Untersuchung des Wuchsverhaltens von Kiefern (Pinus sylvestris L.) auf Extremstandorten im Nationalpark "Sächsische Schweiz" / Analysis of Growth of Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) on Extreme Sites in the Saxon Switzerland National Park

Schildbach, Marek 26 May 2010 (has links) (PDF)

Prediction of wood species and pulp brightness from roundwood measurements

Nilsson, David January 2005 (has links)
This thesis presents a number of studies, where a multivariate approach was taken to construct models that predict wood species and thermo mechanical pulp brightness from roundwood of Norway spruce and Scots pine. The first and second studies produced multivariate prediction models for wood species from the bark of spruce and pine. These models can be used for wood species classification and would replace the manual log assessment that takes place today. Principal Component Analysis, PCA, and Partial least squares projections to Latent Structures, PLS, were used to predict the wood species from multivariate measurements recorded from the bark of spruce and pine. Two different kinds of measurements were employed, near-infrared spectroscopy and digital imaging. Both methods showed that it was possible to predict the wood species with a high accuracy. The third and fourth studies of the thesis are related to the wood storage of roundwood and the deterioration of wood that occurs during the storage. The third study used an experimental design with five storage factors that provided different conditions for the analysed wood. The experimental design made it possible to identify the factors and the interaction between factors, which were important for the ISO brightness of peroxide and dithionite bleached thermo mechanical pulp, TMP. The final study of the thesis used NIR spectroscopy for predicting the ISO brightness of bleached TMP. Spectra recorded from stored wood were used to construct PLS prediction models.

Trees are considered one of the most sensitive indicators of the environmental condition from all life forms. They are most suitable for the evaluation of the environmental changes. Due to the structure of crown trees have better contact with the atmosphere, so they filter the flowing air mass better than other vegetation forms, determine the processes in the ecosphere and react sensitively to the anthropogenic factors and consequently indicate the condition of the forest ecosystems by anatomical and morphological symptoms. Tree rings, their width and structure integrally reflect the complex impact of environmental factors. Therefore the role of tree rings, as the indicator of environmental conditions, is important for the evaluation of environmental changes. Forest ecosystems growing close to the pollution sources suffer the greatest impact because the concentration of harmful materials in the local pollution zone often exceeds permissible amounts. The objective of the research was to analyse the changes of annual radial increment of pine stands (Pinus sylvestris L.) in the zones of local alkalizing, acidifying and eutrophying pollution and to determine the regularities of radial increment recovery after the decrease of pollution. First time in Lithuania a comprehensive dendrochronological research on the impact of climatic factors and industrial pollution on the radial increment of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) has been carried out in the surroundings of “Akmenės... Išanalizuotas paprastosios pušies Labanoro provenencijos sodmenų vystymosi ir adaptyvumo ypatumai lauko daigyne ir želdiniuose. Įvertinta atskirų daigyno substratų (pušyno, ąžuolyno pakločių) įtaka sėjinukų (2+0) vystymuisi, adaptyvumui ir mikorizės išplitimui. Nustatyti minėtos provenencijos sodinukų (2+1) reakcijos į naujas augimo sąlygas atskirose želdavietėse (poligone, miško kirtavietėje, žemės ūkio naudmenose) ypatumai. Pateikti mikorizės kiekybinės ir kokybinės sudėties skirtumai atskiruose daigyno substratuose ir tirtose želdavietėse. Palygintos tradiciniu (morfotipavimo) ir molekuliniais (PCR-RFLP, sekvenavimas) metodais nustatytos mikorizės grybų rūšys. / The study from the research “The mycorrhizal morphotypes of Scots pine seedlings in response to different site” amounts to 52 pages, 10 tables, 26 figures and 72 refrences. The peculiarities of development and adaptivity of Scots pine seedlings from Labanoras provenance in bare-roots nursery and different site were analyzed. We hypothesized that soil with forest litter amendment would affect ectomycorrhizal community structure and growth and productivity characteristics of Scots pine seedlings in bare-roots nursery and in response to different site. In our experimental system, a layer of pine or oak litter was placed on the surface of the nursery bed soil in order to mimic natural litter cover. The influence of different nursery substrata (oak and pine litter) on development, adaptivity and mycorrhizal spread of seedlings (2+0) has been assessed. The peculiarities of seedlings (2+1) of mentioned provenance in response to new growth conditions in different site were found. The differences of qualitative and quantitative composition in nursery substrata and different site were investigated. Mycorrhizal fungi species were assessed by morphotyping and molecular methods (PCR-RFLP, sequence) identification. We have preliminary evidenced that changes to the supply of organic matter through litter manipulation may have wide-reaching effects on soil physical properties and soil chemistry and thus influence growth and survival Scots pine seedlings and their mycorrhizal communities... Scots' attitudes to Britain and to the European Union : the psychology of national segregation and supra-national integration

Sindic, Denis January 2005 (has links)
This thesis is concerned with attitudes towards supra-national bodies, and more specifically with Scots' attitudes towards union in Britain and Europe. Firstly, it is suggested that support for, or opposition, to integration in a supra-national body depends on the extent to which this body is believed to enhance or undermine the ability to express national identity {identity enhancement vs. identity undermining). Identity undermining, in turn, depends upon a combined sense of incompatibility with outgroup identities/interests and of ingroup powerlessness within the supranational body. Secondly, it is suggested that these features of the social context and of identity meanings can be actively constructed in order to fulfil strategic purposes, such as persuading audiences in favour of separatism or integration. Five studies are reported which investigated these hypotheses. In study 1, we looked at the discourses of Scottish politicians and at the way their accounts of group identities and social reality could be understood in strategic terms, i.e. in relation to their political projects regarding Scotland's status in Britain and in Europe. In the second study, a survey design was used in order to provide quantitative evidence of the relationship between identity undermining, incompatibility, powerlessness and separatism. The third (experimental) study sought to clarify the causal relationship between these variables and showed that manipulating identity undermining lead to increased support for separatism. Finally, the fourth and the fifth (experimental) studies suggested that identity constructions, in the form of judgements of group prototypicality, can vary as a function of the strategic claim made by participants. In conclusion, the merits are stressed of an approach to identity processes and attitudes towards supra-national bodies that is sensitive to both context and content. It is also stressed that context and contents should not be taken as perceptual givens but as actively constructed by social actors.
