[en] PEACOCKS, HUMANS AND FERRARIS: CONSPICUOUS CONSUMPTION AS A CRITERION OF ATTRACTIVENESS OF HETEROSEXUALS AND NON-HETEROSEXUALS / [pt] PAVÕES, HUMANOS E FERRARIS: O CONSUMO CONSPÍCUO COMO CRITÉRIO DE ATRATIVIDADE DE HETEROSSEXUAIS E NÃO-HETEROSSEXUAISFELIPE CARVALHO NOVAES 11 December 2018 (has links)
[en] Several factors are essential in judging the attractions of your mating partners. These encompassing physical factors, psychological traits, social status and demonstration of resources/wealth. Men who possess resources are considered more attractive by women who prefer long-term relationships. Recent research showing conspicuous consumption may play an important role as a criterion of attractiveness. On the other hand, conspicuous consumption seems to increase the attractiveness of men to women interested in short-term relationships. Thus, the first chapter consists of a literature review of resources as signs of attractiveness in long-term relationships. The second method is an analysis of the results of four experiments that attempt to corroborate an influence of conspicuous consumption as a criterion of attractiveness of women interested in short-term relationships. Considering the scarcity of studies with non-heterosexual participants, the second objective of this study was to verify if conspicuous consumption would influence the attractiveness of non-heterosexual individuals in short-term relationships. The results did not showed influence of conspicuous consumption on attractiveness, regardless of sexual orientation. Surprisingly, some results suggested that women found individuals more attractive in the condition without conspicuous consumption. This may have occurred due to sample bias. Most participants had a high educational level, which may be associated with higher preference for long-term relationships. The object used as conspicuous consumption (popular car and luxury car) may still not be of special interest to the sample with a high degree of schooling.

Sexuality is a complex phenomenon, and there isn't a theory that explains, in itself, as is the development of sexuality, simnce the study of sexuality requires a development. From a analysis of behavior view, it can be considered that sexual behavior, as well as any other behavior, is determined by the three levels of selection, or is the result of a genetic load, coupled with a history of learning and the context in which the individual belongs. This descriptive study aimed to investigate, through reports of young homesexuals and heterosexuals, personal opinions on the development of sexuality and sexual-affective orientation in childhood and adolescence. Eight people participated, aged between 22 and 28 years, four men and four women. The data was collected through interviews and reports were evaluated in content resulting in the following categories: Category 1 - Reports on the period of childhood and adolescence, highlighting the influence of behavior models in the development of affefctive social relations; Category 2 - Reports on the relationship with family, market by conflict, with established emotional ties with mother and father, addressing the relation with the family; Category 3 - Sex education: report on education and family and school influences on sexuality, highlighting the influence of cultural aspects, besides the reinforcement contingencies in human development, besides raising the characteristics of the school on the process of human development and consecutively in sexual development; Category 4 - Reports about sexuality in human development, raising the participants' understanding about sexuality, and the reports related to the early episodes of sexuality; Category 5 - Reports of sexuality current and future expectations, which demonstrated the importance of family, friends and loving couples in the development of sexual identy. At the end of the study, concluded... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)

The literature highlights many signs of suffering present in young homosexuals (addictions, depression, anxiety, suicidal risk ...). According to the minority stress model (Meyer, 1995), this pain can be linked to many stressors faced by homosexuals. The various stressful experiences which they face have been grouped under the term “minority stress”, such as disclosure of their homosexuality. According to the transactional stress model and the minority stress model, this research aims to better understand the course of the disclosure of their homosexuality, and characteristics of the stress during this announcement, compared to others highly stressful situations. Study 1 is a quantitative study which emphasize specificities of stress during the announcement, compared to others stressful situations. Study 2 is a qualitative approach. It aims to complement data from study 1 and to highlight different stages of sexual identity construction. Results of study 1 reflect specificities of stress during the disclosure of their homosexuality. These are found at different levels of stressful transaction (characteristics of the situation, primary assessment, secondary, coping strategies and emotional experience). These results also illustrate the prevalence of homosexuals suicidal risk when faced with a highly stressful situation. Results of study 2 confirm those of study 1, and highlight the complexity construction of sexual identity.
