Seasonal phenology and reproductive behaviour of Dioryctria species Zeller (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) in British Columbian seed orchards

Whitehouse, Caroline Marie 06 1900 (has links)
Seasonal phenology and mating frequency of moths in the genus Dioryctria found sympatrically in north Okanagan Valley, British Columbia seed orchards were assessed. Female moths in the abietella, auranticella, ponderosae and schuetzeella species groups were trapped in Douglas-fir, lodgepole pine and interior spruce stands. Most species were univoltine based on one peak of flight activity per season. There is evidence that the abietella group are bivoltine in this region. Females in the abietella and auranticella groups are polyandrous; ponderosae and schuetzeella females are monandrous. The sole abietella species, D. abietivorella, recorded in British Columbia can have substantial economic impacts on seed production in commercial seed orchards. Factors influencing reproductive behaviour, longevity and fecundity of D. abietivorella were investigated. Females are synovigenic and have an income-breeding mating strategy. Reproductive behaviours are delayed post-eclosion and signalling receptivity by females coincides with egg maturation, increasing with age. Female D. abietivorella experience trade-offs between reproduction and longevity. / Ecology

Tent isolation experiment in an advanced Scots pine seed orchard

Fredriksson, Emelie January 2013 (has links)
Pollen contamination is a severe problem in production breeding programs since it reduces the expected gain. In an attempt to solve this problem Skogforsk created an isolation experiment in the advanced Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) seed orchard Västerhus in Västerbotten, Sweden. This experiment involves covering blocks of trees with a tent during the pollination period so that they only can mate with each other inside. To evaluate the effects of this tent treatment one tree from inside a tent with supplementary mass pollination (SMP) and one tree from the open control were chosen for this study. 48 seeds from each tree were sampled and genotypes at 9 microsatellite (SSR) loci. The likelihood and exclusion methods for paternity assignment were used to establish the fathers to these seeds. The results showed 0% contamination inside the tent and 4-8% outside in the control. The number of fathers contributed to the fertilization of the 48 seeds was 9 inside and 15 outside. The selfing rate was unexpectedly high, 10% inside the tent and 19% outside. The mating system inside the tent need to be further evaluated to fully understand what other effect the treatment has on the future progeny.

Dahlberg, Helena January 2014 (has links)
In this study, pollen contamination (measured by the number of seeds pollinated by pollen not belonging to any of the clones on the seed orchard) is compared between open pollination and isolated pollination environments in a Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) seed orchard called Västerhus, located outside Önsköldsvik. In this seed orchard a tent experiment is taking place. Skogforsk has built six large tents covering 12-14 trees with each tent. Fertilization patterns were compared between one tree in a tent with a supplementation of pollen from five clones not represented in the tent and another tree of the same clone subject to open pollination outside the tents. By using DNA markers the paternity was determined for 48 seeds from each tree. The results show a big difference in pollen contamination between the two trees. The tree inside the tent showed a contamination rate of 0% and the tree from the open pollination had a contamination rate of 20,5%. No difference was found in the numbers of different fathers although the selfing rate of 4,26% was higher in the tent than the selfing rate of 2,56% observed in the open pollination environment. These results match the results of other studies done on the same orchard pretty well and therefore tent isolation with a supplementary pollination can be a good way to reduce unwanted pollen contamination.

Riva, Lara Comar January 2020 (has links)
The objective of the study was to evaluate the silvicultural traits to estimate the genetic parameters in the germplasm banks from natural populations in Bauru-SP and Selvíria-MS, in order to acquire information that allows the formation of improved seed orchards aiming at the quality of the wood. At 31 years of age, the characters total height (ALT), average crown diameter (DMC), diameter at chest height (DAP), stem shape (FOR), basic wood density (DBM), ratio heartwood / sapwood (RC / Ab) and survival (SOB). The REML / BLUP procedure was used via mixed linear models methodology to estimate the components of variance, genetic parameters and estimates of genetic correlations between the characters. For the genetic divergence analyzes, the Genes program was used. The progeny tests of both populations showed genetic variation. The characters referring to wood quality (DBM and RC / Ab) were those with the highest heritability, with about 0,80 and coefficient of genetic variation (16,57% to 70,10%). The genetic correlations showed different results in both populations, with Selvíria being the population with the highest significant positive correlations, allowing the use of direct and indirect selection for both growth and wood quality characters. In the dissimilarity analyzes, the Selvíria population was t... (Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Mestre

The objective of this study was to estimate genetic and statistical parameters for quantitative traits in the first six years of growth of Eucalyptus grandis progenies in the silvipastoril system; to compare productivity, stability and adaptability of progenies at different ages and to measure forage production and morphological and bromatological characteristics of Urochloa decumbens cv. Basilisk in free growth in the understorey of the trees. Height (ALT), diameter at breast height (DAP) and survival (SOB) were measured at 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 years after planting. The experimental design was a randomized block with 150 treatments (147 progenies of Eucalyptus grandis and three commercial clones: C041H , P4295H and H15), 26 replicates and one plant per plot, at a spacing of 2.0 x 2.5 x 4 , 0 m. For evaluation of the grass samples were collected from the area below and between the double lines of E. grandis. In the individual analysis, commercial clones had practically 100% of their individuals among the first 250 classified, progenies 25 and 162 presented a significant number of individuals in this classification. Regarding the classification of the parents, over the years, the clones C041H and H15 always were among the first positions. But progenies 25 and 162 outperformed clone P4295H in ALT, DAP and VOL, with high and positive correlation between the years for ALT and DAP (> 0.74). There was a significant difference between the treatments during the evaluation years for the characters measured. In the joint analysis for stability, adaptability and productivity, progenies 25, 162, 163 and 6 were very close to commercial materials (H15 and C041H) and had greater stability, adaptability and productivity in relation to control clone P4295H for the DAP character. The correlation between the additive and dominance genetic values for the ALT and DAP characters was high (> 0.77). The total dry matter yield (MSM) (645 kg ha-1) of grass and leaves (272 kg ha-1) were significantly higher (p <0.05) in the less shaded areas between the double rows and, Important nutritional values, such as protein fraction and digestibility, do not show large variations between treatments. The results show that it is possible to continue the genetic improvement program with the seed orchard formation by seedlings and second generation test because there are materials with great potential of production in the study site for future crosses and formation of new genotypes of E. grandis.

The success of forest breeding programs requires that the prediction of genetic progress be proportionate to actual genetic progress. As a result, inbreeding in the progenies was higher than in the parental population and the main reason was cross between relatives. In addition, kinship relations were higher in 2GPT. There was pollen flow among the populations and the number of pollen donors was higher by paternity analysis, which allowed to determine the probable candidate father of 713 individuals of the 2GPT. Thus, it was possible to study the open pollinated progeny test as a full sib test, allowing the estimation of general and specific combining abilities. For the diameter at breast height, the genetic gain based on the genotypic value of the cross was high (> 20%), as well as the clonal selection, which indicated considerable gains (> 65%). Thus, it is possible to continue the Breeding Program, indicating promising crosses and genotypes of E. urophylla. / FAPESP: 2014/03407-7
