This paper presents a study on the characteristics of a static magnetization VRRM - Variable Reluctance Rotating Motor â 1 hp, based on the simulation of machine design using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) with 3D tetrahedral and hexahedral meshes intending to investigate which meshes is the most suited to this study. Three experimental methods to validate the design via Finite Elements were used: method for determining the impedance with AC voltage, the rising time method of DC current phase and falling time of DC current phase method. All tasks of simulation and measurement were performed using a personal computer. To perform the design simulation a numeric simulation software was used with finite element analysis (CST STUDIO SUITE TM 2010Â) in three dimensions, using both, tetrahedral and hexahedral meshes. For measurement tasks also a data acquisition board (DAQ) integrated with two interfaces was used: the LabView and Signal Express both developed by the same manufacturer of the acquisition board (National Instruments) aiming to determine the inductance per phase of the VRRM. From the values obtained of inductance per phase the flux linkage per phase was calculated. Graphs of flux linkage with current and inductance profiles for seven positions are shown and compared with the simulation FEA. Tables showing the values of some differences between the methods in terms of percentage are presented and discussed. An evaluation of all methods was done, showing positives and negatives aspects, limitations and suggestions to improve them. The machine was a studied Variable Reluctance Rotating Motor 6/4 (6 stator poles and 4 poles on the rotor), three-phase, 1 hp, rated current of 10A and speed of 2.000 rpm, designed by the Research Group on Automation and Robotics, Department of Electrical Engineering, Federal University of CearÃ.

Faced with this challenge, the work was organized in four stages. At first stage, there was the involvement of students through a questionnaire about the possibility of using alternative materials for rural construction, such as fibers, palm leaves, polypropylene fiber raffia bags, old tires, PET, clay, etc., followed by the presentation of examples of rustic buildings and facilities for housing animals, reported in the literature, on the Internet and orally among the inhabitants of Satuba micro-region. In the second stage, we seek "knowledge development? based on the construction of diverse animal facilities for family subsistence production, using alternative materials found in Satuba micro-region, together with the community. In the third period, we reviewed, cataloged, organized and worked out an institutional document, as an embryonic proposed model of rustic facilities for breeding, using techniques and alternative materials, developed at the collective research, in order to boost an entire productive circle, from the collection of these materials until the construction of rural facilities for animal production, thus occupying families in an alternative activity, environmentally adequated, without requiring large investments. On fourth stage, we sought to evaluate the change that the experience of rural buildings construction with alternative materials had on the students. It was concluded that the proposal is viable and can be incorporated into the community, with students help, as a process of knowledge elaboration. Data de plantio de gladíolo para comercialização em dois picos de consumo no clima atual e em climas futuros no Rio Grande do Sul utilizando o modelo / Planting date of gladiola for selling in two peaks of market in the current climate and future climate using the PhenoGlad model

Becker, Camila Coelho 21 February 2017 (has links)
Gladiola (Gladiolus x grandiflorus Hort.) is an important cut flower cultivated under field conditions. The air temperature is the main abiotic factor that drives their phenology, therefore the scheduling flowering of gladiola for target markets by defining the optimum planting date. The objective this study was determine the optimum planting date of gladiola aiming harvest spikes for selling on All Souls’ Day and Mother’s Day under current climate and in CMIP5 scenarios in the Rio Grande do Sul State. The PhenoGlad model was used for simulates the developmental stages of gladiola and plant injuries by heat and frost. For simulates the optimum planting date under current climate, input data in the model was minimum and maximum daily temperature of 55 years (1961-2015) from eighteen weather stations across the State. Once optimum planting date was simulated for each maturation group and weather station, with all years, the planting date was averaged for each El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phases to access the ENSO effect on the optimum planting date of gladiola. For simulates the optimum planting date under climate scenarios, input data in the model was minimum and maximum daily temperature of the 32 grid points in the State, for RCP2.6, RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios. The optimum planting date in the future period (2070-2098) was presented as anomalies (difference between the optimum planting date and average optimum planting date in the baseline period (1976-2005) for each grid point and maturation group. The percentage of years with damage was also presented as anomalies. The phenomenon ENSO affects the optimum planting date of gladiola for harvesting on All Souls’ Day. For this growing season, planting date was anticipated for La Niña years (low temperatures) and delayed for Very Strong El Niño (high temperatures). For Mother’s Day, only Very Strong El Niño events affect the development of the gladiola, but different of the growing season for All Souls’ Day, planting date was anticipated for Very Strong El Niño years, and delayed for others ENSO phases. As well as for Very Strong El Niño years, for harvesting on All Souls’ Day, the optimum planting date was delayed in the climate scenarios, due to shortening of the cycle on rising temperatures conditions. For Mother’s Day, the average air temperature exceeded the optimum temperature of the crop in the warmest regions of the State. In these regions, the anomalies of the optimum planting date were negatives because the development rate decreased, delaying flowering. The risk of injuries by heat is more severe in the growing season for harvesting on All Souls’ Day, mainly in the scenario RCP8.5 and warmest regions, where the anomalies reached +70% of years. This results will provide subsidies for the production expansion for others regions of the State in order to harvesting spikes for selling on All Souls’ Day and Mother’s Day.

Desenvolvimento de um equipamento para avaliação da susceptibilidade à fragilização por hidrogênio / Development of an equipment to evaluate the susceptibility to hydrogen assisted cracking

Martiniano, Guilherme Antonelli 28 December 2016 (has links)
Hydrogen embrittlement of metallic materials has been a frequent problem in different industry sectors. Because it is the smallest existing atom, hydrogen diffuses into the microstructure of metallic materials, resulting in internal mechanical stresses that may eventually lead to a catastrophic failure. The most common methods available to analyze this phenomenon are time consuming and expensive. For this reason, it is desired to develop a test method that does not have such disadvantages. In this work it is presented the development of an equipment to rapidly evaluate the susceptibility to hydrogen embrittlement (SHE) of the metallic materials using the rising step load (RSL) bend testing in assisted environment. This equipment has a great advantage over the other evaluation methods of SHE, which is the shortest test time to have representative results. The validation of the infrastructure was performed by testing bars without notches to, whose measured mechanical stress was compared with that returned by the RSL software. In addition, the measurement uncertainty related to the calculation of the mechanical stress in the sample was calculated. The tests to verify the performance of the RSL equipment were carried out on samples of steel AISI 4140 heat treated to a hardness of 40HRC. The effect of the cathodic potential applied to notched bars of AISI 4140 on the SHE was evaluated. The results obtained in the validation phase of the equipment showed errors lower than 1%. The results showed also an increase in SHE with increasing material hardness indicating that there is a high sensitivity to the SHE with respect to the hardness of the sample. The tests carried out using cathodic potential variation showed a direct relationship between this parameter and the SHE of the sample, with saturation of the SHE at -1.1 VAg/AgCl. / Dissertação (Mestrado)

Using Regression-Based Effect Size Meta-Analysis to Investigate Coral Responses to Climate Change

Kornder, Niklas Alexander 15 July 2016 (has links)
Attempts to quantify the effects of ocean acidification and warming (OAW) on scleractinian corals provide a growing body of response measurements. However, placing empirical results into an ecological context is challenging, owing to variations that reflect both natural heterogeneity and scientific bias. This study addresses the heterogeneity of climate change induced changes in coral recruitment and calcification. To discern scientific bias and identify drivers of the remaining heterogeneity, 100 publications were analyzed using a combination of weighted mixed effects meta-regression and factorial effect size meta‑analysis. A linear model was applied to quantify the variation caused by differing stress levels across studies. The least squares predictions were then used to standardize individual study outcomes and effect size meta-analysis was performed on original and standardized outcomes separately. On average, increased temperature significantly reduces larval survival, while ocean acidification impedes settlement and calcification. Coral resistance to OAW is likely governed by biological traits (genera and life cycle stage), environmental factors (abiotic variability) and experimental design (feeding regime, stressor magnitude, and exposure duration). Linear models suggest that calcification rates are driven by carbonate and bicarbonate concentrations, which act additively with warming. Standardizing outcomes to linear model predictions proved useful in discerning strong sources of scientific bias. The approach used in this study can improve modelling projections and inform policy and management on changes in coral community structure associated with the expected future intensification of OAW.

THE INTEGRATION PROCESS OF CLIMATE CHANGE ADAPTATION FOR FLOOD MANAGEMENT IN SPATIAL PLANNING : DRAWING EXAMPLES FROM ÄLVSTADEN-GOTHENBURGBETWEEN 1999-2015

Agdahl, Helen January 2017 (has links)
Due to climate change and natural variations in the hydrological cycle, global mean sea levels are increasing, causing the mean sea levels in different regions of the world to increase. In Sweden, coastal cities are facing rising water levels which is increasing flooding. The coastal community of Gothenburg, Sweden was identified the 18th most vulnerable city in the country both to flooding induced by water level rise and other climate change related impacts. Its location, in proximity of Lake Vänern, and in the mouth of the Göta River and its tributaries: Säveån, Mölndalsån and Lärjeån is heightening flood risk and vulnerability in the area. This thesis aims to contribute in comprehending the integration process of natural hazard and climate change adaptation for flood management in Älvstaden- central Gothenburg between 1999 and 2015. With the main objectives being” how the municipality of Gothenburg has applied the urban land use planning theory for the integration of natural hazard and climate change adaptation, with regards to adaptation for flood management in Älvstaden between 1999 and 2015? “What climate change adaptation policies for flood management have been implemented in Gothenburg within this time frame, and how the policies have been revised to match the reality of flood issues?” And “What improvements would be made in the integration process to better address adaptation for flood management?” A desk-based research and one case study approach was adopted for this study. The findings indicate that although the city has systematically used the steps involved in the integration process of natural hazard and climate change adaptation for flood management, it does not link the policies and the measures applied to adaptation for flood management. Which is an issue as it has led to the exclusion of vital functions of the integration process. Suggestions on how the integration process could be improved are provided.

Dynamique et rhéologie interfaciales à haute fréquence d'une goutte oscillante / Interfacial dynamics and rheology of an oscillating drop at high frequency

Abi Chebel, Nicolas 11 December 2009 (has links)
We present an experimental study of oscillating drop interfacial dynamics at a wide frequency range, especially at high frequency. A characterization method of drops oscillation dynamics has been developed. The oscillations are generated by imposing low amplitude periodic variation of volume to a drop which is attached to a capillary tip. The present method is based on the identification of the drop eigenmodes and the determination of their frequencies and damping rates. It has been applied to characterize several liquid-liquid systems. Three types of interface have been identified. For interfaces of type 1 (heptane/water without added surfactant), each eigenmode is modelled by a weakly damped linear oscillator. Eigenfrequencies and damping rates are well predicted by the linear theory. Interfaces of Types 2 and 3 are obtained by adding crude oil to the disperse phase. Oil native surfactants (asphaltenes, resins) adsorb on the drop interface and provide the latter with viscoelastic behaviour. For young interfaces (type 2 with aging time below 20 minutes), eigenfrequencies remain well predicted by the theory, which deals with non contaminated interfaces, whereas the measured damping rates are significantly higher than the theoretical values. On the other hand, aged interfaces (type 3) exhibit different eigenmodes, of which eigenfrequencies are much higher than the resonance frequencies measured for the young interfaces. At high frequency, the dynamics of aged interfaces are governed by the elasticity of the network constituted by the crude oil amphiphilic species, while the dynamics of young interfaces are governed by interfacial tension. Freely decaying oscillations of a rising drop in a liquid at rest without added surfactant were also considered. Measured frequencies for the first four eigenmodes are in good agreement with the linear theory. However, measured damping rates are much higher than the theoretical rates for non contaminated interfaces. In fact, residual adsorbed species at the heptane/water interface induce Marangoni effects and thus gradients of interfacial tension. Therefore, vorticity production within the boundary layers is enhanced, which explains the observed increase of the oscillation damping rates.

Rethinking globalization and the transnational capitalist class: a corporate network approach toward the China-U.S. trade war and inter-imperialist rivalry

Chen, David 25 September 2020 (has links)
The arrest of Meng Wanzhou and the Huawei prosecution have revealed a mounting battle for high-tech supremacy between the United States and China. The ongoing technology war and the trade war are merely one dimension of a far-reaching and accelerating imperialist rivalry. The changing reality on the world stage has urged a reconsideration of the thesis of transnational capitalist class (TCC) and theory of globalization in general. By reviewing the historical debate between the globalist and critical realist schools, I argue that William Carroll’s theoretical frame of global capitalism grounded in corporate network research through emphasizing a dialectical process of the ‘making’ of the TCC is better equipped to explain the unfolding Sino-U.S. conflict. Following Carroll’s multilayered approach to corporate network research, I conduct a corporate network analysis to examine the directorate interlocks of 40 Chinese transnational corporations (TNCs) selected from the Fortune Global 500 list. My study has found that the transnational networks of Chinese TNCs have remained considerably sparse, contained within condensed national networks. The globalization of Chinese TNCs and Chinese corporate elite has been modest and has not undermined or replaced the national base. This is due to two crucial reasons: the statist character of Chinese capitalist class and the regionalized development of global capitalism and class formation. In concordance with Carroll’s network research of Western companies, my study of corporate China reaffirms the fragility of the TCC, its internal friction, and potential decomposition. It also provides a material ground for analyzing the Sino-U.S. inter-imperialist rivalry as a structural development out of global capitalism and its class relations. My thesis study, therefore, offers the first attempt to draw a direct linkage between corporate network formation and geopolitical conflict. / Graduate
