EstÃgios curriculares: Ãptica do egresso do curso de odontologia da Universidade Federal do Cearà / CURRICULAR STAGE: THE EGRESS PERSPECTIVE OF THE COURSE OF DENTISTRY ON FEDERAL UNIVERSITY OF CEARAAlessandra Ãvellin dâAlmeida LÃbo 17 January 2013 (has links)
The Supervised Internship in Services of the Health System I, II and III are disciplines that integrate the curriculum of the course of Dentistry, Faculty of Pharmacy, Dentistry and Nursing on Federal University of Cearà (UFC) established in 2005. Occur in the 9th and 10th semesters of the course and follow the guidelines of the National Curriculum Guidelines, they aim to make students learn about the public health policies, forms of organization of services and practical actions at all levels of health care. Considering the time passed since the implementation of new curriculum and the need for continuous monitoring of this, a study was idealized to evaluate the internships from the perception of students who graduated from Dentistry at the UFC. Therefore, it was a descriptive and investigative study with qualitative approach through semi-structured interviews with former students of the UFC, formed in 2010. The aspects investigated were related to duration of stages, the infrastructure of local stage, the performance of supervisors, the correlation between the experiences and content studied during the course, the contribution of the stages for the formation of egress and their suggestions for improvement of them. The method recommended for data analysis was that described by Bardin - Content Analysis. The results were grouped into four categories as follows: Category 1 - The academic knowledge and reality, Category 2 - Performance of advisors, Category 3 - Infrastructure and Category 4 - Stage helped their career choice - which guided the discussions. It was concluded that despite the deficiencies reported on the infrastructure of the local stage, they contributed to the training of graduates, for they promoted a rapprochement with the social reality and the reality of health services. The role of the advisors was evaluated as positive, because assisted in the construction of new knowledge and practices, which were not contemplated during the disciplines intra-mural. The stages functioned as an opportunity to deepen the experience in some specialties, making the student chose this area for their professional practice, and also observed that the majority of respondents reported interest in future work in Public Health. Suggestions scored during the study will support the achievement of adjustments that are necessary to improve the curriculum, it is indispensable that other studies to avaluate the stages over time and who seek to investigate the opinions of others involved in the process: users, guiding stage and managers of health services.

Inpatient Management of Blood Pressure and Fluid Overload in Patients With End-Stage Renal Disease on HemodialysisJasensky, Alex, McNeill, Patrick, Erstad, Brian, Honkonen, Marcella January 2014 (has links)
Class of 2014 Abstract / Specific Aims: The main objectives of the study are to compare the number of antihypertensive medications upon admission versus discharge, determine the fluctuation index ((SBPmax – SBPmin)/Avg)x100) between inpatient HD sessions, determine the minimum SBP during each inpatient HD session and compare pre-HD weight to post-HD weight for each inpatient HD session to determine inter-dialytic weight gain. The findings of this study are expected to have a positive impact on the management of blood pressure and fluid overload in HD patients by identifying the adverse effects associated with an increased anti-hypertensive medication burden. Methods: The Institutional Review Board approved this retrospective chart review. The electronic medical record system identified patients that received HD between January 1, 2010 and January 1, 2013. The following data was collected: the admission diagnosis and patient comorbidities; time on dialysis prior to admission and time since last HD session; the number and class of anti-hypertensive medications documented on admission, while inpatient, and upon discharge; the use of midodrine, receipt of erythropoietin stimulating agents, total time on dialysis while admitted, intra-dialytic hypotensive events, blood pressure readings pre- and post-HD, and inter-dialytic weight gain. Descriptive and demographic variables were also collected from the electronic medical record systems. The investigators will use this information to compare the number of anti-hypertensive medications upon admission versus discharge, determine the fluctuation of systolic blood pressure (SBP) between each inpatient HD session, determine the minimum SBP during each inpatient HD session and compare pre-HD weight to post-HD weight to determine inter-dialytic weight gain and total volume removed per each HD session. Descriptive statistics will be used to analyze our demographic data. Multiple linear regression analyses will be completed to evaluate independent predictors of inter-dialytic weight gain and intra-dialytic hypotension. Main Results: Pending Conclusion: Pending

Statistical inference and efficient portfolio investment performanceLiu, Shibo January 2014 (has links)
Two main methods have been used in mutual funds evaluation. One is portfolio evaluation, and the other is data envelopment analysis (DEA). The history of portfolio evaluation dates from the 1960s with emphasis on both expected return and risk. However, there are many criticisms of traditional portfolio analysis which focus on their sensitivity to chosen benchmarks. Imperfections in portfolio analysis models have led to the exploration of other methodologies to evaluate fund performance, in particular data envelopment analysis (DEA). DEA is a non-parametric methodology for measuring relative performance based on mathematical programming. Based on the unique characteristics of investment trusts, Morey and Morey (1999) developed a mutual funds efficiency measure in a traditional mean-variance model. It was based on Markowitz portfolio theory and related the non-parametric methodologies to the foundations of traditional performance measurement in mean-variance space. The first application in this thesis is to apply the non-linear programming calculation of the efficient frontier in mean variance space outlined in Morey and Morey (1999) to a new modern data set comprising a multi-year sample of investment funds. One limitation of DEA is the absence of sampling error from the methodology. Therefore the second innovation in this thesis extends Morey and Morey (1999) model by the application of bootstrapped probability density functions in order to develop confidence intervals for the relative performance indicators. This has not previously been achieved for the DEA frontier in mean variance space so that the DEA efficiency scores obtained through Morey and Morey (1999) model have not hitherto been tested for statistical significance. The third application in this thesis is to examine the efficiency of investment trusts in order to analyze the factors contributing to investment trusts' performance and detect the determinants of inefficiency. Robust-OLS regression, Tobit models and Papke-Wooldridge (PW) models are conducted and compared to evaluate contextual variables affecting the performance of investment funds. From the thesis, new and original Matlab codes designed for Morey and Morey (1999) models are presented. With the Matlab codes, not only the results are obtained, but also how this quadratic model is programming could be very clearly seen, with all the details revealed.

Respecting Tradition: A Practical Exercise Using Theatrical Stage Lighting to Enhance a Work from Traditional Beijing OperaZhang, Jingwei January 2014 (has links)
During the early 20th century, artists associated with Beijing Opera reformed various elements of the performance to reflect contemporary events. Attempts at reform were deemed unsuccessful since most traditional components of the Beijing Opera were obscured.
This thesis explores the use of theatrical stage lighting with specific emphasis on the use of stage lighting to support the aspects of time, space, and mood which are inherent in the performance. The ultimate objective is to do this without destroying the original performance style associated with Beijing Opera.
The practical component of this thesis is based on the McCandless method of stage lighting and the application of this method to the lighting design created for Murder of a Concubine, a traditional piece of repertory of the Beijing Opera. The culminating performance was presented on December 1st, 2013 on the Academic Hall stage in the Department of Theatre of the University of Ottawa.

Uremic PruritusKfoury, Lara W., Jurdi, Makram A. 01 September 2012 (has links)
Uremic pruritus remains one of the most frustrating and potentially disabling symptoms in patients with endstage renal disease. It affects up to 90% of patients on dialysis. Several hypotheses have been postulated for the possible underlying etiology, but none is conclusive. Aside from kidney transplantation, which is the only definitive treatment, therapeutic approaches have largely been empirical, and no firm evidence-based treatments are available. The main goal of therapy remains to minimize the severity of pruritus and improve the quality of life especially among those who are not transplantation candidates or are waiting for surgery.

Need experienced by persons with late stage aidsRabbets, Fred C. January 1997 (has links)
Dissertation submitted to the FacuIty ofArts for the Masters degree in Clinical Psychology in the Department of Psychology at the University of Zululand, 1997. / This report documents a qualitative description of the special needs
expressed by persons with late stage AIDS in the Richards Bay area. A
phenomenological research design and methods were employed to impose
rigour on this event.
Once the needs of persons with late stage AIDS had been made explicit,
these were collated with services rendered or planned through state and
welfare structures in the Richards Bay area in an effort to identify salient
unfulfilled needs that could be addressed through the establishment of an
AIDS Care Centre. This provided important cues regarding the types of
services and facilities required at the AIDS Care Centre. Additionally the
unstructured interviews employed in the research provided the interviewees
with an opportunity to suggest a format of care at the AIDS Care Centre that
would be most suitable for them.

Psychological Mirroring in Tana French's In the Woods and The LikenessGott-Helton, Sarah Meghan 12 1900 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Tana French’s work has been the subject of a number of recent scholars.
Scholarship on French ranges from theories of liminality, to meditations on how French’s
work explores the “Celtic Tiger” phenomenon in Ireland, to looking at her stories as new
takes on old fairy tales. French’s work straddles the line between popular detective fiction
and literary fiction, upending popular tropes and creating something wholly new.
One issue that has not been explored is how French’s work fits into a Lacanian
framework. The six novels in her Dublin Murder Squad detective stories are rife with
issues of psychological mirroring, or doubling. As such, they take the typical mystery
trope of pairing a detective with a case that alters and reflects back their own
psychological traumas, and takes them to a new level.
This work will address issues of French’s characters and how they fit into the
theories of Lacan’s Mirror Stage, as well as the “Real,” “Symbolic,” and “Imaginary”
realms that we human beings unconsciously construct for ourselves. This writing
examines the first two novels of the series, In the Woods, and The Likeness, and analyzes
them in light of these theories, showing how mirroring exists in nearly every aspect of
each text.
