Novelizing the Muslim Wars of Conquests: The Christian Pioneers of the Arabic Historical Novel

Leafgren, Luke Anthony January 2012 (has links)
During the Arabic cultural renaissance of the nineteenth century known as the nahda, Christian Arabs made a substantial contribution to the development of fiction and journalism. Among these pioneers, Salim al-Bustani, Jurji Zaydan, and Farah Antun were inspired by translations of European fiction to write the first historical novels in Arabic. Their narrations of the Muslim wars of conquest are carefully constructed blends of history and fiction that emphasize the cultural and religious values that Christian and Muslim Arabs hold in common. In their novels, these authors celebrate the historical achievements of the Arabs and seek to inspire a new sense of Arab cultural identity, open to Christians and Muslims alike and based on shared language, history, territory, values, and aspirations for reform. In this way, these authors respond to the sectarian tensions of their time, European imperialism, and the challenges of modernism with ideas that would become central to Arab nationalist discourse in the twentieth century.

Haji Agus Salim : his role in nationalist movements in Indonesia during the early twentieth century

Kahfi, Erni Haryanti. January 1996 (has links)
Haji Agus Salim (1884--1954) was an Indonesian Muslim political figure of the Nationalist Era (1908--1945). He was influential in two important associations; Sarekat Islam (SI-Islamic Union) and the Jong Islamieten Bond (JIB-Young Muslim Union). Salim was born into religious family and had a Western education. In 1915 when he joined the Sarekat Islam it was at the height of its popularity. Salim became so engrossed with its goals, that he devoted most of his life to it. As such, he was soon able to obtain a high-ranking position in it, and to help formulate the movement's strategies. This thesis presents a number of Salim's positions on politics which show his disagreement and criticism of the Dutch Colonial policy and its effects, as well as his advocacy of an Islamic approach to politics rather than "socialism" as advocated by communist members of the SI. These views aimed at the paramount goal of freeing Indonesia from the Dutch colonialism. His views on "Nationalism" can be gleaned from his exchange of polemics with Sukarno, later president of Indonesia. These polemics portrayed Salim as a nationalist who would not depart from a religious viewpoint. Finally, his involvement with JIB was a continuation of his desire to implement and promote Islamic values among Young Indonesian Muslims of Western education, whom he regarded as the future leaders of the country.

A identidade malufista : bases da proposta politica de Maluf na eleição de 2000 em São Paulo / The malufist identity

Santos, Luiz Fernando Amaral dos 20 February 2006 (has links)
Orientador: Rachel Meneguello / Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Filosofia e Ciencias Humanas / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-06T11:53:05Z (GMT). A partir da análise do discurso de Paulo Maluf (PPB) em 2000 no Horário Gratuito de Propaganda Eleitoral veiculado na TV, mostramos como o discurso malufista é construído através do levantamento de temas ligados à problemática e aos valores sociais gerais levantados pela Nova Direita Brasileira, constituindo assim a associação do discurso malufista a essa corrente política / Abstract: Considering that Paulo Maluf's (PPB) political proposal is based on a wider program within the conservative political realm, its roots within the political scenario in the State of Sao Paulo, especially in São Paulo city, detaches him as an important local and regional leadership, and justifies the presented approach. In 2000, Paulo Maluf is presented in the paulistana electoral campaigns constituting the counterpoint to the political proposal clearly identified to left wing, represented by Workers Party. Despite not presenting a well-defined and strong conservative matrix, the PPB candidate is the most voted representative of a set of conservative proposals, in the political scenario of the paulistana capital. From Paulo Maluf's speech analysis in 2000 in the Gratuitous Time of Electoral Propaganda on TV, we show how the malufista speech is built through a set of issues related to the problems and to the general social values raised by New Brazilian Right Wing, associating malufista speech to this political mainstream / Mestrado / Mestre em Ciência Política

‘Hammatbihi wahammabiha’: fasihi ya Kiswahili na kisa cha Yusuf

H. Samsom, Ridder 14 December 2012 (has links) (PDF)
The story of Joseph (in the Bible), Yusuf (in the Quran), has inspired literatures in many languages. This paper explores how some Swahili writers and translators have dealt with this inspiration, the implications for their language use and the way they have interpreted Yusuf as a theme for their writings. After a brief introduction on the importance of the story itself and putting the focus on a major theme of the plot, the following works are discussed: the new Quran translation by Sh Ali Muhsin (1995), a short novel by Mzee Salim A. Kibao (1975), two short stories by Amur bin Nasur il-Omeiri (1894), the utenzi Qissat-il Yusuf (l913) and Abdulrazak Gurnah\'s English written novel Paradise (1995). The paper concludes with the observation that in analyzing how these Swahili writers have integrated the story of Yusuf in their writings, prose as well as poetry, it becomes clear that attempts in defining what is ‘foreign’ (or ‘Oriental’) and what is ‘indigenous’ (or ‘African’) are bound to fail.
