Development of Improved Connection Details for Voided Slab BridgesJoyce, Patrick Conor 23 June 2014 (has links)
Adjacent voided slab bridges (AVSB) are economical systems for short spans. They provide the advantages of having low clearances due to their small section depths, accelerated construction times, and high torsional stiffness. The current longitudinal connection detail, a partial depth grouted shear key, has been known to fail in many of these bridges. The failure leads to reflective cracking in the wearing surface which allows chloride laden water to seep down through the joint, where it corrodes the reinforcement and prestressing strand. Ultimately, the failed keys lead to costly repairs and bridge replacements sooner than their proposed lifespan.
This research project aimed to develop a more durable longitudinal connection detail by using sub-assemblages to test five alternate connections. The objective was to find a connection that abated all cracking in the shear key, thus removing the need for transverse post-tensioning. The tested connections employed alternate connection shapes and two different mix designs of fiber reinforced high strength concretes. The results showed that each tested connection outperformed the current detail.
The findings of this research indicate that the longitudinal connection detail of adjacent member voided slab bridges should be modified. The modified version should be a blockout with lap splice connection detail utilizing a nonproprietary fiber reinforced high strength

Influence of Bridge Parameters on Finite Element Modeling of Slab on Girder BridgesBapat, Amey Vivek 06 January 2010 (has links)
The present study is part of the Long Term Bridge Performance Program (LTBP) funded by the Federal Highway Administration. The objectives of this program are to create a comprehensive database of quantitative information of the long-term performance of selected pilot bridges and to develop a methodology to assess bridge performance. Finite element (FE) modeling of the pilot bridges is an intrinsic part of the LTBP program and is intended to not only assist with instrumentation decisions, but also to provide further insight into the behavior of these bridges, which cannot be achieved solely from field testing of the bridges. This thesis provides a comprehensive study of a plethora of issues associated with the development of reliable and accurate FE models of bridges.
The first objective of this investigation was to develop reliable finite element models with a variety of levels of refinement and to study the effect of the inclusion of various bridge parameters in the model, such as bridge skew, degree of composite action, thermal gradient and level of support restraint, on the response of bridges. First, the suitability of different modeling techniques and of elements used to model the primary bridge components was assessed using simple models for which analytical solutions are readily available. From these studies, it was concluded that shell elements are adequate to model the bridge deck, and beam and shell elements are both satisfactory to model the bridge girders. From the dynamic analyses of theWildcat Creek River Bridge and the Colquitz River Bridge, flexural modes of vibration were found to be highly sensitive to support restraints and to how the guardrails were modeled and less sensitive to the inclusion of bracing and thermal gradients in the model. The finite element models using extreme boundary conditions were successful in bracketing the field response. The factors identified from these analyses were considered in the analysis of the Virginia pilot bridge. Different support restraints, and the inclusion of skew and level of composite action in the model had noticeable impact on both the static and dynamic responses of the bridge. The results from these analyses were used to assist with instrumentation decisions prior to field-testing. The developed model will also be used to help researchers further understand the bridge's behavior and to help explain a variety of phenomena observed in the field. / Master of Science

Tilläggsisolering och fuktproblem i grundkonstruktionen platta på mark : En fallstudie i flerbostadshus inom stadsdelen Sätra i GävleBlom, Linus, Hedlund, Dan January 2014 (has links)
Between 1965 and 1974, the Swedish Parliament decided to build one million dwellings, called Million Program. The million program buildings were erected with new, untried design solutions, in a short range of time, and at low cost. The residential buildings from that time are now greatly in need of renovation. The municipal housing company, Gavlegårdarna, renovates and improves the energy efficiency at some of it’s apartment buildings in the district Sätra, Gävle. One problem is how to make the basic design of the slab on ground more energy efficiency and moisture proof. The study covers four representative flooring types in the Gavlegårdarnas million program area in Sätra. This study aims to investigate and evaluate proven methods for adding insulation in the four floor types. Also to look for solutions by designing additional insulation to treat damp problems and improve energy efficiency in an economical way. Existing flooring types are to be examined to check for new solutions as well. The aim is to produce a number of measures to provide property owners with different energy efficiency solutions. Results of calculations show that the perimeter area of the slab is exposed to moisture problems, while the centre of it does not have any notable problems. According to calculations, improved floor types have U-values reduced by 31% – 40% depending on the insulation thickness and design. However, investments have a long payback period and this is sometimes not economically viable. When a redevelopment project is performed, it is beneficial to simultaneously add insulation. If investors promote sustainable development, reduced energy consumption by the proposed measures is viable, as advocated by the environmental goals set by Sweden and the EU.

Concrete floor : Design of prefabricated pre-stressed hollow core slabs with verification through PRE-Stress and comparison with site-cast slab / Betongbjälklag : Dimensionering av prefabricerade förspända håldäcksplattor med verifiering genom PRE-Stress samt jämförelse med platsgjutet bjälklagEriksson, Alexander, Flykt, Veronica January 2020 (has links)
The most common prefabricated concrete slabs are hollow core slabs, which are usually pre-tensioned. How to design these parts is not compiled today in a manual where it is clear how this is done, this knowledge is generally classified as expert knowledge. The purpose was to bring forth how to design prefabricated pre-stressed hollow core slabs, HD/F, and then create a design aid that is compared by hand calculations with the PRE-Stress design program from StruSoft. Furthermore, to compare it with site-cast concrete slabs to see differences in the amount of material and the thickness of the structure under the same conditions. The design aid is not complete as some limitations had to be made. When it comes to results, the hand calculations in comparison with PRE-Stress have not resulted in identical answers but have proven to be on the safe side consistently through the design, which indicates that the design aid is fully functional. In the comparison with site-cast concrete slabs, it can be noted that prestressed hollow core slabs require less concrete volume, slimmer construction, and longer span widths but greater reinforcement volume.
