Laughing in Space: Robert Heinlein's The Moon is a Harsh Mistress and Towards a New Humor Framework

Unknown Date (has links)
Humor’s effect on the audience’s relationship to the object, or speaker, of humor has often been neglected, and creating a framework by which scholars can examine how humor works to alter the relationship between audience and other fills this gap. Additionally, the definition of science fiction relies on the existence of a cognitively estranging other and under this definition, humor has not been thoroughly studied. This thesis attempts to explain how humor affects audiences cognitively, utilizing Hegel’s theory of self and other, and then applies this theoretical explanation to the field of science fiction and examines its effects. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (M.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2017. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

Negatividade e ruptura: configurações da crítica de Robert Kurz / Negativity and rupture: configurations of Robert Kurz\'s critique

Regatieri, Ricardo Pagliuso 11 March 2010 (has links)
The aim of this Masters thesis is to deal with some aspects of the critical approach which has been elaborated by Robert Kurz in the last few years. The analysis intends (1) to show how Kurz recovers, reformulates and expands the marxian critique of value and fetishism, (2) to examine, in this appropriation and rereading accomplished by the author, the mediation of the Critical Theory and (3) to point out the results achieved by Kurz concerning the themes that are discussed here. The thesis focuses on Kurzs theoretical construction encompassing the following topics: critique of traditional Marxism, critique of the subject and resignification of the concept of fetishism. The focus on these topics allows to realize how Kurzs elaboration fulfills a critique of the Modernity itself which addresses to its grounds.

The American jurist Robert Cover developed important reflections on fundamental aspects of the theory of law, such as the genesis of social normativity and the legitimacy of the courts. Since he could not systematize his writings in a relatively coherent way, Cover’s work stood as a source of many reflections, but also many questions, for his commentators and critics. The different interpretations and appropriations of his thought show that his thinking is still largely an open book. The aim of this thesis is to present Cover’s main ideas and to demonstrate that his thinking remains current and relevant as a source of insights into contemporary law. To do so, our exposition takes up two tasks. First, it seeks to reconstruct Cover's thinking from his main texts and ideas. In a second moment, it proposes a speculation on possible theoretical paths pointed by his work. Our reconstruction of is centered on two major milestones of his work: the essays Nomos and Narrative (1983) – where Cover elaborates his most influential concepts, like nomos and jurisgenesis – and Violence and the Word (1986) – in which Cover suggests that legal interpretation is established in a "field of pain and death" and is inseparable from violence. The central messages of these two essays have been interpreted by commentators and critics as partially or totally contrary. Considering them as equally fundamental to understanding Cover's thinking, the paper resorts to some of these debates in search of an interpretation that can reconcile the two approaches. Finally, based on this interpretation, it suggests that Cover's work could be read as containing the idea of a normative pluralism, an expression that has two meanings here: it connotates not only the adoption of a plurality of normative sources but also the presence of normative criteria to evaluate law critically.

Robert Alexy, fundamental rigths, legal speach and practical rationality. ¿A realistic reading? / Robert Alexy, derechos fundamentales, discurso jurídico y racionalidad práctica. ¿Una lectura realista?

Pozzolo, Susanna 10 April 2018 (has links)
This article focuses on the analysis of the literature produced by Robert Alexy, a renowned German jurist, focusing on the concept of fundamental rights, which are, in a constitutional state of law, the ultimate goal of the legal system. Thus, for Alexy the rights of people are not moral, but rather legal. It is in this sense and taking as a starting point the conception of fundamental rights that the author proposes a tentative reading from a moderate realistic perspective of some aspects of the theoretical position of Alexy.

A study of Scotland's relationship to the British Empire as depicted in the work of Robert Louis Stevenson, R.B. Cunninghame Graham and John Buchan

Wishart, Kirsti January 2001 (has links)
This thesis explores the relationship between Scotland and the British Empire as depicted in the work of three Scottish writers: Robert Louis Stevenson, R.B. Cunninghame Graham and John Buchan. The aim is to reassess the contribution these three writers made to Scottish literature, a contribution that has been neglected due to their interest and participation in imperial matters. The introduction discusses why their reappraisal within Scottish literary studies matters in relation to an understanding of the effect of Scotland's position within the Empire. Recent post-colonial theory relating to hybridity and the uncanny are shown to be of particular relevance to the Scottish situation in late-nineteenth and early twentieth-century literature. Chapter One examines the work of Robert Louis Stevenson and argues that, far from capitulating to the demands of imperialist literature, Stevenson was able both to work within the discourse of the British Empire and to subvert it. R. B. Cunninghame Graham, discussed in Chapter Two, occupies a similar position. Due to the genre-defying nature of his work Graham has been overlooked as a writer who confuses the boundaries between here and there, the savage and the civilised. Chapter Three provides a critical reassessment of John Buchan and argues that, despite his staunch imperialism, as a Scot within the Empire Buchan shared many thematic concerns with the other two writers in this study. The conclusion draws attention to the similarities between the three writers and argues that a clear break cannot be made between writers associated with the Empire and writers of the Scottish Renaissance.

De l’espèce humaine : affronter l’urgence écologique avec Robert Antelme et Hans Jonas / On human species : confronting the ecological emergency with Robert Antelme et Hans Jonas

D'Ambrosio-Boudet, Flore 13 June 2018 (has links)
The starting point of my study is the observation that the current ecological emergency (global warming, biodiversity crisis, pollution) shapes our long-term historical condition. The ecological emergency, which results from identifiable economic and social activities, threatens the continued sustainability of a wide range of species and places the future of our species in jeopardy. My dissertation in philosophy consequently explores the concept of human species, which I address from the point of view of its evolving and ecological naturality. In so doing, I intend to take note of the end of a pre-Darwinian definition, and at the same time I refuse to pave the way for any racialist biologism and for the criminal hierarchies it brought about. What is at stake here for theoretical research is the elaboration of an ontology of human species, which will not give in to any deceptive naturalizing doctrine and will provide us with landmarks to face the ecological emergency. This ontology builds upon two authors, Hans Jonas and Robert Antelme, who endured the experience of Nazism. Their works are central to elaborate a non-reductionist dialectical monism, which can generate an ethics of our life in the world and an ethics of greater recognition and extended solidarity. I argue that the ecological emergency is political in so far as it is the future of collective destinies which is at stake. My approach dismisses the urge to save the human species – or parts of it - by resorting to biotechnological enhancements which would supposedly help our species to step beyond the catastrophe or even beyond “humanity” while shirking our responsibility here and now. I accordingly claim that deeper consideration of planetary boundaries - as well as the spectre of death and the desire for power they imply - calls for a work on the conditions in which humans and non-humans can properly inhabit the world and the democratic experience can be renewed without giving way to panic.

Bunsen's instruments and their educational applications / Los aparatos de Bunsen y su aplicación didáctica

Domínguez Gómez, Rosa, Torralba Marco, Rosario, Escudero González, Pilar, Martín Sánchez, Manuela, Martín Sánchez, Manuela 25 September 2017 (has links)
On the occasion of the two hundredth anniversary of the birth of Robert Wilhelm Bunsen (1811-1899) in 2011, we have prepared a historical study of all instruments or devices this German chemist used, and the improvements he introduced in them. The main aim of our study has a teaching purpose: helping Chemistry students (either High School or first-year college students) get involved with this subject. Hence, our work has two different parts: firstly, the historical study of the equipment and, secondly, its didactic application.
