Esse trabalho trata da visão de ética do filósofo francês Paul Ricoeur (19132005), especialmente da interface entre suas propostas éticas e a história. Como forma de abordarmos essa questão, levantamos um debate acerca das considerações de Hayden White sobre a obra de Ricoeur, em que a trata como uma “metafísica da narratividade”. Nesse sentido, fazemos uma leitura de três fases de produção do filósofo francês, estabelecendo algumas conexões contextuais e propondo uma análise teórica do percurso de suas concepções, objetivando a sua relação com a história dos historiadores e com o tema da condição histórica. O objetivo fundamental do trabalho é refletir sobre a dinâmica dessa relação com o desdobramento de seus temas éticos. / This work deals with the ethical vision of the French philosopher Paul Ricoeur (19132005), especially the interface between their ethical proposals and history. In order to approach this question, we raise a debate about Hayden White considerations on the work of Ricoeur, which treats its work as a “Metaphysics of Narrativity”. In this sense, we do a reading of tree stages of production of the French philosopher, establishing some contextual connections and proposing a theoretical analysis of the course of their conceptions, aiming its relation to the history of historians and the theme of the historical condition. The fundamental objective is to reflect on the dynamics of that relationship with the deployment of its ethical issues.

Com o processo rememorativo apontamos para uma forma específica de relação com o passado, desde um diálogo com a fenomenologia de Ricoeur, às perspectivas e conceitos que nos envolveram durante a análise literária serão apresentadas. Interessa-nos o conto como forma literária e dentro desta, as narrativas em primeira pessoa, nas quais discutiremos os atributos do conto no desenvolvimento da atividade rememorativa – no que a teoria do conto será de grande valia. Trataremos de seis narradores, de diferentes contos de Machado de Assis - “Uma por outra”, “Último capítulo” e “Viagem à roda de mim mesmo” - e de Lygia Fagundes Telles - “Papoulas em feltro negro”, “Natal na barca” e “A confissão de Leontina”. O objetivo foi investigar a vivência rememorativa ficcionalizada através do conto, em especial na figura do narrador em primeira pessoa sua experiência com o transcorrer do tempo. ___________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / The present work aims to follow and to study the recollective process as literarily articulated. With “recollective process” we point to a specific mode of relation with the past in which the one who remembers makes an effort to recover and presentify the lived experience. From a dialogue with Ricoeur's Phenomenology the perspectives and concepts which have enveloped us during the literary analysis were presented. It is of our interest the short story as a literary form, and in it, first person narratives, in which we will discuss the short story attributes developed in the recollective activity – for what the short story theory will be valuable. We will discuss six narrators, from different short stories of Machado de Assis – “Uma por outra”, “Último capítulo” and “Viagem à roda de mim mesmo” – and of Lygia Fagundes Telles – “Papoulas em feltro negro”, “Natal na barca” and “A confissão de Leontina”. The goal was to investigate the recollecting lived experience by means of the short story, specifically in the first person narrator figure in his experience with the going by of time.

Ricoeur’s view on forgiveness from a philosophy of history perspective

M.A. (Philosophy) / South Africa has endured many hardships; the most prominent of all is the apartheid regime and effects thereof. Almost twenty years after democracy and freedom from this system of oppression, the hurt and pain generated through the traumatic events during this period linger on. Possibly the most significant effort to overcome these effects and deal with the hurt was the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC). The TRC had many successful accounts of victims confronting their torturers. During these confrontations, the complete truth about an act was revealed, an apology was offered to the victims and the family of the victims, and many times, forgiveness was granted. Forgiveness that was granted was often given in order to help these victims and families of the victims move past the trauma that they experienced. However, one can ask, can victims truly promptly forgive perpetrators of severe violence and murder after hearing the complete truth and hearing the perpetrators apologise? What has happened to the hurt and pain victims experienced during the traumatic event if they have not dealt with it? Does the memory of the event not still stand out in the victims’ mind? It can be said that traumatic memories, if ignored and left unaddressed, would not only affect individuals in various areas of life, but also impact negatively on society as a whole. In all probability, the individual will remain haunted by the effects of a traumatic event and as a result, would subsequently fail to enjoy a higher quality life. If numerous individuals continue to experience persistent, unresolved or untreated after-effects of trauma, one can imagine a society that has become a populace of mourning, anxious, moping and mistrustful citizens. Hence it can be said that there appears to be a need in society at large to address the issue of traumatic memories. These may include, memories associated with typical traumatic events such as rape or murder, and for the purposes of this study in particular, mass murder, for example the Holocaust or severe abuse committed against a group of individuals based on ethnicity and/or race, for example the apartheid system. In defining the term ‘trauma’ it is understood to be a violation against an individual, in the form of an injury. I believe that it is acceptable to state that physical trauma will necessitate psychological trauma. Versteeg (2012:115) has aptly described trauma as follows: It is – literally- a wound: an injury to living tissue, caused by a cut, blow or other impact, typically one in which the skin is cut or broken.

Hermeneútica de los símbolos del mal. Aportes de Paul Ricoeur a la comprensión del problema del mal

Tesis para optar al grado de Doctor en Filosofía. / La presente tesis trata sobre el problema filosófico-teológico del mal. Intenta presentar en forma clara y rigurosa las diferentes maneras cómo se ha planteado el problema realizando una síntesis. Así en la primera parte se muestra en líneas generales las tres grandes preguntas sobre el mal; a saber: la naturaleza del mal (¿qué es el mal?), el origen del mal (¿de dónde proviene?), y las actitudes y propuestas para enfrentarlo y/o superarlo (¿cómo vencerlo?). Después, exponemos las teorías filosóficas más generales sobre el mal que dan cuenta de la relación del mal en el mundo. En la segunda parte complementando lo anterior, se revisan los hitos en la historia del pensamiento sobre el mal: el pensamiento griego, la tradición judía y cristiana, el pensamiento medieval, los siglos XVII y XVIII, y la época contemporánea. En la tercera y cuarta parte se presenta la filosofía de Paul Ricoeur y se analizan sus estudios sobre el problema del mal, respectivamente. Dicho pensador realiza una hermenéutica de los símbolos del mal, representado en la imagen de la mancha, del cautiverio (pecado) y de la carga (culpabilidad). Además se examinan cuatro mitos sobre el origen y el fin del mal: mito cosmogónico, trágico, adámico y órfico; para luego, analizar la evolución de la conciencia moral a partir de la concepción trágica hasta la concepción ética del mal, base de la teodicea. Por último, entregamos las conclusiones generales de nuestra tesis, y en consecuencia, el aporte de Paul Ricoeur al problema del mal.
