Imagery, Self-Concept, Anxiety, and Stress as Predictors of Seriousness of Disease

Harris, Jerry Lon 05 1900 (has links)
This research study was designed to investigate the relationships of imagery, self-concept, anxiety, stress, subjective stress and seriousness of illness and to determine the potential of certain cognitive mediating variables, especially imagery and an interaction between self-concept and imagery, to significantly increase the efficiency of stress as a predictor of seriousness of illness. The purposes of this study were: (1) to determine the efficiency of stress as a predictor of disease, (2) to determine if cognitive mediating variables will significantly increase the predictive efficiency between stress and disease, (3) to investigate selected correlations among the variables, (4) to provide a research base for current treatment procedures using imagery treating various illnesses.

Ověření programu s dobrodružnými a kooperativními prvky na základní škole v podmínkách školní TV / Validation of an adventure programme with cooperative elements in school p.e. lessons

Frainšic, Michal January 2015 (has links)
Validation of an adventure programme with cooperative elements in school P.E. lessons Summary of the thesis The thesis deals with validating an innovative motor program with adventure and cooperative elements at a Czech elementary school. The aims of the thesis was to observe possible changes under the influence of the programme in social acceptance of children in class, in their self-concept and the amount of physical activities in their leisure time. The study was a quasi-experiment, concretely a cross classification with repeated testing. It was realized in classes of 6th , 7th and 8th grade (12-14 year old boys) (N=154) in physical education lessons. The research was realized during 6 month, intervention time was 3 months and data were gained in three time intervals. We have used the Social acceptance questionnaire and Self-concept and quality of life questionnaire as main research methods. Results brought two statistically significant values, however, in practical significance they explain a small number of results. Values in the sub-scale Pupil-classmates relationship were statistically significant (p=0,031), which explained 3% of results, and values in the item Evaluation of satisfaction with factors effecting self-concept had the statistical significance p=0,002 explaining 6,5% of results. Genderové aspekty body image a nespokojenosti s vlastním tělem u neklinické populace / Gender aspects of body image and body dissatisfaction in nonclinical population

Procházková, Jana January 2018 (has links)
This thesis deals with the topic of body image and bodily dissatisfaction with non-clinical population with a focus on gender aspects. It has two main parts - theoretical and empirical. The theoretical part focuses on the term body image as a psychological concept that is a component of self-concept. For that reason, there is a definition of the overall self-concept and the difference between the real self and the ideal self. This part of the thesis stresses out the theoretical basis of the term. An important part is a chapter describing factors influencing a development of the bodily self-concept that influences the development and extent of bodily dissatisfaction. I talk about the current western society and its high standards on a physical appearance for both men and women. The thesis then deals with possible consequences of this dissatisfaction on human behavior, again with respect to the gender differences. The thesis also mentions human sexuality that is related to one's relationship with their own body. In the end of the theoretical part there are some possibilities for measuring body image and bodily dissatisfaction outlined. The empirical part consists of a quantitative study called " Gender aspects of Body image and body dissatisfaction in nonclinical population", just like the whole...

Les immigrés maghrébins à l'épreuve du vieillissement : Concept de soi et qualité de vie / North African immigrants to the test of Ageing : self-concept and quality of life

Boudouda, Nedjem Eddine 03 June 2013 (has links)
How does the North African immigrant perceive his retirement; how does he describe and explain his quality of life; and what function does the cultural structure play in the self-perceptions of aging? These are some questions that have guided our work, whose aimed to study the self-concept and the quality of life of North African immigrants to the test of ageing. As far as we know, and after consulting the database Sudoc (http://www.sudoc.abes.fr) and the National Index of Theses (www.theses.fr/), it is about one of the fewest studies in psychology dealing with this issue. Our thesis consists of two parts: a theoretical part and an empirical part. In the first one we presented various theories and conceptual references related to immigration, otherness, personality and ageing. Then we discussed the self-concept through its conscious (introspective) and self-reported dimension, which evaluates the subjective and experiential aspects of the self-perceptions (L'Ecuyer, 1994). Another major aspect discussed was the theoretical arrangements on indicators and the properties of the internal and external quality of life. The second part, presents two comparative studies. The first focused on the exploration of the GSP method (Genesis self-perceptions; L'Ecuyer, 1994) as a model of self-description, in which we tried to introduce the cultural dimension. This study targeted three groups of participants (North Africans immigrants, French, and North Africans residents of the home country). The second study included measures of the quality of life in relation to self-concept via a questionnaire administrated to both North Africans immigrants and native-born French elderly. This comparative study allowed us to assess how these old people adapt to their living conditions. It was used to compare the two groups in the light of life satisfaction, locus of control, the social and emotional loneliness, marital satisfaction, and perceived social support. Our results have allowed us to distinguish the differences and the similarities between the participants’ concerning self-concept and quality of life. Finally, we tried in our discussion to explore the role of the cultural system mark on the functioning inter-, intra-and trans-subjective.

Self-other overlap and its relationship to perspective taking: Underlying mechanisms and implications

Myers, Michael William, 1979- 09 1900 (has links)
xv, 103 p. : ill. A print copy of this thesis is available through the UO Libraries. Search the library catalog for the location and call number. / While research has extensively documented the inter- and intra-personal consequences of perspective taking, less is known about the mechanisms that underlie this process. Recent research has explored self-other overlap as a mediator of perspective taking on various pro-social outcomes, such as helping and decreased stereotyping. Results have been mixed, perhaps due to the use of different methodologies and scales that actually measure different facets of self-other overlap. This dissertation investigates the structure of self-other overlap and examines how perspective taking may affect only certain facets of self-other overlap, as well as the direction in which this overlap occurs. To test the conceptual equivalence of different overlap measures, in Study 1, participants completed several previously used measures of overlap for two targets: their best friend and an acquaintance. Factor analyses revealed two distinct factors of self-other overlap-- perceived closeness and attribute overlap --although small variations emerged depending on target. These two factors had unique associations with several relationship quality and individual difference measures. Study 2 extended these results by manipulating perspective taking with a stranger. Results replicated the same factor structure from Study 1, and found that perspective taking had different effects on the two factors. Study 3 examined whether or not perspective taking affected the direction of self-other overlap by changing one's attitudes and beliefs to become more like the other person. Results supported a model in which perceived closeness predicted belief change toward the target person, even after accounting for other related consequences of perspective taking such as empathy and positive attitudes. Together, these results suggest that self-other overlap is a multi-dimensional construct associated with different psychological responses. These results are discussed in connection with the relationship between self-other overlap and perspective taking and how this may lead to "self-expansion." / Committee in charge: Sara Hodges, Chairperson, Psychology; Sanjay Srivastava, Member, Psychology; Marjorie Taylor, Member, Psychology; John Lysaker, Outside Member, Philosophy

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of abdominoplasty is to restore the contour of the abdomen. The aim of this study is to evaluate the body image, self-esteem and quality of life in patients who were undergone abdominoplasty. METHODS: Forty female, aged between 25 and 60, BMI between 19 and 30kg/m2, with abdominal deformities types III and A as classified by NAHAS were divided into two groups: Study Group with 25 patients who were undergone abdominoplasty, and Control Group with 15 patients, without surgical intervention. Three questionnaires were applied: the BSQ, Self-esteem Scale ROSENBERG/UNIFESP-EPM, and SF-36 during the pre and postoperative period from one to six months (Study Group); and in the preoperative and after six months (Control Group). RESULTS: The study was completed with 39 patients. In the Study Group (24 patients), abdominoplasty had a positive impact in the first post-operative month, and at the sixth postoperative month. There was statistically significant difference in the total values and in the subscales (BSQ), in the self-esteem (ROSENBERG/UNIFESP-EPM) and in the mental health aspect domains (SF-36). Physical, emotional roles and vitality domains (SF-36) showed statistically significant difference only in the first postoperative month. All other dimensions showed no statistically significant differences. The Control Group did not show statistical significance in all the BSQ, self-esteem (ROSENBERG/UNIFESP-EPM), and SF-36 domains, except in the vitality domain. There was no statistically significant difference in any of the domains, when both groups were compared after the period of six months, except for the comparative perception of the body image subscale (BSQ). CONCLUSION: Abdominoplasty improved body image, self-esteem and mental health.

Účinky specifických poruch učení na self-koncept a sociometrickou pozici dítěte ve třídě (práce je součástí rozsáhlejšího výzkumného projektu "Morfologické uvědomění u dyslektiků") / Self-concept and sociometrical position in children with learning disabilities

NOVOTNÁ, Lenka January 2012 (has links)
Target od the thesis is to explore the area of social consequences of specific learning disabilities. Specific learning disabilities have undoubtedly impact on academic performance and overall results in the context of school education. Their influence is much wider and we can say that it provides individuals with a specific learning disabilities a negative personal and social consequences. I established the following two hypotheses: I suppose that a group of children with specific learning disabilities will be marked selfconcept lower compared to the control group. I suppose that a group of children with specific learning disabilities will be marked by impaired sociometric position in the classroom compared to the control group. In the theoretical part of the thesis is contained explanations of basic concepts related to learning disabilities. Individual chapters are devoted to specific disorders in general and specifically dyslexia, its causes, incidence, manifestations, and reeducation. The other specific learning disabilities are mentioned in addition to dyslexia. In the second half of the theoretical section, I focus on pupil with dyslexia and his subjective complaints, parents and teachers of pupil with dyslexia, and the consequences of school failure and dyslexia on the individual's life. Practical part of the thesis processes with the research conducted among 24 elementary school students. Research using a variety of test methods for evaluating the impacts and consequences of specific learning disabilities on student self-concept and sociometric position in the classroom. Above 24 pupils were divided into two groups - experimental and control groups, which are compared among themselves.

The purpose of this research was to verify the impact on oral health of teenagers after having participated in a dental program of educational and preventive nature in the first decade of life. In this cross-sectional study took part in teenagers 201 which applied the OHIP-14 form who join the dental program in the period from 1996 to 2002. Were invited to attend along with the father or mother for a dental evaluation, which found application of two questionnaires for the patient. The permanence of the healthy habits targeted for participation in the program. The internal consistency was studied by applying the coefficient alpha- Cronbach. The index OHIP-14 was obtained by additive method. The sample was convenience and the data obtained were analyzed by qualitative method. The demand for dental care was frequent at least once a year for reasons of aesthetics or routine visit. Healthy habits targeted for participation in the program, remained in 50% of respondents. Internal consistency for the OHIP-14 index was good (alpha-Cronbach= 0.79). The average for the OHIP-14 index was 6.68, denoting low impact on the oral health of the adolescents interviewed. It was possible to conclude that it was good the perception that teens had oral health as well as the OHIP-14 index presented good internal consistency, showing to be down the oral health impact on quality of life of adolescents surveyed.
