"PPB: origem e trajetória de um partido de direita no Brasil" / BPP: origin and trajectory of a right political party in BrazilAlmeida, Ludmila Chaves 12 April 2005 (has links)
This dissertation analyses the trajectory of the Brazilian Progressive Party (recently renamed of Progressive Party - PP), since its creation during the military regimen under the denomination of ARENA (Renovadora National Alliance). The work investigates the electoral performance and the strategies developed by the party to survive under a democratic and multiparty environment. Having been born within of the State, BPP faced many difficulties to survive after the end of the authoritarian regime. After having developed a large and decentralized struture, this party have changed into: a centralized and small organization. Although having lost most of its influence, the BPP has kept its position among the largest parties concentrating about 10% of the elected offices in the country. The work also examines the BPP´s members of the houses of representatives, analysing their positioning regarding important issues of Brazilian policy.

Utveckling av mobiltelefonapplikation för kommunikation i ad-hoc nätverk med BluetoothteknikSimberg, Gustav, Viggeborn, Björn January 2005 (has links)
<p>The purpose of this thesis is to develop an application for mobile phones that simplifies communication. The company Doberman wanted to look at possibilities to develop such an application that uses Bluetooth™ technol-ogy to communicate in ad-hoc networks. The aim has been an application to run on mobile phones in which you can send messages and files to other devices and also add a user profile with personal information to share with others. The communication will take place in temporary networks created when Bluetooth enabled devices is in range of each other.</p><p>The market for mobile phones has grown rapidly over the past years and is still growing. There are many differ-ent phone models and it is difficult to find a developer platform that covers many phone models. In the beginning of this thesis an inquiry of different developer platforms has been made. The Java™ platform is supported by most phones but has limitations in accessing functions on the device. The best alternative was Symbian C++ for devices with Symbian OS. This alternative does not have the same limitations as Java and is still supported by relatively many devices. The application was then developed in Symbian C++. There are a number of different versions of Symbian OS and different GUI-platforms that runs on Symbian OS which leads to other issues in the development. We have limited the development of the application to the Series 60 platform for Symbian OS v7.0s. During design and implementation portability to other GUI-platforms has been considered.</p><p>We have tested the application on emulator compatible with Symbian OS v7.0s and Symbian OS v8.0a and found some compatibility problems between the two versions. We have also tested the application on mobile phones and between emulator and the phone with corresponding OS-version no new problems occurred</p>

Behavioral Measures and their Correlation with IPM Iteration Counts on Semi-Definite Programming ProblemsFreund, Robert M., Ordóñez, Fernando, Toh, Kim Chuan 04 March 2005 (has links)
We study four measures of problem instance behavior that might account for the observed differences in interior-point method (IPM) iterations when these methods are used to solve semidefinite programming (SDP) problem instances: (i) an aggregate geometry measure related to the primal and dual feasible regions (aspect ratios) and norms of the optimal solutions, (ii) the (Renegar-) condition measure C(d) of the data instance, (iii) a measure of the near-absence of strict complementarity of the optimal solution, and (iv) the level of degeneracy of the optimal solution. We compute these measures for the SDPLIB suite problem instances and measure the correlation between these measures and IPM iteration counts (solved using the software SDPT3) when the measures have finite values. Our conclusions are roughly as follows: the aggregate geometry measure is highly correlated with IPM iterations (CORR = 0.896), and is a very good predictor of IPM iterations, particularly for problem instances with solutions of small norm and aspect ratio. The condition measure C(d) is also correlated with IPM iterations, but less so than the aggregate geometry measure (CORR = 0.630). The near-absence of strict complementarity is weakly correlated with IPM iterations (CORR = 0.423). The level of degeneracy of the optimal solution is essentially uncorrelated with IPM iterations.

Robust Beamforming for Two-Way Relay SystemsAziz, Ahsan 16 December 2013 (has links)
In wireless communication systems, relays are widely used to extend coverage. Over the past years, relays have evolved from simple repeaters to more sophisticated units that perform signal processing to improve signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) or throughput (or both) at the destination receiver. There are various types of relays such as amplify and forward (AF), decode and forward (DF), and compress and forward (CF) (or estimate and forward (EF)) relays. In addition, recently there has been a growing interest in two-way relays (TWR). By utilizing the concept of analog network coding (ANC), TWRs can improve the throughput of a wireless sys- tem by reducing the number of time slots needed to complete a bi-directional message exchange between two destination nodes. It’s well known that the performance of a TWR system greatly depends on its ability to apply signal processing techniques to effectively mitigate the self-interference and noise accumulation, thereby improving the SINR. We study a TWR system that is equipped with multiple antennas at the relay node and a single antenna at the two destination nodes. Different from traditional work on TWR, we focus on the case with imperfect knowledge of channel state information (CSI).
For such a TWR, we formulate a robust optimization problem that takes into ac- count norm-bounded estimation errors in CSI and designs an optimal beamforming matrix. Realizing the fact that this problem is extremely hard to solve globally, we derive two different methods to obtain either optimal or efficient suboptimal beam- forming matrix solutions. The first method involves solving the robust optimization problem using the S-procedure and semidefinite programming (SDP) with rank-one relaxation. This method provides an optimal solution when the rank-one relaxation condition for the SDP is satisfied. In cases where the rank-one condition cannot be satisfied, it’s necessary to resort to sub-optimal techniques. The second approach presented here reformulates the robust non-convex quadratically constrained quadratic programming (QCQP) into a robust linear programming (LP) problem by using first-order perturbation of the optimal non-robust beamforming solution (which assumes no channel estimation error). Finally, we view the TWR robust beamforming problem from a practical standpoint and develop a set of iterative algorithms based on Newton’s method or the steepest descent method that are practical for hardware implementation.

Optimal energy management strategy for a fuel cell hybrid electric vehicleFletcher, Thomas P. January 2017 (has links)
The Energy Management Strategy (EMS) has a huge effect on the performance of any hybrid vehicle because it determines the operating point of almost every component associated with the powertrain. This means that its optimisation is an incredibly complex task which must consider a number of objectives including the fuel consumption, drive-ability, component degradation and straight-line performance. The EMS is of particular importance for Fuel Cell Hybrid Electric Vehicles (FCHEVs), not only to minimise the fuel consumption, but also to reduce the electrical stress on the fuel cell and maximise its useful lifetime. This is because the durability and cost of the fuel cell stack is one of the major obstacles preventing FCHEVs from being competitive with conventional vehicles. In this work, a novel EMS is developed, specifcally for Fuel Cell Hybrid Electric Vehicles (FCHEVs), which considers not only the fuel consumption, but also the degradation of the fuel cell in order to optimise the overall running cost of the vehicle. This work is believed to be the first of its kind to quantify effect of decisions made by the EMS on the fuel cell degradation, inclusive of multiple causes of voltage degradation. The performance of this new strategy is compared in simulation to a recent strategy from the literature designed solely to optimise the fuel consumption. It is found that the inclusion of the degradation metrics results in a 20% increase in fuel cell lifetime for only a 3.7% increase in the fuel consumption, meaning that the overall running cost is reduced by 9%. In addition to direct implementation on board a vehicle, this technique for optimising the degradation alongside the fuel consumption also allows alternative vehicle designs to be compared in an unbiased way. In order to demonstrate this, the novel optimisation technique is subsequently used to compare alternative system designs in order to identify the optimal economic sizing of the fuel cell and battery pack. It is found that the overall running cost can be minimised by using the smallest possible fuel cell stack that will satisfy the average power requirement of the duty cycle, and by using an oversized battery pack to maximise the fuel cell effciency and minimise the transient loading on the stack. This research was undertaken at Loughborough University as part of the Doctoral Training Centre (DTC) in Hydrogen, Fuel Cells and Their Applications in collaboration with the University of Birmingham and Nottingham University and with sponsorship from HORIBA-MIRA (Nuneaton, UK). A Microcab H4 test vehicle has been made available for use in testing for this research which was previously used for approximately 2 years at the University of Birmingham. The Microcab H4 is a small campus based vehicle designed for passenger transport and mail delivery at low speeds as seen on a university campus. It has a top speed of approximately 30mph, and is fitted with a 1.2kW fuel cell and a 2kWh battery pack.

Sporting lives and "development" agendas : a critical analysis of sport and "development" nexus in the context of farm workers of the Western CapeKaur, Tarminder January 2016 (has links)
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD / This thesis is about the sporting lives of people who work and/or live at the
commercial grape and wine farms of the Western Cape. Collectively referred to as
farm workers, they are identified by the Western Cape Provincial Government as
a priority group in need of "development". Over the past 15 or so years,
proclamations and practices of "sport for development and peace" (SDP) have
emerged as globally recognised phenomena, where sport is promoted as a tool to
achieve a broad range of "development" objectives, including the Millennium
Development Goals. As a research topic, SDP scholars examine the practical and
theoretical usefulness of sport as a tool for addressing a diverse set of social,
health, political and economic issues through education, diplomacy, inclusion, and
awareness programmes. Instead of attending to the questions of whether or how
sport might serve "development" ends, this study offers a critical analysis of the
nexus between sport and "development" (SDN) in the context of farm workers of
the Western Cape. Informed by James Ferguson‘s analysis of "development" as an 'anti-politics machine' (1990), I adopt a deconstructionist approach that examines issues beyond the narrow confines of "development" problems and programmes. As he argues, "development" continues to serve as a-central organising concept‘ to
discuss and assess desired change in social and economic realms, which is evident
in the programmes of farm worker "development" and how these continue to retain a place in the policy and political discourses on agrarian transformation in
post-apartheid South Africa. With an appreciation of the Western Cape‘s agrarian
history and politics and how they shape present-day farm labour conditions, I
have critically analysed the discourses and practices of farm worker
"development" and SDP in the light of broader structural realities, everyday
sporting lives and the "development" experiences of farm workers. The central
organising question of this thesis is: how do "development" problems and the
solutions sought for in SDP discourses and programmes correspond to the social,
economic and political realities of their subjects? Drawing on my ethnographic fieldwork conducted at farmlands in and around Rawsonville, a small rural town, from April 2012 to May 2013, I illustrate different and seemingly disconnected frames and positions from which theories of SDP and farm workers‘ experiences of sport and "development" were observed. The analysis is organised around three contrasting frames of observation, namely: 1) historical and contemporary discourses and politics of farm worker "development" and SDP programmes and practices, 2) structural arrangements of competitive and physical infrastructure for official sport, and 3) everyday (official and unofficial) sporting practices and experiences of the rural working class people. With a particular attention to continuities and contradictions in historical and contemporary farm worker "development" discourses and selected SDP case studies, I demonstrate that while SDP agendas directed at farm workers may serve divergent and at times conflicting interests, farm workers' own agency, initiative and aspirations do not feature in SDP programmes and broader "development" discourses. The contrasts and counter-narratives presented in discussing these case studies and stories complicate and contest simplified notions commonly projected in global SDP discourses and locally specific "development" agendas. Beyond the confines of sporadic and temporary SDP projects, there was a vibrant and active world of formal and informal sport among the farm workers of Rawsonville. By focusing on the everyday sporting lives of athletes, coaches, managers, organisers and soccer clubs, I paint a picture that reveals the diversity and inconsistency of experiences and meanings of farm worker as an identity, a class position and an occupation. Interrogating how farm workers were embedded within the broader rural sport structures, I describe the complex set of factors that shaped their experiences of, access to, and participation in, sport. I argue that while sport was passionately pursued irrespective of direct or corollary "development" benefits, it was unofficial and under-the-radar sport networks and practices that served as vital spaces of autonomy, initiative and self-realization, even for those who may not otherwise have had such opportunities. And while the politically disengaged and enthusiastically embraced qualities of sport may continue to be among the reasons for its traction in "development" and peace agendas, these very same qualities allow sport to be usefully employed as an ethnographic method. Among the formative turns I took in conducting and presenting my research observations was to implicate myself and invite the reader into the confusing and complex process of learning and knowledge production. By way of conclusion, I argue for refocusing the gaze of research on studying sport as part of the broader scope of subaltern sociality.
