Disparities between males and females in attitudes toward science have been the focus of extensive investigations. Studies have found that females feel intimidated by their male peers in science and mathematics classes, making girls less likely to participate. Their confidence in these areas decreases and they become less likely to follow related career paths. Researchers and educators are at task to find methods to provide equal learning opportunities for all students. The purpose of this action research was to investigate the effects of single-gender grouping and inquiry-based teaching on girls' participation and attitude in science class. This study took place in a second grade classroom at a suburban school in the fall of 2005. Surveys and interviews were used to investigate students' attitudes before and after working with inquiry learning single-gender groups. Using observations, female students' participation was recorded according to the kind of participation they exhibited passive/assisting, active/leading, or active/manipulating. Students maintained journals to record their understanding of science content and rated the lessons. In addition to improving female students' attitudes towards science, inquiry learning fostered an increase in active student participation. Six out of the eight female students perceived that girls participated more in single-gender groups during the study than they did before the study in their regular mixed-gender groups. However, they did not report a change in their own participation in relation to their peers after working in single-gender groups. Further research with control groups was suggested with a larger and more socio-economically diverse population.

Data from standardized test scores shows boys are falling further behind in literacy each year. Thanks to countless hours of research, we can pinpoint some of the causes for this decline. The major challenge educators face is how to keep boys interested in reading while placed in classrooms not necessarily designed to meet their needs. One option being explored is the use of single-sex classrooms. For over 160 years in the United States, public school single-sex classrooms have existed. The thought is that by separating boys and girls for academic classes, certain distractions will be eliminated, the environment can be adapted to accommodate the needs of boys, and teachers can teach in a style more appropriate to the gender. This study investigated how successful single-sex classrooms are in promoting student achievement. By taking data from the National Association for Single-Sex Public Education (NASSPE), and standardized test scores from selected states, the study looked at any statistical differences that occurred within schools containing academic, single-sex classrooms, and coeducational classrooms. Further, the study investigated whether significant differences occurred between gender groups within schools containing single-sex classrooms and those within coeducational ones. Finally, the study looked at presentation methods within these classes. Findings of the study indicated that for single-sex classes to be effective, further research must occur in order to develop best-teaching practices applicable to each gender. The study also demonstrated the need for professional development opportunities for single-sex classroom teachers, as success in such classrooms was found to be possible and demonstrable. Furthermore, the study indicated a need to identify students who would most benefit from inclusion in a single-sex classroom.

The Impact of Effectiveness Leadership on African-American Males and Achievement in a Charter SchoolHenderson, Jacquita 22 May 2017 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors that impact achievement for African-American males in a charter school in hopes of providing insight as well as recommendations into effective ways to close the academic achievement gap between African-American males and their counterparts, specifically the so-called “achievement gap” through examination of leadership and other correlates of a successful school. Lastly, the habits of an effective leader and his impact on the belief system, values and behaviors in an African-American male charter school and the influence he has on teachers, parents and students was examined.
Thirty participants responded to an online survey sent to teachers, parents and students. Two school principals, one past and the other current were interviewed. Data was collected through a single bounded longitudinal study for a period of six years.
A holistic analysis of the entire case was conducted. Through this data collection, a detailed description of the case emerged in which detailed such aspects as the history of the case, the chronology of events, or the day-by-day rendering of the activities of the case. After this description, common or emerging themes were identified in an effort to identify lessons learned from the case. Qualitative analysis of the data provided evidence to support the three themes that emerged from the data collection. This research revealed the most important factor in African-American males and achievement is effective leadership, without that nothing else matters, with that everything is possible. Qualitative analysis of the data revealed the leader must see himself as the instructional leader in his school, have a shared belief system that all children can and will learn, and facilitate a culture that empowers students and teachers alike. Results of this research investigation provide implications and recommendations for all schools educating African-American males in single-gender environments, particularly for the administrators who lead these schools.

Exploring and Understanding Factors Contributing to the Success of a Single Gender School for African American MalesMills, Reuben F. January 2020 (has links)
Urban, suburban and rural school districts across the country are all grappling with issues concerning the plight of students of color and in particular males of color who continue to lag academically behind their female counterparts and in particular their same age male complements. This qualitative research study explored factors and procedural operations contributing to the founding, expansion and ultimate success of a predominantly African American single gender public charter high school serving young men located in a large metropolitan northeastern city. Study participants included teachers, school administrators, school board members, and other school staff who agreed to participate in this study, conducted over a two-year period. At the time of the study, the school enrolled 498 young men and employed approximately 47 staff, which included teachers, non-instructional personnel and administrative staff. In addition to first-hand interviews accounts, findings were documented through field observations, review of anecdotal records such as Staff and Student Handbooks, teacher lesson plans and standardized test scores, which included the state-mandated annual examination. Three primary findings emerged from almost 100 hours of the study and were operationalized bounded by a conceptual framework around three distinct themes: (1) teacher/student developed relationships in the classroom and outside the classroom, (2) school climate and culture, and tangible policies and procedures developed to encourage a peaceful and purposeful school environment, linked to incentives, a documented rigid i disciplinary style approach to education, and (3) the role of consistent and effective school governance from a committed Board of Trustees and the resiliency and sustainable leadership of school administrators. These three conceptual domains formed the basis that this school has made key strides in demonstrating social and academic success in the lives of African American males. The findings also amplify that despite discourse which suggests the underachievement of Black boys in schools, the young men attending West Philadelphia Preparatory Charter School (pseudonym) enrolled with a variety of assets which included mentors, parents who demonstrated immense interest in the success of their children, peer to peer supports, high attendance records and resiliency in negotiating challenges between their communities of residence and the school. These findings are significant for single gender schools, urban public education, charter and independent schools, classroom management and the influence of a Latin-based foundation as they provide the critical ingredients desired to improve K-12 spaces delivering increased opportunities for postsecondary success and future workforce-ready participants. The results of the study tell us that teachers, administrators and other school personnel play a key role in delivering a specific set of actions items which tend to illuminate assets that young men bring to school which eventually contributes to their successful matriculation through high school. Further, results identify key functions of school policy and procedures that produced an academically rich, culturally sensitive and safe environment which contributed to maintaining high academic performance, increased student attendance and a unique set of in school and non-traditional extended day activities for African American males. / Educational Leadership

Positive peer pressure that adolescent boys experience at a single-gender high school in GautengKoekemoer, Leonie 12 1900 (has links)
The purpose of the empirical study is to determine the nature of the peer pressure that boys experience at a single-gender school.
A literature study was conducted on single-gender education as opposed to co-education as well as the phenomenon of peer pressure during adolescence and the factors that might influence peer pressure.
An empirical investigation was conducted involving 221 adolescent boys. The results showed that boys in single-gender schools experience more positive than negative peer pressure. No significant differences were found between the peer pressure of boys at a single-gender school and those at a co-educational school. Motivation and relationship with peers were identified as the two most important variables relating to peer pressure.
Guidelines for parents, teachers, and adolescents were discussed to promote positive peer pressure and to minimise negative peer pressure.
