Designing and implementing a small scale Internet Service Provider

Brown, Johan, Gustafsson Brokås, Alexander, Hurtig, Niklas, Johansson, Tobias January 2009 (has links)
The objective of this thesis is to design and implement a small scaleInternet Service Provider (ISP) for the NetCenter sub department atMälardalen University. The ISP is intended to give NetCenter a networkseparate from the University’s network, providing them with a moreflexible environment for lab purposes. This will give their students anopportunity to experience a larger backbone with Internet accessibility, which has not been previously available. At the same time it will place theteachers in control of the network in the NetCenter lab premises. The network is designed with a layered approach including an Internetaccess layer, a larger core segment and a distribution layer with aseparated lab network. It also incorporates both a public and a privateserver network, housing servers running e.g. Windows Active Directory, external DNS services, monitoring tools and logging applications. TheInternet access is achieved by peering with SUNET providing a full BGPfeed. This thesis report presents methods, implementations and results involvedin successfully creating the NetCenter ISP as both a lab network and anInternet provider with a few inevitable shortcomings; the most prominentbeing an incomplete Windows Domain setup.

Utvärdering av nätverkssäkerheten på J Bil AB / Evaluation of the network security at J Bil AB

Ahmed, Olfet, Saman, Nawar January 2013 (has links)
The aim of this project is to evaluate the network security at J Bil AB. The focus will be on both social and technical issues. For the employees to be able to con-nect to remote servers and external services and perform their daily work tasks, secure connections is needed. J Bil Ab has no IT manager who actively maintains and monitors the network; rather they consult a computer company when changes and implementations are required. The projects’ goal is to identify gaps, come up with suggestions for improvement and to some extent implement so-lutions. To do this, an observation of the employees hav been made, an inter-view have been held, and several attacks on the network have been performed. Based on the data collected, it was concluded that the company has shortcom-ings in IT security. Above all, the social security appeared to have major gaps in it and that is mainly because the lack of knowledge among the employees and they have never been informed of how to manage their passwords, computers and IT issues in general. Suggestions for improvement have been given and some implementations have been performed to eliminate the deficiencies.

On-line analytical processing in distributed data warehouses

Lehner, Wolfgang, Albrecht, Jens 14 April 2022 (has links)
The concepts of 'data warehousing' and 'on-line analytical processing' have seen a growing interest in the research and commercial product community. Today, the trend moves away from complex centralized data warehouses to distributed data marts integrated in a common conceptual schema. However, as the first part of this paper demonstrates, there are many problems and little solutions for large distributed decision support systems in worldwide operating corporations. After showing the benefits and problems of the distributed approach, this paper outlines possibilities for achieving performance in distributed online analytical processing. Finally, the architectural framework of the prototypical distributed OLAP system CUBESTAR is outlined.

Application interference analysis: Towards energy-efficient workload management on heterogeneous micro-server architectures

Hähnel, Markus, Arega, Frehiwot Melak, Dargie, Waltenegus, Khasanov, Robert, Castrillo, Jeronimo 11 May 2023 (has links)
The ever increasing demand for Internet traffic, storage and processing requires an ever increasing amount of hardware resources. In addition to this, infrastructure providers over-provision system architectures to serve users at peak times without performance delays. Over-provisioning leads to underutilization and thus to unnecessary power consumption. Therefore, there is a need for workload management strategies to map and schedule different services simultaneously in an energy-efficient manner without compromising performance, specially for heterogeneous micro-server architectures. This requires statistical models of how services interfere with each other, thereby affecting both performance and energy consumption. Indeed, the performance-energy behavior when mixing workloads is not well understood. This paper presents an interference analysis for heterogeneous workloads (i.e., CPU- and memory-intensive) on a big.LITTLE MPSoC architecture. We employ state-of-the-art tools to generate multiple single-application mappings and characterize the interference among two different services. We observed a performance degradation factor between 1.1 and 2.5. For some configurations, executing on different clusters resulted in reduced energy consumption with no performance penalty. This kind of detailed analysis give us first insights towards more general models for future workload management systems.

Extending the Cutting Stock Problem for Consolidating Services with Stochastic Workloads

Hähnel, Markus, Martinovic, John, Scheithauer, Guntram, Fischer, Andreas, Schill, Alexander, Dargie, Waltenegus 16 May 2023 (has links)
Data centres and similar server clusters consume a large amount of energy. However, not all consumed energy produces useful work. Servers consume a disproportional amount of energy when they are idle, underutilised, or overloaded. The effect of these conditions can be minimised by attempting to balance the demand for and the supply of resources through a careful prediction of future workloads and their efficient consolidation. In this paper we extend the cutting stock problem for consolidating workloads having stochastic characteristics. Hence, we employ the aggregate probability density function of co-located and simultaneously executing services to establish valid patterns. A valid pattern is one yielding an overall resource utilisation below a set threshold. We tested the scope and usefulness of our approach on a 16-core server with 29 different benchmarks. The workloads of these benchmarks have been generated based on the CPU utilisation traces of 100 real-world virtual machines which we obtained from a Google data centre hosting more than 32000 virtual machines. Altogether, we considered 600 different consolidation scenarios during our experiment. We compared the performance of our approach-system overload probability, job completion time, and energy consumption-with four existing/proposed scheduling strategies. In each category, our approach incurred a modest penalty with respect to the best performing approach in that category, but overall resulted in a remarkable performance clearly demonstrating its capacity to achieve the best trade-off between resource consumption and performance.

Systém pro automatickou správu serverů / System for Automated Server Administration

Pavelka, Martin January 2019 (has links)
The goal of this diploma thesis is to design the user interface and implement the information system as a web application. Using the custom implemented library the system communicates with GraphQL server which manages the client data. The thesis describes possible solutions for physical servers automatization. The application provides the application interface to manage virtual servers. Automatization is possible without human interaction. Connection to the virtualization technologies is handled by web interface APIs or custom scripts running in the virtual system terminal. There is a monitoring system built over project components. The thesis also describes the continuous integration using Gitlab tools. Running the configuration task is solved using the Unix CRON system.
