The Effect of Bonded Reinforcing Steel on Increase in Stress in Unbonded Prestressing Steel at Ultimate State

Wei, Sisi 19 March 2013 (has links)
To investigate the benefit induced by adding a small amount of bonded reinforcing steel into a fully unbonded prestressed concrete beam, two well-founded and straightforward approaches for predicting tendon stress are proposed. The primary approach utilizes a flexural analysis to calculate member deformation. The supplementary approach employs a truss model to consider the additional member deformation due to shear force. Both approaches use a simplified iterative method. With these two approaches, a systematic parametric study is conducted to investigate the effects of various factors. The results indicate that adding little bonded reinforcement does significantly increase the stress increment in unbonded tendons at ultimate state for one-point loading as expected. Moreover, a lower span-to-depth ratio, the use of high-strength concrete, and a smaller mechanical reinforcement ratio also raise the stress increment.

Análise numérica de pilares de aço isolados e inseridos em paredes em situação de incêndio / Numerical analysis of isolated and embedded on walls steel columns under fire situation

Simões, Yagho de Souza 10 April 2018 (has links)
In a fire situation, steel columns embedded on walls demonstrate a different thermo- structural response from those isolated, so that the subdivision offers an increase of its fire resistance. Few studies have been developed in order to evaluate the performance of columns in contact with walls, and those already performed showed results that still leave doubts about these elements. Therefore, this work proposes to analyze, in a numerical context, the behavior of isolated and embedded on walls steel columns in fire using the software ABAQUS 6.14 as a modeling tool. The thermo-structural modeling, considering the wall only as a compartmentation element, has presented poor results, which leads to the conclusion that the masonry has influence on the structural response of columns subjected to fire situation. For this reason, when inserting springs in order to control the axial displacement of the walls in numerical modeling, the obtained results were satisfactory. Further analyzes in respect of the load factor influence and the level of axial and rotational stiffness on the fire resistance of columns were also performed. For all the models, it was verified a negative influence of the load factor when increased. However, when it comes to the axial restriction, it was verified that its presence had more influence in the fire resistance of the structural element despite of its intensity, once the increase of this parameter did not affect the critical time of the columns, for most cases analyzed. In respect to rotational stiffness, it was proven favorable to the fire resistance. In addition, this research employed the simplified method presented in the ABNT NBR 14323: 2013 to calculate the temperature evolution in steel profiles. It was concluded that it presents good results only for the columns with uniform heating in the cross section. For this reason, a new methodology to calculate the temperature of columns in contact with wall was proposed, validated by numerical tests.

Stabilité des digues sous chargement sismique : vers une nouvelle génération de méthodes simplifiées / Stability of embankments under seismic loading : towards a new generation of simplified methods

Durand, Capucine 12 July 2018 (has links)
Embankments are strategic facilities that, among other things, protect population from flooding and canalize rivers for energy production or for irrigation concerns. Since their rupture can lead to terrible consequences, they must remain stable, especially in case of earthquake. However, given the very large length of embankments, it is rarely possible to conduct complete investigations and complex numerical models in regions of moderate seismicity. Therefore, simplified tools to estimate the dynamic response of embankments using accessible embankments’ features are necessary to estimate their capacity to resist seismic loadings. Existing simplified methods, generally developed to assess the dynamic response of embankment-dams, turn out to be inappropriate to study the particular case of embankments along rivers – or other types of embankment, with small height and large length. The majority of these simplified methods do not take into account site effects: they assume the presence of rock directly at the base of the embankment, whereas most of large length embankments are located in alluvial valleys. Two methods only - Sarma(1979) and Papadimitriou(2014) - take into account the interaction between the embankment and its soil foundation. However, the first one relies on strong assumptions (among others, that the bedrock is considered rigid and that the viscous damping is supposed to be both spatially uniform and very large) and the second one is limited to tall embankments (higher than 20 si{m}).The method developed in this thesis relies on assumptions that are more realistic: it considers geometries adapted to large length embankments, it accounts for the presence of a soil foundation and includes an energy dissipation process consistent with expected levels of strain. A numerical parametric study is performed based on the computation with the spectral element method of the viscoelastic response of a large set of embankments spanning a wide range of geometrical and mechanical properties. In order to take into account nonlinearity, damping and shear modulus reduction are adapted in each point of the numerical models according to the results of a set of 1D linear equivalent computations. A new simplified method is derived from the obtained numerical results using artificial neural networks. Abacuses are produced from the neural networks so that engineers can have at their disposal a visual tool. This thesis leads to a simplified method that uses some accessible features of embankments as input parameters. The ability of classical geophysical methods to provide those input parameters is further estimated on four sites corresponding to different realistic configurations.

Vertical-flow constructed wetlands for the treatment of wastewater and stormwater from combined sewer systems

Arias Lopez, José Luis 30 September 2013 (has links) (PDF)
French vertical-flow constructed wetlands (VFCW) directly treating raw wastewater are known to perform well on for SS, COD and nitrification. They are also known to robustly cope with hydraulic overloads during rainfall events. Although numerous systems have been installed in areas equipped with a combined sewer, the limits of stormwater acceptance remain ill-defined and need to be improved. Looking at the various VFCW designs and usages reported in the literature, it is difficult to draw any consensus on their hydraulic limits. Consequently, designing VFCW to accept hydraulic overloads is a complex task, as local context strongly impacts inlet flows produced during rainfall events. Dynamic models appear a requisite for filter design in such cases. Numerical CW models have essentially focused on horizontal flow, with few attempting to study VFCW dynamics which are more commonly tackled via mechanistic models. Although mechanistic models are powerful tools for describing processes within the VFCW, they are generally too complicated to be readily used by designers. The choice between detailed description and easy handling will depend on the modelling aims. If the aim is a global design tool, simplified models offer a good alternative. However, the simplified models geared to studying VFCW dynamics are extremely reduced. They are easy-handling for design and well-adapted to specific purposes (combined sewer overflow -CSO- treatment) but not necessarily to VFCW treating combined sewer wastewater, where long-term infiltration rates vary significantly. Consequently, this PhD thesis work focused on developing a simplified hydraulic model of VFCW to guide designers through the process of adapting VFCW systems to treat domestic wastewater in both dry and rain events. The simplified model makes it possible to link (i) hydraulics, by simulation of ponding time variations, (ii) biological performances, by establishing "dysfunction alerts" based on treatment performance assessment and variations in online N forms effluent from the young VFCW. These "dysfunction alerts" plot the maximal hydraulic load that a filter can accept without compromising its biological activity. The simplified model was used to model long-term hydraulics in the VFCW (i) to analyze the impact of local context and filter design on hydraulic overload acceptance (using "dysfunction alerts" and bypass discharges) and (ii) to propose VFCW designs for accepting hydraulic overload in different contexts. The modelling demonstrates that VFCW can limit days with bypass discharges to less than 20 times per year without jeopardizing filter performances. Moreover, the most problematic scenario on stormwater treatment remains a watershed with high imperviousness coefficient and low slope under a Bretagne-type climate, demonstrating that the filter is more sensitive to periodicity and duration than to intensity of rainfall events.

Prise en compte des contraintes résiduelles dans le dimensionnement en fatigue oligocyclique par des méthodes simplifiées / Taking residual stresses into account using simplified methods in low cycle fatigue

Levieil, Bruno 03 November 2016 (has links)
Residual stresses are inherent to the manufacturing processes and can have a strong effect on the fatigue life of structures. Therefore, they shall be taken into account in fatigue design. In this PhD thesis, a fast design method is developed to take residual stresses into account in low cycle fatigue, either under tensile or compressive loadings. The main idea is to calculate analytically the stabilised stress-strain curve, at the critical point, by using a simplified method for confined plasticity. This method is based on a localisation law that extends energetic methods like Neuber to general multiaxial stress states. The localization law links the applied load to the local load at the critical point. It has to be identified on a finite element analysis of the structure under monotonic load. For this purpose, the elasto-plastic behaviour of the material is characterised from one single tensile test with loadings-unloadings. The behaviour law, identified sequentially, includes isotropic and kinematic hardenings with thresholds. This improves the stabilised mean stress prediction, which is used in the proposed fatigue criterion to represent the influence of the load ratio on the fatigue life. This criterion is identified on purely alternated tests (Rε=-1), and then validated under various tensile load ratios (Rε>-1) as well as compressive load ratios (Rε<-1). The methodology is validated on plate specimens with two semi-circular notches, which initially present different residual stresses states. The experimental evolution of local stresses during cyclic compressive (Rσ=-∞) and tensile (Rσ=0) repeated applied loads have been studied experimentally and compared to the numerical and analytical predictions. The same work has been achieved on the fatigue lives predictions. It shows that a slight conservatism, independent from the load ratio and the initial state, is obtained. Finally, an application of the method on T-Joints is realised to enlarge the scope of the method.

A Comperative Assessment Of Available Methods For Seismic Performance Evaluation Of Buried Structures

Ozcebe, Ali Guney 01 August 2009 (has links) (PDF)
In the last three decades, seismic performance assessment of buried structures has evolved through the following stages : i) buried structures are not prone to seismically-induced damages, thus no need for detailed investigations, ii) eliminating soil-structure-earthquake interaction and use of seismically-induced free field ground deformations directly as the basis for seismic demand, thus producing conservative results, and finally iii) soil-structure and earthquake interaction models incorporating both kinematic and inertial interactions. As part of soil-structure and earthquake interacting models, simplified frame analysis established the state of practice and is widely used. Within the confines of this thesis, the results of simplified frame analysis based response of buried structures are compared with those of 2-D finite element dynamic analyses. For the purpose, 1-D dynamic and 2-D pseudo-dynamic analyses of free field and buried structural systems are performed for a number of generic soil, structure and earthquake combinations. The analyses results revealed that, in general, available closed form solutions are in pretty good agreement with the results of finite element analyses. However, due to the fact that dynamic analyses can model both kinematic and inertial effects / it should be preffered for the design of critical structures.

Porovnání cen venkovních úprav na pozemku ve funkčním celku s rodinným domem stanovených nákladovým a zjednodušeným způsobem ve vybrané lokalitě v Brně / Comparison of Prices for External Works on a Land Parcel in a Functional Unit with a Family House Determined via the Cost Method and in a Simplified Manner at a Chosen Location in Brno

Říha, Milan January 2012 (has links)
The aim of the thesis is to assess the influence of the exterior finish works on the total price of a house. The total price of the house consists of the interior price valuated by the cost method and the price of the exterior finishes which were valuated with the help of two methods: the cost method and the simplified method based on the Property Valuation Act. The valuation also covers several periods of time: a new building and 11-, 25-, 50-, 75- and 100-years-old buildings. The thesis focuses on the lifetime of individual parts of the exterior finishes—especially the time after which it is necessary to replace or reconstruct a part. A significant focus was placed on the percents listed in the Act and their correspondence to the actual state. The thesis also deals with the various methods of valuation and their appropriateness in each case. It also mentions the influence of other factors on the price of an estate (the use of different exterior finishes, or a selection of a building location) but these factors were not examined in detail.
