Nábožensko-politické aspekty kultury mučednictví v Islámské republice Írán / Religous-political Aspects of Culture of Martyrdom in the Islamic Republic of IranČech, Libor January 2012 (has links)
The presented doctoral thesis examines character and significance of the culture of martyrdom (farhang-e shahadat) in contemporary Iranian society with a particular emphasis on delimitation religious-political dimension of this phenomenon and determination of causes and implications of relatively recent reinterpretation which has radically shifted this culture from the religious-spiritual sphere to the political-ideological and even revolutionary. On the one hand, the thesis deals with a complex view of mechanism and manners of the utilization of the Karbala paradigm as the instrument for formulation of politically (and otherwise) motivated aims by different spectres of power structures of the ruling establishment and diverse oppositional social movements and on the other hand it reflects its apolitical standpoint associated with a spiritual experience of believers, which proceeds from the popular religion. These aspects of the political and religious boundary of the culture of martyrdom are examined in detail and given in the context of current socio-political reality. The thesis also strives for presenting of arguments founded on the premise which defines the culture of martyrdom as an essential source for constructing of identities and strengthening of solidarity among Iranian Imami Shi'ites,...

Boire avec les morts et la Pachamama : une anthropologie de l'ivresse rituelle et festive dans les Andes boliviennes / Drinking with the dead and the Pachamama : an anthropology of ritual and festive inebriation in the bolivian AndesGeffroy Komadina, Céline 12 April 2013 (has links)
An Andean anthropological focus on ritual and collective intoxication within a festive setting – in particular in funeral contexts - leads to a prolific and fascinating field of research since chicha, the thick fermented corn beverage, contains a world of meaning. The drunkenness it engenders promotes diverse ways of creating links with not only the surrounding animated world but also with the dead. In that sense, it is performative because it makes exist these entities who become serious interlocutors for the humans. This ethnography conducted in the Andean region of Cochabamba (Bolivia), in the Quechua peasant communities of Qhoari and in the nearby village of Arani, analyzes inebriation as a collective action that consolidates social ties, strengthens group identity and even brings the sacred closer. Intoxication is therefore sought, desired and valued. In short, it is a means of communication that allows the establishment of reciprocal relations among humans and between them and the Pachamama (all beings that inhabit animated nature). It is through liquor that human requests can be heard by supernatural entities who can dialogue with them only when they are inebriated, appearing through an alter ego. In fact, wetness is the symbol of life; dryness refers to death. Offerings of libations and blood sacrifices promote the rehydration and nurturing of evil entities and the dead. It is through mechanisms very similar to those at work in such offerings that the body of the drinker, wrecked by alcohol, almost agonizing, acquires its sacrificial meaning.

Téma sebeobětování žen na příkladu divadelního scénáře Prolomit vlny / Self-devotion women motive showed in the "Breaking the waves" scriptJelínková, Jarmila January 2011 (has links)
Jarmila Jelínková - Self-devotion women motive showed on the "Breaking the waves" scenerply Abstract The article analyzes the character of Bess in the script of Lars von Trier and Vivian Nielsen's drama Breaking the Waves. The portrayal of Bess' behavior, life, and relationships to her husband, the church and God are interpreted from the perspective of feminist theology as introduced by Isabel Carter Heyward. The main message of the play is the parallel to Jesus' sacrifice of pure altruism leading towards physical self-destruction; other possible interpretations offered in the article are the images of self-sacrifice as a type of mystical obsession or as a type of internalized manipulation conveyed by means of discursive power. Keywords: faith in God, self-sacrifice, power, freedom, feminist theology, Lars vor Trier, Vivian Nielsen.

Жертва и жертвенность в русской словесности XVI–XVII вв.: контекстуальные и образные модификации : магистерская диссертация / Victim and Self-Sacrifice in Russian Literature of 16th–17th Centuries: Contextual and Figurative ModificationsПопович, А. И., Popovich, A. I. January 2022 (has links)
This work studies the dynamics of use of the sacred for Christian culture literary topoi of victim and self-sacrifice in Era of Change’s Russian literature (the second half of the 16th – early 18th centuries), the trends of its secularization and ideologization. Special attention is paid to the variation of rhetorical strategies and imagery of these “common places” in the literary polemic of Ivan the Terrible and Andrey Kurbsky (as well as its reception) and in the Old Believers’ works.

Saving a Saint : A Study of the Representation of Maria Goretti (1890-1902): a Saint, a Martyr, a Virgin, a ChildCadavid Yani, Helwi Margarita January 2018 (has links)
This thesis examines the legend of the Italian virgin martyr, Saint Maria Goretti (1890-1902). Her legend states that she died at the age of eleven protecting her virginity from her assailant Alessandro Serenelli who stabbed her numerous times, and that she granted him forgiveness before she died. Hence, she has been promoted as an example of purity and mercy. The continued relevance of Saint Maria Goretti is demonstrated by the fact that her figure was used to promote the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy proclaimed by Pope Francis and first announced in March 2015. The aim of the current study is to examine how Maria Goretti has been portrayed in the Catholic tradition. This is done by analysing Maria Goretti’s official representation found in the papal discourse about her (which consists of homilies, discourses, Angelus, messages and a letter), as well as by analysing the devotional discourse which in this study is comprised of two books that belong to the genre of hagiography. The chosen books: St. Maria Goretti, by Marie Cecilia Buehrle (1950), and St. Maria Goretti: In garments all red, by Fr. Godfrey Poage, C.P. (1950) can be included among the classics written about Saint Maria Goretti in English. I deploy a thematic narrative analysis as method in which I’m concerned with content in terms of themes, and with the ways in which characters are represented. Uncovering the themes that are discussed in the papal discourse and the devotional discourse about Saint Maria Goretti contributes to a better understanding of her representation and, in some measure, to a reconsideration of what she represents. A part of this thesis focuses on the aspects of Maria Goretti’s representation that can be considered problematic because of the claim that it is preferable to choose to be killed rather than to be raped. Therefore, it becomes necessary to include the discourse that treats Goretti’s story from a critical point of view which in this study embraces ethical, psychological, and feminist perspectives. The legend of Maria Goretti has been the object of arguably many studies. This thesis, nonetheless, contributes with a more detailed analysis of the discourse about Maria Goretti at the official level as well as the devotional level. I also seek to give insight into the genre of hagiography and to elucidate that the edeavour of portraying a wholly virtuous individual does not come without it’s complications in terms of the interpretations that can be made of the images that are conveyed. The analysis shows, among other things, that the representation of Maria Goretti misses aspects of reality and the complexity and multifariousness of the subject of sexual violence. I argue that a wholesome and more comprehensive representation of Saint Maria Goretti should include expert knowledge of sexual violence, especially that which can be found within the field of psychology.
