Mandalans mittpunkt : Arketyper och symboler i Susan Coopers Mörkret stiger

Nygård, Maria January 2007 (has links)
The aim of this study is to analyse the archetypical patterns and symbols in Susan Cooper’s The Dark is Rising. An archetype is, in literary studies, a concept used to describe an image, symbol or narrative pattern which is very frequently occurring , for example the Hero archetype. Archetype theories today are mainly based on the work of psychiatrist C.G. Jung or literary theorist Northrop Frye. The Dark is Rising is a series of five fantasy books for children, in which an old struggle between two cosmic forces, Light and Dark, is about to reach its final battle. This study shows how The Dark is Rising follows an archetypical narrative pattern in which the aim is to create a whole – the Self, in Jungian theory. The conception of the world in The Dark is Rising is an archetypical one. The world was once whole, but later divided in two opposing forces – Light and Dark. In the final book, when the Dark is defeated and the Light leaves Earth to the humans, the world is whole again. The life of main character Will Stanton also follows this pattern, making him an archetypical Hero. His development can be seen as the process of individuation, which in Jungian theory is the process of creating a whole, unified Self by integrating the conscious and the unconscious. Also the Mandala, which is a very important symbol in the books, is an archetypical symbol for unity and the Self.

Taiwanese EFL Learners¡¦ Production of English Noun-verb Stress Contrast: Phonetic Characteristics and Intelligibility Evaluations

Cheng, Hsiao-wen 25 August 2011 (has links)
The present study aims to investigate how the acoustic cues (i.e., mean pitch, duration, and mean intensity) are utilized by Taiwanese EFL learners to produce English noun-verb stress contrasts in falling and rising intonation. In addition, we examine how English native speakers perceive the English noun-verb stress contrasts produced by Taiwanese EFL learners. To examine English noun-verb stress contrasts in falling intonation, eight Taiwanese EFL learners, either in advanced level or intermediate level, recorded six English noun-verb stress contrasts which were put in a sentence frame (i.e., No, it is ______.), and four native speakers of English were also recruited for recording as a basis for comparison. Then, the vowels of the stressed and unstressed syllables were measured in terms of mean pitch, duration, and mean intensity. The results suggest that Taiwanese EFL learners in advanced or intermediate level produce English noun-verb stress contrasts by utilizing mean pitch, duration, and mean intensity, but the extent they utilize mean pitch is different from English native speakers. That is, they produced stressed syllables that are less high-pitched than English native speakers. To investigate how Taiwanese EFL learners utilize the correlates to produce the English noun-verb stress contrasts in rising intonation, the same groups of speakers also recorded the six English noun-verb stress contrasts put in another sentence frame (i.e., Did you say ______?), and the vowels of the stressed and unstressed syllables were measured and analyzed. The results show that Taiwanese EFL learners, either in advanced or intermediate level, utilize duration, but not mean pitch, to produce the noun-verb contrasts, while English native speakers use both duration and mean pitch. To examine how English native speakers perceive the English noun-verb stress contrasts with Taiwanese-accent, another eight English native speakers participated in doing several tasks including identification tasks, accent-rating tasks, and comprehensibility tasks. The results suggest that although Taiwanese EFL learners¡¦ production of the six English noun-verb stress contrasts in falling intonation was rated as foreign-accented, our eight English native speakers can identify their production with higher accuracy. In contrast, production in rising intonation was also rated as foreign-accented; however our English native speakers have difficulties in identifying their production.

Investigation Of Air Bubble Motion In Water Through A Vertical Narrow Rectangular Channel By Using Image Processing Techniques

Ozdemir, Sancak 01 August 2005 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis presents the study of air bubble motion in stagnant water and in upward flowing water through a vertical narrow rectangular channel of 2.1X66.5 mm cross section by using image processing and analyzing techniques. The investigated bubble size range is 2 - 70 mm in area equivalent bubble diameter and mean water flow velocity is 0-25 cm/s. This study focuses on the quantitative assessment of bubble size (perimeter, area, volume, width and height), shape, path and rising velocity. The observed bubble shapes consist of circular, ellipse, ellipse wobbling, hat wobbling, cap-hat, cap and cap-bullet types. Ellipse wobbling and hat wobbling type bubble region show transition from ellipsoidal to circular cap region. The results of the ellipse bubble tests were compared with the rise velocity correlation of ellipsoidal bubbles in infinite medium and an empirical correlation for two dimensional ellipse bubbles was obtained. The cap bubble rise velocities measured in this study were compared with the correlations in literature and a new empirical correlation which is different from those given in the literature was obtained from the experimental results of this study. The trends of the cap bubble deformation which is defined as bubble height to bubble width ratio, for various water streams are almost similar in behavior. Therefore, a correlation was obtained from the measured cap bubble deformation values in water stream. The experimental results show that the bubble relative velocity under co-current flow conditions for area equivalent bubble diameter to channel width ratio, &amp / #955 / ae&lt / 0.6 is less than that under stagnant water condition. After bubble shapes reach to the slug type (&amp / #955 / ae &amp / #8805 / 0.6), relative bubble velocities pass over the terminal bubble velocities in stagnant water. If the water velocity is increased further, the bubble relative velocity increases in the slug bubble region. Rising velocities of slug bubbles were analyzed using the experimental data and a new correlation for slug bubble rise velocity was proposed for flowing water condition.

This study has as main goal to investigate and analyze, under the Syllable Theory (Selkirk, 1982) and the Autosegmental Theory (Clements & Hume, 1995), the epenthetic process in the L2 Spanish Language Acquisition, by Brazilian Portuguese native speakers. The palatal glide insertion [j] promotes the formation of a rising diphthong in a contexto which there is not into the target language. In order to develop the research, it was collected data from 34 Letters Course students - Portuguese and Spanish; from first, third and seventh semester of Pelotas Federal University. For the corpus constitution, it was proposed an instrument composed by isolated words reading, sentences reading and authentic texts, as well as sociolinguistic interview. After the auditory and codificaton, the data were submitted to the GoldVarb 2001(3.0b3 version) Computational Program, it was controlled the linguistics and extralinguistics variables. The results showed that the preferred context of the palatal glide insertion [j] is a closed syllable, from CVC standard and that the previous and ahead contexto carry, preferably, médium-high vowel, besides that, the early level in the formal Spanish study as L2, is the one which stands out at the palatal glide usage.

Estudo da influência do levantamento de eixos em veículos comerciais no desempenho na frenagem e na estabilidade direcional / Study of commercial vehicles elevated axle influence on braking performance and on directional stability

Eduardo Piquera Vianna 22 March 2006 (has links)
The systems that elevate the axles of the commercial vehicles were initially developed with the objective of saving tires. The use of these systems was restricted, not causing a notable statistical effect in the vehicle safety. Due to an agreement between road concessionaires and the government, the commercial vehicles pay toll value according to the number of axles in contact with the soil on that moment, minimizing the taxes of the vehicles using this system. This practice was diffused quickly and few technical studies were accomplished focusing its influence in the vehicle safety. The elevated axles alters in a significant way the vehicle static margin of stability and the ideal distribution of the braking forces, increasing the accident risks. This work consist in deepened studies of the commercial vehicles with these systems of elevation of axles, of the technical and operational point of view, focusing the vehicle safety. For this is used as methodology mathematical models developed already in the scientific literature in vehicles examples. Parameters as the margin of stability, steer gradient, braking efficiency and others are analyzed. Likewise, the effects in the directional response during the transient maneuvers and in the initial instants of the braking. The influences of the elevation of the axes are analyzed according to norms and established requirements for ABNT and ECE R13, including annex 10, because the practice of the elevation of the axes can be infringing requirements imposed by these norms. As main conclusion these systems are prejudicial to vehicle dynamics and handling and its use could be anticipated in conceptual and design phase and in brazilian transport laws.

The Impact of Inflation on Capital Rotation in Inflationary Inflection Points : An Investigation on How Inflation Affects Capital Rotation Between Major Market Sectors as Economies Shift from Disinflation to Reflation

Hansson, Lars Lucas Philip, Berzups, Lukas January 2021 (has links)
There has been a multi-decade disinflationary period that, with the conjunction of recent pandemic-related events, led to extremes in various economic metrics: record lowest interest rates and inflation, increasingly loose monetary and fiscal policies leading to severe debt levels and money supply - all resulting in a multi-front pressure on inflation to start increasing, and after 30 years, for economic environments to reach an inflection point from disinflation to reflation. How would various market sectors perform if suddenly inflation starts to surge? Previous research of similar events, such as in the 1970s, as well as theory, points towards certain market sectors and asset classes, such as commodities, to outperform their peers. Research on this topic is fairly scarce, thus, to better prepare for such an inflationary event and gain insight on which market sectors are best to invest in or avoid, this paper conducts an investigation to explore that scenario. By looking at 11 major market sectors over 10 countries' historic inflationary points that shifted from disinflation to reflation, analysis determined that, while certain sectors are indeed more sensitive to changes in inflation than others, many more are sensitive to changes in interest rates that normally accompany inflation. Sectors such as Energy, Consumer Discretionary and Financials would perform well during this period, while sectors such as Information Technology would historically underperform. Contrary to the theory, not enough relation was discovered by the analysis towards the commodity sector as a whole to overperform, however, that does not mean that none exist. Further research is still required on this topic to increase knowledge and awareness so that the negative impact of inflationary events like the ones of the 1930s and 1970s can be avoided and even taken advantage of.
