The aim of this paper is to examine how Tanums kommuns website's global navigation menu, local menu and search engine can get better and how to improve them. I have chosen to use usability testing, surveys and research about similar products in order to find out how this can be done. I have found that the website has problems with not getting results when searching in a specific way. I have also found, among other things, that users don't find it logical to find certain information at some places and also that the labeling of certain elements in the menu needs improvement. A few of my suggestions were to help the user by suggesting different ways to search, that there is a way to filter the search, that the labeling of the menu elements were looked through and that information were put where users finds it logical. I also suggested that a bigger usability test could be carried out before or after some changes to the website was done.

The purpose of this paper has been to identify which modern search functions user of Smartphones are using, why just these functions are being used, and how they have affected the way users acquire information. Modern search functions in this paper means searches that are not based on text, i.e. ways to search for information by other means than writing something into a search field. To identify this, two studies were conducted, one with a questionnaire being distributed with the help of Google Docs through social networks, and one with four interviews with users of modern search functions for Smartphones. The study showed that even though 76 % of Smartphone users are aware of at least one modern search function, only 29% uses one on a regular basis. The reason that modern search functions are not more widespread is that they are not sufficiently developed yet, and serious usage is still in the future. Because of this no major impact on search behavior can yet be found.

Cardiolex Medical AB är ett medicintekniskt företag som säljer ett komplett EKG-hanterings system med tillhörande vakuumsystem. Produkten EC View med lagring i EC Store är idag de produkter som Cardiolex säljer till sina kunder för att kunna lagra och hantera EKG-undersökningar på sjukhus och vårdcentraler. Cardiolex önskade utöka EC View med fler sökfunktioner för användning i forskningssyfte. Parametermaterial har länge funnits, men hanteringen har varit manuell, vilket varit tidsineffektivt. Intresset av att kunna sortera ut specifika EKG-undersökningar efter enskilda mätvärden är stort och därmed är en utökad sökfunktion viktig att ha med i ny mjukvara. För att få en djupare inblick i vilka av de vanligaste mätvärdena är, studerades artiklar för att kunna fastställa att den sökfunktion som implementerades var ett användbart tillägg i befintlig produkt. Det mätvärde som ansågs mest attraktivt att skapa en sökfunktion för var ST-amplituden. Funktionen som plockar ut detta värde ur ett lagrat EKG är skapad i Visual Studio, med programspråket T-SQL, där funktionen anropas i en SQL-vy som sammanställer all information för användaren. Fördelen med att använda sig av en SQL-vy presentation är också att information kan sammanställas undertiden en sökning genomförs. / Cardiolex Medical AB has an ambition that ECG should be easy to use, they sell ECG systems compatible with all types of electrodes and has special knowledge in ECG modulation. Today Cardiolex has three products to manage ECG examinations and patient information with EC view and EC Store. Their ECG system is operating with EC Sense and together with EC View and EC Store, Cardiolex offer a complete solution available to use with many softwares and systems at the market. With EC Store, examinations can be saved and found in the database and EC View is a client for reviewing and making medical assessments. Moreover, Cardiolex has a vision to offer a wider functionality for researchers, who research in ECG. Therefore, an extended search tool was important for future functionality in the products. To get a better insight in which of the ECG measurements was of interest to implement in a search function, a literature study of today’s recherche is summarised in this project. The ST-value was considered one of the most common parameters, therefore this parameter was decided to be implemented in the search function. The function which return a ST-amplitude value stored in the examination, was created in Visual Studios, with the language SQL. The data from the function became represented of a SQL-view which can sort data during a searching process in the database.

I detta arbete undersöks hur man konstruerar en sökfunktion och hur sökresultatvisningen görs på bästa sätt. Sökfunktionen är oftast en central del på en webbsida idag och fyller en viktig roll för om en webbsida skall bli framgångsrik eller inte. Om informationen inte går att hitta på ett enkelt sätt kan webbsidan tappa sina användare ganska snabbt. Även presentationen av sökresultaten kan vara en vital del där logik, design och layout är viktiga aspekter som inte får förbises. Det finns således en hel del faktorer att ta hänsyn till som webbutvecklare. Rapporten går igenom några utvalda best-practice metoder från områden som layout, sökfält, sökresultat och paginering med syftet att identifiera viktiga och användbara metoder. En analys av 10 webbsidor samt en enkätundersökning genomfördes för att undersöka om metoderna tillämpades i verkligheten samt om det var metoder som användare efterfrågar. Arbetet resulterade i en sammanställning av viktiga faktorer som rekommenderas vid konstruktion av en användarvänlig sökfunktion och presentation av sökresultat.

For a mobile application with focus on search functionality to be able to run smoothly, it is important to provide relevant search result based on user input. This report is to investigate how to implement a search function, to provide appropriate answers. The project consists of developing a recipe application with basic functions. The focus will be towards the search algorithm, how it will be designed. To find out what users consider is relevant, a study is done with 88 participants. The results of the survey were evaluated, and remained as an underlay for what should be searchable and how to implement the search function. Creating a good search function proved to consumes a lot of time and resources. The mobile application was completed with the desired functionality, which was provided from the survey. / För att en mobilapplikation med fokus på sökfunktionalitet ska fungera väl, är det viktigt att sökfunktionen ger relevanta resultat baserat på användarens sökningar. Den här rapporten har i syfte att undersöka sökfunktionen kan implementeras för att ge relevant svar. Projektet består av att utveckla en receptapplikation med grundläggande funktionalitet, där fokus är hur sökalgoritmen ska utformas. För att ta reda på vad användare anser relevant har en undersökning gjorts med 88 deltagare. Resultatet av undersökning har utvärderats och legat som underlag för vad som ska vara sökbart samt hur denna sökfunktion bör implementeras. Att skapa en bra sökfunktion visade sig vara både resurs- och tidskrävande. Mobilapplikationen färdigställdes med önskad funktionalitet, där sökningsalternativen är baserade på vad undersökningen visade.
