"To Clear a Rock-Bottom, Low-Density Slum": Using Public Housing Means to Meet Urban Renewal Ends in New Orleans, 1954-1959

Unlike major cities across the country, New Orleans did not have the power to expropriate property to engage in urban renewal projects after 1954. Yet city officials desperately sought to meet the ends of urban renewal, specifically through public claims of slum clearance and private motivation to speed along neighborhood segregation. Hamstrung in their efforts to move forward with taking residents' homes for private redevelopment, the city worked to reach its urban renewal goals by taking property for public works projects, including public housing. The city's decision to build the Guste and Fischer housing projects represents a case study of how officials, including Mayor deLesseps “Chep” Morrison, the City Planning Commission, and the Housing Authority of New Orleans, worked together to create a more racially separate city in the age of Brown v. Board of Education.

Painting the City Red: A Close Look at the Homicide Trends of New Orleans

New Orleans has had a consistently high homicide rate for around twenty years, but limited research has committed to discovering a successful solution to the pre- and post-Katrina crime problem. Prior research has been conducted to analyze whether the Southern “culture of violence,” poverty, income inequality, unemployment, gun ownership and legislation, gangs, and residential segregation affect homicide, but no study applies these factors to New Orleans. Using a case study analysis that applies these variables studied in prior research to New Orleans and information acquired from the 2010 U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Uniform Crime Reports, correlations are made between homicide in New Orleans and poverty, income inequality, and residential segregation. Implications show that homicide is affected by multiple factors. All of these factors should be analyzed when homicide is the focus of the research because homicide is not a result of one or two variables.

Racism and multiculturalism in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter novels

In this essay, the Harry Potter series will be analyzed in three different sections. I will use African American criticism and Critical Race Theory (CRT) in the discussion of ‘race’ and segregation that occurs between three different groups. This section will explain along what lines the world of Harry Potter is segregated and to what extent. Further, it will contain a case-study of house-elves through the lens of postcolonial criticism, that shows how certain groups are relegated to the status of “subaltern”, what form their oppression take and how they respond to it. I have chosen the elves, who are at the very bottom of the social ladder, because the extent of their oppression has been cut out from movie adaptions, and Rowling herself has liquidated the house-elf plot from the last novels. They provide the clearest example of differentiation between the groups of magical creatures, even though as a group they do not play an important part the series. The main concepts that will be used in this section are the issues of subaltern, mimicry and anticolonialist resistance. Finally, I will look at the novels through a multicultural perspective to see how Rowling has portrayed contemporary multicultural England and how it connects to the racial divisions in the magical world.

Figural properties are prioritized for search under conditions of uncertainty: Setting boundary conditions on claims that figures automatically attract attention

Nelson and Palmer (2007) concluded that figures/figural properties automatically attract attention, after they found that participants were faster to detect/discriminate targets appearing where a portion of a familiar object was suggested in an otherwise ambiguous display. We investigated whether these effects are truly automatic and whether they generalize to another figural property-convexity. We found that Nelson and Palmer's results do generalize to convexity, but only when participants are uncertain regarding when and where the target will appear. Dependence on uncertainty regarding target location/timing was also observed for familiarity. Thus, although we could replicate and extend Nelson and Palmer's results, our experiments showed that figures do not automatically draw attention. In addition, our research went beyond Nelson and Palmer's, in that we were able to separate figural properties from perceived figures. Because figural properties are regularities that predict where objects lie in the visual field, our results join other evidence that regularities in the environment can attract attention. More generally, our results are consistent with Bayesian theories in which priors are given more weight under conditions of uncertainty.

This essay is based on an interest in how certain residential areas are portrayed in the public debate as "problem areas" which allows other to stigmatization these neighborhoods with negative prejudices. The residential area Ersboda is one of the major residential area in the Swedish town Umeå, that can stand as an example of this phenomenon.  The unique with the residential area Ersboda is that the area don’t have much problem compare to other areas and it therefore interesting to ask why the residential area Ersboda are stamped with negative prejudices? The purpose of this essay is therefore to create an understanding why and how the residential area Ersboda in Umeå are stigmatised by the surroundings. The essay aims to answer the following questions: • When did the stigmatization of the residential area Ersboda begin? • How does the stigmatization of the residential area Ersboda manifest itself? • What could be the underlying factors for the stigmatization of Ersboda? In this study, qualitative interviews have been conducted with residents and working people in the residential area Ersboda. The result showed that one contributing reasons why Ersboda and its inhabitants become stigmatized is that there is a relatively large influx of immigrants in the 1990s. The second factor is based on the violent disturbances among a small part of the area's young residents during the same time period. The reason why Ersboda still are stigmatized depends possibly not only on the surrounding prejudices about the area's ethnic inhabitans and the media's negative reports. The underlying factor can be due to a power difference between established (the surrounding) and outsiders (those living and working on Ersboda). The conclusion is therefore that the stigma of Ersboda not depend on the number of problems, but rather on the basis that it has established a power relationship between "us" and "them" and where residents lack the means of power to break the stigmatization.

[pt] Este trabalho aborda o tema da educação pública brasileira após seu processo de massificação. Partindo da hipótese de que as escolas públicas são produtoras de segregação urbana, nossos objetivos são: refletir sobre o lugar que a instituição escolar ocupa no projeto de vida de famílias populares moradoras de favelas e periferias; e, investigar qual o grau de participação dos responsáveis no processo de escolarização de seus filhos. Para isso, utilizou-se alguns dos dados produzidos por um survey realizado em 2010 junto a pais e responsáveis por estudantes de escolas públicas moradores de favelas da Zona Sul do Rio de Janeiro. Nossas conclusões apontam que a escola é uma parte importante no cotidiano das famílias populares que valorizam o saber escolar e demonstram grande interesse em participar das atividades escolares. Sua importância é percebida pelos pais e responsáveis não só em relação à questão da mobilidade social como também em sua dimensão socializadora na formação de cidadãos de modo que tenham acesso à diversidade cultural presente na cidade. Tais conclusões nos levam a refletir sobre os diferentes aspectos que incidem sobre a relação da escola com a família, e de como eles têm contribuído para fragilizar o papel institucional da escola. / [en] This work addresses the issue of public education in Brazil after his process of massification. Assuming that public schools are producing urban segregation, ours aims are: to reflect on the place the institution occupies in the school project of life of families living in slums and popular neighborhoods; and, investigate what degree of participation of practitioners in the process of schooling of their children. For this, it was used a few data from the survey conducted in 2010 with parents and responsible for public school students residing in slums of the South Zone of Rio de Janeiro. Our findings indicate that the school is an important part in the ordinary life of families who value popular school knowledge and show great interest in participating in school activities. Its importance is noted by parents and responsible not only on the issue of social mobility but also in their size socializing in the formation of citizens so having access to cultural diversity in this city. These findings lead us to reflect on the different aspects that concern the relationship between school and family, and how they have contributed to weaken the institutional role of the school.

Modeling Granular Material Mixing and Segregation Using a Finite Element Method and Advection-Diffusion-Segregation Equation Multi-Scale Model

<p></p><p>Granular material blending plays an important role in many industries ranging from those that manufacture pharmaceuticals to those producing agrochemicals. The ability to create homogeneous powder blends can be critical to the final product quality. For example, insufficient blending of a pharmaceutical formulation may have serious consequences on product efficacy and safety. Unfortunately, tools for quantitatively predicting particulate blending processes are lacking. Most often, parameters that produce an acceptable degree of blending are determined empirically.</p> <p> </p> <p>The objective of this work was to develop a validated model for predicting the magnitude and rate of granular material mixing and segregation for binary mixtures of granular material in systems of industrial interest. The model utilizes finite element method simulations to determine the bulk-level granular velocity field, which is then combined with particle-level diffusion and segregation correlations using the advection-diffusion-segregation equation. </p> <p> </p> <p>An important factor to the success of the finite element method simulation used in the current work is the material constitutive model used to represent the granular flow behavior. In this work, the Mohr-Coulomb elastoplastic (MCEP) model was used. The MCEP model parameters were calibrated both numerically and experimentally and the procedure is described in the current work. Additionally, the particle-level diffusion and segregation correlations are important to the accurate prediction of mixing and segregation rates. The current work derived the diffusion and segregation correlations from published literature and determined a methodology for obtaining the particle diffusion and segregation parameters from experiments.</p> <p> </p> <p>The utility of this modelling approach is demonstrated by predicting mixing patterns in a rotating drum and Tote blender as well as segregation patterns in a rotating drum and during the discharge of conical hoppers. Indeed, a significant advantage of the current modeling approach compared to previously published models is that arbitrary system geometries can be modeled.</p> <p> </p> <p>The model predictions were compared with both DEM simulation and experiment results. The model is able to quantitatively predict the magnitude and rate of powder mixing and segregation in two- and three-dimensional geometries and is computationally faster than DEM simulations. Since the numerical approach does not directly model individual particles, this new modeling approach is well suited for predicting mixing and segregation in large industrial-scale systems.</p><br><p></p>

Neighborhood Contexts, Identity-relevant Stressors, and Health

Thesis advisor: David Takeo Takeuchi / Racism is a persistent and pervasive social problem embedded throughout U.S. society. Previous research has established that racism, particularly racial discrimination, is a strong risk factor of various health statuses among racial/ethnic minorities, but the contexts that modify the health burden of racial discrimination are less understood. This dissertation aims to investigate how race-related micro- and meso- level contexts modifies the link between racial discrimination and health. In addition, I pay attention to the moderating role of nativity status to address the potential differences in individuals’ perception on American racial/ethnic categorizations and experiences of racial discrimination. On the micro level, I focus on racial/ethnic identity given that it is particularly important cultural group membership status for many racial/ethnic minorities whose identities are rooted in collectivistic cultures. I test the identity-relevant stressor hypothesis which argues that stressful events can be particularly detrimental based on its pertinence to the valued identities of individuals. On the meso level, I pay attention to racial residential segregation, which has been identified as the hallmark of U.S. urban areas and the fundamental cause of racial/ethnic health disparities. This three-paper dissertation utilizes multiple existing population-based data sources. The first and second papers use data from the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions-III (NESARC-III). The third paper uses data from the 2000 U.S. Census and the National Latino and Asian American Study (NLAAS). Several analytical strategies, including binary logistic regression, heterogeneous choice models, and nested logistic regression, are employed. Taken together, the present dissertation underscores great complexity in the link between race and health. Through the course of three studies, I show that the dynamics between race-related stressors and health status are not uniform, and should be understood in the realm of individuals’ social identity and their neighborhood environment. Specifically, the findings of this study contribute to expanding stress theory in the context of identity-relevance and living environments. Resegregation: the impact on education

This qualitative study examined the impact and implications of resegregation on students of color by capturing and analyzing the lived experiences of school principals leading high poverty and low poverty schools where resegregation was occurring. Despite the growing concern for resegregation, little has been down to reverse the adverse affects of this phenomenon. The body of research that has explored the essence of resegregation has in small volumes acknowledged the perception of school principals. A much clearer portrait of the impact resegregation was having on schools as perceived by school principals offered an in-depth understanding of the way in which policy and practices affect schools undergoing resegregation. Hence, this study used the hermeneutic phenomenological methodology in an attempt to gain a deeper understanding and meaning of the complex experiences of resegregation from the perspective of school principals. The data was explicated by using Hycner’s (1999) five step process. Neste trabalho, estudamos o crescimento epitaxial por feixe molecular assim como as propriedades ópticas e estruturais de camadas de InGaAs depositadas sobre substratos de GaAs(001) com diferentes ângulos e direções de corte. Um ênfase foi dada à investigação da segregação dos átomos de Índio que modifica consideravelmente o perfil de potencial das heteroestruturas e influencia as características dos dispositivos contendo este tipo de camadas. Um novo método experimental baseado em medidas de difração de elétrons de alta energia (RHEED) possibilitou a determinação in situ e em tempo real do coeficiente de segregação dos átomos de Índio e, conseqüentemente, do perfil de composição das camadas de InGaAs. Medidas de raios X e de fotoluminescência em baixa temperatura foram realizadas em amostras de poços quânticos de InGaAs e confirmaram, a posteriori, os resultados obtidos pela técnica RHEED. Foi também demonstrado que o uso de substratos desorientados podia reduzir levemente o efeito de segregação e melhorar as propriedades ópticas das camadas em baixa temperatura. / In this work, we investigated the molecular-beam-epitaxy growth as well as the optical and structural properties of InGaAs layers deposited on top of GaAs (001) substrates with different miscut angles and directions. We emphasized the investigation of the segregation of In atoms that considerably modifies the potential profile of the heterostructures and influences the characteristics of the devices based on this type of layers. A new experimental method involving the diffraction of high-energy electrons (RHEED) allowed the in-situ and real-time determination of the segregation coefficient of the In atoms and, consequently, of the compositional profile of the InGaAs layers. X-rays and low-temperature photoluminescence measurements were carried out InGaAs quantum wells and confirmed, a posterior, the results obtained by the RHEED method. It was also demonstrated that the use of vicinal substrates slight reduces the segregation effect and improves the optical properties of the layers at low temperature.
