Enhancing Aquaculture Sustainability Through Water Reuse and Biological Treatment

Kuhn, David Dwight 30 April 2008 (has links)
Overfishing of natural fisheries is a global issue that is becoming more urgent as the human population increases exponentially. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, over 70% of the world's seafood species are fully exploited or depleted. This high demand for seafood protein is not going away; and, in fact, an astonishing one out of five people in this world depend on this source of protein. Traditional aquaculture practices use pond and flow-through systems which are often responsible for discharging pollutants into the environment. Furthermore, aquacultural feeds often contain high levels of fish protein, so the demand on wild fisheries is not completely eased. Even though traditional aquaculture has these drawbacks, there is a significant movement towards more sustainable practices. For example, implementing recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) maximizes the reuse of culture water which decreases water demand and minimizes the levels of pollutants being discharged to the environment. And, alternative proteins (e.g., soy bean) are replacing the fish and seafood proteins in aquaculture diets. Accordingly, the research described in this dissertation focused on maximizing the reuse of freshwater fish effluent to culture marine shrimp. More specifically, by using suspended-growth biological reactors to treat a tilapia effluent waste stream and to generate microbial flocs that could be used to support shrimp culture. This RAS technology will decrease water consumption by increasing the amount of recycled water and will also improve effluent water quality. The biomass generated in the bioreactors could be used to feed shrimp with an alternative source of protein. Treating fish effluent to be reused to culture shrimp while producing this alternative feed, could significantly decrease operational costs and make these operations more sustainable. Understanding which ions are critical for the survival and normal growth of marine shrimp in freshwater effluents is essential. It is also very important to understand how to convert an effluent's organic matter into food for shrimp. Results from studies revealed that the marine shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei, can be raised in freshwater effluent when supplemented with specific ions and wet microbial flocs fed directly to shrimp can enhance growth in shrimp fed a restricted ration of commercial feed. The treatability of the tilapia effluent using suspended-growth, biological reactors and nutritional analysis of the generated biomass were also reported. Carbon supplementation enhanced reactor performance and microbial floc generation. These microbial flocs also proved to be a superior feed ingredient when dried and incorporated into a pellet feed. / Ph. D.

Acute toxicity of ammonia and nitrite to Pacific White Shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) at low salinities

Schuler, Dominic 11 June 2008 (has links)
The Pacific white leg shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei, is a potential species for low salinity inland aquaculture. Due to several independent variables, such as species, age, size, salinity and pH, that must be taken into account, there are gaps in the literature pertaining to the toxicity of ammonia and nitrite to shrimp. This study was conducted to investigate the individual and combined effects of ammonia and nitrite on L. vannamei postlarvae (25-45 days old) at 10 ppt salinity, 28 C and a pH of 7.8. The independent variables were salinity, total ammonia as nitrogen (TAN) and nitrite-N (NO₂-N), separately and combined. The TAN experiments were conducted at 18 and 10 ppt salinity while the NO₂-N test was conducted at 10 ppt salinity. Combined TAN and NO2 tests were also conducted at 10 ppt salinity. The LC50 values for TAN at 18 ppt salinity, TAN at 10 ppt salinity, and NO2-N at 10 ppt were observed to be 42.92, 39.72 mg/L (2.26 and 2.09 mg/L unionized ammonia-N), and 153.75 mg/L, respectively. When NO₂- N was adjusted to the LOEC level and TAN concentrations were varied, synergistic effects were observed, with an LC50 calculated to be 28.2 mg/L TAN (1.49 mg/L unionized ammonia-N). However, when the ammonia level was adjusted to the LOEC and nitrite was varied, antagonistic effects were observed with an LC50 calculated to be 163.3 mg/L NO₂-N. The results suggest that further investigations into the combined effects of ammonia and nitrite at varying concentrations and lower salinities will be important in developing "standard operating procedures" for the shrimp industry. / Master of Science

Effects of river discharge and marine environmental factors on the brown shrimp fishery in the northern Gulf of Mexico

Pollack, Adam George 11 December 2009 (has links)
Regression analyses and delta-lognormal models were used to investigate whether river discharge and environmental variables significantly affected relative abundance of brown shrimp, Farfantepenaeus aztecus, in the northern Gulf of Mexico. Significant negative relationships were found between mean river flow during winter and spring months and catch rates (CPUE) off Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi/Alabama. However, during the same months significant positive relationships between CPUE and the variation in mean river discharge were found for each state. In Texas and Louisiana, delta-lognormal models revealed depth zone was the most significant variable (P≤0.001) in describing distribution, while time of day (P≤0.001) was most significant in describing CPUE and also distribution and CPUE in Mississippi/Alabama. These results suggest that brown shrimp relative abundance is effected by river discharge, while gulf-wide environmental variables exert no influence, except dissolved oxygen concentrations affecting distribution off Louisiana.

Optimization of the Quality and Safety of Cooked Seafood Products

Brookmire, Lauren 29 October 2010 (has links)
Seafood products are a common consumer choice and a variety of cooking methods are used in seafood preparation. Although often cooked, products such as shrimp and salmon remain some of the most common carriers of foodborne disease. Cooking these products at elevated temperatures efficiently reduces foodborne disease causing pathogens to a safe level, but applying too much heat to seafood products can produce an overcooked, low quality food. It is necessary to investigate the cooking processes used in seafood preparation and establish appropriate consumer cooking parameters that optimize both the quality and microbial safety of the products. To achieve these goals, this study develops mathematical models for the inactivation of Salmonella sp., change in quality attributes, and the product heating profiles during the cooking process for shrimp and Atlantic salmon. Studies were performed to monitor the product heating profile during the baking and boiling of shrimp and the baking and pan-frying of salmon. Product color, texture, moisture content, mass loss, and pressed juice were evaluated during the cooking processes as the products reached the internal temperature recommended by the FDA. Studies were also performed on the inactivation of Salmonella cocktails in homogenized and non-homogenized shrimp and salmon. To effectively predict inactivation during cooking, the Bigelow, Fermi distribution, and Weibull distribution models were applied to the homogenized data. Minimum cooking temperatures necessary to destroy Salmonella sp. in shrimp and salmon were also determined. The heating profiles of the two products were modeled using the finite difference method. Temperature data directly from the modeled heating profiles was then used in the kinetic modeling of quality change and Salmonella inactivation during cooking. It was concluded that consumers need to judge the doneness of both shrimp and Atlantic salmon by the lightness factor (CIE L*) of the core region of both products. The core region's lightness factor, which a consumer may consider as opaqueness, more accurately represented the thermal doneness than the external qualities. The FDA's current recommendations for a 3 log reduction for intact seafood products and homogenized seafood products were each analyzed. Results were in agreement with the recommended 68°C plus 15 seconds for homogenized products. For intact products, shrimp inactivation results were in agreement with the recommended 63°C plus 15 seconds, but intact salmon achieved only a 2 log reduction by the temperature-time combination. It was also found that predictive models can effectively describe the survival data for two Salmonella cocktails. The Weibull distribution model, which takes into account any tailing effect in survival data, fit the survival data of Salmonella in shrimp acceptably. The Fermi distribution model, which incorporates any shouldering effect in data, was an acceptable fit for the inactivation data for salmon. Using three-dimensional slab geometry for salmon fillets and two-dimensional frustum cone geometry for shrimp resulted in acceptable model predictions of thermal distributions for the cooking methods studied. The temperature data attained directly from the modeled heating profiles was effectively used in the predictive quality and inactivation models. Agreeable first-order kinetic models were formulated for Î L and Î C color parameters in shrimp and salmon. Other kinetic models formulated were for texture change in salmon and pressed juice in both salmon and shrimp. Using a fixed inactivation level of 3 logs and a fixed quality of 95% best quality, optimal cooking conditions were determined that both provide a high quality product and assure microbial safety. Based on the specific cooking methods in this study, the optimal boiling times for extra jumbo and colossal sized shrimp were 100 seconds and 159 seconds, respectfully. The optimal oven baking times were 233 seconds for extra jumbo shrimp and 378 seconds for colossal shrimp. For Atlantic salmon, the optimal oven baking time was 1132 seconds and the optimal pan frying time was 399 seconds. / Master of Science

Improving Disease Resistance for Shrimp Through Application of Probiotics in Feed

Choi, Moonyoung 12 June 2015 (has links)
Diseases affecting shrimp contribute to billions of dollars of economic loss yearly to the aquaculture industry. Recently, one of the primary causative agents of disease has been Vibrio parahaemolyticus; in 2009, a new strain causing Early Mortality Syndrome (EMS) or acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease (AHPND) in shrimp emerged. Shrimp losses attributed to pathogens can be greatly reduced through probiotic use, which are known to act as natural immune enhancers and promote pathogen resistance. However, research on probiotic treatment against EMS disease is lacking. The overall project goal was to improve intensive shrimp production through direct application of probiotics in aquaculture feeds. The value of probiotics for the shrimp industry was evaluated by (1) reducing severity or mortality of V. parahaemolyticus disease in shrimp, (2) qPCR confirmation of Bacillus spore germination in shrimp gut, and (3) probiotic effectiveness evaluation for improving disease resistance. The virulence of several Vibrio spp. strains was examined and it was concluded the V. parahaemolyticus strain identified as the causative agent of EMS was the most lethal; EMS-infected shrimp exhibited 100% mortality within 36-hours of feed inoculation. The number of bacterial cells added to feed directly correlated with pathogenicity and only cells, not filtrate, was capable of causing death. Probiotic strains were evaluated and it was concluded that probiotic strains A, A/B blend, and B were the best candidates for promoting disease resistance against EMS. This research will provide the shrimp farming industry with information vital to developing a means for reducing economic loss from Vibrio-infected shrimp. / Master of Science in Life Sciences

Constraints and challenges for ensuring food security in the northern and south-western region of Bangladesh: A policy, hazards, and climate change perspective

Ahmed, Zia 10 May 2024 (has links) (PDF)
Achieving food security in Bangladesh remains an arduous task, as the country struggles with several challenges. These challenges include the effects of climate change, occurrence of natural disasters, lack of proper access to credit facilities, and the anthropogenic modification of the agricultural landscape. The vulnerability of agricultural practice in the northern regions to drought, flood, and riverbank erosion, as well as the increased occurrence of coastal surges, waterlogging, cyclones, coastal floods, shrimp aquaculture and soil salinity in the southwestern region, poses a major threat to Bangladesh’s attainment of food security. In this context, we analyze the anthropogenic factors such as land use and land covers change, waterlogging, soil salinity and agriculture credit facilities which combinedly affecting the food security in the southwestern and northern regions of Bangladesh. Findings revealed that in the southwestern regions agricultural lands have decreased because of an increase in shrimp farming. Waterlogging and soil salinity are increasing due to increased shrimp farms also for poor drainage infrastructure and human modification. In our studied three interior coastal districts agricultural land in 2011 was 19,657.12 acres, 12,750.14 acres and 38,774.70 acres which changed to 12,668.70 acres (-36%), 7,151.27 acres (-44%) and 32,809.30 acres (-16%) in 2021. By utilizing CMIP5 data and RCP 4.5 scenarios, we also projected temperature and precipitation in the northern and southwestern regions for the years 2030, 2040, 2050, and 2060 the results indicated substantial variations between pre- and post-monsoon temperatures, with projected maximum, minimum, and mean temperature differences of > 5°C, < 3°C, and < 4°C, respectively. Structural equation modeling reveals that shrimp farming has a significant negative impact on farmers' income and dietary habits. Land use and land cover analyses in the exposed coastal area indicate that agricultural land has decreased by 321.83 km2 over more than thirty years. Structural equation modeling also revealed that agricultural credit influences the food security of marginal farmers. Our study serves as a guide for policymakers in Bangladesh and other developing countries, providing insights into the implementation of effective and sustainable agriculture and climate policies to address the constraints and challenges associated with food security.

Ocorrência de óxidos de colesterol e análise do perfil lipídico em camarão salgado-seco / Occurrence of cholesterol oxides and lipid profile in salted and dried shrimp

Sampaio, Geni Rodrigues 05 April 2004 (has links)
Foods submitted to technological processes that require high temperature present a great potential for production of cholesterol oxides (COPs). The objective of this work was to determine the occurrence of cholesterol oxidation products and to analyze the lipidic profile in salted-dried shrimp. Fifty samples of salted-dried shrimp were evaluated, and the cholesterol oxides were quantified by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Cholesterol and COPs (7ß-hydroxycholesterol, 7?- hydroxycholesterol, 7-Ketocholesterol and 25- hydroxycholesterol) were simultaneously analyzed. The fatty acids profile was determined by gas chromatography, and for the evaluation of lipidic oxidation the TBARS method was used. The results indicated that the samples contained: 7ß-OH (34.63-72,56 µg/g), 7?-OH (5.02-12.12µg/g), 7-Keto (7.44-32.68 µg/g) and 25-OH (2.37-22.88 µg/g). These data indicated that 7?-OH was the predominant product. The amount of COPs in the samples varied considerably, ranging from 4.52 to 77.30 µg/g. Regarding to the total cholesterol content and the average concentration of TBARS, the results varied from 73.88 to 247.69 mg/100g, and 0.023 to 1.30 mgMA/Kg, respectively. This study indicated that the samples were oxidized, by the presence of COPs and the values of TBARS as well. Such oxidation was probably initiated under inadequate conditions of processing and storage. These results reinforced the need of revaluation of the fishing handling procedures, particularly the salted-dried shrimp, including all the stages - from the capture to the de shelf-life determination, in order to minimize the oxidative reactions.

As rochas dessa unidade pertencem a duas séries distintas: série calcioalcalina (rochas intermediárias a ácidas); e série transicional (rochas básicas, ora de afinidade toleítica, ora alcalina). As análises geocronológicas U-Pb SHRIMP foram realizadas no Research School of Earth Science (ANU/Canberra/Austrália). / The Ribeira Orogen is a complex orogenic belt developed during the Brasiliano Orogeny, along the southern and southeastern borders of the São Francisco Craton, and is subdivided into four tectono-stratigraphic terranes: 1) the Occidental Terrane, taken as the reworked margin of São Francisco paleocontinent, displays an internal tectonic organization with two crustal scale thrust sheets (Andrelândia and Juiz de Fora); 2) the Oriental Terrane, comprises another crotonic block or microplate and includes the Rio Negro magmatic arc; 3) the Paraíba do Sul Terrane, which comprises the uppermost thrust slice of the central segment of the belt; and 4) the Cabo Frio Terrane, which occupies a restrict area at the coast of Rio de Janeiro State, records a late docking event. Within all the forementioned terranes, it can be identified three litho-tectonic units: pre-1.8 Ga basement units (orthognaisses and orthogranulites); 2) post-1.8 Ga supracrustal rocks; and 3) brasiliano granitoids and charnockitoids. Mantiqueira Complex comprises a great variety of tonalitic to granitic orthogneisses and minor orthoamphibolites. This unit comprises the basement rocks of the Andrelândia Megasequence within the Andrelândia tectonic domain. Lithogeochemical data of 68 samples, including orthogneisses and metabasites, indicate that the Mantiqueira Complex comprises two different series: calcalkaline series (intermediate to acid calcalkaline rocks); and transicional series (alkaline to tholeiitic basic rocks). Based on petrological criteria, quantitative analysis and [La/Yb]N values, it was possible to verify that the Mantiqueira Complex is heterogeneous and includes many petrogenetic groups. The transicional series comprises two groups: 1) tholeitic basic rocks, with [La/Yb]N between 2,13 and 4,72 (E-MORB and/or Intraplate type); and 2) alkaline basic rocks, with [La/Yb]N between 11,79 and 22,78. The calcalkaline rocks of the Mantiqueira Complex may be grouped into five different petrogenetic groups: 1) migmatitic quartz dioritic to tonalitic orthogneisses, with [La/Yb]N between 11,37 and 38,26; 2) banded quartz dioritic to granodioritic orthogneisses, with [La/Yb]N between 4,35 and 9,28; 3) tonalitic to granitic homogeneous orthogneisses, with [La/Yb]N between 16,57 and 38,59; 4) white tonalitic/trondhjemitic to granitic leucogneisses, with [La/Yb]N between 46,69 and 65,06; and 5) pinkish orthogneiss of tonalitic to granitic composition and [La/Yb]N between 82,70 and 171,36. U-Pb SHRIMP geocronological analysis were performed at the Research School of Earth Science (ANU/Canberra/Australia). Paleoproterozoic ages, interpreted as protoliths cristalization ages, were obtained for rocks from both the calcalkaline and transitional series. Obtained results display a range of cristalization ages from 2139 35 to 2143,4 9,4, to the rocks of the transitional series, and from 2126,4 8 to 2204,5 6,7, for those of the calcalkaline one. Among all studied rocks, only one (sample JF-CM-516 IV) yielded discordant archean zircons (292916 Ma), interpreted as inherited ones. However, evidences of archean zircons were obtained from zircons of other samples. All studied samples record a neoproterozoic metamorphic event in the interval from 548 17 Ma to 590,5 7,7 Ma, which is consistent with the M1 metamorphic event (from 550 to 590 Ma), contemporaneous to the main collision of the central segment of Ribeira Belt (collision between the Occidental and Oriental Terranes (Heilbron, 1993 e Heilbron et al., 1995).
