(Electrical Engineering )) - Central University of Technology, Free State, 2014 / Remote rural electrification via grid-extension is a challenging solution due to high connection costs and low electricity consumption rate. As a result, it is difficult to recover the initial investment costs. Therefore, electrification is made possible by means of the commonly used off-grid approaches such as solar, wind, diesel generator and conventional micro-hydro. However, owing to non-continuous availability of sunlight and wind, high cost of diesel fuel, and requirements for construction of diversion weirs, these off-grid approaches might not offer a cost-effective and reliable solution to low income rural residents.
There are many rural communities throughout the world without access to grid electricity and with access to flowing water. An off-grid micro-hydrokinetic river (MHR) system is one of the promising technologies to be used in remote rural areas with flowing water. It can bring sustainable improvement to their quality of life due to its high energy density and minimal environmental impact. This technology is still in the development stage and there is a lack of application, especially in rural areas. Hence, this study investigates the current status of MHR technology in rural applications.
To demonstrate the economic feasibility of an off-grid MHR system, a rural site with multiple energy sources within South Africa has been used. The economic benefit offered by this proposed system at the selected site is compared to the economic benefits offered by other commonly used standalone systems such a solar, wind and diesel generator (DG). This economic comparison has been performed by making use of a Hybrid Optimization Model for Electric Renewable (HOMER) simulation tool. Grid extension has also been used as a comparison method for obtaining an economical distance between grid lines and the remote rural site. The results highlighted the acceptable economic performance of the MHR system.

Finally, most of the available modelling and simulation tools for mechanical and electrical systems are not equipped with hydrokinetic modules. Hence, an MHR system model has been developed in MATLAB/Simulink in order to study its dynamic performance as submitted to variable water resource. Its performance has then been compared to the performance of a wind system counterpart for generating the same amount of electrical power. This proved/verified that the proposed system can generate electricity markedly cheaper than a wind system even in areas with adequate wind resource within South Africa.

Energy Paths and Political Commitments: Their Roles in Environmental InequalityOng, Corinne 05 1900 (has links)
Decentralized renewable energy procurement has gained traction in recent years for its potential to alleviate rural energy poverty and environmental degradation in developing countries. Hence, this study investigates if deploying renewable energy can mitigate rural energy poverty in developing countries as often claimed. Because any energy regime cannot be initiated or sustained without the conviction of local political leaders, the study also evaluates the extent to which government investments in the development of renewable energy technologies and the energy sector, affect the environmental quality (i.e. greenhouse gas emissions) of developing countries. Energetic theory and environmental inequality constitute the key conceptual premises guiding this study. Ordinary least squares regression is utilized to analyze the relationship between key variables. The results reveal that as of 2010, use of renewable energy can indeed support rural electrification. Higher GNI per capita and use of conventional fuels are also positively related to rural electrification, all else equal. As for environmental degradation in 2005 and 2008, R&D investments actually tend to increase GHG emissions; procuring energy from either renewable or non-renewable sources is however, found to be environmentally detrimental, net of all other variables. Finally, some evidence is found for the role of aid funds and multilateral debt in abating GHG emissions.

La R.D. Congo possède l’un de taux de desserte en électricité le plus faible au monde (moins de 1 % en zones rurales) malgré son important potentiel hydroélectrique estimé à 100.000 MW. Pour accroitre le taux de desserte en électricité en construisant des microcentrales hydroélectrique, il est impérieux d’utiliser une technologie simple, fiable, robuste et peu coûteuse. La turbine à vis d’Archimède apparait comme une solution appropriée à ces exigences. Nous avons ainsi conçu et fabriqué localement (à Lubumbashi) un banc d’essai d’une turbine à vis d’Archimède possédant seulement deux hélices et des pas larges (β = 30° et β = 45°). L’objectif étant de simplifier la fabrication et réduire la quantité d’acier utilisé pour la vis par rapport aux vis utilisées en Europe et aux U.S.A. Le banc d’essais nous a permis d’obtenir six configurations combinant la pente de la vis (α = 22,5°, 30° et 37,5°) et les pas. La combinaison la plus optimale est la configuration de la vis inclinée de α = 22,5° par rapport à l’horizontale et dont l’hélice est orientée de β = 45° sur le moyeu (p45H22).<p>En second lieu, vient la configuration de la vis inclinée de α = 30° et dont l’hélice est orientée de β = 45° sur le moyeu (p45H30). Ces deux configurations ont respectivement un rendement à débit nominal de 89 et 86 %./D.R. Congo has an electricity service rate that ranks as the lowest in the world (less than 1% in rural areas) despite its large hydroelectric potential estimated at 100,000 MW. To increase the rate of access to electricity by constructing small hydropower plant, it is imperative to use simple technology, reliable, robust and inexpensive. The Archimedean screw turbine appears to be an appropriate solution to these requirements. We have designed and manufactured locally (in Lubumbashi) a test bench for Archimedean’s screw turbines having two blades only and a large pitch p function of β ( β = 30 ° and β = 45 °, β being the orientation angle of the blade on the screw cylinder). The goal is to simplify manufacturing and reduce the amount of steel used for the screw relative to the screws used in Europe or in USA. The test bench has allowed the experiments with six configurations combining the slope of the screw (α = 22.5 °, 30 ° and 37.5 °) and the pitch p (with varying rotation speed). The optimal combination appeared to be the configuration of the screw inclined at α = 22.5 ° relative to the horizon and with an helix β = 45 ° on the cylinder of the screw. The second best configuration has an inclined screw α = 30 ° and the helix which is oriented β = 45 °. Today, sub-Saharan Africa accounts for 75% of the world population without access to electricity which corresponds to over 500 million people. One strategy to reduce this number and provide access to electricity for more people, is to install mini-grids. The installment of those is currently in progress in Kenya, and this study put focus on the socio-economic benefits families’ experiences when connecting to a mini-grid. By using a literature review to get a socio-technical perspective, and a case study to investigate the situation in the rural communities of Kenya, several findings were discovered. Some benefits identified are that people felt more included in the society by getting access to information (with radio or TV), a possibility to raise the household income (by starting a business using electricity), and a more favorable study environment at home (thanks to electric lights). This, (among other findings), were visualized using personas, to represent the inhabitants in the counties of interest. Lastly, a discussion about sustainable development is included to explain what it means on a bigger scale if households are electrified. / Idag lever 75 % av världens befolkning utan tillgång till elektricitet is subsahariska Afrika, vilket motsvarar över 500 miljoner människor. En strategi för att ge fler tillgång till elektricitet är att installera så kallade mini-grids. Flera projekt där sådana installeras finns i Kenya och denna studie har som mål att undersöka de socio-ekonomiska effekter som uppkommer när familjer ute på landsbygden börjar använda dessa småskaliga energidistribueringsstationer. En litteraturstudie gjordes för att få ett socio-tekniskt perspektiv på dessa system och efter det gjordes en fallstudie för att få en uppfattning om hur situationen med elektrifiering på landsbygden ser ut just nu. Resultatet blev att vissa av de familjer som valde att ansluta sig till ett fristående elnät kände sig mer inkluderade i samhället, eftersom de nu kan få information genom radio eller TV. Dessutom har de bättre möjligheter att höja sin inkomst genom att starta ett mikro-företag tack vare elektriciteten. En ytterligare upptäckt var att de som behöver studera hemifrån får lättare att göra just det tack vare elektrisk belysning inomhus. Dessa fördelar (bland andra) visualiserades med hjälp av personas, vilket är en grupp fiktiva karaktärer som representerar invånarna i de kommuner som var inkluderade i studien. Slutligen diskuterades relationen mellan de socio-ekonomiska fördelarna och en hållbar utveckling för att sätta fingret på hur samhällen kan bli mer hållbara, om tillgång till pålitlig eldistribution finns för invånarna.

[Abstract - Conclusion]: This research study confirms the theory in the literature review on delivery of quality service to customers and premise that there is a statistically significant difference between Eskom service as perceived by rural prepaid household customers and their expectations. This study also highlights the need for Eskom management to take into cognisance the unique rural prepaid customer service needs and how to meet them, perhaps a differentiated service approach rather than a one-strategy-fits-all approach. This is in view of gaps created between expectations and perceptions of service, especially in the reliability dimension that could require a concentrated or changed performance approach to close them.

Most rural communities around the world, consider forests as the repository of stored energy. The high dependence on forests as a source of fuel wood has a major impact on vegetation because trees take a long time to regenerate to maturity, hence high dependence leads to deforestation. Fuel wood is used for household needs, such as cooking and heating and its uses contribute to the emissions of Green House Gases (GHG) such as CO2, CH4, and Black Carbon amongst others. The study assesses household energy use, the amount of carbon dioxide emitted from the combustion of fuel wood, the extent of de-vegetation and strategies to ensure sustainable energy provisions in the case study areas. Primary and secondary methods were used to collect data. The data were analysed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS 21.0), showing the frequency distribution, measures of central tendency and chi-square to determine the extent of fuel wood used in relation to electricity. The primary data were collected through personal observations, field surveys, interviews and questionnaires, while secondary data included the 2011 South Africa Census data and remote sensing images, which with the aid of GIS, were used in mapping the vegetation change.

Powering Africa by Empowering its People : An Action Research study at a Zambian microgrid company building local capacity to reach large scale viabilityAla-Mutka, Jonatan January 2019 (has links)
Despite recent advances in the global electrification rates, increasing from 76% in 1990 to 85% in 2012, the United Nations goal of universal access to electricity by 2030 is still far from achieved, with an estimated 1.1 billion people still without access to electricity. Over half of these live in Sub-Saharan Africa, with a majority in rural areas and extreme poverty. Major challenges are inert with the current electrification path of centralized grid extension, leaving these people without power in decades to come. Microgrids, a decentralized power system consisting of solar power generation, energy storage and distribution technology, has been hailed as the only option to provide life improving and productivity inducing power for rural communities in Africa. However, despite recent hype and development in the sector, the diffusion of microgrids is still incremental due to a lack of viable large-scale operation, required for profitability. This is explained by targeting customers in remote rural areas with low ability to pay, and the task of delivering expensive technology and complex operations needed to manage and operate the grids. No industry blueprint or research on how to operate microgrids at scale or profitably exists. This thesis explores one blueprint, with the promise to increase profitability and allow for a more sustainable scaling. Local Capacity building is a decentralized approach by developing capacity directly in the local communities, through recruiting, skills development and training of people to be employed to operate and manage their local microgrids. The results consist of a framework outlining what local capacity building is, through research propositions that define the key components capturing the complete system of local capacity building is for scaling a microgrid business, along with the challenges and opportunities associated with scaling a business using local capacity building. It has been developed iteratively by application of an action research approach conducted on a small-scale Zambian Microgrid company facing radical growth. The researcher was immersed in the context, at the heart of this change, and in a participatory and interventionist fashion turning every stone to explore what local capacity building is, resulting in a robust study anchored in the field. Because of the contextually embedded nature of the data, this also means that the results are local. It is up to the reader to assess the applicability of the results in another context. The extensive results span multiple areas of the business, capturing the complexity of local capacity building, and contribute to knowledge on a holistic level on what local capacity building is. This blueprint was deemed viable to further develop in the small-scale Zambian microgrid company, specifically because of its potential to lower operating expenses and offer a more sustainable way to scale, and in extension diffuse microgrids in Africa. / Trots en positiv utveckling i tillgång till el globalt, ökandes från 76% år 1990, till 85% år 2012, så är Förenta Nationernas mål om universell tillgång till el till år 2030, långt ifrån att bli uppfyllt. 1.1 miljarder människor estimeras vara utan tillgång till el globalt, där över hälften av dessa bor i Sub-Saharanska Afrika, med majoriteten levandes på landsbygden och i extrem fattigdom. Ramverket har utvecklats iterativt genom applicering av Action Research, utförd i ett småskaligt mikronät företag i Zambia som står inför en radikal expansion. Forskaren var fördjupad i företagskontexten, i hjärtat av förändringen, och på ett ingripande och deltagande sätt vänt på varenda sten för att utforska vad utveckling av lokal kapacitet är. Detta resulterade i en robust studie, förankrad i verkligheten. På grund av den kontextuellt inbäddade naturen av datan, så betyder detta även att resultaten är lokala. Det är upp till läsaren att bedöma till vilken grad resultaten kan appliceras i en annan kontext. De omfattande resultaten spänner över många olika områden i företaget, och lyckas fånga komplexiteten i vad utveckling av lokal kapacitet är. Blåkopian som utvecklades, bedömdes värdefull att utveckla vidare i företaget där studien gjorde, specifikt för dess potential att minska de operativa kostnaderna och erbjuda ett mer hållbart sätt att skala verksamheten, och i förlängningen, erbjuda ett mer hållbart sätt att sprida tillgång till el i Afrika.

Evaluation of mini-grid versus stand-alone projects: a tool for decision-making on household connections in last-mile rural electrification projectsNoguera Alonso, Irene January 2022 (has links)
Electrification of isolated rural areas in developing countries is a key action for the total eradication of energy poverty. A growing number of authors argue that this electrification should be done with distributed energy systems that combine different renewable energy sources, rather than trying to reach these communities with grid extensions. This is evidenced by numerous projects that have been carried out over the last years in different developing countries with different needs, climatic conditions and resources. These projects have very scarce resources and therefore need to be optimised. To do so, it would be very important to standardise their design, but this is very difficult as there are many variables involved. One of the most common design decisions that remains to be standardised is the question: What is the best way to bring the electricity supply to all the houses in the rural area being electrified? This Master Thesis has worked on solving this question by developing a prefeasibility tool which includes a mathematical model of the energy dispatch which minimizes the OPEX, a function which calculates the CAPEX and a final function which obtains the LCOE of the system by using the outputs of the forementioned model and tool. The tool has been implemented into the programming language Julia. Some of the parameters that need to be input to the model are the number of households, geographical distances between households, types of cables, transformers, generation technologies installed powers, among others. Besides, once the tool has been developed a series of tryouts and analysis have been carried out to confirm the robustness of the tool as well as to learn more about the behaviour of the costs structure. By carrying out the analysis of the results, the tool has successfully proven its validity. Moreover, a sensitivity analysis has been carried out to answer questions like which is the cheapest option, keeping a household isolated from the clusters or creating a stand-alone system for it? To sum up, as it has been said, this thesis has tried to answer the question settled previously with the aim of creating a useful and standard tool that could help other similar projects in their decision-making processes. / Elektrifiering av isolerade landsbygdsområden i utvecklingsländer är en nyckelåtgärd för att totalt utrota energifattigdomen. Ett växande antal författare hävdar att denna elektrifiering bör göras med distribuerade energisystem som kombinerar olika förnybara energikällor, snarare än att försöka nå dessa samhällen med nätutbyggnader. Det vittnar om ett flertal projekt som har genomförts under de senaste åren i olika utvecklingsländer med olika behov, klimatförhållanden och resurser. Dessa projekt har mycket knappa resurser och behöver därför optimeras. För att göra det skulle det vara mycket viktigt att standardisera deras design, men detta är mycket svårt eftersom det finns många variabler inblandade. Ett av de vanligaste designbesluten som återstår att standardisera är frågan: Vad är det bästa sättet att få elförsörjningen till alla hus på landsbygden som elektrifieras? Denna masteruppsats har arbetat med att lösa denna fråga genom att utveckla ett prefeasibility-verktyg som inkluderar en matematisk modell av energisändningen som minimerar OPEX, en funktion som beräknar CAPEX och en slutlig funktion som erhåller LCOE för systemet genom att använda utdata från den tidigare nämnda modellen och verktyget. Verktyget har implementerats i programmeringsspråket Julia. Några av parametrarna som behöver matas in i modellen är bland annat antalet hushåll, geografiska avstånd mellan hushållen, typer av kablar, transformatorer, genereringsteknik installerad kraft. När verktyget har utvecklats har dessutom en serie tester och analyser genomförts för att bekräfta verktygets robusthet samt för att lära sig mer om hur kostnadsstrukturen fungerar. Genom att genomföra analysen av resultaten har verktyget framgångsrikt bevisat sin giltighet. Dessutom har en känslighetsanalys genomförts för att svara på frågor som vilket år det billigaste alternativet, hålla ett hushåll isolerat från klustren eller skapa ett fristående system för det? Sammanfattningsvis, som det har sagts, har denna avhandling försökt besvara den tidigare ställda frågan i syfte att skapa ett användbart och standardverktyg som skulle kunna hjälpa andra liknande projekt i deras beslutsprocesser.

Acceso a la energía para el Desarrollo Humano Sostenible. Análisis de proyectos con Energías Renovables y modelos de gestión comunitarios en zonas ruralesLillo Rodrigo, Pau 01 September 2016 (has links)
Tesis por compendio / [EN] Energy services are crucial for eradicating poverty, improving human welfare and raising living standards. Thus, providing appropriate and reliable modern energy and sanitation services using secure and environmentally sound technologies, in conformity with socioeconomic needs and cultural values, is essential in the race for sustainable development. Autonomous systems based on the use of renewable energies (RE) have proven suitable for providing affordable, reliable, safe, and high-quality energy and sanitation services to isolated communities.
Taking this into consideration, the objectives of this thesis are to investigate the contributions of the Human and Sustainable Development (HSD) approach to the analysis of RE projects in isolated rural areas in developing countries and understand how these projects to provide access to energy in impoverished rural areas should be developed according to the paradigm of HSD.
Regarding the first objective, it is considered that, generally, these types of technology projects are designed, implemented and evaluated following strategies consistent with utilitarian approaches, focused on the generation of new resources. However, to analyze the impact of these projects on the lives of the people, in this thesis we use an approach that allows us to extend the analysis on several key dimensions of development that should be considered in the process of these projects. In particular, we have used the HSD approach, which considers that technological projects in rural areas should not only be aimed at increasing levels of access to affordable, reliable, secure and high quality energy, as well as improving the quality of the environment, including the immediate environment in homes, but also at strengthening the autonomy and empowerment of people, expanding their opportunities and freedoms.
This approach has been used in six projects to provide access to energy in Andean communities in Peru, carried out by the NGO Practical Action, which consider only RE and community management models. To analyse these projects against the precepts of HSD approach, a special methodology has been designed, incorporating tools to collect data related to the context and individual conversion factors affecting people's capabilities, with particular emphasis on the gender component.
Regarding the second objective, based on the results of the analyses, recommendations have been made to overcome barriers and difficulties identified for such projects to truly be catalysts of HSD. Additionally, a management model has been designed to handle any number of different technologies, considering the lessons learned from this research, which has been implemented in a project that includes 6 types of technologies simultaneously, and whose sustainability has proven satisfactory. / [ES] La energía es crucial para erradicar la pobreza, mejorar el bienestar y aumentar los estándares de vida de las personas. En este sentido, para lograr procesos de desarrollo es esencial dotar a la población de modernos servicios básicos energéticos, adecuados y fiables, utilizando tecnologías seguras y ecológicamente racionales, de conformidad con las necesidades socioeconómicas y los valores culturales. Para ello, los sistemas autónomos basados en el uso de las energías renovables (EERR) han demostrado ser adecuados para proporcionar servicios de energía y saneamiento en comunidades rurales aisladas.
Tomando esto en consideración, los objetivos de esta tesis son investigar los aportes del enfoque de Desarrollo Humano Sostenible (DHS) al análisis de proyectos de EERR en zonas rurales aisladas de países en vías de desarrollo y entender cómo se deben desarrollar proyectos de EERR para el acceso a la energía en zonas rurales empobrecidas de acuerdo con el paradigma de DHS.
En relación al primer objetivo, cabe considerar que, generalmente, este tipo de proyectos tecnológicos se han diseñado, implementado y evaluado siguiendo estrategias acordes con enfoques de cariz utilitarista, centrados en la generación de nuevos recursos. En cambio, para analizar el impacto de este tipo de proyectos en la vida de la personas, en esta tesis se promueve el uso de un enfoque que nos permita ampliar el análisis sobre varias dimensiones clave del desarrollo que deben ser consideradas en el proceso de estos proyectos. En particular, se ha utilizado el enfoque de DHS, según el cual los proyectos tecnológicos en las zonas rurales no sólo deben estar dirigidos a aumentar los niveles de acceso a una energía asequible, fiable, segura y de alta calidad, y a mejorar la calidad del medio ambiente, incluido el entorno inmediato en los hogares, sino también a fortalecer la autonomía y el empoderamiento de las personas, ampliando sus oportunidades y libertades.
Este enfoque ha sido empleado en seis estudios de proyectos de acceso a la energía en comunidades rurales andinas del Perú, llevados a cabo por la ONG Practical Action, los cuales cuentan íntegramente con EERR y modelos de gestión comunitarios. Para realizar el análisis de estos proyectos en base a los preceptos del DHS se ha diseñado una metodología ad hoc, incorporando herramientas para obtener datos relativos al contexto y a los factores de conversión individual que afectan a las capacidades de las personas, haciendo especial hincapié a la componente de género.
En relación al segundo objetivo, en base a los resultados de los análisis realizados, se han presentado una serie de recomendaciones con las que se pueden superar las barreras y dificultades identificadas para que este tipo de proyectos sean verdaderamente catalizadores del DHS. Además, se ha diseñado un modelo de gestión capaz de gestionar cualquier número de tecnologías distintas, considerando los aprendizajes adquiridos en las investigaciones anteriores, el cual ha sido puesto en práctica en un proyecto que incorpora 6 tipos de tecnologías simultáneamente, y cuya sostenibilidad ha demostrado ser satisfactoria. / [CA] L'energia és crucial per a eradicar la pobresa, millorar el benestar i augmentar els estàndards de vida de les persones. En aquest sentit, dotar la població de moderns serveis bàsics energètics, adequats i fiables, utilitzant tecnologies segures i ecològicament racionals, de conformitat amb les necessitats socioeconòmiques i els valors culturals, és essencial per aconseguir processos de desenvolupament. Per a això, els sistemes autònoms basats en l'ús de les energies renovables (EERR) han demostrat ser adequats per proporcionar serveis d'energia i sanejament en comunitats rurals aïllades.
Prenent això en consideració, els objectius d'aquesta tesi són investigar les aportacions de l'enfocament de Desenvolupament Humà Sostenible (DHS) a l'anàlisi de projectes d'EERR en zones rurals aïllades de països en vies de desenvolupament i entendre com s'han de desenvolupar projectes d'EERR per a l'accés a l'energia en zones rurals empobrides d'acord amb el paradigma de DHS.
En relació al primer objectiu, cal considerar que, generalment, aquest tipus de projectes tecnològics s'han dissenyat, implementat i avaluat seguint estratègies acords amb enfocaments de caire utilitarista, centrats en la generació de nous recursos. En canvi, per analitzar l'impacte d'aquest tipus de projectes en la vida de les persones, en aquesta tesi es promou l'ús d'un enfocament que ens permeta ampliar l'anàlisi sobre diverses dimensions clau del desenvolupament que han de ser considerades en el procés d'aquests projectes. En particular, s'ha utilitzat l'enfocament de DHS, segons el qual els projectes tecnològics a les zones rurals no només han d'estar dirigits a augmentar els nivells d'accés a una energia assequible, fiable, segura i d'alta qualitat, i a millorar la qualitat del medi ambient, inclòs l'entorn immediat a les llars, sinó també a enfortir l'autonomia i l'empoderament de les persones, ampliant les seves oportunitats i llibertats.
Aquest enfocament ha estat emprat en sis estudis de projectes d'accés a l'energia en comunitats rurals andines del Perú, portats a terme per l'ONG Practical Action, els quals compten íntegrament amb EERR i models de gestió comunitaris. Per realitzar l'anàlisi d'aquests projectes en base als preceptes del DHS s'ha dissenyat una metodologia ad hoc, incorporant eines per obtenir dades relatives al context i als factors de conversió individual que afecten les capacitats de les persones, fent especial èmfasi a la component de gènere.
En relació al segon objectiu, en base als resultats de les anàlisis realitzades, s'han presentat un seguit de recomanacions amb les que es poden superar les barreres i dificultats identificades perquè aquest tipus de projectes siguen veritablement catalitzadors del DHS. A més, s'ha dissenyat un model de gestió capaç de gestionar qualsevol nombre de tecnologies diferents, considerant els aprenentatges adquirits en les investigacions anteriors, el qual ha estat posat en pràctica en un projecte que incorpora 6 tipus de tecnologies simultàniament, i la sostenibilitat del qual ha demostrat ser satisfactòria. / Lillo Rodrigo, P.
