Laboratory Experiments on Interfacial Wave Train across Pseudo Slope-Shelf Topography

Chang, Ming-Hung 20 June 2011 (has links)
Equipped with advanced field instruments in the past few decades, oceanographers have been able to comprehend some characteristics of the internal waves(IWs), such as the generation, propagation and energy dissipation, as well as to promote understanding in oceanography and marine ecology affected by IWs in the world ocean. Although surface gravity wave and internal wave are two of the most common natural phenomena in the ocean, the interaction between them has not been fully investigated, despite limited theoretical derivations in the literature, nor using laboratory experiments to verify the theory. A series of laboratory experiments were conducted at the National Sun Yen-sen University to study the waveform evolution of continuous IWs propagation on the flat bottom and across a trapezoidal obstacle. Surface waves were generated on a density stratified fluid system in a wave flume, from which IWs were induced indirectly to investigate their wave properties associated with their propagation . The experimental results are then used to determine the maximum depth which could be affected by surface waves in different wave conditions(wave height and period), as well as the amplitude of the IWs induced. The relationship between them are then presented in graphic form. Experiments were also conducted in uniform density and stratified fluid system with a trapezoidal obstacle. The results reveal that (1)long-period surface waves were susceptible to the interaction with the IWs in a stratified system, thus rendering wave height reduction, and (2)short-period surface waves interactions with their IWs counterparts was insignificant, hence yielded wave height similar to that in uniform density fluid system. Moreover, experiments were also conducted to study for long and short period IW propagated over pseudo slope-shelf(using trapezoidal obstacle). The results show that the variation in the IWs significantly affected the strength of internal hydraulic jump and vortices on the front slope and subsequent waveform inversion on the horizontal plateau. For IWs with short period, the horizontal distance on the plateau affected by the IWs was shirter and the total time of wave-topography interaction decreased.

Seismic Response of Short Period Structures and the Development of a Self-Centering Truss Moment Frame with Energy Dissipating Elements for Improved Performance

Darling, Scott Christian 17 September 2012 (has links)
Traditionally, earthquake engineering has focused on protecting the lives of building occupants by utilizing inelasticity in structural members and connections to dissipate seismic energy and provide protection against collapse. This design concept is partially based on the equal displacement concept, which states that peak drifts for an inelastic system will be approximately equal to the peak drifts of an elastic system with the same initial stiffness for a given dynamic loading. This is a concept that has been shown to work for structures with natural period greater than about 1.0 seconds, but does not hold true for shorter period structures. An additional consequence of this design methodology is that conventional seismic systems do not explicitly limit the amount of structural damage, or offer a repair method that allows continued use of a structure after an earthquake. In fact, the structural damage distributed throughout a building and permanent residual drifts can make a conventional structure difficult if not financially unreasonable to repair after a large earthquake. These are both concerns facing the seismic design community that are investigated as a part of this thesis. First, a computational study was conducted on short period structural systems to investigate the relationship between initial structural period and collapse potential. The investigation utilizes a statistically based analysis methodology to investigate a study of single degree of freedom (SDOF) systems with periods between 0.1 seconds and 1.0 seconds. The SDOF models were developed using an elastic-linear hardening model with post-yield stiffness ranging between -10% and +10% of the initial stiffness. This part of the study was done to gain a general understanding of the influence of natural period and post-yield behavior on the collapse performance of structural systems and appropriate response modification factors. Next, a study of multi-degree of freedom (MDOF) masonry structures with short periods was conducted to examine how the SDOF trends translated to realistic MDOF structures. Based on these two studies, recommendations were made for how current U.S. building codes could be modified to account for the behavior of short period structures. Next, a new self-centering system that builds on the concepts of previous self-centering systems is developed. The self-centering truss moment frame (SC-TMF) was developed with the goal of providing self-centering capability while concentrating inelastic deformation in replaceable structural fuses. These goals are accomplished while mitigating a number of issues seen in other self-centering systems, such as deformation incompatibility with gravity framing, limited deformation capacity, and unusual field construction techniques. The development of the SC-TMF includes a set of preliminary monotonic pushover analyses and nonlinear time history analyses to confirm the expected behavior of the system. Next, a mechanics investigation was undertaken where static pushover analyses (monotonic and cyclic) were used to help derive equations to predict system behavior, such as strength and stiffness. Finally, a parametric study was conducted to gain a better understanding of how various design decisions influence structural behavior. It was shown that the SC-TMF was a viable seismic system for controlling residual drifts and concentrating inelasticity in replaceable fuse elements while mitigating the issues seen in other conventional self-centering systems. / Master of Science

Lafrance, Angélique 09 1900 (has links)
In this study, we propose a method to observe lexical changes (neology and necrology) in English in the field of computer science in short-period diachrony. Since computer science evolves quickly, we believe that a short-period diachronic approach (over a period of 10 years) lends itself to studying the terminology of that field. For this purpose, we built a corpus in English with articles taken from computer science magazines for the general public, PC Magazine and PC World, covering the years 2001 to 2010. The corpus was divided into two subcorpora: 2001-2005 and 2006-2010. We chose year 2006 as a pivot, because Facebook (the most popular social network) has been open to the public since that year, and we believed that would cause quick changes in computer science terminology. For each of the magazines, we selected one issue per year from 2001 to 2010, for a total of about 540,000 words for the 2001-2005 subcorpus and about 390,000 words for the 2006-2010 subcorpus. Each subcorpus was submitted to term extractor TermoStat to extract nominal, verbal and adjectival term candidates. We proceeded to three experiment groups, according to the reference corpus used. In the first experiment group (Exp1), we compared each subcorpus to the default reference corpus in TermoStat for English, a British National Corpus (BNC) extract. In the second experiment group (Exp2), we compared each subcorpus to the whole computer science corpus we created. In the third experiment group (Exp3), we compared the two subcorpora with each other. After cleaning up the term candidates lists thus obtained to retain only the terms in the field of computer science, and generating data about relative frequency and relative specificity of the terms between subcorpora, we proceeded to the validation of novelty and obsolescence of the first terms of each list to determine whether the proposed method works better with a particular type of lexical change (novelty or obsolescence), part of speech (nominal, verbal or adjectival term), or experiment group. The validation results show that the method seems to work better with neology extraction than with necrology extraction. Also, we had better results with nominal and adjectival terms than with verbal terms. Finally, we had much more results with Exp1 than with Exp2 and Exp3.

Emissões de dióxido de carbono durante a implantação de culturas em dois sistemas de preparo em latossolo vermelho do rio grande do sul / Carbon dioxide emissions during crop- establishment period in two tillage systems in oxisol of rio grande do sul state

Pes, Luciano Zucuni 19 December 2011 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / In farming systems with annual crops, the crop establishment period is characterized by intense soil disturbance in conventional tillage (CT) or disturbance only in the sowing line, in case of no-tillage (NT). The soil tillage enhances the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions whose should be investigated extensively during these short-term (scale days) that has implications in the carbon (C) dynamic in crop residues-soil-atmosphere system. This work was divided in two studies and they aimed quantify the role of main sources of soil C-CO2 (C labile soil and C crop-residues) and investigate the emission in different seasons. This study was carried out in a long-term experiment (installed in 1985) at Fundação Centro de Experimentação e Pesquisa (FUNDACEP) in a clay Typic Haplorthox. The first study evaluated the emissions of C-CO2 during 15 days of the spring 2009 and the fall 2010 using closed dynamic flow chamber with infrared analyzer. The crop residue input was black oat (Avena strigosa Schreber) and soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) in spring 2009 and fall 2010, respectively. The second study evaluated the C-CO2 emissions during 23 days in fall 2007, 21 days in spring 2007, 15 days in spring 2009 and 15 days in fall 2010, also using closed dynamic chamber with infrared analyzer. The crop residues input were soybean, black oat + common vetch (Vicia sativa (L.) Walp.), black oat and soybean in fall 2007, spring 2007, spring 2009 and fall 2010, respectively. The temperature and soil moisture were also evaluated. The crop-residues were the main C-CO2 emission sources during the crop establishment period. Consequently, the soil C-labile exposed by tillage operations in the Oxisol had restricted contribution to the C-CO2 emissions. This result is probably related with organo-mineral C association that is frequently reported in soils with high Fe/Al oxides concentration and clay texture. In relation to the season effect, the crop-establishment period in spring had higher C-CO2 emissions than to fall.

Investigation of periodic Mg doping in (0001) (Ga,In)N/GaN superlattices grown on by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy (PAMBE) for hole injection in light emitting diodes

Kusdemir, Erdi 01 February 2022 (has links)
In this thesis, the complex mechanisms for the incorporation of Mg and In in (Ga,In)N/GaN(0001) heterostructures prepared by PA-MBE were investigated by morphological, optical, and electrical characterization methods. Furthermore, the implementation of (Ga,In)N/GaN SPSLs as a HIL or as the active region in conventional LED structures have been studied. In-situ measurements demonstrate that the desorption of In increases in the presence of both, N and Mg on the GaN(0001) surface. Further, (Ga,In)N/GaN SLs with Mg-doping grown by PAMBE and their characterization was carried out by QMS, XRD, and SIMS. A better surface morphology was obtained for the (Ga,In)N/GaN SLs in comparison to a (Ga,In)N layer homogeneously doped with Mg. Although, a notable decrease of the In content in the (Ga,In)N ML was revealed when Mg was supplied simultaneously to In. At the same time, the Mg concentration increased in the presence of In, which can possibly be attributed to a surfactant effect. For the SL that had only its (Ga,In)N QWs doped with Mg, a maximum Mg concentration of 2.6 × 1022 cm 3 for a 1 ML thick (Ga,In)N:Mg layer was deduced from SIMS measurements. Additionally, similar results have achieved later by another set of experiments. Thermopower studies revealed the p-type conductivity of the delta doped SL and of the SL structures with 20% of the QB doped by Mg. Additionally, a rectifying behavior with an ideality factor lower than 10 was demonstrated for the (Ga,In)N/GaN SL structures with QW fully doped. Based on the electrical characterization, three different LED structures were fabricated based on the most promising Mg-doped (Ga,In)N SL structures (delta doped SL, and 20% QB doped SL) and characterized.

Development Of Forward Flight Trim And Longitudinal Dynamic Stability Codes And Their Application To A Uh-60 Helicopter

Caliskan, Sevinc 01 February 2009 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis describes the development of a series of codes for trim and longitudinal stability analysis of a helicopter in forward flight. In general, particular use of these codes can be made for parametric investigation of the effects of the external and internal systems integrated to UH-60 helicopters. However, in this thesis the trim analysis results are obtained for a clean UH-60 configuration and the results are compared with the flight test data that were acquired by ASELSAN, Inc. The first of the developed trim codes, called TRIM-CF, is based on closedform equations which give the opportunity of having quick results. The second code stems from the trim code of Prouty. That code is modified and improved during the course of this study based on the theories outlined in [3], and the resultant code is named TRIM-BE. These two trim codes are verified by solving the trim conditions of the example helicopter of [3]. Since it is simpler and requires fewer input parameters, it is more often more convenient to use the TRIM-CF code. This code is also verified by analyzing the Bo105 helicopter with the specifications given in [2]. The results are compared with the Helisim results and flight test data given in this reference. The trim analysis results of UH-60 helicopter are obtained by the TRIM-CF code and compared with flight test data. A forward flight longitudinal dynamic stability code, called DYNA-STAB, is also developed in the thesis. This code also uses the methods presented in [3]. It solves the longitudinal part of the whole coupled matrix of equations of motion of a helicopter in forward flight. The coupling is eliminated by linearization. The trim analysis results are used as inputs to the dynamic stability code and the dynamic stability characteristics of a forward flight trim case of the example helicopter [3] are analyzed. The forward flight stability code is applied to UH-60 helicopter. The codes are easily applicable to a helicopter equipped with external stores. The application procedures are also explained in this thesis.

Dynamic Stability and Handling Qualities of Small Unmanned-Aerial-Vehicles UNMANNED-AERIAL-VEHICLES

Foster, Tyler Michael 07 December 2004 (has links) (PDF)
General aircraft dynamic stability theory was used to predict the natural frequencies, damping ratios and time constants of the dynamic modes for three specific small UAVs with wingspans on the scale from 0.6 meters to 1.2 meters. Using USAF DatCom methods, a spreadsheet program for predicting the dynamic stability and handling qualities of small UAVs was created for use in the design stage of new small UAV concept development. This program was verified by inputting data for a Cessna-182, and by then comparing the program output with that of a similar program developed by DAR Corporation. Predictions with acceptable errors were made for all of the dynamic modes except for the spiral mode. The design tool was also used to verify and develop dynamic stability and handling qualities design guidelines for small UAV designers. Using this design tool, it was observed that small UAVs tend to exhibit higher natural frequencies of oscillation for all of the dynamic modes. Comparing the program outputs with military handling qualities specifications, the small UAVs at standard configurations fell outside the range of acceptable handling qualities for short-period mode natural frequency, even though multiple test pilots rated the flying qualities as acceptable. Using dynamic scaling methods to adjust the current military standards for the short period mode, a new scale was proposed specifically for small UAVs. This scale was verified by conducting flight tests of three small UAVs at various configurations until poor handling qualities were observed. These transitions were observed to occur at approximately the boundary predicted by the new, adjusted scale.
