Stejskalová, Tereza January 2017 (has links)
This dissertation is based on the observation that Herman Melville's "Bartleby, the Scrivener" has become a popular reference in contemporary culture. Not only in the field of literary scholarship but also in the realm of art, political theory and philosophy, it is employed as an example of authentic resistance to power, a counter-intuitive politics that finds its strength in withdrawal, inaction, and inscrutability. The thesis examines the reasons and motives that drive literary scholars, artists and philosophers to read, interpret and use the story in such a way. It does so by analyzing the nature of and reoccurring patterns in Bartleby Industry, the enormous bulk of academic scholarship devoted to the story. It observes how the story is made use of outside of literary scholarship by disciplines, such as art and philosophy, that are not primarily concerned with the literary complexity of the story but use it to work on their own problems of politics and ethics. It pays special attention to its popularity among influential Postmarxist philosophers, namely Slavoj Žižek, Giorgio Agamben and Gilles Deleuze. As the presence of "Bartleby" in the realm of philosophy has to do with a particular function literature performs in that field, in these chapters "Bartleby" becomes more of a guiding thread in order to...

Grillo, Marcelo Gomes Franco 05 August 2009 (has links)

No. of bitstreams: 1 Marcelo Gomes Franco Grillo.pdf: 466176 bytes, checksum: 4d5836ceec2d439d4dd792128bf73752 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2009-08-05 / Universidade Presbiteriana Mackenzie / The present search has as object the right in the slovenian philosopher Slajov i ek´s work. The philosophy of the right is looked for in that author, considering its proximity as the legal marxism and with the critical philosophies. Therefore will be possible two verifications of the right in Zizek: one related to the legal Marxism and other, without being it, but still yes, in general, critical. For the first slope, the Marxist, there is the possibility of a subdivision. i ek has two apprehensions of the legal Marxism. One is more literal to Marx's work, in the comparison with the legal Marxism of Pachukanis, and other, without being similar to the first one, composed by a Marxist critical reading of the democracy, of the capitalism, of the citizenship and of the themes of the minorities and of the environment, as well as a theorise of the psychoanalysis, as it was already done before by the authors of the school of Frankfurt, however being used of Lacan and not of Freud. Specifically for the subjects of the democracy and of the i ek´s citizenship, sometimes, implicitly enters into contradiction with the vision most radical of pachukanis. In order to reinterpret the Marxist theory, the Slovenian author proceeds an analysis of the contemporary society, based in their current problems and with examples of the politics. There is still the possibility of an approach of the theory of pachukanis´s right with the social psychoanalysis starting from the Slovenian author's writings, basing on the previous propositions of Lacan. Regarding to the second slope, the critic Non Marxist, to clarify it, has the development by the author of Lubliana of the themes of the human rights, of the citizenship (the critic of the neoliberalism) and of the possible historical readings of the legal positivism and of the philosophy of right´s Hegel, as well as of the critic of the right being used of a critical assimilation of the "philosophy of right of the exception", of Carl Schmitt, among others, what approximates i ek of the philosophy of the power. On the other hand, the acceptable approach of the exception as the rupture bearing for the revolution will place i ek as an author Post-Marxist.

Politická filosofie Slavoje Žižka / Political philosophy of Slavoj Žižek

Májíček, Jan January 2013 (has links)
In our thesis we will discuss political philosophy of Slavoj Žižek. Our aim is to explore his thoughts in the context of searching for an emancipatory strategy for 21st century. In first par of our thesis we will concentrate on the analysis of functioning of capitalism from the perspective of Lacan's discourse of university. Then we will move to the criticism of static subject in Marxism and dispersed subject in thoughts of post-Marxist radical democrats. We will continue to so called communist hypothesis. In second part of our thesis we will discuss how Žižek's theoretical approach affects his position to the three selected social conflicts and movements. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)

Cities of fantasy: the construction of the desiring subject in urban China

Stetar, Douglas Andrew 27 April 2016 (has links)
Raymond Williams argues that a community’s cultural texts naturally draw upon its lived experience, and are thus a trustworthy expression of life within that community. This thesis explores the subject positions expressed in two contemporary texts—Wang Yuan’s Lipstick (又 红), and Ning Ying’s I Love Beijing (夏日暖洋洋)—to understand how urban Chinese individuals experience and comprehend the transformations convulsing their cities. To facilitate this, my primary goal in this thesis is to build a theoretical framework that uses the psychoanalytic work of Jacques Lacan and Slavoj Žižek to create the concept of the fantasy construction of the desiring subject. Using this concept, and drawing on two aspects of the cultural theories of Walter Benjamin—his heavily citational methodology and his theory of the flâneur—I examine the role of fantasy in the construction of contemporary urban Chinese individuals as desiring subjects. / Graduate / 0305 0295 / stetard@me.com

Porovnávání pohledu na člověka u Karla Marxe, Sigmunda Freuda a jejich následovníků / Comparison of the point of view on human being as seen by Karl Marx, Sigmund Freud and their descendants

Havel, Jan January 2013 (has links)
The aim of this paper it to observe different approaches to human beings. Two major points of view will be that of Karl Marx and of Sigmund Freud. In which apects are their deffinitions of human being, behavior and thinking processes different and in which are they similar? How are their ideas transferred in the work of oher authors and where does it lead? Is it possible to find similar streams in the work of their followers? These are the two major questions that this paper will try to answer. Another meaning this paper should have is to create a meanigful and coherent source of various authors who were involved in examination of human being.

Birkholz, Emma January 2007 (has links)
<p>The starting point of this essay was the frustration I felt after having read the novel Nadja (1928) written by the French surrealist André Breton. The title promises the story of someone called Nadja but the promise stays unfulfilled. Recognition of this phenomenon, where a man writes a book about a woman, but the woman hardly is seen, made me want to examine it further.</p><p>Using the theories of the French psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan I analyze the relation between the male narrator and his female object. I also compare Nadja to a precursor: the novel Bruges-la-morte (1892) of the Belgian symbolist writer Georges Rodenbach. Their stories are, to a large degree, similar. The male main character meets a woman who becomes the center of his world for a short period of time, before he in Nadja rejects her, and in Bruges-la-morte kills her. What differentiates the two books mainly is, that whereas Breton uses Nadja as a tool to emancipate his unconscious in order to be able to create, Hugues tries to replace his dead wife with Jane in order to be able to desire a living object.</p><p>The setting for both stories is the City, which seems to be analogous to the Woman. I examine the possible interpretations of the notion of the City as it appears in the two novels.</p><p>The Lacanian notions of the Thing and objet petit a are essential for the understanding of the function of the Woman in these stories, I argue. Nadja is a femme-enfant, a muse, and the objet petit a for the male poet, i.e. the narrator of Nadja. Jane, the woman in Bruges-la-morte, is a femme fatale, and the Thing for the main character Hugues.</p>

Emphasize the Gap! Towards a Žižekian Definition of Critical-Emancipatory Architecture

Novakovic, Uros 13 August 2013 (has links)
Confronted with issues, whose (socioeconomic) causes cannot be resolved through the modification of the built environment, architectural interventions may often inadvertently aid the reproduction of the problems they seek to resolve. In eliminating symptoms of social inequality, alienation and marginalization, architecture can legitimize the social order out of which they arise. In such situations, architects’ attempts to concern themselves with narrowly practical concerns are insufficient even to their own aims, and in order to properly address the issues facing it, architecture must simultaneously operate as a vehicle for social critique and political emancipation. In the work of philosopher Slavoj Žižek, a critical-emancipatory intervention corresponds to an emphasis of a constitutive tension and discord (“the gap”) within what is commonly perceived as a stable, neutral background. Critique strives not to explicitly reveal existing problems. Instead, it reveals an inherent inconsistency within an implicit, ideological fantasy of order and harmony that allows us to naturalize these problems. Consequently, the critical-emancipatory potential of architecture resides not in its programmatic content nor in its representational image, but in its capacity to disrupt the reassuring affective texture of ideology. Critique resides in a formally subtle (concerning architecture in its narrowest definition as an affective structure), yet politically radical shift in how problems of everyday life are interpreted and processed; re-introducing a minimal sense of disquietude that is both critical and emancipatory. The disquietude, that marks an absence of a fantasy of order and harmony, can, paradoxically, only be sustained as a product of a formally (representationally) ordered and harmonious appearance. The critical-emancipatory disquietude is not a compromise of the order and harmony, but rather a reflection of its uncompromisingly egalitarian nature.

Ideologie a psychoanalýza v kontextu post-strukturalisticky orientované politické teorie / Ideology and psychoanalysis in the context of post-structurally oriented political thought

Katsaros, Denis January 2017 (has links)
The first aim of the thesis is to demonstrate the structural congruence between the discourse theory, as is formulated in the work of political philospoher Ernesto Laclau, and the Lacanian psychoanalytical discouse. Moreover, we claim that any potential attempt to remove or omit the theoretical connection with Lacanian thinking from Laclauan work is illegitimate and thwart a coherence of this work. Through this demonstration we want to reach our second aim, which is to reconstruct a theory of discourse and ideology in particular which can consistently draw upon theories of both Jacques Lacan and Ernesto Laclau. To reinforce our argumentation in context of this second aim, it turned out to be very fruitful to introduce another contemporary thinker, Slavoj Žižek, to our theoretical exposition. Joining these two aims made possible a delineation of post-structurally and at the same time psychoanalytically oriented critical political theory of ideology and society.
