One of the main themes in the masterpiece of Giovanni Boccaccio, the Decameron, written around 1353, is the sensual love, experienced by its characters in a realistic and naturalistic way. Among those characters, we find members of the Catholic clergy who are celibates, and who are the holders of our attention. We intend to describe the characteristics of Boccaccio’s treatment of the sensual love theme in clerical celibacy in ten novelle from the book and present which conceptions of love, individual and human nature are found in those stories. To analyse the corpus, we will consider the foundation of celibacy in the Catholic Church, exposed by Brown (1990); the doctrine of love in Boccaccio, that treats sensual love with realism and naturalism, approached by Scaglione (1963) and Givens (1968); the Aristotle’s rhetorics (2006), since the characters use rhetorics to succeed in loving conquest; the considerations of Ó Cuilleanáin (1984) and Smarr (2014) on the decameronian representation of the clergy; besides studies about the author and book, such as the ones by Auerbach (2007; 2013). Based on Berger (1972) and Nodelman (1988), we will analyse some illustrations which depict the sensual love experienced by celibate characters, drawn by Alex Cerveny. In the Decameron, clerics are unholy, portrayed as ordinary men, in whom nature and instinct are latent. In our view, these men and women must give up sexuality because of the Catholic Church doctrines, but they do not actually want to abdicate this aspect which is inherent to human life. / CAPES: 3300415-3

Major Themes in the Poetry of James Dickey

Tucker, Charles C. 08 1900 (has links)
The themes of sensual experience, nature, and mysticism in James Dickey's poetry are examined. Dickey's "Poems 1957- 1967" and "The Eye-Beaters, Blood, Victory, Madness, Buckhead and Mercy" are the primary sources for the poems. Selections from a decade of Dickey criticism are also represented. Dickey presents a wide spectrum of attitudes toward acceptance of the physical body, communion with nature, and transcendence of the human condition, but the poems exhibit sufficient uniformity to allow thematic generalizations to be made.

Rakickaitė, Gintarė 05 March 2014 (has links)
Darbo tikslas: Įvertinti Lietuvos rinkoje esančių virtų dešrų kokybę. Darbo uždaviniai: 1. Įvertinti aukščiausios, pirmos ir antros rūšių virtų dešrų juslinius rodiklius ( bendrą kvapo ir spalvos intensyvumą, konsistenciją, pjūvio vaizdą, skonį, riebalų skonį, išliekamąjį skonį, kvapo malonumą, susikramtymą, prieskonių kvapą, grūdėtumą spaudžiant, rūgštingumą). 2. Išsiaiškinti aukščiausios, pirmos ir antros rūšių virtų dešrų kokybės rodiklius (mėsos baltymų be kolageno, baltyminių mėsos pakaitalų, valgomosios druskos, riebalų kiekį, drėgnį. 3. Palyginti lietuviškų ir importuotų virtų dešrų kokybinius rodiklius. 4. Evaluate sensual parameters (general smell and color intensity, consistency, sectional view, taste, taste of fat, after taste, pleasure of the smell, chewiness, smell of spices, grit after pressing, acidity) of highest, first and second grade boiled sausages. 2. Determine the qualitative parameters (amount of protein without collagen, protein meat substitutes, salt, fat and moisture) of highest, first and second grade boiled sausages. 3. Compare qualitative parameters between lithuanian and imported boiled sausages. 4. Determine whether or not the qualitative parameters meet the Lithuanian Standard LST 1919:2003 „Meat products“ demands. For the analysis we chose highest, first and second grade boiled sausages from two Lithuanian brands, and imported brands from EU. During the sensual analysis we determined that heat-treated meat products in Lithuanian market mostly differed in the intensity of the smell, general taste of fat and in the smell of spices. We also determined that the largest amounts of fat, protein meat substitutes and protein without collagen are in imported boiled sausages. While eveluating second grade lithuanian brand sausages, we determined that they have the least amounts of protein meat substitutes, fat and moisture. When comparing imported and lithuanian brand sausages we established, that imported sausages have greater amounts of protein... [to full text]

Sensual Architecture: Project for a Thermal Bath at Warm Springs

Bengel, Karen A. 18 August 2000 (has links)
This thesis investigation an project design were driven by the desire to develop an understanding of how architecture addresses the senses. Guided by the practice of a craft, the vestige of art, architectural history and precedent, and the physiology of the five senses, an idea for a thermal bath was expressed through material. This book is a record of that process. / Master of Architecture

"Toulky přírodou" Série intermediálních realizací v krajině. / "Walking the Nature" Series of intermediate realizations in the landscape.

BALADOVÁ, Barbora January 2019 (has links)
This diploma thesis "Nature Travels" is divided into two parts - theoretical and practical. It deals with an issue of human nature and reacts at it from the position of author´s creativity which is based on study of philosophy. The theoretical part deals particularly with two concepts, namely nature and physis. It deals with a development of an individual and society within our environment and how it influences us. "Nature Travels" are recorded in three short videos cut from silent films. They show how we can percept nature being part of it. Simultaneously they also show which forces attack us in urban environment and distract us from the essential issues.

Hydén, Malin January 2006 (has links)

The purpose of this essay is to discuss what a sensual interpretation of art is and what it should include. The discussion is based on an attempt to do a sensual interpretation of the Greek-British artist Helen Chadwick’s Cacao and Wreaths to Pleasure. Chadwick was an artist working with well-known materials in new and unexpected ways. An interpretation of her works should include the fact that her art affect us on different levels, both intellectually and sensually. The history of art includes very few examples of interpretations engaging all senses. Therefore this essay is based on literature in adjacent disciplines like aesthetics, inter art studies and synaesthesia. The thesis of The bad garden is that an art experience includes interplay between senses. This interplay which creates additive sensations, a fact that is not taken into consideration in an interpretation based on only vision. The conclusion is that a sensual interpretation should be a merge of traditional disciplines and must be characterised by subjectivity, contextuality, and intersensuality.

Darbo tikslas - Palyginti bulvių veisles, išaugintas chemizuotame(tręštame mineralinėmis trašomis) ir ekologiniame (tręštame organinėmis trąšomis) fonuose derliaus dydį ir juslines savybes. Darbo metodas. Embodying asana in all new places: transformational ethics, yoga tourism and sensual awakenings

Lalonde, Angelique Maria Gabrielle 25 January 2013 (has links)
Yoga has been an organizing feature of community for thousands of years, shaping and being shaped by the bodies, minds, spiritual worlds and social relationships of its practitioners. Over the course of the last century, it has become a global celebrity-endorsed exemplification of how to live a “good” life and been transformed from the “exotic,” grotesque menageries of ascetic “sinister yogis” and itinerant sages, to define the fit, graceful, radiant, blissful personages of American supermodels and pop-stars. Yoga has moved from the ashrams of India to gyms, church basements and specialized studios of Europe, North America and Australia, and from these centers of economic and political power, to “exotic” peripheries through the global and bodily movements of world-travelers seeking self-discovery, health, spiritual transformation, and connection with the natural world in “less developed” locales. This dissertation explores and documents the movement of yoga-motivated travelers to tourism locales with no historical connection to yoga, asking questions about 1) how yoga travelers’ activities fit in larger contexts of ethical tourism and cross-cultural consumption as yoga travels across borders, 2) the role yoga plays in practitioners’ lives, shaping health, gender, sexuality, and lifestyle, 3) outcomes of sustained contemporary yoga practice on the bodies of practitioners, including affective transformation through bodily manipulation, the expansion of sensual awareness through breath, auditory techniques, meditation and mind-body synthesis, 4) how these bodily transformations are interpreted and applied to contemporary life through syncretic adaptations of yoga ethics from classical yoga texts with contemporary ethical discourses of environmentalism and consumer choice, and 5) how yoga tourists and the owners of yoga tourism locales view, interact with, and mobilize “foreign” locals and locales through sustainable development narratives and ideas of global community and universal spirituality. I apply contemporary anthropological agendas to yoga as a means to explore different ways of being alive, paying particular attention to how sensual potentials are brought to conscious experience by relational engagement with nature and culture, thus shaping our affective worlds. This dissertation charts intimate bodily and cross-cultural human relationships played out through yoga. It considers the spiritual, economic, political and cultural impacts of globalized yoga and yoga tourism. Close attention is paid to the experiential aspects of yoga and how yoga enlivens and relates to larger social narratives of nature sanctity under contemporary stresses of neoliberalism, including how yoga practitioners engage with the ethics of yoga and consumption to make lifestyle choices that align with political and economic concerns for viable ecological, social and cultural futures. / Graduate
