The Continuous Wavelet Transform and the Wave Front Set

In this paper I formulate an explicit wavelet transform that, applied to any distribution in S^1(R^2), yields a function on phase space whose high-frequency singularities coincide precisely with the wave front set of the distribution. This characterizes the wave front set of a distribution in terms of the singularities of its wavelet transform with respect to a suitably chosen basic wavelet.

Descriptions and Computation of Ultrapowers in L(R)

The results from this dissertation are an exact computation of ultrapowers by measures on cardinals $\aleph\sb{n},\ n\in w$, in $L(\IR$), and a proof that ordinals in $L(\IR$) below $\delta\sbsp{5}{1}$ represented by descriptions and the identity function with respect to sequences of measures are cardinals. An introduction to the subject with the basic definitions and well known facts is presented in chapter I. In chapter II, we define a class of measures on the $\aleph\sb{n},\ n\in\omega$, in $L(\IR$) and derive a formula for an exact computation of the ultrapowers of cardinals by these measures. In chapter III, we give the definitions of descriptions and the lowering operator. Then we prove that ordinals represented by descriptions and the identity function are cardinals. This result combined with the fact that every cardinal $<\delta\sbsp{5}{1}$ in $L(\IR$) is represented by a description (J1), gives a characterization of cardinals in $L(\IR$) below $\delta\sbsp{5}{1}. Concrete examples of formal computations are shown in chapter IV.

Audio Recognition in Incremental Open-set Environments

Machine learning algorithms have shown their abilities to tackle difficult recognition problems, but they are still rife with challenges. Among these challenges is how to deal with problems where new categories constantly occur, and the datasets can dynamically grow. Most contemporary learning algorithms developed to this point are governed by the assumptions that all testing data classes must be the same as training data classes, often with equal distribution. Under these assumptions, machine-learning algorithms can perform very well, using their ability to handle large feature spaces and classify outliers. The systems under these assumptions are called Closed Set Recognition systems (CSR). However, these assumptions cannot reflect practical applications in which out-of-set data may be encountered. This adversely affects the recognition prediction performances. When samples from a new class occur, they will be classified as one of the known classes. Even if this sample is far from any of the training samples, the algorithm may classify it with a high probability, that is, the algorithm will not only be wrong, but it may also be very confident in its results. A more practical problem is Open Set Recognition (OSR), where samples of classes not seen during training may show up at testing time. Inherently, there is a problem how the system can identify the novel sound classes and how the system can update its models with new classes. This thesis highlights the problems of multi-class recognition for OSR of sounds as well as incremental model adaptation and proposes solutions towards addressing these problems. The proposed solutions are validated through extensive experiments and are shown to provide improved performance over a wide range of openness values for sound classification scenarios.

Damage Detection Based on the Geometric Interpretation of the Eigenvalue Problem

A method that can be used to detect damage in structures is developed. This method is based on the convexity of the geometric interpretation of the eigenvalue problem for undamped positive definite systems. The damage detection scheme establishes various damage scenarios which are used as failure sets. These scenarios are then compared to the structure's actual response by measuring the natural frequencies of the structure and using a Euclideian norm. Mathematical models were developed for application of the method on a cantilever beam. Damage occurring at a single location or in multiple locations was estalished and studied. Experimental verification was performed on serval prismatic beams in which the method provided adequate results. The exact location and extent of damage for several cases was predicted. When the method failed the prediction was very close to the actual condition in the structure. This method is easy to use and does not require a rigorous amount of instrumentation for obtaining the experimental data required in the detection scheme. / Ph. D.

A coalition in a graph G =(V, E) consists of two disjoint sets of vertices V1 and V2, neither of which is a dominating set of G but whose union V1 ∪ V2 is a dominating set of G.A coalition partition in a graph G of order n = |V| is a vertex partition π= {V1, V2,⋯, Vk} of V such that every set Vi either is a dominating set consisting of a single vertex of degree n - 1, or is not a dominating set but forms a coalition with another set Vj which is not a dominating set. Associated with every coalition partition πof a graph G is a graph called the coalition graph of G with respect to π, denoted CG(G, π), the vertices of which correspond one-to-one with the sets V1, V2,⋯, Vk of πand two vertices are adjacent in CG(G, π) if and only if their corresponding sets in πform a coalition. In this paper we study coalition graphs, focusing on the coalition graphs of paths, cycles, and trees. We show that there are only finitely many coalition graphs of paths and finitely many coalition graphs of cycles and we identify precisely what they are. On the other hand, we show that there are infinitely many coalition graphs of trees and characterize this family of graphs.

Evaluation of 1,1-Dimethyl-5,7-Di-T-Butylspiro[2.5]Octa-4,7-Dien-6-One as a Mechanistic Probe for Single Electron Transfer

Single electron transfer (SET) mechanisms are becoming ubiquitous in modern organic chemistry. However, it is often difficult to distinguish SET mechanisms from polar mechanisms. Kinetics, products and product distributions, and response to perturbation in solvent and substituents are often identical between the two mechanisms. Detection techniques such as EPR, CIDNP, and UV absorption can often detect "blind" pathways and thus cannot provide unambiguous evidence regarding the true mechanism of interest. In recent years mechanistic probes have been developed which can test for single electron transfer in the mechanism of interest in a more unambiguous manner, although a given probe is often applicable to a narrower range of reactions. In this work 1,1-dimethyl-5,7-di-t-butylspiro[2.5]octa-4,7-dien-6-one (6) is presented as a new "hypersensitive" probe for single electron transfer to conjugated carbonyl compounds. This new probe functions in a rather unique fashion, allowing interpretation of the mechanism at work on the basis of the regiochemistry of spirocyclic ring opening. This "regiodifferentiation" based probe was studied with a variety of nucleophiles (particularly Grignard reagents) and has been found to be effective in differentiating SET from polar processes, although surprising results indicative of polar pathways in the case of reaction of 6 with Grignard reagents other than methyl Grignard were found. Additional insight into the mechanism of the reaction of Grignard reagents with conjugated ketones is also presented. / Master of Science

Denna uppsats har som syfte att synliggöra hur värdegrundsarbetet påverkas av schemalagd livskunskap. Vi har även valt att studera huruvida arbetsmetoden SET, social och emotionell träning, kan likställas med ämnet livskunskap. Detta har vi gjort genom att använda en kvalitativ metod genom semistrukturerade intervjuer. Vi har intervjuat nio pedagoger verksamma på sex olika skolor i en kommun där SET är schemalagt minst en lektionstimme i veckan. Vi har i vår studie kommit fram till att värdegrundsarbetet i största möjliga mån påverkar värdegrundsarbetet positivt då detta är en väg att hjälpa eleverna i deras begreppsförståelse och samhörighet. SET är en arbetsmetod som till vissa delar går att likställas med livskunskap dock saknas en del arbetsområden. / This paper aims to highlight how fundamental values are affected by scheduled life skills. We also decided to study whether the working method SET, social and emotional training, can be equated with life skills. We have done this by using a qualitative approach through semi-structured interviews. We interviewed nine teachers operating in six different schools in a municipality where SET is scheduled at least one hour lesson a week. We have in our study concluded that Fundamental values effects they students positively. We have also concluded that the working method SET to certain parts can be equated with life skills although some parts are missing.
