Towards Global Citizenship Education : A comparative case study of primary school policy and practice between Greece and SwedenSymeonidis, Vasileios January 2015 (has links)
Global citizenship education (GCE) has recently emerged as a dynamic approach to education capturing the interest of various stakeholders, including academics, educators and international organisations worldwide. In an increasingly interconnected and interdependent world, GCE is seen as a transformative pedagogy that can empower learners to resolve growing global challenges, building a more just and sustainable world. This study explores how GCE is “transferred, translated and transformed” (Cowen, 2009a; 2009b; 2006) into contemporary national education policy and practice, through a comparison of experience between Greece and Sweden. Based on a qualitative research approach, the study first examines the discourse of international organisations, such as UNESCO, the European Union and Oxfam, in order to better understand efforts to promote GCE and its implications for teaching and learning. National education curricula on citizenship-related subjects are then analysed to identify how they address GCE, while a third level of analysis involves exploring how primary school teachers and students perceive and implement the particular concept. To this end, document analysis, interviews and focus groups have been employed as methods to gather relevant data. The findings of the study indicate that international organisations have developed a powerful GCE discourse, elements of which can be seen in national education policy and school practice, yet with different emphasis between countries as a result of diverse socio-economic, political and historical contexts. In Greece, the focus on ethnocentrism and Europeanism hinders the effective delivery of GCE, whereas in Sweden, the strong commitment to human rights and internationalism allows to integrate the concept in school practice. The predominant form of global citizenship promoted in both countries is moral cosmopolitan, while critical and postcolonial approaches to the concept do not appear to have been recognised or implemented in practice. Considering all three phases of shape-shifting educational ideas, as defined by Cowen (2006), the study concludes that although policy support for GCE is evident in international and national policy discourse, actual implementation in schools is weak.

Waterproofing Shape-Changing Mechanisms Using Origami Engineering; Also a Mechanical Property Evaluation Approach for Rapid PrototypingKatz, Andrew Jason 07 June 2016 (has links)
My work has been focused on compliant mechanisms, origami engineering, and rapid prototyping. Two of the projects that I worked on were focused on compliant mechanisms and origami engineering. The similar goal of both of those projects was to create an origami membrane whose kinematics mimic that of an existing mechanism. The first project created an origami membrane to mimic the kinematics of a planar shape-changing mechanism. This mechanism was a square shaped unit-cell which could shear, compress, and expand in its own plane. In addition to waterproofing the mechanism, the first project also sought to optimize the dimensions of the mechanism in order to reduce internal stresses during actuation. The results of the optimization portion of this project were a reduction of internal stresses by more than 22%. The results of the origami synthesis portion of the project was the creation of a membrane with an origami pattern whose kinematics mimic that of the shape-shifting surface. The origami membrane is capable of being folded into each of the various positions that the shape-shifting surface is able to fold into. The second project sought to create a similar type of origami fold pattern, but for a Shape Morphing Space Frame (SMSF). This project created an origami membrane designed to mimic the kinematics of a mechanism that had been developed in a different previous project. The mechanism consisted of a series of Linear Bistable Elements (LBEs) which were assembled to form a cylinder. When the LBEs were actuated the cylinder would deform to a hyperboloid. This project created an origami membrane whose kinematics mimic that of the shape-morphing space frame and was able to change side length by more than 30%. The origami membrane was able to fold to each of the SMSF’s states. This project also developed a method for synthesizing an origami fold pattern with shape-morphing triangles. Both of the first two projects that comprise this dissertation sought to develop an origami fold pattern whose kinematics mimic that of an existing mechanism. In each of these projects one of the future goals for the project was to create a prototype where the mechanism and the origami are fabricated together as one integrated prototype. Possible methods of accomplishing this goal include rapid prototyping. Thus, the mechanics of rapid prototyping are of concern for future work on these projects. The third project developed a part which could be printed from a Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) machine to test certain material properties (yield strength and elastic modulus) after it had been processed through the FDM. This would allow the material properties to be tested without the use of expensive test equipment. This project developed eight parts which could be used to bracket certain material properties of rapid prototyped parts after processing. The parts developed in this project were capable of bracketing the material properties of the materials in question, and were able to do so when tested across multiple FDM machines. The results of this work were stress-strain data which indicates the behavior of the part under load, and a method for inexpensively testing the material properties of rapid prototyped parts after processing.

Encounter Border Creatures in Human Fabrications : The becoming of human on a corona para-siteShen, Xiaoyi January 2020 (has links)
This project seeks opportunities to dissolve identity boundaries between the human and nonhuman by speculating into alternative scenarios of a ‘Border Creature’s life in a human-fabricated world. I took advantage of my newly acquired nonhuman identity, the Novel Coronavirus (SARS-COV2-19), which is known for causing a global pandemic (Covid-19) in the year 2020, and ‘transferred’ myself into a Border Creature. Via designed tangible facial devices and speculative scenarios built by photography and ‘dairy’ writing, the project is to highlight the shared identity a human has with Coronavirus in Växjö city, Sweden, and to confront the inhuman status Border Creature is undertaking due to social stigmatization in order to raise questions and reflections around our prefigured definition of what is human.

The Animal Within : A Psychoanalytical Perspective on Shape-ShiftingEmmer Granqvist, Linus January 2011 (has links)
As seen from cultural history, shape-shifting is a very widespread literary motif, which suggests that it has high inspirational power and general appeal. Shape-shifting has not been critically examined in the detail it merits: it is mostly examined as a part of other theories. Examination of Freud‟s psychological theories and modern literature such as Dracula, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and The White Wolf of the Hartz Mountains shows strong connections between the power of this motif and repressed animal instincts – an animal within. This connection usually manifests symbolically rather than as an actual representation of an unearthing of repressed material. There are connections to religious beliefs and a wish to be more than human which raises questions about what is implied by changing into an animal – less than human – shape. The relation between shape-shifting and repression causes an uncanny atmosphere about the motif, something which is used extensively in The White Wolf of the Hartz Mountains and Dracula. There is also evidence suggesting the possibility that psychosis and neurosis might manifest as a sort of mental shape-shifting. In literature this can be seen in the were-wolf Lupin in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and the Berserkers of the Norse. Examination of the Boggart and Lupin of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and of the Norse berserkers show that the empowerment of shape-shifting mostly lies in control. All of this considered, and with the lack of critical examination in mind, shape-shifting seems severely underestimated and under-examined.

Algoritmy pro vyhledání nejdelšího shodného prefixu / Longest Prefix Match AlgorithmsSedlář, František January 2013 (has links)
This master's thesis explains basics of the longest prefix match (LPM) problem. It analyzes and describes chosen LPM algorithms considering their speed, memory requirements and an ability to implement them in hardware. On the basis of former findings it proposes a new algorithm Generic Hash Tree Bitmap. It is much faster than many other approaches, while its memory requirements are even lower. An implementation of the proposed algorithm has become a part of the Netbench library.
