In master's thesis was carried out modeling of the characteristics of electromagnetic compatibility of electronic equipment using program CST STUDIO SUITE. In the work have been developed the model of laboratory device for demonstration crosstalk in the cable lines, models of switching power supplies and model of laboratory device for demonstration emission of electromagnetic disturbance based on clock generator. In dissertation have been proposed ways of solving modeling problems and were performed measurements. The thesis consist of 78 pages, including 3 tables, 83 figures and 18 references. / В магистерской диссертации производилось моделирование характеристик электромагнитной совместимости радиоэлектронных средств при помощи пакета программ CST STUDIO SUITE. В процессе работы произведена разработка модели стенда для демонстрации паразитных электромагнитных связей ближнего поля, моделей импульсных источников питания и модели стенда для демонстрации эмиссии индустриальных радиопомех на основе генератора тактовой частоты. Предложены пути решения проблем, возникающих при моделировании, произведены экспериментальные исследования. Диссертация содержит пояснительную записку объемом 78 страниц, включая 3 таблицы, 87 рисунков и список использованных источников из 18 наименований.

Self-Oscillating Unified Linearizing Modulator

The continuous conduction mode (CCM) boost, buck-boost and buck-boost derived pulse-width modulation dc-dc converters suffer from the large-signal control-to-output nonlinearity. Without feedback control, the large-signal control-to-output nonlinearity would lead to output overregulation and even damage the components. The control gain is defined as the ratio of output voltage to control signal. The small-signal control gain is defined as differentiating output voltage with respect to control signal. Feedback control helps to make the output trace the reference signal. A large-signal control-to-output linearity is established. Compared with open loop control, the feedback loop design is complex; and the feedback control might suffer from the instability caused by the negative small-signal control gain, which is due to the loss and parasitic in practice. Except feedback control, open loop linearization methods can also realize the large-signal control-to-output linearity. A modulated-ramp pulse-width modulation generator is introduced in [6]. A current source works as the control signal. A capacitor is charged by the current source, whose voltage works as the carrier and compared with a constant dc bias voltage to determine the duty cycle. When applying this method to boost, buck-boost and buck-boost derived PWM dc-dc converters, a large-signal control-to-output linearity is established. However, the control gain is dependent on the input voltage; it cannot maintain constant when input voltage varies. A feedforward pulse width modulator is introduced in [39] to realize a large-signal control-to-output linearity. The static conversion ratio is divided into numerator and denominator as the functions of duty cycle. An integrator with reset clock signal helps to determine the right timing. The control gain is ideally constant and independent of input voltage. However, the mismatch between the integrator time constant and the switching period would result in a nonlinear control gain, which is dependent on the input voltage. In the thesis work, a self-oscillating unified linearizing modulator is introduced. It first provides a unified procedure to establish a large-signal control-to-output linearity for different pulse-width modulation dc-dc converters. Feedforward is employed to mitigate the impact from line voltage. Self-oscillation is adopted to provide the internal clock signal and to determine the switching frequency. A constant control gain is obtained, independent on the input voltage or the mismatch between clock signals. The modulator is constructed by three simple and standard building blocks. With the considerations of parasitic components and loss, how to design the constant gain, which excludes the negative small-signal control gain within the entire control signal range, is analyzed and discussed. The performance of this self-oscillating unified linearizing modulator is verified by experiments. The impacts from propagation delay in practical components are taken into considerations, which improves the quality of generated signals. Combined with a boost converter, a good large-signal control-to-output linearization is demonstrated. In the future work, the small-signal control-to-output transfer function is first deduced based on the SOUL modulator. Bode plots show the unique characteristic based on the SOUL modulator compared with the conventional modulator. Next, the impacts from this unique characteristic to feedback loop design and dynamic performance are discussed. / Master of Science

MEMS-based fabrication of power electronics components for advanced power converters

Fabrication technology, based on MEMS processes, for constructing components for use in switched-mode power supplies are developed and presented. Capacitors, magnetic cores, and inductors based on sacrificial multilayer electroplating are designed, fabricated, and characterized. Characterization of the produced inductors' core losses at high frequency and high flux is presented, confirming the aptness of the featured microfabrication processes for reducing eddy current losses in magnetic cores. As well, the demonstration of the same inductors in DC/DC converters at high switching frequencies, up to 6 MHz, is presented. Initial work addressing the top-down development of a fully-integrated DC/DC converter is presented. As well, the comprehensive advancement of the central process - sacrificial multilayer electroplating - is presented, including the development of a second-generation automated multilayer electroplating system. The advanced sacrificial multilayer plating process is applied to produce microfabricated capacitors, which achieved in excess of 1.5 nF/mm² capacitance density, The fabrication of highly-laminated magnetic cores and power inductors based on sacrificial multilayer electroplating is presented, along with the design and development of a system for characterizing inductor behavior at high-frequency, high-flux conditions. The design and operation of both buck and boost DC/DC converters, switching at up to 6 MHz, built around these highly-laminated-core inductors are presented.

This thesis deals with the design and construction of a single-phase switching power supply, which is intended for direct resistive heating of iron components. The power supply is especially intended for resistive heating of horse-shoes. The supply is able to deliver an output current of up to 1500 A at a power of up to 2500 W. The first part of this work deals with the design of individual parts of the unit, the second part is focused on construction and testing of the supply and the last part contains technical documentation. The power supply was successfully tested and the required output parameters were met. However some problems do exist, especially with overheating of the output rectifier and with contacting the heated component to the output leads of the supply. These problems will be discussed in the work. The power supply can be used as an alternative solution to classic means of iron heating. The methods and ideas presented in this work can be applied in a design of a similar power supply with high output current, but most of the design rules are valid generally for the given topology.

Integrated, Dynamically Adaptive Supplies for Linear RF Power Amplifiers in Portable Applications

Energy-efficient radio frequency (RF) power amplifiers (PAs) are critical and paramount to achieve longer battery life in state-of-the-art portable systems because they typically determine and dominate the power consumption of such devices. In this dissertation, a high-efficiency, linear RF PA with a dynamically adaptive supply and bias current control for code division multiple access (CDMA) and wideband CDMA (WCDMA) is conceived, simulated, and experimentally demonstrated with a discrete PCB-level design and in integrated circuit (IC) form. The PA efficiency is improved by dynamically adjusting both its supply voltage and bias current, there by minimizing its quiescent power dissipation. The PA supply voltage is derived from the battery by a noninverting, synchronous buck-boost switching regulator because of its flexible functionality and high efficiency. Adjusting the PA supply voltage and bias current by tracking the output power, instead of following the complete envelope in large baseband bandwidth wireless applications, is achieved by a converter with a lower switching frequency and consequently higher light-load efficiency, which translates to prolonged battery life. A discrete PCB-level prototype of the proposed system with 915 MHz center frequency, CDMA IS-95 signal having 27-dBm peak-output power resulted in more than four times improvement in the average efficiency compared to a fixed-supply class-AB PA while meeting the required performance specifications. In the IC solution fabricated in AMIs 0.5-micron CMOS process through MOSIS, a dual-mode, buck-boost converter with pulse-width modulation (PWM) control for high power and pulse-frequency modulation (PFM) for low power is designed and implemented to improve the PA efficiency during active and standby operation, respectively. The performance of the dynamically adaptive supply and bias control IC was validated by realizing a 25-dBm, 1.96 GHz center frequency, WCDMA PA over an input supply range of 1.4 4.2 V. The PA with dual-mode power supply and bias control IC showed an average-efficiency improvement of seven times compared to a fixed-supply class-AB PA, which translates to five times improvement in battery life assuming the PA is active for 2 % of the total time and in standby mode otherwise.

The low voltage generation requires DCDC converters devices with high efficiency, enabling raise and regulate the output voltage. This study analyzes the performance of a photovoltaic panel of Solarex, MSX model 77, configured to generate an open circuit voltage of 10.5 V, with load voltage of 8.5 V, with short circuit current of 9 A and a power of 77 W. The solar panel was assembled in the isolated photovoltaic system configuration, with and without energy storage as an interface with a DCDC converter, Booster topology. The converter was designed and fabricated using SMD (Surface Mounted Devices) technology IC (integrated circuit) that regulates its output voltage at 14.2 V, with an efficiency of 87% and providing the load a maximum power of 20.88 W. The system was installed and instrumented for measurement and acquisition of the following data: luminosities, average global radiation (data of INPE Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais), solar panel and environment temperatures, solar panel and DC-DC converter output voltages, panel, inverter, and battery charge output currents. The photovoltaic system was initially tested in the laboratory (simulating its functioning in ideal conditions of operation) and then subjected to testing in real field conditions. The panel inclination angle was set at 5.5?, consistent with the latitude of Natal city. Factors such as climatic conditions (simultaneous variations of temperature, solar luminosities and ra diation on the panel), values of load resistance, lower limit of the maximum power required by the load (20.88 W) were predominant factors that panel does not operate with energy efficiency levels greater than 5 to 6%. Design methods and considerations of supply modulated switched RF power amplifiers

Abstract This thesis studies the design methods and properties of supply-modulated switch-mode radio frequency power amplifiers. Besides simulation based studies and theory review, two amplifiers were designed: a discrete MESFET class E amplifier (0.5 W at 1 GHz), and an integrated pHEMT class E-1 amplifier (2.0 W at 1.6 GHz) with an on-chip resonator. The existing design methods of the resonant output network of switching amplifiers were reviewed and some extensions on the handling of nonlinear capacitances were proposed. The effects of varying supply voltage were studied and suggestions were given to minimize Vdd / AM and Vdd / PM distortion in supply modulated amplifiers. The implementation of the bias feed was also discussed resulting in proposing a combination of a short transmission line and a small inductor, which provides both fast supply modulation and little effect on harmonic impedances. The main contributions are related to the study of the input impedance of a class E power amplifier, where the effects of supply dependent input impedance and timing skew generated by injected harmonic distortion were analyzed. The stabilization of the amplifier was also discussed. Based on the findings, a push-pull class E amplifier with extra cross-coupled feedback capacitors and second harmonic traps at the gates appears to be a very good starting point for a further study. / Tiivistelmä Tämä väitöstyö käsittelee radiotaajuuksilla toimivien käyttöjännitemoduloitujen kytkintehovahvistimien ominaisuuksia ja suunnittelumenetelmiä. Suunnittelumenetelmiin liittyvän katsauksen ja simulaatioihin perustuvan tutkimusten lisäksi kaksi vahvistinta toteutettiin väitöstutkimuksen aikana: diskreettikomponentein toteutettu E-luokan vahvistin (MESFET, 0.5 W ja 1 GHz) ja integroituna piirinä toteutettu käänteinen E-luokan vahvistin (pHEMT, 2.0 W ja 1.6 GHz), jonka lähdön resonaattoripiiri sisällytettiin integroituun piiriin. Kytkinvahvistimien suunnittelumenetelmiä verrattiin ja kehitettiin edelleen siten, että suunnitteluvaiheessa voidaan ottaa huomioon esim. transistoripiirin takaisinkytkennässä olevan kapasitanssin epälineaarisuus. Työssä tutkittiin myös käyttöjännitemodulaation vaikutusta kytkinvahvistimien toimintaan, ja tutkimuksen tuloksena annettiin muutamia ehdotuksia käyttöjänniteriippuvan amplitudi- (Vdd / AM) ja vaihemodulaation (Vdd / PM) vähentämiseksi. Lähdön biasointipiirin toteutukseen suositeltiin pienen kelan ja siirtolinjan yhdistelmää. Yhdistelmän avulla pyritään maksimoimaan modulaationopeus ja minimoimaan vaikutukset harmonisiin impedansseihin. Pääkohtina väitöksessä ovat E-luokan kytkinvahvistimesta saadut tutkimus- ja mittaushavainnot käyttöjännitteen funktiona muuttuvasta transistorin tuloimpedanssista sekä suurikokoisen transistorin tuloissa tapahtuvan, säröytymisen aiheuttaman tulosignaalien ajoitusvirheen analyysi. Näiden lisäksi vahvistimen stabiilisuuteen kiinnitettiin huomiota. Saatujen havaintojen perusteella voimme todeta, että push-pull -tyyppinen E-luokan vahvistin olisi mielenkiintoinen valinta jatkotutkimuksille.
