A family of gods : a diachronic study of the cult of the divi/divae in the Latin West

McIntyre, Gwynaeth January 2010 (has links)
This thesis examines the establishment and development of the worship of the emperor and his family members in the Latin West, tracing specifically the cult of those who were officially deified at Rome and received the title of divus or diva. It seeks to answer three questions: 1. Does uniformity of cult practices and priestly titles increase or decrease over time 2. What prompted change in cult practice (reflected in priestly titles) and how was this change managed? 3. What factors influenced the choices made by communities throughout the Latin West concerning these cults? It addresses these questions through a number of specific case studies. It begins with a study of how the practice of deification (consecratio) was established and how it developed within the city of Rome. It then examines priestly titles associated with the cult of the divi/divae in three groups of provinces: the Gauls, the Spains, and the provinces of North Africa. Finally, it discusses the spread of the worship of the divi/divae throughout the empire by examining the Augustales (and other variations on this title) and the priests responsible for overseeing cult to individual divi/divae. The evidence discussed is primarily epigraphical but is supplemented with numismatic, archaeological and literary evidence where it is available. This thesis addresses a number of hypotheses concerning Rome’s role in the development of cult in the Latin West, principally, that cult was imposed on communities in the provinces by the centre, that the establishment of cult was based on a series of models and adopted in similar ways throughout the provinces, and that the coloniae were responsible for bringing Roman culture and religion to the peregrine communities. It argues that even though some provincial cults were established through direct intervention from members of the imperial family, it was still up to the communities themselves to oversee cult practice and finance the cult. In the case of civic cult, there is little to no evidence of involvement from the centre. Civic cult was established by local initiative and did not originate in the coloniae and spread to other communities. Instead, it tended to arise in peregrine communities (and municipia) from the earliest development of this cult (as well as some coloniae) as individual communities sought to forge a connection with the imperial family and find their place within, and in connection to, the Roman Empire.

Ontology and the new being : the relationship between creation and redemption in the theology of Paul Tillich and A.A. van Ruler

Hodnett, Garth 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (DTh)--Stellenbosch University, 2002 / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This dissertation examines the relationship of ontology and soteriology - the classic problem of nature and grace. Paul Tillich and Arnold van Ruler have been chosen as the best representatives of the classical tradition of the reformation. It is seen that although there is a significant formal difference between the theologies of these two theologians, there is a material identity. The combination of these two perspectives, Tillich's philosophical theology with Van Ruler's more traditional Calvinistic theology, helps to shed more light on the subject. The first subject to be considered is the ontological background for understanding reality as a whole. This is discussed as the trinitarian-predestinarian-eschatological framework of ontology. Everything finds its possibility in the trinitarian being of God, its reality in the eternal decrees and its purpose in the eschatological will of God. Creation has become (morally, not ontologically) separated from God in the fall and therefore salvation is needed. Christology is a function of soteriology and is to be understood in terms of substitution. This salvation, gained in Christ, is expressed in us by the outpoured Holy Spirit according to the eschatological will of God. Pneumatology is to be related to, and distinguished from christology. We are not replaced by the Spirit, but taken into a relationship with God. This is to be understood in terms of the struggle of the Spirit with the flesh. The presence of the Spirit is kerygmatic, paradoxical, anticipatory and miraculous. There is an ambiguous and fragmentary realization of salvation in the Spirit. Proto logically and eschatologically there is an identity between culture (i.e. creation and history) and the kingdom of God. But in time and space there is a duality (not a dualism). This finds expression in the duality of church and state. The state is the kernel of culture and the church is the representative of the kingdom. The state is essentially the servant of God, and insofar as it orders life it is serving God. But it is separated from God and needs the church to call it back to its proper function. Where there is the duality of church and state in a nation, there is a theocratic situation. This leads to the Bible. That is a state where the Word is proclaimed and the state, because of its essential relationship to God, can understand this proclamation. In a theocracy there is a partial union of creation and salvation. Theocracy is a Spiritual reality. It is kerygmatic and paradoxical. It is not an ideal or an ethical system imposed on life. It has a conservative character as it stands in opposition to the demonic. As the document of God's struggle with the religious nationalism oflsrael, the Old Testament provides the paradigm for a theocracy. In this sense a christianized state is an incidental repetition - mutatis mutandis - of the nation ofIsrael. Eschatologically, the particularity of salvation is completely done away with. The incarnation and the outpouring are undone. Then there is only the triune God and the naked existence of creation.

Obraz panovníka raného středověku v hagiografických pramenech / The Image of the Ruler in the Early Middle Age in Hagiographical Sources

Némethová, Marcela January 2012 (has links)
The subject of the thesis is to analyse the image of the Merovingian ruler in hagiographical sources concentrating on the period from the accession of Chlotar II. to the Frankish thrones in 613 until the fall of the dynasty in 751. While based on the texts, its task is to evaluate the nature of the Merovingian power, which underwent a process of Christianization by Church after baptism of Clovis I. The analysis reveals to what extent the inherited patristic ideas about political power were applied, and at the same time it comments on the issue of pagan and Christian sacrality. The study also deals with the relationship between royal power and ecclesiastical institutions in terms of administrative and spiritual, while referring to its important role in the change of dynasties. Key words: image of the ruler, hagiographical texts, Merovingians, pagan sacrality, Christian sacrality, cult of saints

Förster Resonance Energy Transfer from Terbium Complexes to Quantum Dots for Multiplexed Homogeneous Immunoassays and Molecular Rulers / Transfert d'énergie par résonance de type Förster entre des complexes de terbium et des boîtes quantiques pour des immunodosages et des reglettes moléculaires multiplexés

Wegner, David Karl 24 June 2015 (has links)
Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) is a non-radiative energy transfer from a donor to an acceptor in close proximity. Due to its extremely sensitive distance dependence in the 1 – 20 nm range, FRET plays an important role in nanobiotechnology. Thereby FRET can be used as signal transduction system but also for the distance estimation between donor and acceptor. The selected FRET acceptors in this work were semiconductor nanocrystals (quantum dots, QDs). This type of luminophore is well known for its superior photophysical properties. Their strong and broad absorption and their bright, narrow-band, and size-tunable photoluminescence (PL) emission make QDs ideally suited for FRET application. Combing QDs as FRET acceptors with luminescent terbium complexes (LTC) as FRET donors offers exceptionally large Förster distances of more than 10 nm. The Förster distance is characteristic of a FRET pair and is the distance at which the FRET efficiency equals 50 %. A large Förster distance is desirable as it offers the detection of biological interactions over large distances. LTC are suitable FRET donors for QDs because they provide long excited-state lifetimes in the millisecond range. This long PL decay time enables time-gated measurements for the suppression of autofluorescence and PL of directly excited QDs, which strongly increases the detection sensitivity. Additionally, the structured PL emission bands of LTCs together with the size-tunable PL emission bands of QDs make this FRET pair ideal for the application in multiplexed diagnostics, which is the measurement of multiple biomarkers in a single sample. The PhD thesis consists of two parts. In the first part the LTC-QD FRET pair was used within homogeneous FRET immunoassays for the detection of the biomarkers prostate specific antigen (TPSA), neuron-specific enolase (NSE), carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), and epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR). The immunoassay sensitivity was optimized using different types of antibodies IgG, F(ab’)2,F(ab), and for EGFR single heavy chain antibodies, which differ largely in their size. The use of small-volume serum samples and measurements on clinical as well customized fluorescence plate readers result in picomolar detection limits for all measured biomarkers. In addition to these QD-based in vitro diagnostic tests, a detailed study of the different FRET-systems using time-resolved spectroscopy was performed. The investigation revealed the influence of the different antibodies on distance, functionality, and sensitivity of the FRET immunoassays. The study was completed by the measurement of NSE and CEA in a duplexed format and real patient samples were investigated. The second part was to use FRET for nanometric distance measurements as molecular or spectroscopic ruler. Time-resolved FRET measurements enabled the calculation of the distance between donor and acceptor. Therefore two different binding strategies were investigated to establish a close proximity between the LTC-donor to the QD-acceptor, namely biotin-streptavidin recognition and polyhistidine mediated self-assembly. A detailed time-resolved study was performed of QDs with different sizes, shapes, and surface coatings in combination with LTC bound to three different host biomolecules, which also possessed different sizes, shapes, orientations, and binding conditions. The analysis of the multi-exponential decay curves of donor and acceptor allowed to obtain information about the size, shape, and biofunctionality of the investigated QD bioconjugates. The results were in agreement with other structural analysis methods, such as transmission electron microscopy (TEM) or dynamic light scattering (DLS), but with the advantage of a homogeneous measurement with three-dimensional resolution (not possible for TEM), without the inclusion of a hydration shell (drawback for DLS), and at low concentration in the same environment as used for the biological application.

Construções geométricas e origami

Bonfim, Marcelo January 2016 (has links)
Orientador: Prof. Dr. Sinuê Dayan Barbero Lodovici / Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal do ABC, Programa de Pós-Graduação em Mestrado Profissional em Matemática em Rede Nacional, 2016. / Geometry is present in many of our contemporary activities, which allows us to search for more contextualized teaching strategies in order to make the learning process more meaningful to the student. Folding square papers to create origami, seems, to some extent, something simple, seeing that since our childhood, we play folding paper, making boats, balloons or even aircrafts. However, much more than just folding randomly, Origami is based on basic geometry and without realizing it, we work with angles, planes, lines and points, enabling several ways to work with Geometry with this technique inside the classroom, in a playful and interesting way, arising the students¿ curiosity. Thus this thesis aims to present a proposal to approach in a more playful way the fundamental knowledge of Euclidean Geometry through Origami. In this work we broach two of the three classic and insolvable problems of Euclidean geometry using the ruler and the ideal compass, showing some possible elementary frames with only these two instruments. We also mention the constructability of certain numbers using the ruler and the ideal compass. Finally, we discourse about the Japanese technique of Origami, the axioms that substantiate its geometry as well as demonstrate the resolution for two of these insolvable problems: the angle trisection and the duplication of a cube.

[en] THE CALL OF JESUS TO THE RICH YOUNG RULER: AN EXEGETICAL COMMENTARY OF LC 18,18-23 / [pt] O CHAMADO DE JESUS AO RICO NOTÁVEL: COMENTÁRIO EXEGÉTICO DE LC 18,18-23

BRUNO GUIMARAES DE MIRANDA 18 August 2017 (has links)
[en] This survey sought to analyze the call of Jesus to the rich young ruler, as narrated in the Gospel according to Luke, and realize to what extent such an invite is not destinated only to the character in case, but can be extended to all those who approach Jesus recognizing in him the path to eternal life. It was concluded that the center of the call is not the accomplishment of the Commandments, and not even the distribution of the goods to the poor, but the follow of Jesus. As a consequence, this adhesion to Christ signifies the reception of eternal life as grace, and not as self achievement; besides, the one who accepts such call is incorporated to the church, the community of Jesus followers. In opposition to the frustrating hesitation of the rich young ruler, other cases of vocation and discipleship in Luke and Acts show how the acceptance of the call of Jesus was possible, and would be a source of lasting joy. The survey combined the historical-critical method with synchronic character methods, such as the rhetorical analysis.

[en] The main purpose of this work is to rescue the important concepts in geometric constructions. Concepts that are being progressively forgotten by Brazilian curriculums in schools. First, we want to present the difficulties that high school teachers might face when they will try to formalize concepts like the possibility or not to construct some figures in the Euclidean plane, especially those who have not studied advanced math courses at undergraduation. We comment on the main problems of antiquity that led mathematicians to new discoveries properties, we present geometric constructions as well as an algebraic description of these geometric constructions. The idea is that through abstract algebra we can present arguments about the possibility or impossibility of such constructions. In this work, we will comment that abstract algebra will help teachers to validate some arguments that involves the possibility or not to construct some figures as well as to enlarge high schools teachers culture, not trying to make them experts in the subject.
