History of Utah's Salt Industry 1847-1970

Clark, John L. 01 January 1971 (has links) (PDF)
Utah salt makers have extracted salt from three sources, the principal of these being brine from Great Salt Lake. Other sources are saline beds in Great Salt Lake Desert and subterranean halite formations in central Utah. This study traces the development of methods used to recover and refine salt by the industry, in general, and by specific companies. It provides brief, historical sketches of the major corporations and the economic, legal, and environmental factors affecting their growth.Utah produces about 1 per cent of the nation's salt, exporting over half of it from the state. The major factors limiting the growth of the local industry are the lack of population and industrial development in Utah's market area. Transportation rates for a product with low intrinsic value but high in weight determine this area.

Contractor evaluation and selection for projects using the analytic hierarchy process

Frielingsdorf, Klaus 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2002. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Changes in the global salt market have presented Walvis Bay Salt Refiners with an opportunity to increase its current sales by approximately 40%. Following several pre-feasibility studies, the expansion project plan was created. The construction of new ponds, canals and sluices were to be performed by a subcontractor as selected through a tender process. The scope of the work comprised approximately 70% of the total project cost and it also represented the most critical part of the expansion project. Thomas Saaty’s Analytic Hierarchy Process, was used as a group decision support system for the selection of the most suitable subcontractor. The weighted average mean method was used to aggregate individual scores. A sensitivity analysis was performed following the final outcome to gain a deeper understanding of the problem, obtain a measure of margin between subcontractor scores and to check for the correctness of numbers.

A terminologia do sal no RN: uma abordagem socioterminolÃgica / Salt Terminology in RN: a socioterminological approach.

MoisÃs Batista da Silva 05 February 2007 (has links)
The research hereafter presents a study on words used by individuals that work with activities related to salt industry and has the proposal of elaborating a glossary on the terms in that domain. The investigation has been developed in locations such as MossorÃ, Areia Branca and Grossos, cities that make part of Rio Grande do Norte salty region. Our work aims at studying industry terms and salty culture, in written and oral modality, considering the possibility of terminological variation. The work consists, primarily, of a salty industry historical institutional investigation as well as of the entire production process. In this work, different lexical sciences are introduced and their respective theoretical approaches, but the main emphasis is put on Socioterminology theory and its methodological guidelines, considering its importance for this research. After that, the methodological procedures for the socioterminological research are exposed and distributed in two phases: field research and glossary organizational methodology. In sequence, the Glossary of Salty Terminology (GLOSSAL) is presented, composed of 325 terms alphabetically organized, with a systematical remissive index, distributed in four conceptual fields: manufacturing, beneficiatement, trading, utilization and consumption. This corpus investigation is justified by the absence of written works organized and systemized in the salty technological area in the specified cities. This work also contributes to provide the divulgation of a terminographical product destined, not only to specialists in the area and to Lexical Science researchers, but to the public interested in improving their knowledge in salty terminology.

Thereafter the production of sea salt started to be made in a process of continuous flow, where the product is constantly stored in yards, with daily movements in and out of salt. Thus far, the major bottleneck found in this production process is the control of production, because due to the large amount produced and variety of losses existing in the various stages of production there are not a regulated and safe way to control inventories with accuracy and speed demanded. In a typical case with a salt marsh company of Rio Grande do Norte state, salt produced is stored in two open courtyards and inventory control of salt made by carrying input / output relationship of salt in each storage yard. This work developed a conceptual model of inventory control, based on topography, adopting surveys into one of the courtyards of the company. There were 25 biweekly survey measurements over a year book to generate digital models representing the stock. For each measurement, results were compared with the values of inventory accounting provided by the salt marsh in order to identify existing losses and mark out the sales department on the actual stock available at each measurement date. Inventories calculated by the model indicated losses of 6,349 tonnes for the period of one year book and 3,279 tonnes for the period between harvests, when compared to the accounting control / O fortalecimento da ind?stria nacional nos ?ltimos 20 anos exigiu a moderniza??o, mecaniza??o e amplia??o da produ??o salineira.

Primary production and nutrient dynamics in solar salt ponds

Segal, Richard Daniel January 2006 (has links)
[Truncated abstract. Formulae and special characters in this field can only be approximated. See PDF version for accurate reproduction.] Solar salt producers use solar energy to evaporate seawater as it flows through a series of ponds. The Shark Bay Salt solar ponds, at Useless Inlet in Western Australia, vary in salinity from that of seawater to four times seawater, over the pond sequence. Water column photosynthesis and biomass decreased markedly with increasing salinity along the pond sequence, while benthic productivity increased as cyanobacterial mats developed. Correspondingly, net productivity shifted from autotrophy to heterotrophy in the water column and from heterotrophy to autotrophy in the benthos. Both shifts occurred at intermediate salinity in the pond sequence, where there was low production in both the water column and benthos. Within individual ponds, productivity, algal biomass and physico-chemical conditions were relatively constant over the year of study. Transitions between benthic and planktonic production along the pond sequence were driven mostly by direct responses to salinity stress, as well as the formation of a gypsum crust on the pond floors at higher salinity (>120 g kg-1). This transition is similar to that which occurs in saline lakes undergoing anthropogenic salinisation and identifies critical salinities for the restoration of these lakes.

In Brazilian reality, the CSR, understood as enterprise actions, external and/or internal, that contributes to social and ambient improvement, gains greater visibility in 1990 decade. Although the significant increase of theoretical productions about CSR pertinent elements, it is still scarce the studies that treats about the relation company/society in the northeastern reality, and singularly, in Rio Grande do Norte. It was in this perspective, that, in being the salt industry one of most important in the potiguar economic history formation , the present work investigated practicies and perceptions of salt entrepreneurship about CSR. Considering all the Rio Grande do Norte salt industry history phases, since the period of the Brazil s settling, as well as the characteristics of the study object, was opted to the qualitative research, objectified in interviews half-structuralized realized with the salt segment entrepreneurs, as well as professionals of ambient management and human resources working in potiguar salt segment. The research main results indicated a coexistence between the mechanisms of management seated on personal and paternalists relations, typical of traditional salt industry, and the emergency of innovative elements typical of the modern management, like the CSR. In this context, a tension between continuity and rupture with the traditional mechanisms of management in salt entrepreneurship actions / O debate em torno da tem?tica da Responsabilidade Social Empresarial RSE envolve aspectos econ?micos, sociais, culturais e simb?licos presentes nas rela??es estabelecidas entre empresa e sociedade.
