Life at 6 Miles Per Hour: Running at My Own Pace for Mind, Body and Spirit and its Applications for Advising in Higher Education

Dunbar, Elizabeth S. 01 January 2016 (has links)
Growing up, I never considered myself an athlete. I did not participate in sports or compete on a track, field or slope. However, as an adult, I have chosen to step outside my comfort zone, exploring challenges that push me physically and mentally to grow as a person. In this way, I found running. Running, for me, is not a mere mundane exercise routine, nor a competitive sport by which to be judged. Instead, running at my own pace has been a physical and emotional journey that eases my mind, nourishes my body and replenishes my spirit. Like an old friend, it is always there, year round, anywhere, anytime, to get me outside, pick me up when I feel blue, keep me company while I make new discoveries and introduce me to new friends. Moreover, my body benefits as my heart gets stronger, my bones denser, my risk for disease decreases, my stress disappears and I burn a ton of calories. Above all, the skills I develop from running, including confidence, perseverance, perspective, resiliency, connection to others, setting goals, the bliss of solitude, taking notice and living in the present, transfer to all areas of my life. In fact, my experience with running has helped me not only be a better person and enjoy life more, it has given me new tools to use professionally, as an academic advisor in higher education. It is my hope that my story, and the supporting research, will inspire others to explore running as an option for physical, emotional, social and, perhaps, spiritual presence in their lives. I share my story to all educators because the inclusion of exercise and mindfulness, for professional and student, can be a source of stress reduction, balance, cognitive focus and overall health. As a result of my own experiences with these activities, I think I understand their benefits and am able to impart the necessary encouragement to students to explore their options. In my opinion, the interesting relationship between writing and running, which I discovered and touched upon in this process, warrants further exploration.

Γραμμική - διαφορική κρυπτανάλυση και κατασκευή κρυπτογραφικά ασφαλών S-boxes / Linear - differential cryptanalysis and secure S-boxes construction

Γιαννακόπουλος, Χαράλαμπος 23 November 2007 (has links)
In this Master Thesis we make an attempt to construct secure block ciphers (Chap.1). First of all, we present in details the theoretical background of Linear Cryptanalysis (Chap.2) and Differential Cryptanalysis (Chap.3). Then we apply Linear and Differential Cryptanalysis in CAST-128 algorithm (Chap.4), which is a modern block cipher algorithm. In Chap.5 we present the design parameters of a block cipher (S-box Design, Feistel Framework, Key Schedule and Round Function). Our contribution is the construction of cryptographically secure S-boxes using Bent Functions and Maiorana Functions and also we study the non-linearity of the constructed cryptosystem (Chap.6). In the last Chapter (Chap.7) we present our future research plan, based on this Master Thesis. The Source Code of the S-boxes construction can be found in Appendix A.

Portanto, conclui-se que a NCS-DOX é eficaz contra células cancerosas 4T1 in vitro e in vivo, e menos cardiotóxica que a DOX in vivo. ______________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / Doxorubicin (DOX) has shown to be effective in the treatment of solid and haematological cancers, but its potential irreversible cardiotoxicity limits the success of the treatment, lowering its therapeutic index. The selol, selenitotriacylglicerides mixture, has shown cytostatic activity in in vitro tests and ability to reduce the viability of doxorubicin-resistant cells. The general goals of this study were: 1) to develop nanocapsules containing selol and doxorubicin with diameter close to 200 nm, 2) to evaluate its in vitro and in vivo anticancer activity, and 3) to check its cardiotoxicity. The formulation consisted of nanocapsules with a core of selol and a shell of poly (methyl vinyl ether-co-maleic anhydride) conjugated to doxorubicin. The nanocapsules were stable and monodisperse. For in vitro tests, murine mammary adenocarcinoma cells (4T1) and fibroblast murine as non-tumor cell (NIH-3T3) were used. The treatments DOX (doxorubicin), NCS-DOX (nanocapsules of selol containing doxorubicin) and Pol-DOX (product of the reaction between PVM/MA and doxorubicin) caused a significant reduction in the viability of 4T1 cells. Internalization assays showed that NCS-DOX and Pol-DOX are more internalized than free DOX by 4T1 cells. NCS-DOX, similarly to free DOX, expose phosphatidylserine on the outside face membrane in 4T1 cells, this is an event that indicate apoptosis. NCS-DOX showed an increased ability to cause DNA fragmentation and to disturb the mitochondrial membrane polarization in comparison to free DOX. NCS-DOX was also able to induce higher production of ROS, at 3 and 24 hours of exposure. NCS-DOX and Pol-DOX altered intracellular distribution of doxorubicin when compared to free DOX alone, from the nuclei to the mitochondria. In in vivo studies, NCS-DOX and free DOX showed the same ability to reduce 4T1 tumor growth, and presented the same biodistribution in BALB/c mice. The NCS-DOX did not increase CK-MB levels when compared to the control. Free DOX significantly increased CK-MB activity. Therefore, it is concluded that the NCS-DOX is effective against 4T1 cancer cells in vitro and in vivo, and less cardiotoxic than free DOX in vivo.

Cultura luso-brasileira em perspectiva: Portugal, Brasil e o projeto cultural da revista Atlântico (1941-1945) / Luso-Brazilian culture in perspective: Portugal, Brazil and the cultural project of the Atlântico magazine (1941-1945)

Silva, Alex Gomes da 31 August 2011 (has links)
The Atlântico magazine was part of a larger project encompassed by Portugal and Brazil in the early 1940s. More precisely, in 1941 is signed the Luso-Brazilian culture agreement that resulted, among other elements, in the idealization of a project based on creating a magazine of culture and art. From this process arises Atlântico magazine, which owes its name to the attempt of finding a word sufficiently elastic, undulating to synthesize the vague and concrete of our aspirations, dreams and the reality of our vision, in the words of one of its directors António Ferro. Founded in 1942, the Atlântico magazine has had as proponents, António Ferro, the director of Secretariado da Propaganda Nacional (SPN) (Director of the Bureau of Propaganda Nacional) of Portugal and the director of the brazilian Departamento de Imprensa e Propaganda (DIP) (Department of Press and Propaganda), Lourival Fontes. This article, which covers the period from 1941 (year of the signing of the Cultural Luso-Brazilian) to 1945 (which marks both the end of the term of the DIP and the end of the first phase of the Atlântico), aims to discuss the idea defended by its writers that the nature of the Atlântico magazine is to be a journal of culture, literature and art, avoiding dealing with social problems, political or economic in the modern world, even when they concern to life in Brazil or Portugal. Moreover, the fact of bringing a bundle of intellectual rather diverse, systematic analysis of the Atlântico magazine aims to evaluate and understand the way in which authors and works appearing in the body of the publication.

In the last few years, Video Surveillance as a Service VSaaS has shown the significant increase in demand for security mechanisms to ensure reliability higher levels. In parallel, the Cloud Computing paradigm has become an important tool for remote computing services. VSaaS, for example, allows for storage large amounts of data. In 2012, 50% of big data storage were surveillance video and in general, videos have a high significance for their owners, not allowing long periods interruption. To avoid video services with low performance and increase the quality, mechanisms to ensure high availability in VSaaS are required. However, this task is difficult without generating a major impact on cost, so this paper proposes two VSaaS systems who underwent an availability analysis, using analytical models (RBD, CTMC, and SPN). The first system, entitled domestic, was characterized by essential elements of a basic structure VSaaS, for use in homes and small businesses. This system generated three architectures that were modeled to obtain closed formulas; they are important to performing analyzes. The model architecture one was validated, and other architectures vary these. The architecture three had the highest availability of the other architectures, by owning the largest number of replicated components. The downtime (in hours) this architecture compared to a without replication was 36.89%. For having the highest availability, a sensitivity analysis showed the "Node"component as the most relevant. In the second system, was showed a VSaaS in a company and has generated eighteen architectures. One of them compared to a baseline, we obtained a significant reduction in downtime (30%) and a small increase in cost (on the order of 7%). In case, of the service requires less downtime, another analysis pointed an architecture with a reduction 80% of downtime and increased 30% in the cost. We propose and analyze architectures that can help administrators make important decisions in the VSaaS implementation.

Immune evasion genes from Brugia malayi : functional analyses of Bm-SPN-2, the major secreted microfilarial product

Wu, Xuhang January 2018 (has links)
Many parasites have evolved to release products that inhibit host defence mechanisms such as enzymes in the mammalian host, in order to promote and sustain their survival within the host. The human filarial nematode Brugia malayi produces larval microfilariae, which circulate in the blood stream. Their most abundant secreted product is a serine protease inhibitor Bm-SPN-2. Serine protease inhibitors (Serpins) are reported to be involved in how the nematodes avoid host immune defences, and in the case of Bm-SPN-2, the protein was found to specifically inhibit the enzymatic activity of human neutrophil elastase and cathepsin G in a dose-dependent manner. More recently, these two enzymes have been linked to the activation of a major innate cytokine IL-33, which is stored as a full-length 270-aa protein in the cell nucleus, and released as an active C-terminal domain upon stimulation. As full-length (FL) human and murine IL-33 are not commercially available, soluble murine and human FL-IL-33 were produced in transfected HEK 293T cells, following mutation of the nuclear binding motif. In this form, IL-33 is no longer retained in the nucleus and can be purified as a soluble protein. It was confirmed that once cleaved, recombinant human IL-33 was able to induce significant IL-6 secretion by mast cells. Bm-SPN-2 was then shown to block human full-length IL-33 cleavage by inhibiting human neutrophil cathepsin G in a dose dependent manner, supporting the hypothesis that Bm-SPN-2 may act in vivo to prevent IL-33 activation and the promotion of the TH2 immune response. However, in the in vivo setting, it was unexpectedly found that IL-33R (ST2) gene deficiency did not enhance the survival of B. pahangi microfilariae. Furthermore, in the absence of IL-33R, murine immune responses to microfilariae were not significantly altered compared to wild-type BALB/c mice, other than in a significant increase in IL-33 expression. Hence while Bm-SPN-2 can act in vitro to forestall one of the key events in TH2 induction, this has not yet been shown to be crucial to the immune response to the parasite in vivo.

Algorithm and software development for security estimation of SPN-based block cipher against related-key attacks

Kaidalov, Dmytro January 2014 (has links)
Symmetric block ciphers are among the most widely used cryptographic primitives. In addition to providing privacy via encryption, block ciphers are used as basic components in the construction of hash functions, message authentication codes, pseudorandom number generator, as part of various cryptographic protocols and etc. One of the most popular block ciphers nowadays is AES (Advanced Encryption Standard), which has been used as a standard of encryption in many countries of the world. In spite of popularity of this cipher a huge attack was found on its key-expansion algorithm some years ago. That is why it is important to analyze carefully this component and understand what weak points admit attacks. Since we know that we can improve existing algorithm to protect cipher from attacks or build up a new algorithm taking into account founded weaknesses so there will be no chance to break it with existing knowledge. The goal of this project is to create some method which can estimate security of encryption algorithm against related-key attacks. For this reason the perspective block cipher is introduced. This cipher is a candidate to the public standard of encryption in Ukraine so that is why this research is very important. Actually the introduced method of estimation is created especially for this cipher but also can be used for other ciphers based on the substitution-permutation network. The developed method was applied to the cipher and results are represented in the report. Also the complexity estimation of this algorithm is expressed. The software implementation is described in the last chapter of report.
