Skräcken i Lådan : En studie om rumslig åskådarmedvetenhet i George A. Romeros tre klassiska skräckfilmer / The Horror in the Box : A study of the spectator´s spatial awareness in George A. Romero´s three horror film classics

Andersson, Björn January 2013 (has links)
This thesis focus on the presentation of the filmic room the viewer sees in George A. Romero´s three horror classics Night, Dawn and Day of the Dead. The hypothesis goes as follow; fear and element of tension becomes greater if the audience/viewer has a good knowledge about the filmic room in the film, in other words, a good spatial awareness. The conclusion is that it does. The environment is active in its becoming and in its presentation to the viewer. Rooms and places, even objects, is a catalyst and a mean to create emotion. To tackle the problem regards to human emotion, which is highly subjective, ANT (actant-network-theory) is used. This theory is a tool to help decode what it is we find emotionally enticing regards to room and objects in the films.

No ocaso do império, um projeto de nação : Silvio Romero e a história da literatura brasileira / THE DECLINE OF THE EMPIRE, A PROJECT OF THE NATION: Silvio Romero and the history of Brazilian literature.

Lemos, Wagner Gonzaga 20 July 2012 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This study is the result of a bibliographic and with study of documents research which deals with the importance of sergipano critic Silvio Romero (1851-1914) and his masterpiece História da Literatura Brasileira (1888) at the end of the nineteenth century. That work is found to be a project of nation, in the different meanings that the word project have, which Romero sought to consolidate through the letters by establishing canons and including in his broad concept of literature a large variety of cultural productions that could be seen at the time. Therefore, his masterwork was the first to conjoin scientific and conceptual principles in Brazilian literary history. In this text, we consider the construction of the national identity in the modern states as well as we deal with nation s narrative relevance from literature s perspective. Moreover, taking into consideration the contextualization of the nineteenth century in Brazil, it was our focus not only Romero s masterpiece, but also European and national authors who analysed literature in our country before him, such as Barbosa Machado, Ferdinand Denis, Gonçalves de Magalhães, Joaquim Norberto Sousa e Silva, Cônego Fernandes Pinheiro and Machado de Assis. In this sense, we discuss the role performed by school in the process of canon legitimation as well as in the affirmation of national letters, considering to this end the importance of literary history compendia, discourses and anthologies. At last, we outline Silvio Romero s biobibliography, including his origins, his intellectual formation, the most famous polemic, his divergent position in his intellectual production context, and we dared to bring to light new aspects related to the aforementioned author. Likewise, we intend to identify aspects in História da Literatura Brasileira in relation to elements which, according to Stuart Hall (2006) and Eric Hobsbawm (2002; 2012), establish a nation s image construct.

Firstly, we intend to analyze George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead (1968) aiming at the historical context of the film, connecting it to the atomic age’s spirit of the time and the countercultural movements of the late 1960’s. Secondly, we will conduct a detailed study on the Romerian’s model of horror – the modern representation of the zombie and its nuances. Finally, we will identify the permanence of this model nowadays and the transmutations that undergoes in new media, following the scientific and technological development. We will also consider the return of the Gothic style at the end of the millennium and the subsequent period of political and economic crisis at 21st century’s first decade, characterized by the emergence of new countercultural movements of viral propagation. Inside this context, the zombie returns once more, as a representation of the oppressed classes, at the post-industrial capitalism era.

[pt] PROBLEMATIZANDO A PRESENÇA QUE PREENCHE A AUSÊNCIA: A PRESENÇA DO NEGRO NA OBRA DE SÍLVIO ROMERO / [en] PROBLEMATIZING THE PRESENCE THAT FILLS THE ABSENCE: THE PRESENCE OF THE BLACK IN THE WORK BY SíLVIO ROMERO

ALESSANDRO LECCAS MARCAL NEVES 09 January 2023 (has links)
[en] This research intends to analyze the role of black people in the work of the intellectual Sílvio Romero. The analysis will be based in the works: A literature brasileira e a crítica moderna (1880), A história da Literatura Brasileira (1888), Martins Penna: ensaio crítico (1901) e Brasil Social e outros estudos sociológicos (2001) which the author mobilizes a racialist repertoire to think about racial composition in national identity. Believing in the existence of a gap in the understanding of how the Sergipe intellectual thinks about the black population, we will introduce this issue in a context marked by the action of the Generation of 1870, which elaborated a culture capable of renewing mentalities of that contemporaneity through the scientistic ideals characterized as being absolute truths, acting in opposition to the imperial pillars that would be represented as symbols of backwardness. To carry out this process, we divided the author intellectual action into three phases: radical criticism, balanced criticism and pessimism, choosing works that represent these phases and that bring answers to the following question: what is the role of black people in the work of Sílvio Romero?

The Land of the Savior: Óscar Romero and the Reform of Agriculture

Whelan, Matthew Philipp January 2016 (has links)

This study approaches Óscar Romero by attending to his intimate involvement in and concern for the problematic surrounding the reform of Salvadoran agriculture and the conflict over property and possession underlying it. In this study, I situate Romero in relation to the concentration of landholding and the production of landlessness in El Salvador over the course of the twentieth century, and I examine his participation in the longstanding societal and ecclesial debate about agrarian reform provoked by these realities. I try to show how close attention to agrarian reform and what was at stake in it can illumine not only the conflict that occasioned Romero’s martyrdom but the meaning of the martyrdom itself.

Understanding Romero’s involvement in the debate about agrarian reform requires sustained attention to how it takes its bearings from the line of thinking about property and possession for which Pope Leo XIII’s 1891 encyclical Rerum novarum stands as a new beginning. The enclyclical tradition developing out of Leo’s pontificate is commonly referred to as Catholic social doctrine or Catholic social teaching. Romero’s and the Church’s participation in the debate about agrarian reform in El Salvador is unintelligible apart from it.

What Romero and the encyclical tradition share, I argue, is an understanding of creation as a common gift, from which follows a distinctive construal of property and the demands of justice with respect to possessing it. On this view, property does not name, as it is often taken to mean, the enclosure of what is common for the exclusive use of its possessors—something to be held by them over and against others. Rather, property and everything related to its holding derive from the claim that creation is a gift given to human creatures in common. The acknowledgement of creation as a common gift gives rise to what I describe in this study as a politics of common use, of which agrarian reform is one expression.

In Romero’s El Salvador, those who took the truth of creation as common gift seriously—those who spoke out against or opposed the ubiquity of the concentration of land and who clamored for agrarian reform so that the landless and land-poor could have access to land to cultivate for subsistence—suffered greatly as a consequence. I argue that, among other things, their suffering shows how, under the conditions of sin and violence, those who work to ensure that others have access to what is theirs in justice often risk laying down their lives in charity. In other words, they witness to the way that God’s work to restore creation has a cruciform shape. Therefore, while the advocacy for agrarian reform begins with the understanding of creation as common gift, the testimony to this truth in word and in deed points to the telos of the gift and the common life in the crucified and risen Lord in which it participates
/ Dissertation

Celis Ingunza, Sandy Cecilia, Sánchez Romero, Nelly Johanna 07 February 2014 (has links)
Tesis

the post- 9/11 aesthetic: repositioning the zombie film in the horror genre

Green, Jr., Alan Edward 01 January 2013 (has links)
This dissertation explores a body of films produced after the events of 9/11, and while examining this specific point of departure, the author presents the argument on the vast cultural relevancy of the omnipresent zombie. These films are interrogative and complex, offering the viewing audience a rich tapestry of interwoven meanings. Furthermore, the author suggests that the zombie trope has, in fact, left the genre altogether, reinserted into a style of films he labels as "non-zombie appropriation." Chapter 1 introduces the zombie genre as both part of the larger horror genre aesthetic and as its' own legitimate subgenre. The zombie has a rich cinematic history, going back more than seven decades; heretofore, the last decade continues to see an unabated release of the viewing world's favorite creature. Chapter 2 examines 28 Days Later and the sequel 28 Weeks Later as critical films functioning as works that refocus the zombie for the twenty-first century. As no serious discussion of filmic zombies can occur without the immeasurable significance of George A. Romero, chapter 3 concentrates on the auteur reclaiming a genre he helped to invent with his films Land of the Dead and Diary of the Dead. These two works show a director that refuses to rest on his laurels by encoding these films with rich post-9/11 concerns. In chapter 4, the examination of the disparate films Equilbruim and The Happening discuss the utilization of non-zombie appropriations, films with no discernible zombies, but for all intents and purpose, imitate that specific narrative. By way of conclusion, chapter 5 continues the non-zombie trope with the abstract (and indeed postmodern) They Came Back. The chapter ends with an augmentation of the framework and with other concerns for the argument. This dissertation should be of interest to both horror scholarship overall and zombie films in particular. It aims to provide a refined reading of a significant body of works and add to the current and critical legitimization to this important style of cinematic artistry.
