Micro coaxial transmission lines for integrated microwave circuits

Natarajan, Saravana Prakash 01 June 2007 (has links)
The research presented in this doctoral dissertation introduces a developmental path to realize micro coaxial transmission lines for wafer-level microwave and millimeter wave circuits. The micro coax lines conceptualized in this research are three-dimensional, with a uniquely low vertical profile of 20 mu m. They are distinguishable from other transmission line topologies due to frequency limitless, cross-talk free performance in high density circuits resulting from the totally shielded construction. Design and optimization was done using equations and electromagnetic simulations. Extensive process development has been carried out to fabricate these devices on CMOS grade silicon wafers using processes amenable to the IC manufacturing industry. Micro coax lines of three different core types including air, semi-dielectric and all-dielectric cores were designed, fabricated and analyzed from 1 - 40 GHz with respect to line impedance and the volume of polyimide (dielectric) in the micro coax cavity. The insertion loss of the lines was found to vary from 2 to 9 dB/cm depending on the width the center conductor, total cross-sectional area and core type. The versatility of the micro coax technology developed in the earlier part of this research has been successfully integrated with RF MEMS to embed a MEM varactor inside the micro coax cavity capable of achieving a capacitance ratio around 7 with an actuation voltage of 40 - 60V. The vertical integration capability of the micro coax was demonstrated by locating a millimeter wave slot antenna on the top side shield of a rectangular micro coax line, also acting as the electromagnetically coupled feed for the antenna. The antenna was designed to operate in the full range of the unlicensed 57 - 64 GHz spectrum capable of Gbps data rates. A 15 dB bandwidth of 17% and a hemispherical radiation pattern was achieved. Lastly, a diversified application involving the application of an integrated micro coax probe-microfluidic chamber approach to detect bacteria through impedance measurements has been introduced. In summary, the development and implementation of micro coax technology on a large scale is bound to create a paradigm shift in the development of high density microwave and millimeter wave circuits for RF MEMS and integrated antennas.

Estudo da soldabilidade do tubo API 5L X80 utilizando os processos de soldagem eletrodo revestido e MAG com transferência controlada na raiz e enchimento com arame tubular autoprotegido. / Study of weldability of API 5L X80 steel pipe using the welding processes of shielded metal arc welding and GMAW-CT in the root pass and self shielded flux cored in filling and finishing passes.

In the oil and gas industries, pipelines are efficient ways of transporting these products, or its derivatives, from exploration regions to refineries and, in some cases, up to the final consumer. The main type of steel used in manufacturing these pipelines are HSLA steels that, due to the good relationship between tensile strength and toughness at low temperatures, create a cost/benefit ratio in the use and installation of these pipelines. This paper presents a study on the weldability of API 5L X80 HSLA pipe steel. The samples used were pipe rings with 508 mm outside diameter and a wall thickness of 19.0 mm. The root welding process was performed using SMAW in Experiment 1 with filing and finishing passes with SMAW. In the second experiment, the root pass were welded with GMAW-CT, and filling and finishing passes with FCAW-SS. Tensile test results, lateral bending tests and \'Nick-Break\' tests showed that both welding procedures were qualified according to API 1104 Standard. Associating these results with Charpy V test at 0°C and with quantification of volume fractions of MA microconstituent is possible to observe that the values of absorbed energy in the HAZ are more closely related to the mechanism of grain refinement, which improves the values obtained with the volume fraction of the amount of microconstituent MA.

Alternative electronic packaging concepts for high frequency electronics

Siebert, Wolfgang Peter January 2005 (has links)

The aim of the research work presented here, is to contribute to the adaptation of electronic packaging towards the needs of high frequency applications. As the field of electronic packaging stretches over several very different professional areas, it takes an interdisciplinary approach to optimize the technology of electronic packaging. Besides this, an extensive knowledge of industrial engineering should be an essential part of this undertaking to improve electronic packaging. Customary advances in technology are driven by new findings and a continuous development of processes in clearly defined fields. However, in the field of the higher levels of the interconnection hierarchy, that is external to the chip level interconnections and chip packaging, it is supposed that a wide combination of disciplines and technical creativity, instead of advanced technology in a special area should produce most added value.

The thesis is divided into five areas, interlinked by the overall aim of there advantages to the common goal. These areas are the Printed Wiring Board (PWB) technology, PWB connections using flexible printed circuit boards, multiconductor cable connections, shielded enclosures and the related EMC issues, and finally the cooling of electronics. A central issue was to improve the shielded enclosures to be effective also at very high frequencies; it will be shown that shielded enclosures without apertures can cope with frequencies up to and above 15 GHz. Due to this enclosure without apertures, it was necessary to develop a novel cooling structure. This cooling structure consists of a heat sink where the PCB’s are inserted in close contact to the cooling fins on one side, whereas the other side of the heat sink is cooled by forced ventilation. The heat transfer between these parts is completely inside the same body. Tests carried out on a prototype have shown that the performance of the cooling structure is satisfactory for electronic cooling.

Another problem area that is addressed are the interconnect problems in high frequency applications. Interconnections between parts of a local electronic system, or as within the telecom and datacom field between subscribers, are commonly accomplished by cable connections. In this research work multiconductor cables are examined and a patented novel cable-connector for high frequency use is presented. Further, an experimental complex soldering method between flexible printed circuits boards and rigid printed circuits boards, as part of connections between PCBs, is shown. Finally, different sectors of the PCB technology for high frequency applications are scrutinized and measurements on microstrip structures are presented.

According to this, this dissertation tries to understand the the phenomenon of the charismatic domination of female religious leaders that use the media resources and which are the reason of this acceptance in a time that a revolution in gender relationships have been implemented mainly inside the religious field. In terms of research methodology, it was used a sociological analysis from videos available on their youtube channels, with the general goal to understand the acceptance of a conservative religious speech delivered by social medias. It was concluded that inside the liquid modernity proposed by Zygmunt Bauman, the agreement with the retrograde message, enunciated by two women by the media is accepted, because it proposes a kind of "confort", "safety" to the the ephemeral relations of this society. Contributing to interpret this religious phenomenon that makes pseudo female empowerment throught the binominal of modernity versus tradition.

Electromagnetic noise generated in the electrified railway propulsion system

Jia, Kelin January 2011 (has links)
The electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) problem in the railway propulsion system is a significant safety issue of high concern. The problems can be caused by any part of the propulsion system as well as any combination of the sub systems. Simulation is a fast economical way to understand the system and to predict the EMC performance. In this thesis, the propulsion system is studied partly from the rectifier to the motor. To simulate the rectifier, a two level pulse width modulation (PWM) controlled rectifier is built in Simulink. Time domain line current as well as frequency domain spectra is studied. The spectrum changing according to time variation is obtained. In order to study the high derivative of switching pulse in the insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT), a simple circuit is proposed to investigate it. The high frequency noise spectrum is given and the variation of the spectrum due to the reverse recovery time of the ant-parallel diode is also demonstrated. Transmission line theory is used to model the cable used to connect the inverter and motor. The method to extract the characteristic capacitance and inductance matrices of the cable system is presented. Decoupling these characteristic matrices is required for modeling the multiconductor transmission line (MTL) in PSpice. A simple way to decouple them is thus proposed here. Through the simulation studies, we analyze the oscillation and overvoltage in the cable. A fourth cable with optimized layout is also illustrated here to reduce the oscillation on the line. Furthermore, the relationship between the length of line and the noise frequency is studied. Shielding is another way to reduce the electromagnetic (EM) coupling of power lines. The method to model shielded cables in PSpice is given in this thesis. Based on the model we have investigated the shielding effect and analyzed the impact of different grounding conditions on the shielding performance. / QC 20110321
