Second Language Acquisition of the Spanish Tap and Trill in a Contact Learning Environment

Weech, Andrew M. 19 November 2009 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of this thesis is to study whether target-like articulation of the Spanish tap [ɾ] and trill [r] is achieved by second language learners who have lived in a Spanish-speaking environment for an extensive period of time. The subjects of this study were students at Brigham Young University (BYU) who had spent 18 months to two years in a Spanish-speaking country. Most of the subjects had little to no previous Spanish instruction, but rather learned the language primarily through their contact with native speakers while abroad. In addition to whether or not subjects achieved target-like pronunciation of these two Spanish sounds, this study sought to observe whether or not certain linguistic factors (e.g., neighboring sounds, syllable stress, etc.) and extra-linguistic factors (e.g., previous Spanish instruction, instructors who were native speakers of Spanish, articulation in formal or informal speech, etc.) had influence on their articulation. The results of this study reveal that the subjects were generally successful in articulating the Spanish rhotic sounds. The majority of the subjects pronounced the rhotics in a target-like manner over 80% of the time. Furthermore, while previous studies have claimed that the transfer of the American English approximant [ɹ] is the most common error when acquiring the Spanish tap and trill, the current study suggests that the most common error of L2 speakers who have lived abroad is developmental: the production of the tap [ɾ] in place of the trill /r/. Lastly, it reveals, through the results of a variable rule analysis, that the two most significant factors in accurate tap and trill articulation are its phonetic context and whether or not the participants had received adequate Spanish instruction prior to having lived abroad.

No. of bitstreams: 1 arquivototal.pdf: 3955410 bytes, checksum: 6775dd72d11a9bce3ff72cda1cea878e (MD5) Previous issue date: 2009-01-23 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / This thesis will examine the phonetic-phonological behaviour of rhotic in position of coda in the speech of 36 subjects from the north of Piauí state and the capital- Teresina. For this study, the sociolinguistic approach was used, with the support of the Variation Theory. In the findings four variants were found, the glottal fricatives [h] with 48.1% and zero phonetic [ø] with 22.2%, those which obtained the highest percentage of occurrence with 48.1% of occurences. On the other hand, the tap [] showed 19.01% and the palatal fricative [] with 10.6% of realization. Taking into consideration the more recurring variants, the findings show that the search results revealed that these variations are due to both the linguistic and social limitations, but they are more sensitive to the phonetic-phonological context. For the linguistic analysis, the previous and the following phonological context restrictions were considered, the position in syllable, the tone, the length of word and the grammatical category, were also taken into account, while for the social aspects, education, gender and age were chosen by the program Goldvarb. The findings showed that the restriction of the grammatical category was the one which most favored the variants, and the glottal fricative variants presented more evident results. From the acoustic view, with the help of the Acoustic Theory of Speech Production, in view of Kent and Read (1992), and other theoretitions linked to the acoustics perspective, in order to undertake an acoustic analysis of the segments /h/, /h/ e /h/, with emphasis on the latter two, considered in this study variations of [h]. To make such an analysis the study was grounded on the support of the Praat program. The results which were obtained from both linguistic analysis as well as acoustics analysis lead to the discussions concerning the behavior of the rhotic in Piauiense speech, noting that the four variants are recurrent in this speech community. However, the greatest focus was on the palatal fricative variant [], a realization not yet found in the pertinent linguistic literature. This phonetic-phonological phenomenon always happens before a silent glottal fricative when followed by a palatal fricative, also silent, and can be interpreted in two ways: first described as [h], which proves that the silent alveolar occlusive [t] constitutes the first consonant of silent affricate alveopalatal that blends with the following consonant. In this manner there is a kind of ressilabification of the merging type while maintaining the standard syllabic pattern CVC. CV remains the most simplified type. In the second realization one observes that the silent alveolar occlusive stays the same along with the affricate in the following syllabic attack. In both events evidence a kind of regressive assimilation was observed especially in the last occurrence, in which the assimilator is found after the assimmilated element. In both phenomena a partial type of palatalization was observed. This type of palatalization is a linguistic peculiarity restricted to specific language spoken in Piaui.

As realizações de /R/ rm coda silábica na comunidade de Porto da Rua, litoral norte de Alagoas : análise lingüística e sociolinguística / The performances of /R/ in coda in the community of Porto da Rua, in the northern coast of Alagoas : linguistic analysis and sociolinguistics

Santos, Jeylla Salomé Barbosa dos 02 August 2010 (has links)
In the light of the Theory of Variation and Change and Generative Phonology, in this study, aims to investigate the performance of a segment /R/ in the community of Porto da Rua (in the northern coast of Alagoas). The phonetic environment in which this realization occurs was determined, as well as the influence of extralinguistic factors analysed. The corpus for this research consisted of 48 informants among men and women born in the community. The categorization of data and statistical analysis were done using the package VARBRUL. Data were coded according to linguistic and social groups of factors (GF). The results indicated that the variant under study may be undergoing a process of linguistic change, since those responsible for spreading the informants are not in school and age over 50 years. Data collection was done through recordings with spontaneous narratives. The objective is thus to study the correlation between linguistic phenomena and stratified external variables (gender, age and education).

No. of bitstreams: 1 PDF - Sandra Cabral Lopes.pdf: 19559264 bytes, checksum: b39099cbcf0067be5e37164c8c8e7872 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2015-08-27 / CAPES / In the process of teaching the Portuguese language as a mother tongue in Brazil, it is common to find, in different educational levels, the influence of speech in writing, whether on textual-discursive aspects, or on morphosyntactic and orthographic aspects. Thus, in this study we investigate the interference of speech in 7th and 8th grade students‟ writing, enrolled in a public school in Guarabira-PB, with a focus on the elision of the rhotic in syllable codas. The aim is to show the linguistic and social factors favorable to the realization/elision of the consonantal segment -R at the end of syllables. The corpus consists of 88 texts, 44 written before and 44 written after an educational intervention. As the factor groups which may interfere on the elision of –R, we consider educational level, sex, word class, position of –R in the word, length of the word and precedent context. As conditioners to rhotic elision, the results point out the variables school level (7th grade), word class (verb), position in the word (ending), length of the word (non-monosyllables), and precedent context (high and low vowels). It was still possible to see, from an educational intervention considering these results, that a systematic work paying attention to the phonological consciousness turns to be productive in the context where orthographic specificities of the Portuguese language are taught. The work is based on three main areas of theoretical studies: phonetics/phonology (BISOL, 2005; SILVA, 2014, 2011; HORA & PEDROSA, 2012; CÂMARA Jr., 2008), variational and applied sociolinguistics (BAGNO, 2007; LABOV, 1992; BORTONI-RICARDO, 2004, 2005) and notions related to the processes involved in the acquisition and development of the writing system, including the implications of speech in writing over the course of schooling (SCLIAR-CABRAL, 2013; MARCUSCHI & DIONISIO, 2007; STAMPA, 2009; FERREIRA & TEBEROSKY, 1999).

La phonologie du français bordelais : une analyse dans le cadre du Projet de la Phonologie du Français Contemporain (PFC) / Phonology of Bordeaux French : Analysis in the Framework of the Contemporary French Phonology (PFC) Project

Nyawalo, Shureka 21 November 2017 (has links)
This study provides a description and an analysis of the French spoken in Bordeaux and the surrounding communities, based on a corpus of studies following the methodology and the protocol developed within the framework of the Contemporary French Phonology (PFC) Project, developed by Jacques Durand (ERSS, University of Toulouse-Le Mirail), Bernard Laks (MoDyCo, University of Paris X) and Chantal Lyche (University of Oslo and University of Tromsø). Several aspects of the phonology of Bordeaux French are studied, taking into consideration the sociolinguistic diversity of the speakers and the stylistic differences of the linguistic tasks, specifically the Loi de Position for vowels, liaison and schwa. The study detailed here is based on the analysis of audio-recorded interviews of eighteen adults from Bordeaux and the surrounding communities. The participants in this study were interviewed between June and July 2015, according to PFC protocol, and the recordings were transcribed, coded and analyzed by the author, also in accordance with PFC protocol. The speakers were selected in order to represent a balanced diversity in terms of age, sex, level of education, socioeconomic/cultural background, and childhood neighborhood. We observe patterns in terms of the realization of several phonological phenomena. Liaison and schwa are used more in the reading task than in conversation. However, schwa is used the least in the word list. A diachronic analysis reveals that the people from Bordeaux today follow the Loi de Position more than the speakers described in previous research did. We conclude that age is shown to be a statistically significant sociolinguistic factor for this sample of speakers. We also take into account variation in terms of geography, style and chronology. This work contributes to the study of phonological variation in spoken French today.

Description des variétés berbères en danger du Sud-Oranais (Algérie) - Étude dialectologique, phonologique et phonétique du système consonantique / Description of endangered Berber varieties of Sud-Oranais (Algeria) - A Dialectological, phonetic and phonological study of the consonantic system

El Idrissi, Mohamed 08 December 2017 (has links)
There are several Berber languages in the south west of Algeria. Some of them are situated in the so-called Sud-Oranais and they can be categorized as endangered languages. So I have decided to describe them before they disappear. That’s why, I have carried out several fieldworks. But, this linguistic documentation work and cultural heritage conservation are just one of aspects of our thesis. This PhD are transdisciplinary. I have used the methods which are applied in Geographic Information Science (GIS) and in Data Science (DS) to carry out a dialectological study. A geolinguistic study has been undertaken and has enabled to visualize the expansion of the linguistic variation of certain consonants through GIS. Based on these data, I have debated the phonological reality of the simple and geminate consonants. From this research, a dialectometric study was carried out on the basis of data partitioning methods. I have used the Unsupervised Learning Methods (HAC, k-mean, MDS, ...) and the Supervised Learning Methods (CART) known in DS. A visual exploration (linguistic maps, dendogram, heatmap, tree, ...) approach is proposed in order to analyse the results which have been realized through computer processing (R language). Then, I have undertaken a phonetic analysis, which is based on an acoustic study of alveolar rhotics : [ɾ], [r], [ɾˤ] and [rˤ]. These phonic unities are distinguished by their temporality and their articulatory realization. Thus, the spectrograms enabled to examine the distribution of these sounds and to distinguish what was related to phonetic and phonology. Then, this thesis with a phonetic and statistical study has reinforced this research focused on the obstruction made by the tip of the tongue and on the nature of the vocoids which goes along with the alveolar rhotic in the area of the consonants.
