For this, it remakes the myth trajectory since ancient times, exploring the imagery of creation and its various expressions in archaic cultures in the Western World. The main objective of the research is to demonstrate the survival the symbolism of the Mother Goddess and the Serpent Myth in different cultural expressions in dialogue with the Sacred Circle Dances. It also takes into to identify the hidden message that externalizes through body movements that generate archetypical expressions codified in the ritualistic dances and performances, and explores in the same way, the domains of the Great Mother and the Serpent; its symbolic polysemy and the way they are organized in artistic and spacial terms. The main issue of this thesis is that whether the symbolism of the serpent can be considered as a mythical theme survival in the contemporary Sacred Circle Dance. Taking as methodological inspiration the hermeneutic conception of analysis, in this thesis the purpose is to connect the Myth of the Serpent with the most relevant works regarding the Sacred Feminine, history, anthropology and the ritualistic performances. The literature will be reviewed in its thematic axles and in particular the authors and the known experts in the Sciences of Religion. Amid the conceptual interpretations this research produces surveys of recent works on the subject of study to discuss the meanings and the ramifications inspired by ancient traditions and with deep power refresher mythical; and in this discussion, focuses on the aspect of the dances that revive the serpent symbolism and ritually reframe the archaic myths. Traditional and Folk Dances, realized as artistic performances, or even spontaneously, come upon the space created by the traditional parties, replace and vivify myths and prehistoric rituals nowadays. It is considered, therefore, that the Serpent symbology is a mythical theme of the Mother Goddess who survived the performed and ritualistic acts in the contemporary Sacred Circle Dances. / Esta tese investiga as sobrevivências e a camuflagem do Mito da Serpente e do culto à Grande Mãe nas performances mítica e ritualística das Danças Circulares Sagradas na contemporaneidade. Para isso, refaz a trajetória do mito desde a antiguidade, explorando o imaginário da criação e suas diversas expressões em culturas arcaicas no mundo ocidental. O principal objetivo da pesquisa é demonstrar a sobrevivência da simbologia da Deusa Mãe e do Mito da Serpente nas diferentes expressões culturais em diálogo com as Danças Circulares Sagradas. The need for energy is growing in the world and the market of nuclear power is now once more expanding. Some issues of the current light-water reactors can be solved by the next generation of nuclear power, Generation IV, where sodium-cooled reactors are one of the candidates. Phénix was a French prototype sodium-cooled reactor, which is seen as a success. Although it did encounter an earlier unexperienced phenomenon, A.U.R.N., in which a negative reactivity transient followed by an oscillating behavior forced an automatic emergency shutdown of the reactor. This phenomenon lead to a lot of downtime of the reactor and is still unsolved. However, the most probable cause of the transients is radial movements of the core, referred to as core-flowering. This study has investigated the available documentation of the A.U.R.N. events. A simplified model of core-flowering was also created in order to simulate how radial expansion affects the reactivity of a sodium-cooled core. Serpent, which is a Monte-Carlo based simulation code, was chosen as calculation tool. Furthermore, a model of the Phénix core was successfully created and partly validated. The model of the core has a k_eff = 1.00298 and a neutron flux of (8.43+-0.02)!10^15 neutrons/cm^2 at normal state. The result obtained from the simulations shows that an expansion of the core radius decreases the reactivity. A linear approximation of the result gave the relation: change in k_eff/core extension = - 60 pcm/mm. This value corresponds remarkably well to the around - 60 pcm/mm that was obtained from the dedicated core-flowering experiments in Phénix made by the CEA. Core-flowering can recreate similar signals to those registered during the A.U.R.N. events, though the absence of trace of core movements in Phénix speaks against this. However, if core-flowering is the sought answer, it can be avoided by design. The equipment that registered the A.U.R.N. events have proved to be insensitive to noise. Though, the high amplitude of the transients and their rapidness have made some researcher believe that the events are a combination of interference in the equipment of Phénix and a mechanical phenomenon. Regardless, the origin of A.U.R.N. seems to be bound to some specific parameter of Phénix due to the fact that the transients only have occurred in this reactor. A safety analysis made by an expert committee, appointed by CEA, showed that the A.U.R.N. events are not a threat to the safety of Phénix. However, the origin of these negative transients has to be found before any construction of a commercial size sodium-cooled fast reactor can begin. Thus, further research is needed.

Peptides vipérins à activité anti-intégrines : intérêt dans le traitement des pathologies ischémiques de la rétine et les DMLA / Integrins inhibitor isolated from snake venom for the treatment of ischemic retinopathies and AMD

Les rétinopathies ischémiques et la forme humide de la dégénérescence maculaire liée à l’âge (DMLA) sont la principale cause de malvoyance respectivement chez les personnes en âge de travailler et les personnes agées. Les néovascularisations choroïdiennes (NVC) et rétiniennes et l’œdème maculaire associés à ces pathologies sont traités à l’aide de biomolécules qui ciblent uniquement la voie de signalisation des VEGF. Le développement de thérapies indépendantes de cette voie permettrait d’offrir aux patients résistants aux anti-VEGF une alternative thérapeutique pour préserver leur vision. Les intégrines αvβ3 et αvβ5, impliquées dans la néovascularisation oculaire, apparaissent ainsi comme une cible alternative intéressante. La Lébécetine (LCT), une lectine de type-C, de 30 kDa et de structure hétérodimèrique issue de venin de serpent Macrovipera lebetina interagit spécifiquement avec les intégrines α5β1 et αvβ3, αvβ5. La LCT a une activité anti-angiogénique in vitro sur des cellules endothéliales microvasculaire du cerveau humain (HBMEC) et in vivo sur le modèle de la membrane chorioallantoïde du poulet (CAM). Afin d’étudier son effet sur la néovascularisation oculaire, nous avons eu recours aux modèles d’angiogenèse ex vivo utilisant des explants aortique ou choroïdien cultivés en présence de LCT, puis son effet a été évalué in vivo dans un modèle de NVC chez la souris et également sur la néovascularisation rétinienne dans le modèle de rétinopathie induite par l’oxygène (RIO). Nos données démontrent qu’une injection unique de LCT est capable de réduire la NVC et rétinienne dans ces modèles sans affecter les vaisseaux quiescents matures indiquant un bon profil d’innocuité. / Ischemic retinopathies and the wet form of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) are characterized by devastating angiogenesis responsible for the majority of irreversible blindness. Current therapies include use of anti-VEGF agents to reduce choroidal neovascularization and edema. These treatments are effective in most cases, but spontaneous or acquired resistance to anti-VEGF highlight a need for additional alternative therapies. In recent years, pharmacological inhibition of αvβ3 and αvβ5, which regulate endothelial cell proliferation and stabilization, have emerged as new therapeutic tools for the treatment of these diseases. Lebecetin (LCT), a 30-kDa heterodimeric C-type lectin that is isolated from Macrovipera lebetina venom, interacts with α5β1 and αv-containing integrins (αvβ3, αvβ5). We previously showed that LCT has an anti-angiogenic effect in vitro on human brain microvascular endothelial cells (HBMEC) and in vivo in a chick chorioallontoic membrane assay (CAM). To evaluate the inhibitory effect of LCT on ocular angiogenesis, we cultured aortic and choroidal explants in the presence of LCT and analyzed the effect of LCT on choroidal neovascularization in the mouse CNV model and on retinal neovascularization in the oxygen induced retinopathy (OIR) model. Our data demonstrated that a single injection of LCT efficiently reduced choroidal and retinal neovascularization in these models with no significant effect on mature blood vessels predicting a good safety profile.

A signification in stone : the lapis as a metaphor for visual hybridisation in the Harry Potter films

This study considers the visual representation of the alchemical idea of the philosopher’s stone (lapis philosophorum) in the Harry Potter films: Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (Columbus 2001), Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (Columbus 2002), Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (Cuaron 2004), Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Newell 2005), andHarry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Yates 2007). The lapis philosophorum was believed to turn base metals into gold and produce an Elixir of Life. As such, it is envisioned as the ultimate alchemical idea, and this study emphasises how the lapis can function as a signifier for an alchemical worldview within the Harry Potter films. Because the concept and symbolism of the Harry Potter films is largely based on JK Rowling’s (1997; 1998; 1999; 2000; 2003; 2005; 2007) original novels, this study provides a detailed comparison of how alchemical imagery is used in the novels and contrasts this with the visual imagery of the films. This study undertakes a hermeneutic analysis of the transmission of alchemical ideals from the literary to the visual medium. It also provides a detailed analysis of interrelated visual icons in the Harry Potter films that represent the idea of the lapis as an embodiment of alchemical perfection. In addition, by studying the interplay between alchemical imagery in the Harry Potter novels and films, and comparing the worldviews represented by each, this study is able to analyse the dynamics of the hermeneutic process. Handling Authenticity: A Discourse Analysis of Interviews with Signs-following Preachers

The National Geographic Channel’s miniseries “Snake Salvation” resurrected a vested interest with the heavily documented practices of signs-following believers in central Appalachia. The current body of scholarship surrounding these congregations focuses mostly on oral history narratives and explanations of religious fundamentalism; a critical analysis of the discourse shared by these congregation members is noticeably absent. This thesis explores selected interviews with George Hensley, Andrew Hamblin, Jamie Coots, and Alfred Ball through the interdisciplinary application of discourse analysis paired with social disclosure theory to unveil the underlying struggles with power and personal beliefs expressed by each pastor. The research performed throughout this study spans interviews collected and published from the 1940s to 2014. Through a discourse analysis performed on these interviews coupled with support from sociological and communicative theoretical frameworks, this study looks to highlight struggles with power and authenticity present for signs-following pastors.

Deception seems to be a vital part for special forces operations and a new prioritized task in the future. Despite that, is deception a phenomenon that is not taking an independent starting point in special operations theories. The purpose of this study is to contribute to the debate about the role of deception in special forces operations. This has been done by examining the extent to which Barton Whaley’s theory can explain the outcome of special operations. By analysing Operation Neptune’s Spear and Operation Gothic Serpent with Whaley’s theoretical framework, the conclusion is that deception can, to some extent, explain the outcome. The operations are opposites, one successful and the other unsuccessful. The result shows that deception is more common in the successful one. Despite this, the result suggest that more research is needed to draw relevant conclusions. One can only say that the result gives an indication about the role of deception in these kinds of operations.
