A disaggregated Marshallian macroeconometric model of South Africa

Ngoie, Jacques Kibambe 24 September 2009 (has links)
The thesis enticingly describes a synergetic mix of productivity related topics at macroeconomic level. It aims at whetting potential readers to understand in more insightful ways topics such as: (1) the use of human capital in sectoral growth; (2) the role played by rising public expenditures (health and education) in strengthening production activities; (3) the role played by disaggregation in improving models’ forecasting ability and policy guidance; etc. The current research constitutes a valuable tool for understanding and predicting a country’s overall economic behavior and the behavior of important industrial sectors. In the present study, lack of data on important variables at sectoral level led to the use of advanced econometric estimation methods such as the implied transfer function equations system. As cited in the thesis, the literature reports a set of interesting economic investigations in this field that have been successful in describing some of the features included in this study. However, this research not only enhances the theoretical discussion on the issue but also provides empirical evidence using South African data. It is anticipated that further use and development of the outcomes of this thesis will yield additional explanatory, predictive and policy-making results that will be useful to many. In addition to the usefulness of this thesis’ contribution to the body of knowledge, several suggestions for further improvement are considered. Most predominantly, the work presented in this thesis has been reported in two interrelated papers (chapters). In the first paper, a methodical discussion is provided on the use and the size of social ingredients estimated as the level of normalized human capital per capita together with the conditional convergence process applied to South African sectoral growth. In the second paper, the parameters obtained are embodied into a full-fledged Macroeconometric (Marshallian) Model employing South African economic sectors. In fact, the second paper goes beyond the simple discussion of a Disaggregated Macroeconometric Model. It provides a comprehensive analysis of the effects that freedom (Thatcher-like) reforms may induce to the South African economy. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2009. / Economics / unrestricted

Rusko jako rostoucí moc v multilaterálních institucích / Russia as a rising power in multilateral institutions

Ananyeva, Ekaterina January 2020 (has links)
Russia as a rising power in multilateral institutions looks at the Russian attitude towards all institutions this country participated in 2001-2015. I address the questions of what is the attitude of Moscow and what determines the country's choice of attitude patterns. Drawing from the works of those specializing in rising powers and Russian foreign policy, I seek answers to my research questions and contribute to both strings of literature. The parsimonious hypothesis suggests that Russia's attitude depends on its position within the institution. In cases when Moscow holds a strong position in an institution, the country develops a supportive attitude; Russia's weak position within an institution translates into a challenger attitude. I endorse the existing studies by arguing and further supporting with data that Russia tends to be a revisionist in West-led hard-issue institutions it joined after the end of the Cold War. The data points at the supportive attitude pattern also in situations when Russia holds a strong position in institutions it co-founded as a rising power status in the last two decades. The primary data source for the dissertation is the recently released online archive of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation. Analyzed with the sentiment analysis software, the...

Sjödén, Sandra January 2022 (has links)

Místo paměti: Irské národní muzeum a komemorace velikonočního povstání ve výstavě Proclaiming a Republic / The Site of Memory: National Museum of Ireland and Commemoration of Easter Rising in the Proclaiming a Republic Exhibition

Špína, Vladimír January 2021 (has links)
The Proclaiming a Republic: The 1916 Rising (2016-2020) exhibition was opened by the National Museum of Ireland as a part of the Decade of Centenaries project to commemorate the Easter Rising. This thesis understands the exhibition as a place of memory, which on the occasion of the centenary represents the official memory of the rising, and it aims to analyze this memory. The exhibition is perceived through the SANE framework as a mnemonic formation and the emphasis is put on narrative of the exhibition. Analysis of which is based on presumptions of the new museology, according to which modern museums utilize either hegemonic (celebratory, status quo-maintaining) or counter-hegemonic (minority, status quo-denying) narratives. The content of the exhibition (texts, exhibits, photographs), which was documented by the author of this thesis during repeated visits in 2017 and 2018, is subjected to thematic analysis. By applying the thematic network method, nine so-called global themes - macro-themes depicting who / what, how and by what is the exhibition commemorating - are identified within the narrative of the exhibition. The thesis determines that the exhibition, despite expectations of the new museology, reinforces traditional myths of the Easter Rising and employs predominantly dominant narratives....

The Untold Story of Baba Island : Sustainable Livelihood: The Revival of Fishing Community andEcology of Baba Island, Karachi

Ahmad, Mahum January 2022 (has links)
Once covered by dense mangrove forest, Baba Island was inclusive of a group of Islands protecting the Kolachi settlement from storms and invasion.  Kolachi Jo Goth (fisherman’s village) transformed into the present-day megacity of Karachi when the British conquered and established it as a harbour for trade. Baba Island was no exception to the change as the British started moving the fishermen from the centre further out to the Islands while establishing their residential colonies.  This displacement of a chunk of the community led to the invasion of mangrove land and hence came about a dependent community - known as Baba Goth (Island). The infrastructure and main fishery including the fish markets were all still inland, apart from this as the city grew development happened inland and the community became forgotten over time. The once pristine waters are polluted, mangroves forests diminishing, fish depletion in the sea, lack of infrastructure and skills, rising sea levels and economic impoverishment have all led to the Baba community's vulnerability.  This thesis recognizes the degrading conditions of the Baba community, especially in the current context of climate change. Through the lens of sustainability, the project understands the practices and economic activities of the residents to derive solutions. It promotes regenerating coastal ecology to prevent land loss from seawater intrusion and storms. Ecofishing, waste and water management are the other main strategic solutions explored in the project. In all, the thesis aims to provide strategies for self-sufficiency and minimize their dependency on the city.

Amphibious Architecture: Living with a Rising Bay

Anderson, Heather Christine 01 June 2014 (has links) (PDF)
Over the past century, sea level has risen nearly eight inches along the California coast and climate scientists suggest substantial increases in sea level as a significant impact of climate change over the coming century. This project explores the concept of creating a sustainable living environment for seaside residents in Redwood City as an alternative to permanent construction on land in the event of a substantial rise in sea level. This project will generate a flood-resilient design solution that is capable of rising and falling with the water. In order to ensure the well-being of the inhabitants, I will analyze a number of case studies, notably the Netherland’s water dwellings, New Orleans’s amphibious residences and Sausalito’s floating communities, for the purpose of identifying key themes that will facilitate the construction of a single-family amphibious residence in Redwood City. This project is a response to environmental design challenges raised by ongoing atmospheric events such as the gradual rise in sea level and disastrous events such as Hurricane Katrina in 2005 where extreme flooding due to failed coastal defenses exhibited catastrophic effects on coastal residences, its inhabitants, and the surrounding ecosystem.

Felice, Ana Carolina Garcia Lima 28 February 2012 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / In the present research we performed a descriptive analysis from the rising of the middle vowels pretonic with speakers from Uberlândia - MG. Following the variational method, we conducted interviews with the goal of seeking the vernacular speech of our informants. Thus, we compose a corpus with 5.199 words from the speech of 24 informants stratified by sex, age and education level, as established by GEFONO, group of studies in phonology, cooriented by Professor José Sueli de Magalhães . In addition to the extralinguistic factors used for the composition of research cells, we use linguistic factors, such as tonic vowel height, weight of pretonic syllabic, nasal / oral pretonic vowel; distance of pretonic vowel in relation to the stressed syllable, the pretonic syllable weight of the word, phonological preceding context: articulation point; preceding phonological context: continuity / non-continuity of the preceding consonant; following phonological context: articulation point; following phonological context: continuity / non continuity of following consonant. The data collected were passed through coding and run the program called GoldVarb. The factors considered relevant by the program, to the middle vowels pretonic rising were analyzed by us and then represented by geometry of features, phonological theory Autossegmental by Clements and Hume (1995). Our analysis was based on studies from Bisol (1981), Viegas (1987); Callou and Leite (1986); Callou, Leite and Coutinho (1991), Schwindt (2002), Silveira (2008); Cassique, Cruz, Dias and Oliveira (2009) and Wetzels (1992). At the end f this research, we conclude that the rising of the middle vowels occurs in Uberlândia and can be characterized by both aspects, neogrammarians where the rules of harmonizations applies and diffusionist when there is rising without apparent reason or cases that there is oscillation between rising form and not rising form.
