The politics of place: photographing New York City during the New Deal

Graves, Lauren 06 October 2021 (has links)
My dissertation contemplates the role that New Deal era photographs played in developing a sense of place particular to New York City’s environs. I argue that photographers used the camera as a tool to cultivate the relationship between people and the urban landscape by focusing their lens on liminal and collective spaces within the metropolitan environment. My first chapter examines Helen Levitt’s survey of African-American, Latinx, and Italian children in East Harlem, sponsored by the Federal Art Project. My second chapter reviews a series produced under the same Project—Arnold Eagle and David Robbins’s study of the Jewish and Italian sections of the Lower East Side. My third chapter turns to Sid Grossman and Sol Libsohn’s chronicling of Irish and Italian second-generation immigrants in Chelsea, supported by the Photo League. In each chapter, I contend that the prominence of communal spaces within these images results in documents that can be read as an effort by photographer and subject alike to define their place within the contested sites of the urban street. Through this focus on vernacular spaces, these surveys disrupt ideals of belonging and work to document processes of place-making distinct to each occupier. Employing analytical lenses of cultural geography and phenomenology, I theorize the role of collective spaces within each series. These vernacular sites, propelled by their indistinct physical and social dimensions, hold slippery identities, shifting boundaries, and a collection of potential “owners.” Due to this ambiguity, these spaces hold an opportunity for collective emergent action. Throughout these series the photographers show neighborhood dwellers engaging collective spaces of the city to satisfy their quotidian needs. My dissertation examines how inhabitants, through acts of play, ritual, and embodied remembrance, transform these interstitial spaces into place. I consider the photographer’s role as folklorist, sociologist, and archeologist—as they survey how their subjects engage, occupy, and transform the local and ordinary spaces of their metropolitan landscape into places created and claimed by city-dwellers. In attending to the spatial dimension, I consider how photographs register and explore the lives of marginalized communities within the contested landscapes of New York City’s streets.

Connecting Systemic RNAi to the Endomembrane System in Caenorhabditis elegans

Holmgren, Benjamin T. January 2017 (has links)
RNA interference (RNAi) is a gene regulation mechanism conserved among eukaryotes. To silence gene expression, RNAi relies on a short single-stranded guide RNA to steer the RNA-induced Silencing Complex (RISC) to mRNAs with guide strand-complementary sequences. RNAi is a highly membrane-associated process. The RISC complex is likely loaded at the rough Endoplasmic Reticulum, where it can bind to and degrade mRNAs. Components of the RISC complex also colocalize to late endosomes, and the efficiency of RNAi-mediated silencing is affected by changes in late endosome to lysosome fusion. RNAi can be systemic and inherited, effecting gene silencing in distal tissues and in the offspring. In this thesis, the model organism Caenorhabditis elegans was used to identify and characterize factors connecting systemic and inherited RNAi to the endomembrane system. We identify two SNARE proteins, SEC-22 and SYX-6, that both act as negative regulators of RNAi. SNAREs are necessary for vesicle fusion. Both SEC-22 and SYX-6 localize to late endosomes, and both interact with systemic RNAi protein SID-5 in a yeast two-hybrid (Y2H) screen. We find that in addition to its function in systemic RNAi, SID-5 is required for proper maturation of late endosomes. Furthermore, we identify the putative RNA-binding protein C12D8.1 as a novel regulator of RNAi inheritance. Mutant C12D8.1 animals will have enhanced inheritance of RNAi silencing, which negatively affects the ability of the progeny to silence new targets using RNAi. Finally, we describe a novel, object-based method for estimating significance in colocalization studies. This method helped us describe and quantify spatial relations between fluorophore-labeled proteins in situations where such analyses would otherwise be impossible. In conclusion, the work presented here further elucidates the connection between cellular RNAi, the endomembrane system, and the outside world.

The dual credit teaching experience on high school and college campuses from the perspective of community college faculty

Hinds, David Meade 06 July 2012 (has links)
Hundreds of thousands of students earn credit toward both high school and college each year through dual credit programs. This research project used qualitative methods to elicit the story, the shared reality, of faculty who spend their time with these students. It is an important story to tell as legislators, community college and public school administrators, parents, and students are motivated to see these programs not only continue, but grow. System influence diagrams (SIDs) depicting the dual credit teaching experience on high school and college campuses were developed for two separate groups of community college faculty. The models were used for comparing the high school and college dual credit teaching environments. The results of this study support other research, suggesting there are important differences between the high school and college environments when teaching dual credit students. From an overall perspective, faculty found the community college campus environment superior to teaching on the high school campus for reasons related to facilities and technology, a sense of belonging in the larger organization, and the integration of dual credit students into a more traditional college environment. / text

Fidelis, Vanessa Rosa Pereira 09 December 2011 (has links)
In the mid-sixties there was a boom in civil construction and at that moment it was possible to observe a considerable increase in the activities in this area. Similarly, we currently witness an important period in civil construction in Brazil, in which a great amount of investment was made by the Federal Government, allowing the construction of large-scale in all the national territory, principally of the Social Interest Dwellings (SID). This overview demonstrated that the constructive methods have to be developed for the completion of the chronograms, the improving of the quality and the reduction of environmental impact. However, as well as in previous decades, great part of the systems adopted in Brazil still refer to traditional construction processes and, according to what was determined by CAIXA, they are called conventional processes, that is, performed with constructive systems that have already been regulated. In the Triangulo Mineiro region is not different, great part of the constructions of the SID refer to the conventional way, executed with structures and foundations in reinforced concrete, ceramic blocks of masonry sealing, mortared coating in a single layer and wood covering structures with ceramic tiles. The point is that the conventional systems normally have a series of deficiencies related to the conception of the product, the insufficient project detailing and the enormous dependency on the knowledge of the labor execution workers. The pattern establishing is clearly difficult, together with the high level of labor using and the consequent low level of mechanization; the bad quality of some materials, principally the ones resulted from the direct nature extraction; and mostly, the incomplete projects and the inexistence of planning, do not permit the civil construction to be executed, practically speaking, in a rational way. Therefore, the reason why so many companies that construct the SID choose the traditional processes is questioned, even knowing that it is necessary to reach a more sustainable production in terms of the environment, increase the quality and the productivity in construction. This way, it is necessary to turn the attention to the improvement of quality and the rising of the industrialization level of the traditional constructive processes, which still represent a great part of the market, as well as the search of implementation of non-conventional constructive processes. Due to this demand, this work presents the analysis of the implications of adopting such processes in the execution of the SID in large scale, through the analysis of projects, procedures and losses in the productive process of a one-story-dwellings enterprise, executed in the city of Uberlandia, aiming the rationalization to obtain better results in quality and less generation of waste.

Generating 8-Bit Sound Effects Using Interactive Evolution

Garpenhall, Tobias January 2022 (has links)
Interactive evolution is explored and applied for the automatic generation of 8-bit sound effects (SFX). Procedurally generating a type of content can result in greater accessibility, cut development costs, and more. However, a natural problem that follows this approach is user fatigue. An 8-bit SFX generator is developed, tested, and then evaluated to understand its capabilities, usability, and effectiveness of several applicable solutions for reducing user fatigue. Results indicate that the software is intuitive to learn and use while providing a decent variety to the generated content with a probable feeling of progression. The implemented solutions for abating user fatigue show promise towards making the software practically viable. However, there are still areas in the developed artifact that suggest for further study.

Vad är dyspraxi?

Johnsson, Gun, Tiger SIrborn, Susanne January 2007 (has links)
