Sentiments of sexism: Cultural transmission and men's motivation.

This work fulfills a three-fold purpose. First, it identifies and conceptualizes patriarchal imposition as a social problem. Patriarchal imposition refers to a category of micro-level, social interaction in which male actors attain desired social outcomes at the expense of female actors. Date rape provides an example of such imposition. Second, this work elaborates an integrative theoretical understanding of the socio-cultural production of patriarchal imposition by joining three diverse paradigms: abstract individualism, social rationalism, and identity maintenance. Integration is accomplished by providing elaborations of each paradigm separately, by critically comparing propositions generated from each paradigm, and by treating mutually exclusive propositions as suggesting alternative pathways in the production of social action. This integration yields three central propositions: (1) the socio-cultural presentation of stereotypically dominant male identities and stereotypically submissive female identities influences men's motivation for patriarchal imposition, (2) the socio-cultural presentation of gendered conflicts of interest with respect to outcomes of social interaction influences men's motivation for patriarchal imposition, and (3) the socio-cultural presentation of males as disproportionately successful in attaining desired outcomes in gendered conflict influences men's motivation for patriarchal imposition. In addressing the third purpose, this work applies a unique method of content analysis on a sample of popular motion pictures, the top-ten box-office successes for each year 1986-1990. This content analysis deconstructs the sample into an aggregate data set of gendered relationships and interaction events of gendered conflict. Statistical procedures of logistic regression are applied to this data, and results support each central proposition. Qualitative interpretation of the data provide further support and also identify emergent themes in the cultural portrayal of gendered conflict. These results indicate that paradigmatic debate of patriarchal culture's influence on men's motivation disguises the reality that varying perspectives offer similar conclusions, namely that patriarchal culture does influence men's motivation for patriarchal imposition in various ways. The real debate concerns the politics of social change.

The thesis The Part of the Teacher in the Present Society is trying to give account to the readers how the part of the teacher has changed in the last years and what all up has involved this change. The thesis is divided into seven parts. The first capture should introduce the reader philosophical and sociological context of the upbringing. In the following capture the reader is familiarized with the teacher's profession and with everything what it yields. In the next capture the parts that the present teacher can perform are outlined. It is not their detailed recitation, but the roundup of the expectancy that are placed on the present teacher. In the fourth capture there is a brief list of law documents where the teacher's profession is defined. The fifth capture describes the form and the principles of the educational revision and the following capture acquaints the readers with the changes of the teacher's profession after the educational revision. The seventh capture attends to the new form of the state maturita exam and the related difference for teachers. This thesis should not describe only the changes which the educational revision has brought, but above all it should contribute to understand the formidable and difficult part of the teachers in the present society.

Perceptions of registered nurses regarding their capability to care for soldiers experiencing mental illness at a military hospital in South Africa

Magister Curationis - MCur / Background: Psychiatric nursing in a military setting is aimed at sustaining and facilitating a healthy lifestyle and performance in the achievement of mental health among soldiers. A Registered Nurse (RN) in the military plays a vital role in patient care from time of admission up to discharge. At military hospitals psychiatric nursing personnel are expected to nurse and manage mental ill patients without the help of security guards. This leaves nurses exposed to violence, abuse and psychological distress resulting in poor communication and interaction between RNs and mentally ill patients. Aim and objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the perceptions of RNs regarding their capability to care for soldiers experiencing mental illness at a military hospital in South Africa. The objectives of the study were to determine the therapeutic commitment, role support and role competency of RNs towards mentally ill patients. Method: A quantitative-descriptive, cross-sectional study design was used in this study. The population is (N=154) RNs of the identified military hospital in South Africa. All the RNs were accessible at 2 Military Hospital and therefore a total enumeration sample was used with (n=117). Statistical Package for the Social Sciences, (SPSS) version 24 was used to analyse data. Findings: The response rate of the study revealed that there is a correlation to gender in relation to therapeutic commitment and role competency. There was a correlation to RNs that had basic psychiatry in relation to therapeutic commitment and role support. The study also indicated there is a correlation to therapeutic commitment, role support and role competency to the period that military RNs worked in Mental Health (MH). There were no trained advanced psychiatric nurses at the military hospital. There were also positive correlations in therapeutic commitment and role competency in the rank of military RNs.

Predictive Relationships Between School Counselor Role Ambiguity, Role Diffusion, and Job Satisfaction

Lack of clarity about professional roles and responsibilities of school counselors has resulted in role ambiguity and role diffusion among this group of professionals. Role ambiguity and role diffusion contribute to job dissatisfaction. The purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to examine whether role ambiguity and role diffusion predicted school counselor job satisfaction after controlling for years of experience as a school counselor, and to examine whether role ambiguity, role diffusion, and job satisfaction differed for school counselors at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. The theoretical framework was role theory, which conceptualizes how job roles within organizations serve as boundaries between individuals and organizations. Survey data were collected from 86 school counselors at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. Results of linear regression analysis indicated that role ambiguity and role diffusion were significant predictors of job satisfaction after controlling for years of school counselor work experience. Results of discriminant analysis indicated no significant differences in school counselor role ambiguity, role diffusion, and job satisfaction based on school level. Findings may be used to advocate for aligning school counselors' duties and responsibilities with the training and education they receive, which may enable school counselors to be more satisfied in their jobs. The social change implication is that school counselors who are satisfied with their jobs could more effectively serve the children, schools, and communities in which they are assigned.

The Ecosystem Role of Fishes in Lotic Environments

It is important for humans to understand how ecosystems work because we depend on them for a variety of products and services. For example, rivers and streams provide fisheries, improved water quality, and recreational opportunities to many individuals. In rivers, interactions among fishes, other stream plants and animals, and the physical river environment can influence continued provision of these valuable services. However, the role played by many freshwater fishes in the provision of these services remains unknown. Additionally, it is important to identify different factors that affect the outcome of interactions involving riverine fishes. To address these issues, I evaluated how fishes influence different properties of rivers and streams, using a combined approach that summarized previous studies of fish effects on trophic structure and organic matter processing and incorporated field work in natural systems. Overall, my work demonstrated that fishes can play important roles in rivers and streams. In particular, fish spawning migrations from lakes to streams can introduce nutrients to streams. Compared with other nutrient sources for streams, nutrients delivered by fish migrations can be substantial, and they may be used by other plants and animals in the stream to increase productivity. Beyond nutrient introduction, the physical disturbance of river sediments caused by the spawning activity of large migratory fishes can influence the availability of food resources for other stream animals. Additionally, my summary of previous fish studies indicated the consistent influence of fishes on nutrient dynamics and other stream organisms. While the role of riverine fishes varies, natural resource managers and researchers should focus on understanding how these widespread organisms influence valuable ecosystem services derived from freshwater resources.

Trouser Roles - The development of the role in opera from the seventeenth to twentieth century

This document presents the development trouser role. The first part is concentrated in the seventeenth century when the use of castrati was the main business in church music. Later in the same chapter is presented the development of women in opera, which so far was not a common practice, and how and why they dominate the opera after the castrati were not an accepted practice anymore. The following chapters contain demonstrations of trouser role’s types. Each chapter is based in one role of an opera from a different period of history. From Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice to Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier, the pants role is exemplified from a different point of view according to their importance in opera.
