Should older adults be encouraged to get online? the intersection of internet use and social inclusion

Elliott, Melina 14 January 2016 (has links)
Does the Internet really improve the lives of older adults? The literature around information and communication technology would suggest that use of the Internet can help to promote social inclusion but is this the case for older adults? The aim of this study was to understand the relationship older adults have with the Internet. In-depth qualitative interviews were conducted with a purposive sample of 15 participants aged 70 to 90 in Fall 2014 to explore the perceived benefits and barriers older adults experience with regards to Internet use. The Internet was found to plays an important role in the lives of older adults who use it. Light Internet users were the group most dissatisfied with their Internet abilities. Light users and non-users both expressed feeling left out due to their perceived lack of abilities. Non-users had no intention of learning to use the Internet despite having access to potential support, whereas light Internet users indicated feelings of frustration around perceived lack of support. Users and non-users discussed feelings of concern and suspicions related to the Internet and their ability to access the resource. Medium and avid users stated that the Internet played an important role in their lives and that they would be lost without it. This research explores the lived experience of older adults and the Internet, offering a better understanding of how the Internet impacts their lives and ability to maintain social inclusion. This research can inform policy around promoting the use of the Internet among older adults and whether it is necessary to focus efforts on bridging the digital divide. / February 2016

Zavádění standardů kvality péče v domově důchodců / Standards of Quality - Implementation and Development in Houses for Seniors

GERSDORFOVÁ, Zlatuše January 2007 (has links)
Basic principles and content of quality standards of social services are described in the law 108/2006, about social services, and in related notice 505/2006. There are described the most important principles and obligations to provide social services by providers. Quality standards are a tool to achieve required level of services. They are also used as control mechanism for all of providers. These standards were released in 2002 and they started process of transformation some organizations. For this transformation are important a will of service provider and appropriate ammount of money to manage required changes. The quality standards are uniform tool for all of kinds of social services. It means to revise all of internal regulations of providing organizations. It means also to make emploees do along the new system. In the senior house in Sušice there was worked allong with these standards since the new legislation came into force. As a method were chosen conducted talks with clients and questionnaire for emploees. Althrow most of the clients are in serious health condition, they need care and help by personnel during whole day, conclusions in case of care were positive. All of the clients are satisfied with accomodation. Interesting is also the time of living there, 27% of the clients live there more than 6 years. With sanitary care were satisfied 90% of clients. Satisfaction of the clients with providing care means, that implementation of quality standards increases level of provided care. Questionnaire for emploees proves, that very important matter is to move people´s mind and to remove old stereotypes of work. Not all of emploees are working with aim to provide help to the clients. There is large space for a work with current staff and in the field of option of new workers. Relationships between emploees in working process are not good. I thing, it is a legacy of the past. I would like to say, that it is a matter of each emploee to build relationships in organization. New principles and quality of work, it means to develop education and knowliges of each emploee. Questionaires, which were collected, syllabus of talks with the clients and obtained conclusions will be used to improve the work in the field of social services.

Sociální rehabilitace v Domově pro seniory Máj v Českých Budějovicích, p. o. / Social Rehabilitation in the Nursing Home called Máj in České Budějovice,p.o.

HANČLOVÁ, Svatava January 2012 (has links)
A social rehabilitation in the Seniors´ Home Máj in České Budějovice A social rehabilitation is a complex of activities encouraging an independence, self-sufficiency and social integration of clients of the Seniors´ Home. An aim of the thesis is to evaluate a progress of the social rehabilitation in the Seniors´ Home Máj in České Budějovice. A qualitative research was carried out to achieve objectives of the thesis. Five clients were chosen in order to determine a subjective evaluation of the social rehabilitation. Semi-standardized interviews were conducted with them. An observation method was applied at their engaging in activities in the Seniors´ Home as well as at seniors outside this facility, and a method of document analysis. Obtained information has been contained in case studies and they were analysed by using a grounded theory. Semi-standardized interviews were also conducted to find out attitudes of the professional staff and managers to the social rehabilitation. Factors affecting clients´ social functioning were also monitored in a course of the observation. Information from the interviews with the staff and the observation were again analysed through a method of the grounded theory. The thesis confirms findings of similarly oriented researches. It shows that the course of the social rehabilitation is influenced by institutional, personal and economic influences. The effect of applied methods and techniques of the social rehabilitation depends on an approach of the staff as well as clients and a quality of the clients´ social relations. The research has proven that an integration of clients in the facility as well as outside is supported by a wide offer of leisure time activities. Even if the clients in the Seniors´ Home have enough opportunities for mutual meetings, they are not usually successful in establishing a fully-fledged friendship and they often feel lonely. Although there is encouraged self-sufficiency per clients´ individual needs in the Seniors´ Home Máj, therapeutic activities are conducted and clients participate in physical activities, their level of self-sufficiency reduces. Results of the diploma thesis are stimulating for the staff of the Seniors´ Home Máj as well as for other social service founders and providers.

One of the implications of declining fertility and mortality is population aging, a process that has been taking place in several countries, although in different pace and time. Later, due to better living conditions in general, among other factors, life expectancy was extended and the trend is continuing increase exceeding the forecasts of experts. Although these improvements are evident for decades contributing to the prolongation of life, even with disabilities, the structure and functioning of health systems did not accompany these changes. This study aims to describe the process of population aging in Brazil, and to identify some of the challenges already established, especially regarding the inclusion of the elderly in society, as well as the elderly in the family context. Sexualidade do Idoso: uma revisão sistemática da literatura / The Sexuality of the elderly: a systematic review of literatura

Mariana Paula de Souza 23 May 2014 (has links)
Old age is a stage of life, which is extremely significant, deserving special attention and care, with great possibilities of continuing sources of pleasure, joy and happiness . However , to reach old age involves several exceedances of obstacles , setbacks and moments that bring us into maturity . Can be considered biologically functional morphology as a regression that affects all major physiological systems to varying degrees . However , the feelings and sensations are stable . Does not prevent the individual from enjoying life active , healthy and happy way, sexuality can be lived to the end. However , prejudice against sexuality of the elderly are diverse . The company maintains the myth of the asexual phase , excluding any of the imaginary experience of sexuality among the elderly , which in turn , believe that sexuality at this stage of life is no longer feeling . Therefore , we feel the need to study and understand how the elderly perceive sexuality . We know that to demystify this subject that permeates prejudices , myths , taboos and erroneous beliefs , it is necessary that health professionals understand the points that should be better worked at the prospect of this population in order to achieve more efficient educational activities in this context . We proposed , in this study , explore , collect , organize , synthesize, and share , through the systematic literature review , the results of primary articles relating to the perception of older people in relation to their sexuality . This is a search based on a descriptive - analytical and documentary study, based on a systematic review of scientific literature on the central theme of this study. By summarizing the main ideas of the selected studies , we identify the extreme situations and from this, we list 04 categories and 02 subcategories or developments : a lack of information about sexuality ; - Aged can not have sexual activity ; - The issues gender in the social context and its influence on the sexuality of the elderly; - factors such as disease , lack of a partner and family influence are reasons that interfere with the experiences of sexuality . Developments as a religion and its influences on sexuality of the elderly; - The physical and hormonal changes complicate the experiences of sexuality . After the results obtained from the research , it appears that the perception of the elderly on sexuality is still confusing , which contributes to a negative view . Becomes evident that there is a gap on the subject and lacking information for debunking that permeate our cultural scene with myths and taboos that hinder the experience and authentic perception of the elderly with regard to sexuality. We understand that only education , along with health professionals such as nurses , can and should assist in demystifying and transforming the repressive gaze of the elderly who deny sexuality , as well as the forerunners of own prejudices that permeate the subject

Essays on the Dynamics of Residential Sorting, Health, and Environmental Quality

January 2020 (has links)
abstract: My dissertation combines the notion of residential sorting from Tiebout (1956) with Grossman’s (1972) concept of a health production function to develop a new empirical framework for investigating what individuals’ residential location choices reveal about their valuation of amenities, the welfare effects of climate change, the forces underlying environmental justice, and the value of a statistical life. Location choices are affected by age, health, and financial constraints, and by exposure to local amenities that affect people’s health and longevity. Chapter 1 previews how I formalize this idea and investigate its empirical implications in three interrelated essays. Chapter 2 investigates interactions between health, the environment, and income. Seniors tend to move at higher rates after being diagnosed with new chronic medical conditions. While seniors generally tend to move to locations with less polluted air, those who have been diagnosed with respiratory conditions move to relatively more polluted locations. This counterintuitive pattern is reconciled by documenting that new diagnoses bring about increases in medical expenditures, thereby limiting disposable income that can be spent on housing. Relatively cheaper places tend to be more polluted, and higher exposure to pollution leaves seniors more vulnerable to future health shocks. In Chapter 3, I combine information about housing prices with estimates of location-specific effects on mortality to estimate the Value of a Statistical Life (VSL) for seniors - one of the most important statistics used to evaluate policies affecting mortality. Since local amenities correlate with causal mortality effects, but also provide utility independently, the difficulty in controlling for local amenities implies that my VSL estimates are best interpreted as bounds. Chapter 4 builds a new structural framework for evaluating spatially heterogeneous changes to local amenities. I estimate a dynamic model of location choice with a sample of 5.5 million seniors from 2001-2013. Their average annual willingness-to-pay to avoid future climate change in the United States under a “business as usual” scenario ranges from $962 for older, sicker groups who are more vulnerable to climate change’s negative effects on health to -$1,894 for younger, healthier groups, who value warmer winters and are relatively resilient. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Economics 2020
