This research is the result of the development of a didactic sequence on the behavior of physical entities: particle, wave and wave-particle in the Double-Slit Experiment, in an adapted version from Feynman and assistants, which was developed with university students from the third grade of the Chemistry course, in the discipline of Quantum Chemistry, at a Brazilian public state university. The study aimed to discuss the fundaments and practices of thought experiments by using several didactic alternatives and its unfoldings to the teaching of scientific disciplines. The research, of qualitative basis, is anchored to the fundaments of thought experiments grounded on theories aiming to promote verbal and written communication of scientific knowledge. The research problem focuses on the difficulties that the students show in the classroom in order to explain and discuss their ideas when theses require that they master verbalization of scientific knowledge on the double-slit experiment in a meaningful, significant and dynamic manner. To the purpose of data interpretation and analysis, we used the interpretative perspective by means of the methodological and theoretical. Results revealed that the didactic procedures used are relevant since they allow problematization, discussion, the use of imagination and of verbal and written language, quite rare in classroom contexts of Quantum Chemistry. Regarding the texts, both the ones transcribed during the discussions and the students' speeches and those produced during the development of the research, required by the teacher, deserve attention. The text productions were found considerably reduced, fragmented, lacking progression and continuity of ideas, and also lacking the interconnected sequence of the parts that constitute an articulated whole. By means of discourse analysis, we detected loss of the line of unity that assures its interpretability... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)

Optimisation gas coolers for CO2 refrigeration applicationSantosa, I. Dewe January 2015 (has links)
Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a natural, low cost refrigerant with good thermo-physical properties. CO2 is a good alternative for replacing HFC refrigerants that possess high global warming potential and reducing the direct impacts of refrigeration systems on the environment. However, CO2 refrigeration systems operate at relatively high condenser/gas cooler pressures and this imposes special design and control considerations. The gas cooler is a very important part of the system and can have significant influence on its performance. In sub-critical operation, good gas cooler/condenser design can reduce the condenser pressure and delay switching to supercritical operation which increases system efficiency. In supercritical operation optimum design and control can enable the system to operate at pressures that maximise system efficiency. In air cooled systems, gas coolers/condensers are of the finned-tube type. This type of heat exchanger is well established in the HVAC and refrigeration industries. The large changes in the CO2 properties in the gas cooler, however, during supercritical operation impose special design and manufacturing considerations. This research project considered the influence of the unique heat transfer characteristics of CO2 on the design and performance of finned tube air cooled condensers/gas coolers for CO2 refrigeration applications. A combined experimental and modelling approach using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) was employed. A CO2 condenser/gas cooler test facility was developed for the experimental investigations. The facility employs a ‘booster’ hot gas bypass CO2 refrigeration system, with associated condenser/gas cooler test rig and evaporator load simulation facility. A series of experimental tests were carried out with two gas coolers which incorporated horizontal and horizontal-vertical slit fins and was obtained adequate experimental data concerning gas cooler performance. CFD modelling was used to study the performance of the gas coolers. The model was validated against test results and was shown to predict the air outlet temperature and heat rejection of the gas cooler with an accuracy of within ±5%. The model was subsequently used to evaluate the effect of a fin slit between the 1st and 2nd row of tubes of the gas cooler as well as a vertical slit on the 1st row before the last tube of the section. The results showed a 6%-8% increase in the heat rejection rate of the gas cooler compared to the performance without the horizontal slit. The vertical slit in the fin of the last tube has resulted in an additional increase in heat rejection over and above that for the horizontal slit of 1%-2%. CFD modelling was also used to investigate the variation of the refrigerant side, air side and overall heat transfer coefficient along the heat exchanger. The results showed that the refrigerant heat transfer coefficient increases with the decreasing of bulk refrigerant temperature and reaches its maximum when the specific heat of the refrigerant is highest. Furthermore, increasing the refrigerant mass flux, increases the refrigerant side heat transfer coefficient and heat rejection. This can reduce the size of the gas cooler for a given capacity at the expense of higher pressure drop and compressor power consumption. Air side and overall heat transfer coefficient correlations were developed for the specific gas cooler designs which were investigated and showed the heat transfer coefficients increase with increasing Reynolds Number.

Mutační analýza genu TRPC6 u pacientů s nefrotickým syndromem / Mutational analysis of the TRPC6 gene in patients with nephrotic syndromeObeidová, Lena January 2011 (has links)
Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis is one of the commonest cause of the nephrotic syndrome in adults patients. It is a damage of glomerulus characterized by leakage of proteins to urine and oedemas which usually develops into the end-stage renal disease within 10 years. Recently have been described familial forms of this disease which arise from injury to proteins making up filtration barrier of kidney. In 2005 non-selective ion channel TRPC6 was assigned among these proteins. In this thesis I focused on summarizing existing knowledge of the nephrotic syndrome, focal segmental glomerulosclerosis and involvement of TRPC6 in their origin. Second part of this work is devoted to the screening analysis of TRPC6 gene to discover possible mutations and polymorfisms in 47 patients with histologically proven focal segmental glomerulosclerosis or minimal change disease. The used methods were high resolution melting and direct sequencing. In the group of patients was detected no pathogenic mutation, only 2 known polymorfisms P15S and A404V and few changes which do not result in alteration of amino acid. So it seems TRPC6 gene mutations are a rare cause of the focal segmental glomerulosclerosis in adult patients in the Czech Republic.

Exploring the dynamics and dark halos of elliptical galaxies at large radiiForestell, Amy Dove 23 October 2009 (has links)
Dark matter is now accepted as an integral part of our universe, and galaxy dynamics have long provided the most convincing observational evidence for dark matter. Spiral galaxies have traditionally been used for these studies because of their more simple kinematics, however elliptical galaxies need to be understood as well. In this dissertation I present deep long-slit spectroscopy from the University of Texas’ Hobby-Eberly Telescope for a sample of elliptical galaxies. For a subsample of galaxies I fit axisymmetric orbit-superposition models with a range of dark halo density profiles. I find that all three galaxies modeled require a significant dark halo to explain their motions. However, the shape of the dark halo is not the expected NFW profile, but rather a profile with a flat central slope. I also discuss the galaxy masses, anisotropies, and stellar mass-to-light ratios. / text

Variação da ordem ótima de modelo autorregressivo com a força de contração muscular e a duração do eletromiograma. / Variation of optimal autoregressive order with electromyogram length and contraction forceRomaro, Cecília 02 April 2015 (has links)
Needle electromyography signals (EMG) can be modeled by a linear time invariant system (LTI). The posed question is How many coefficients are needed for an adequate modeling? This Masters dissertation studies how the optimal number of autoregressive coefficients changes concomitantly with the epoch length and the muscle contraction force for needle electromyography signals recorded under the same experimental conditions. The study was conducted on signals from six normal individuals at 10%, 25%, 50% and 80% of the maximum voluntary contraction and epoch lengths of 500ms, 250ms, 100ms, 50ms and 25ms. Thus, a probability density function is suggested for the autoregressive model order that best describes the electromyographic signal obtained at a specific \"contraction force\" and has a defined \"epoch length\".

The Genetic and Functional Analysis of the Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder SpectrumOzomaro, Uzoezi 22 June 2011 (has links)
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and the spectrum of associated conditions, affect 2-4% of the population worldwide. Although heritability studies in OCD have shown a 3 - 12 times increased risk for first degree relatives, the identification of the underlying risk-conferring genetic variation using classic genetic association studies has proven to be difficult. The possibility of a larger contribution of rare genetic variants to the risk of psychiatric disorder has been suggested by several successful studies. We expect that a spectrum of risk allele frequencies exists, which includes not only common variation but also a substantial amount of rare genetic variants that contribute to OCD. This thesis is aimed at identifying and functionally characterizing rare genetic variation in the OCD spectrum. Identified statistically significant variants were scrutinized for changes related to synaptic function using high content screening and subsequent functional analyses. Identifying the genetic profile of rare variants found in the OCD spectrum cohort combined with the functional impact that these variants have has provided insight into the etiology of the OCD spectrum. With these approaches a foundation can be laid for the development of a predictive model of the OCD spectrum.

Previous issue date: 2010-06-30 / Coordena??o de Aperfei?oamento de Pessoal de N?vel Superior / Recently, planar antennas have attracted interest due to its characteristics as well as the advantages they offer compared to other types of antennas. In the area of mobile communications the need for such antennas has become increasingly intense due to development, which requires antennas that operate in multifrequency and broadband. The microstrip antennas have narrow bandwidth due to losses in the dielectric caused by irradiation. Another limitation is the radiation pattern degradation due to generation of surface waves in the substrate. Some techniques are being developed to minimize this bandwidth limitation, as is the case in the study of type materials PBG - Photonic Band Gap, to compose the dielectric material. The analysis developed in this work were performed with use of the method LTT - Transverse Transmission Line, in the field of Fourier transform that uses a component propagating in the y direction (transerve real direction of propagation z), thus treating the general equations of the fields electric and magnetic fields as a functions of y E and Hy . This work has as main objective the method LTT structures resonator line slot with four layers of material photonic PBG, for obtaining the complex resonant frequency and efficiency of this structure.
PBG theory is applied to obtain the relative permittivity for the substrate biases sep compounds photonic material. Numerical-computational results in graph form in two dimensions for all the analysis are presented for the proposed structures that have photonic materials, as substrates / Recentemente as antenas planares tem despertado interesses devido as suas caracter?sticas e vantagens que oferecem quando comparadas com os demais tipos de antenas.
