HW/SW Partitioning and Pipelined Scheduling Using Integer Linear Programming

Chen, Chin-Yang 01 August 2005 (has links)
The primary design goal of many embedded systems for multimedia applications is usually meeting the performance requirement at a minimum cost. In this thesis, we proposed two different ILP based approaches for hardware/software (HW/SW) partitioning and pipelined scheduling of embedded systems for multimedia applications. One ILP approach solves the HW/SW partitioning and pipelined scheduling problem simultaneously. Another ILP approach separates the HW/SW partitioning and pipelined scheduling problem into two phases. The first phase is focusing on the HW/SW partitioning and mapping problem. Second phase is used to solve the pipelined scheduling problem. The two ILP approaches not only partition and map each computation task of a particular multimedia application onto a component of the heterogeneous multiprocessor architecture, but also schedules and pipelines the execution of these computation tasks while considering communication time. For the first ILP model, the objective is to minimize the total component cost and the number of pipeline stages subject to the throughput constraint. In the second ILP approach, the objective of the first phase and second phase is to minimize the total component cost and the number of pipeline stages subject to the throughput constraint, respectively. Finally, experiments on three real multimedia applications (JPEG Encoder, MP3 Decoder, Wavelet Video Encoder) are used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approaches.

The application of automated mineralogy to the provenance study of red-bed successions : a case study from the Permo-Triassic of SW England

McVicar Wright, Sarita Eleanor January 2014 (has links)
This thesis reviews heavy mineral separation techniques for red-bed heavy mineral provenance studies. It demonstrates the effectiveness of automated mineralogy for mineral comparisons and targeted mineral analysis, resulting in new provenance history conclusions for the Permo-Triassic of SW England. The methodology was developed to remove iron-oxide coatings from grains and provide optimal separation of heavy mineral concentrates in comparison to hydroseparation and panning. Step-wise methodology iterations were validated at each stage using the QEMSCAN (Quantitative Evaluation of Minerals by SCANing electron microscopy). The QEMSCAN works in a similar way to the SEM (scanning electron microscope) and electron-microprobe. Four EDS (energy dispersive spectroscopy) detectors measured X-rays, secondary electrons and back-scattered electrons from the sample. The software allocated these to defined geochemical SIP (species identification protocol) categories. The SIP was back-validated using the electron-microprobe, XRD (X-ray diffraction), microscopy and SEM. QEMSCAN was the primary analysis technique. The results included false colour mineral maps and semi-quantitative statistics for the SIP categories. This enabled targeted mineral analysis with supporting techniques. The methodology was applied to the Permo-Triassic of SW England. The QEMSCAN was able to pick up small scale and large scale heavy mineral provenance trends. Case study 1 showed regional heavy mineral trends and allowed lithological correlation of outliers. Case study 2 used heavy minerals to confirm contemporaneous structural evolution and the base of the Upper Permian in South Devon. Case study 3 allowed a re-evaluation of the base Triassic. Case study 4 targeted biotite minerals at Corbyn's Head. Case study 5 reviewed local vertical and horizontal trends in comparison to regional trends. This has significant oil and gas exploration implications as it gives confidence in correlating deposits over 10s km and can be applied to North Sea barren red-beds. Finally, some mineral firsts, including rammelsbergite and a topaz rhyolite were identified.

HW/SW Codesign for the Xilinx Zynq Platform / HW/SW Codesign for the Xilinx Zynq Platform

Viktorin, Jan January 2013 (has links)
This work describes a novel approach of HW/SW codesign on the Xilinx Zynq and similar platforms. It deals with interconnections between the Processing System (ARM Cortex-A9 MPCore) and the Programmable Logic (FPGA) to find an abstract and universal way to develop applications that are partially offloaded into the programmable hardware and that run in the Linux operating system. For that purpose a framework for HW/SW codesign on the Zynq and similar platforms is designed. No such framework is currently available.

Checking in on the channel

Hunter, Brian E. 20 October 2005 (has links)
The urban redevelopment of the last fifty years reshaped the entire Southwest quadrant (and much of the adjoining Southeast) of Washington, DC. By using a Modernist tabula rasa approach in their remaking, the architects of the redevelopment obliterated the quadrant's historical context, and left the Southwest without much of a discernible identity, other than a stylistic one. While it may be too late to recreate the neighborhood quality of old in this part of the city, it is possible to give it some sort of iconic structure which will be the first step in establishing a new identity for the area. A grand hotel along the Washington Channel could serve as the catalyst for such a change while providing service to the city. Such a hotel would take advantage of its location by allowing for access to the city by water, essentially serving as a point of arrival to Washington, similar to the way Union Station and National Airport serve travelers. The hotel would also cater to the transitory business and government populations of the city through an innovative room design. The end result would be the turning of a corner as the Southwest would once again redevelop itself, but this time with a more favorable outcome. / Master of Architecture

Among diseases affecting tomato production, the ones caused by viruses are of the utmost importance, which are more difficult to control, highlighting those caused by species of the genus Tospovirus, which can cause losses of up to 100 %. The tospoviruses are responsible for the disease known as 'tomato spotted wilt' and are transmitted by thrips. In Brazil, four species of tospoviruses occur in tomato: Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV), Tomato chlorotic spot virus (TCSV), Groundnut ringspot virus (GRSV) and Chrysanthemum stem necrosis virus (CSNV), with a greater incidence of GRSV. The first TSWV resistance gene identified was the Sw-5, which is effective against all species of tospoviruses infecting tomato and is widely used in breeding programs for this reason, because the resistance gene presents a dominant trait. Sources of resistance were found in other wild accessions of the species S. chilense, S. habrochaites, S. pimpinellifolium, S. corneliomuelleri and S. lycopersicum, showing promising results as sources of resistance for use in breeding programs. To identify a source of tospovirus resistance in wild accessions of the Germplasm Bank of Embrapa Hortaliças, and to perform the evolutionary analysis of the Sw-5 gene through the phylogeny of wild accessions, grouping them into evolutionary groups, this work was realized. The wild accessions of S. chilense and S. habrochaites species that showed compatible type of bands with resistance, can provide differentiated alleles of the resistance source based in S. peruvianum, since they grouped in other branches of the phylogenetic tree, with the potential to contribute with maintenance of resistance conferred by SW-5. The species of Potyvirus, Potato virus Y (PVY) and Pepper yellow mosaic virus (PepYMV), have been reported causing severe damage (qualitative and quantitative) to the production of tomatoes for their various purposes. Symptomatic plants have whitening ribs, mottling and leaf distortion when infected by PVY, and necrotic spots that may progress to death of the plant when infected by PepYMV. Because of the recessive characteristic of the typical resistance to potyvirus, the search for new species that confer genetic resistance to this genus occurring in tomato is important. The pot-1 gene, which confers resistance to potyviroses in tomato is governed by a restriction mechanism of cell-to-cell movement of the capsid protein, which prevents viral accumulation in tissues. Sources of resistance have been reported in wild Solanum species in S. peruavianum, S. chilense, S. pimpinellifolium and S. habrochaites, but it is necessary to evaluate the inheritance of this resistance, since the reported resistance is conferred by a monogenic recessive gene. This study aimed to identify in wild species accessions of the Germplasm Bank of Embrapa Hortaliças conferring multiple resistance to PVY and PepYMV, making them candidates for potential sources of resistance for use in breeding programs. Species wild the Germplasm Bank of Embrapa Hortaliças were evaluated for resistance to PVY and PepYMV and identified in accessions of the species S. peruavianum and S. habrochaites via serological analysis (DOT-BLOT) possible sources of resistance.
