For this, firstly, we show the study of the categories of narrative, and also the recurrent use of allegory and irony, observing the concepts of the postmodern novel, by the critical point-of-view of Hutcheon (1991). After that, we will develop an analytical reading from the theoretical perspective of intertextuality, based on the theories of Kristeva (1974), Bakhtin (1981, 1988) and Jenny (1979), and study the intertextual dialogue developed in the novel as well, because we believe that all these aspects together contribute to form the intercultural relations presented in the book. We highlight the landscape of Spain in the novel as part of the use of the concept of Iberianism, by Saramago. The cultural aspects from the Iberian Peninsula are highlighted as a way to provide a depth critics analysis and also for bringing a reflection on how A jangada de pedra comes to questions concerning the cultural identity

The aim of this work is to compare the construction of meanings assigned by critics and common readers to the book Ensaio sobre a Cegueira written by Jose Saramago, under the perspective of Cognitive Linguistics associated to the context, in some of its manifestations, with the theoretical base provided by Gilles Fauconnier (1997, 2002), Mark Turner (1987, 1996), Koch (2002(a) e 2002(b), 2001) and Marcuschi (2007 (a), 2007(b)). At the beginning, the theory about a text not having an inherent meaning, but being built in the mind of the one who utters it from its indicators is discussed. Following, we analyze the meaning assigned to three Brazilian literary critics, after comparing them with the meanings proposed by common readers who have university level. In order to have larger control over this process, we considered the meanings assigned to fundamental images of the text, from the ideas projection proposals from Lakoff & Johnson (1980) as a base, evolving, when necessary, the image schemes theory which was also initially proposed by Lakoff (1987) and categorization.

This work aims at studying the novel genre, analyzing it from the perspective of essay genre, in other words, novel seen as a space that enables the development of essay genre, following narrative and fiction view. In order to do this research, it was used as the work main corpus the following works: Manual of Painting and Calligraphy (1977) and The year of Ricardo Reis‟death (1984), both written by the contemporary Portuguese writer José Saramago. The reflection about the discussion essay fictionalized in the novel develops itself in the following way: at first, it is tried to investigate the embryonic existence of the essay discussion in José Saramago‟s novelistic trajectory, highlighting Montaigne‟s influences in his work. At a later time, a second moment is dedicated to knowledge and systematization of theory about essay genre, approaching the main researchers about the subject, searching for references about the essay since Michael de Montaigne. At last, to continue the research, it was necessary to approach these two novels that make part of the work corpus, trying to demonstrate how the critical essay fictionalized in each one of them occurs, emphasizing how occurs the discussion about the literary making and the artistic making by the means of metalanguage, intertextuality, getting to a critical essay written by the means of narrative fiction

Lourenço, Diana Almeida January 2015 (has links)
Uma literatura In nomine hominis. / Abstract: In The Gospel According to Jesus Christ, José Saramago aims to recount the best known history of Western society: the life of Christ. It created a parody of the canonical Gospels and a critique is built not only the Church, but the whole Christian tradition. Although the religious parody being one of crucials points of the narrative, our research turns to what many critics believe is the great message masterpiece of José Saramago: the valuation of mankind. Literary criticism that was dedicated to the book believes that Saramago narrative tends to be subversive, challenging concepts and stating explicitly atheistic views, as well as a heightened appreciation of the human being. A literature In nomine hominis. The objective of the research is to discuss the idea of a "radical humanism" in the Gospel, and raise the hypothesis of a conception of mankind, built through the organization of language. Key-words: Saramago, mankind, gospel.

Sobre a angústia, são centrais as obras de três pensadores: Kierkegaard, Freud e Lacan (além de obras de intepretação da arte a partir destes mesmo autores) / By thinking about the artistic representation specificity of the contemporary novelistic fiction, we understand that there is a new attitude towards what reality and its possibilities of gaining an outline through language would be. Thus, this research aims at articulating the mimesis that is undertaken by contemporary novel and the narrator's behavior. Therefore, a questioning occurs - which is, many times, a linguistic one - about the reality created by diegesis. The narrator promotes a bordering more than filling the meaning, which led us to the idea that the narration of the contemporary novel is structured as anguish. So, we believe that the narrator is the central narrative element for us to access the construction of the reality presented by the contemporary novelistic fiction. In view of that, we have chosen anguish as an affection mostly present inside this novel, not only as a theme, but also as component of the diegetic structure. Given this situation, we have chosen two novels by Saramago that belong to different phases of the writer's work, História do Cerco de Lisboa and Ensaio sobre a cegueira - as an exercise of analysis within the previously described proposal. Finally, this research seeks not only to contribute with studies about the contemporary novel, but also about the functioning of the narrator in face of the task of representing a reality. To what concerns methodology, the work of Luiz Costa Lima is essential to our study about mimesis, mainly because of the diachronic trajectory he proposes at the same time he reviews his own postulations about the issue. The work of Genette is the basis that allowed us to evolve in our studies regarding the narrator. In relation to anguish, the work of three thinkers is central to us: Kierkegaard, Freud and Lacan (besides works about art interpretation by the same authors)

Alegorias do mundo de Saramago

Röhrig, Maiquel January 2011 (has links)
This work of comparative literature presents an interpretative reading of Blindness (1995), The Cave (2000) and Seeing (2004) from an interdisciplinary perspective supported by the dialogue between literature and philosophy. The objective is to analyze how the fiction of Saramago rewrites Plato’s Allegory of the cave. To this end, I propose an allegorical, intertextual and interdisciplinary reading. The analytical work takes as reference F. Jameson (1992), W.Benjamin (1984) and I. Mészáros (2002), and focuses on aspects of the narrative such as sequences, causality and characters to identify its functions and its convergence on the level of allegorical meaning. I consider the novels metonymies of the real, and I intend to show how Saramago´s fiction engages with the historical present, in which capitalism rules the individuals’ life and the life of the social institutions through its practices of production, its material basis and its ideology. Intertextuality is the textual operator that guided the reading, and interdisciplinarity a key aspect of its methodology. In the allegory created by Saramago, the issue of blindness places female characters in a very special position. So, I´ve introduced the category of gender to highlight not so much the social construction of male and female characters but the different meanings attributed to them and which charge the feminine with positivity, empowering female characters to project values that resignify the human.
