervenções em vazios urbanosMartins, Elisa Toschi January 2016 (has links)
This study comprises the theme of intervention through projects developed based on preexistences and associated with the appropriation of abandoned spaces: urban voids. It deals with issues related to urban landscape and to the incorporation of iconic buildings as strategies of requalification and potentiality of existing contexts, adding new programs and complexities. To the theoretical fragments regarding the theme, it is added the challenge of studying contemporary city dynamics and the confrontations and overlappings between modern and traditional city concepts. Among the pertinent works to this study, three projects from the São Paulo-based office, Brasil Arquitetura, and three projects from the Swiss-based office, Herzog & de Meuron, were selected to compose the national and international contexts, respectively. The case studies are contextualized by a panorama of works in order to highlight the importance and relevance of the subject. It is proposed an approach between the projects selected taking into account their interaction with the historical identity and the urban memory, evidencing the concept of place. This study suggests the acknowledgment of architecture as a tool of intervention on the existing context without, however, analyzing interventionist criteria and procedures. Therefore, it investigates the relationship between theory and design practice considering the recent architectural production and new concepts proposed by superposition of layers of built.

Practicing Community-based Truku (Indigenous) Language Policy: Dialogues of Hope at the Intersection of Language Revitalization, Identity Development, and Community RebuildingJanuary 2014 (has links)
abstract: The dissertation focuses on one Truku (Indigenous) village in eastern Taiwan and aims to understand the processes and possibilities of bottom-up language revitalization. In 2012, the National Geographic Genographic Legacy Fund supported the village to start a community-driven language revitalization initiative. Drawing on scholarship guided by critical Indigenous research methodologies, critical sociocultural approaches to language policy and planning, and sociocultural approaches to learning, this study is an attempt to generate qualitative ethnographic research to facilitate local praxis. The major findings are four: Firstly, after decades of colonialism, villagers' lived experiences and language ideological standpoints vary significantly across generations and households, which constraints the possibility of collective endeavors. Secondly, building on previous scholars' emphasis on "ideological clarification" prior to language revitalization, I identify the dimension of embodied ideological differences, using cultural historical activity theory to illustrate how certain "mainstream" artifacts (e.g. orthography) can confine orally dominant elders' capacity to contribute. In a similar vein, by closely examining children's voices and language performances, I highlight children's theory of language as relationship-building and a theory of learning as participation in communities of participation, which stand in stark contrast to adult educators' constructs of acquisition and proficiency in traditional SLA. Finally, inspired by children and elders' voices, methodologically I argue for a relational conceptualization of agency and propose a relationship-oriented language revitalization framework. Such framework values and incorporates existing social relationships in praxis, and requires researchers and practitioners to humbly recognize the work of power in social relations and develop a trusting, reflective bond with the villagers before rushing to impose agendas. This dissertation contributes to the scholarship of language policy and planning by incorporating sociocultural learning theories designed to generate praxis-oriented analysis. By contextualizing identity and SLA processes in an Indigenous context, the study also illuminates the affective dimension of language learning and education. Overall this study offers valuable insights for scholars, educators, and practitioners interested in community-based language education. Equally important, this research represents the voices of multiple generations of Truku people, deeply committed to ensuring that future generations remain connected to their heritage language, knowledge system, and ways of being. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. English 2014
