Motivace seniorů ke zdravému životnímu stylu v prostředí vybraného regionu / Motivation of seniors to a healthy lifestyle in the environment of the selected region

Kopačková, Dominika January 2018 (has links)
The diploma thesis deals with a healthy lifestyle in the elderly. The main goal of the thesis is to determine the elderly's attitudes about physical activity and healthy eating. The results of the research show that the respondents are a very heterogeneous group and their attitudes towards healthy lifestyle are different. Respondents do not have bad habits due to uninformation, but probably because of lack of motivation. The thesis is divided into two parts, theoretical and explorative one. There are four chapters in the theoretical part. First, the old age and ageing are described. According to the relevant literature there are summarized the changes that are associated with this life stage. Attention is focused on the quality of life and the perception of satisfaction in old age. The work is a summary of important documents that deal with the quality of life and deserve improvement. The thesis summarizes the important documents that deal with the quality of life and improve it. The main pillars of a healthy lifestyle for each age category are proper physical activity and nutritionally balanced diet. In the case of seniors there are many factors that prevent the ideal state and which need to be improved. There is also the issue of motivation as a driving force of human behavior. The results in the...

Effects of Taiji and Strength Training Interventions on Knee Osteoarthritis of Older Adults

Wortley, Michael George 01 December 2010 (has links)
Objective. The objective of this study was to evaluate a 10-week Taiji intervention to a 10-week strength training intervention in terms of their ability to relieve osteoarthritis (OA) symptoms, alter gait, and improve mobility in seniors with knee OA. Methods. Men and women between the ages of 60 and 85 years who met the American College of Rheumatology criteria for knee OA were recruited to participate in either a simplified Taiji program (n=12), an open-chain strength training program (n=13), or a control group (n=6). All participants completed the Western Ontario and MacMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), three physical performance tests, and a 3-D gait analysis at baseline and again after the 10-week intervention. Results. The strength training group significantly improved on the time up-and-go test (p = 0.001), the WOMAC pain sub-score (p=0.006), WOMAC stiffness sub-score (p<0.001), and WOMAC physical function sub-score (p=0.011). The Taiji group significantly improved on the timed up-and-go (p<0.001), but there was no change in their WOMAC scores. Neither group showed any significant changes in either kinematic or kinetic gait variables. Conclusion. Strength training was effective for improving mobility and improving the symptoms of knee OA. Taiji was also effective for improving mobility, but did not improve the participants‟ knee OA symptoms. Neither intervention had an effect the participants walking gait.

Åldrande i ett mångkulturellt samhälle : En kvalitativ studie av äldre invandrares tillgång till samhällsinformation och deras deltagande i aktiviteter riktade till äldre medborgare. / Aging in a multicultural society : A qualitative study of elderly immigrants and their access to local community information and their participation in activities arranged for senior citizens

Hallgrimsdottir Strandberg, Elsa January 2012 (has links)
In light of the European Union`s 2012 theme year: Active aging and solidarity between generations I wished to gain an understanding of weather elderly immigrant are provided with equal possibilities and access to local community information as the majority population and their participation in activities arranged for senior citizens in the municipality where they live. I have done this by meeting with those who work in this capacity. I also chose to meet with representatives for immigrant organizations in the local community to enquire of their work with senior citizens within their own ethnic group. This is a qualitative study on a phenomenological ground based on nine interviews and four observations. I have had two theories to help me analyze my empirical material. Globalization theory is a good groundwork to understanding the changes in modern multicultural societies where I have looked at the work of Anthony Giddens first at hand. The theory of KASAM by Aaron Antonowsky explains how the sense of coherence helps people to remain positive and satisfied in old age despite their failing health and unfavorable circumstances at times. I have found that the municipality where this study is preformed has a multicultural focus in their manor of spreading information. Yet many ethnic groups seek information verbally from friends and family rather than seek it through the official channels which may be more common among the majority population and immigrants that have established themselves in the society. Still all those whom I interviewed agreed that spreading information through direct contact always is the most effective way to get information across to people. I found that the local community meeting places for senior citizens have no immigrants attending on a regular basis. I did meet a group of senior migrant citizens with their origin in various nationalities that gather under the supervision of a cooperation project that has integration and public health as its main goal. All the participants in their activities for senior citizens started coming through personal invitation from the project leader or other group participants. With regards to the theme year those working with senior citizens were aware of it but haven’t had any specific focus on it in their work except for a few that participate in a regional public health project. They all agree that a theme year for active ageing and solidarity is an important milestone to recognizing the needs for recreation and showing respect to those who are beyond the age for retirement.

Spokojenost seniorů se sociálními službami v Prachaticích / Seniors' satisfaction with social services in Prachatice

KUBIŠOVÁ, Lucie January 2017 (has links)
The thesis discusses the satisfaction of senior citizens with social services in Prachatice. My thesis was aimed to identify awareness of senior citizens for social services available in the town of Prachatice. The other aim of my thesis was to identify how seniors are satisfied with the offer and provision of social services in Prachatice. Three research questions were used to achieve the goal. Semi-structured interviews with fourteen senior citizens who utilize social services in Prachatice were used to identify how seniors are informed about social services. Further I wanted to identify how elderly people are content with the offer and availability of social services, and how they are satisfied with the provision of social services, and what could be proposed to improve the offered and delivered social services. The acquired data were analysed using an open data coding method. The collected information indicates that awareness of social services for senior citizens in Prachatice is sufficient. A few proposals were raised by respondents that could increase awareness of available social services. Seniors are partly satisfied with the offer and availability of social services while they are not content with the number of vacancies in the Senior Home. They consider the provision of social services in Prachatice to be sufficient. A high number of respondents would propose to increase vacancies in the Senior Home in order to enhance the social services offered in Prachatice. The respondents would also propose to extend the offer of social services by personal assistance, day care center for elderly, home hospice care and increased number of beds in the Nursing Home for Persons with Cognitive Impairment. The respondents pointed out the possibility of more effective co-operation between providers of social services in Prachatice. The results of my thesis can help increase and make awareness of social services more effective and improve the offer and provision of social services for senior citizens in Prachatice.

The Effects of Age-Graded Associations on the Political Activism of the Elderly

Mata, Joe I. (Joe Israel) 12 1900 (has links)
Although the graying of the American society has been well documented, the question as to whether the elderly populace will indeed become a political factor has yet to be determined. Some studies indicate that the elderly will soon develop the consensus needed for political action; other studies counter that the elderly will never be a viable political factor. Among the determinants listed as influencing the political participation equation are standard socioeconomic variables (e.g., race, social status, education, and income). These factors have been studied extensively (Campbell 1960; Key 1950; Milbrath 1965; Nagel 1987; Rose 1965). Trela recently added an item that could possibly influence the political activism of the elderly: membership in age-graded associations. This study addresses the questions raised by Trela (1971), namely, whether age-graded associations influence the political activity of senior citizens, and if so, in what direction elderly participation is swayed. Unlike previous reports, the preliminary data gathered for this study suggest that the age-graded associations of the elderly cannot accurately predict their political activism.

Experiences of digitalization among Swedish senior citizens : A qualitative phenomenographic interview study on how senior citizens in Sweden experience the phenomenon of digitalization / Experiences of digitalization among Swedish senior citizens : A qualitative phenomenographic interview study on how senior citizens in Sweden experience the phenomenon of digitalization

Ånstad Andersson, Joanna January 2023 (has links)
Our digital world is accelerating at a rapid pace and has made technology a prime component of today’s societies. The development of digitalization affects us all in one way or another but it primarily affects our senior citizens, those who may possess a less developed knowledge within the field. How do senior citizens experience digitalization and its effects on their everyday lives?. This thesis conducted with phenomenographic semi-structured interviews aims to analyze and grasp how senior citizens experience and perceive the developing digitalization in the western world. Studies stresses how technology and digitalization increase information and communication spread in our societies and can be an efficient tool for staying in touch with relatives and close friends living far away. The results of this study, however, emphasizes on the, less talked about, negative aspects of digitalization.   The collected material consists of the answers extracted from eight interviews with male and females aged 65-80+ and these answers are categorized into similarities and differences seen in the interviews. Theoretical perspective of digital divide, ageism, visions of time, concept of experience and social imaginaries were applied to the extracted material to place the experiences in a context. The analysis clearly presents a difference between the genders and their relation to digitalization and it does relate to previous integration and knowledge with the technological field. The male interviewees communicate positive experiences with the digital world as a majority of them have been in contact with technology during their working life. The women on the other hand have more dull perceptions of digitalization and are experiencing feelings of fear of falling behind in the digital world. Self-efficacy and acceleration of time, society, and the digital world play part in how digitalization is experienced and perceived by senior citizens, a generation which may find themselves in a situation where they are unwillingly excluded from the digital society due to lack of previous knowledge and the opportunity to learn without requirements from society.

Challenges of Online Security for Senior Citizens

Sivagumaran, Sinthujan January 2023 (has links)
Senior citizens are among the most vulnerable groups of cyber victimization in today’s contexts. Ensuring online security for the elderly has become extremely critical as the global elderly population is on the rise and the incident of cyber victimization is rapidly growing causing financial and societal problems for them. This study is conducted to identify the challenges faced in ensuring online security to senior citizens and to propose remedies to these identified challenges. A systematic literature review was performed on Google Scholar, IEEEXplore, Pubmed, ScienceDirect and Proquest databases to identify the challenges using appropriate keywords and screening criteria. 29 Review articles (n=29) were found relevant for the challenges of online security for senior citizens and broadly categorized into physical and psychological factors, technological factors, and awareness factors. 14 review articles (n=14) were found to be relevant as remedial measures on IEEEXplore database. Challenges found for physical and psychological factors were health problems such as mobility decline which led to higher use of online services (higher visibility), issues in recalling memory which leads to inability to recall information regarding crime and non-reporting of crime, and cognitive impairment where they are unable to assess the potential choices. Remedial measures which can be applied for these issues include home monitoring systems using beacon technology, path tracking fall detection systems, use of apps like senior book, use of elder friendly web forms. Seniors were also found to be in social isolation where they are exposed to unfamiliar online activities due to the death of the capable partner, less able to seek advice due to lack of network and the possibility of building relationships with strangers allows the fraudsters to target the elders easily. Further, the relative wealth of seniors is high, and they are less likely to check their balances, making them vulnerable. Smart home systems, apps such as SAFER were found to be possible remedial measures for these situations. Also, elders are reluctant to report victimization due to fear of victim blaming and fear of loss of independence which results in repeated victimization. Challenges identified for awareness factors include less awareness of content of scam, trusting communications which are legitimate authorities and limited awareness on cyber security. Information Security Awareness Programs, online courses on security awareness can be used as a remedial measure to enhance the awareness of cyber security among elders. Technological challenges identified include lack of cyber security skills where they do not have the motivation to seek cyber security related information, unable to understand the jargon used and use of unsecured networks and easily imitable passwords. The remedies found were biometrics instead of passwords, participatory approach for the design and development of programs and use of elder friendly internet browsers. This study contributes to the cyber security of senior citizens by understanding the challenges and suggesting remedies for the challenges identified.
