The following topics are enclosed in this work: fundamentals about traffic signals operation and description of some analytical models of evaluation of isolated and co-ordinated traffic signals performance; considerations about the traffic of vehicles simulation and comments regarding some of the main developed simulation models; description of the traffic simulator INTEGRATION; analysis of the values obtained using INTEGRATION in some simple cases of intersections with isolated traffic signals and coordinated, through the comparison with the supplied results obtained in other theoretical evaluation models of the traffic signals performance; and INTEGRATION simulator application in the evaluation of some operation alternatives of a signalized stretch in the city of Managua-Nicaragua. The values obtained with the INTEGRATION in the simple cases of intersections with isolated and co-ordinated traffic signals are close to the supplied ones by theoretical models, as well as consistent with the real behavior of vehicles operation at isolated and co-ordinated traffic signals. The current situation analysis of the stretch of way of Managua indicated that: the local traffic is totally congested in the peak times; and the alterations in the traffic signals programing do not solve the problem; having the necessity of increasing and additional lane in the main lane. Considering the increase of these two lanes, six scenary of operation were generated, in a combination involving the following aspects: isolated and co-ordinated traffic signals, existence of conversion the left turn or not and co-ordinated traffic signals in the main way in one on the other direction. All these scenes and the current scene had been more evaluated using simulator INTEGRATION. The results point that the best scenes are those where it is forbidden the left turn. For particular circunstances, the co-ordinated traffic signals did not present benefits that normally present.

Cost-Effective Integrated Wireless Monitoring of Wafer Cleanliness Using SOI TechnologyJanuary 2010 (has links)
abstract: The thesis focuses on cost-efficient integration of the electro-chemical residue sensor (ECRS), a novel sensor developed for the in situ and real-time measurement of the residual impurities left on the wafer surface and in the fine structures of patterned wafers during typical rinse processes, and wireless transponder circuitry that is based on RFID technology. The proposed technology uses only the NMOS FD-SOI transistors with amorphous silicon as active material with silicon nitride as a gate dielectric. The proposed transistor was simulated under the SILVACO ATLAS Simulation Framework. A parametric study was performed to study the impact of different gate lengths (6 μm to 56 μm), electron motilities (0.1 cm2/Vs to 1 cm2/Vs), gate dielectric (SiO2 and SiNx) and active materials (a-Si and poly-Si) specifications. Level-1 models, that are accurate enough to acquire insight into the circuit behavior and perform preliminary design, were successfully constructed by analyzing drain current and gate to node capacitance characteristics against drain to source and gate to source voltages. Using the model corresponding to SiNx as gate dielectric, a-Si:H as active material with electron mobility equal to 0.4 cm2/V-sec, an operational amplifier was designed and was tested in unity gain configuration at modest load-frequency specifications. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.S.
Ultrasonic linear phased array probes consist of several single elements. By exciting each element at a certain time wave fronts can be tilted, focused or both combined. This is accomplished by a set of delays which is called "focal law". Hence, the shape and the quality of the resulting wave front depends significantly on focal law calculation. This state-of-the-art method is based on two simplifications: firstly on the assumption that each single element has identical vibration behaviour, and secondly on the simple geometrical approximation of the signal propagation time. In this work both aspects will be investigate in detail.
For characterization of the individual vibration behaviour the most important transducer parts and theirs acoustical properties will be presented. The theoretical view on the inner structure is completed by two measuring methods: scanning acoustic microscopy as well as computed tomography. Furthermore, the effective mechanical displacement of the transducer interface will be analyzed by Laser Doppler vibrometry. Hence, the individual vibration behaviour of the single elements can be compensated which yields an optimized superposition.
To investigate the second assumption the 4D-CEFIT-PSS simulation environment has been developed. The combination of CEFIT (cylindric elasto dynamic finite integration technique) and PSS (point source synthesis) considers all effects of wave physics. A comprehensive parametric study shows the effects of geometrical aperture size concerning resulting signals in decided focal points. The differences of wave propagation in the time and frequency domain will be pointed out.
Concluding, focal laws were calculated with the geometrical and the simulation based approach. The resulting wave propagation is simulated for selected focal points. The results were compared both ways, qualitatively and quantitatively. Hereby the difference between both methods was distinguishable.
The outcome is a method for modified focal law calculation. Both, the consideration of the individual vibration characteristics and the application of the new focal laws result in higher signal-to-noise ratios for linear phased arrays.

The Normative Underpinnings of Population-Level Alcohol Use: An Individual-Level Simulation ModelProbst, Charlotte, Vu, Tuong Manh, Epstein, Joshua M., Nielsen, Alexandra E., Buckley, Charlotte, Brennan, Alan, Rehm, Jürgen, Purshouse, Robin C. 22 July 2020 (has links)
Background. By defining what is “normal,” appropriate, expected, and unacceptable, social norms shape human behavior. However, the individual-level mechanisms through which social norms impact population-level trends in health-relevant behaviors are not well understood. Aims. To test the ability of social norms mechanisms to predict changes in population-level drinking patterns. Method. An individual-level model was developed to simulate dynamic normative mechanisms and behavioral rules underlying drinking behavior over time. The model encompassed descriptive and injunctive drinking norms and their impact on frequency and quantity of alcohol use. A microsynthesis initialized in 1979 was used as a demographically representative synthetic U.S. population. Three experiments were performed in order to test the modelled normative mechanisms. Results. Overall, the experiments showed limited influence of normative interventions on population-level alcohol use. An increase in the desire to drink led to the most meaningful changes in the population’s drinking behavior. The findings of the experiments underline the importance of autonomy, that is, the degree to which an individual is susceptible to normative influence. Conclusion. The model was able to predict theoretically plausible changes in drinking patterns at the population level through the impact of social mechanisms. Future applications of the model could be used to plan norms interventions pertaining to alcohol use as well as other health behaviors.

Hydrogels for engineeringEhrenhofer, Adrian, Wallmersperger, Thomas 09 August 2019 (has links)
In engineering, materials are chosen from databases: Engineers orient on specific parameters such as Young's modulus, yield stress or thermal expansion coefficients for a desired application. For hydrogels, the choice of materials is rather tedious since no generalized material parameters are currently available to quantify the swelling behavior. The normalization of swelling, which we present in the current work, allows an easy comparison of different hydrogel materials. Thus, for a specific application like a sensor or an actuator, an adequate material can be chosen. In the current work, we present the process of normalization and provide a course of action for the data analysis. Special challenges for hydrogels like hysteresis, conditional multi-sensitivity and anisotropic swelling are addressed. Then, the Temperature Expansion Model is shortly described and applied. Using the derived normalized swelling curves, a nonlinear expansion coefficient β(F) is derived. The derived material behavior is used in an analytical model to predict the bending behavior of a beam made of thermo-responsive hydrogel material under an anisotropic temperature load. A bending behavior of the beam can be observed and the impact of other geometry and material parameters can be investigated. To overcome the limitations of the one-dimensional beam theory, the material behavior and geometry can be implemented in Finite Element analysis tools. Thus, novel applications for hydrogels in various fields can be envisioned, designed and tested. This can lead to a wider use of smart materials in sensor or actuator devices even by engineers without chemical background.
