Tyrimo objektas – smulkieji žemės ūkio produkcijos gamintojai. Tyrimo tikslas – nustatyti smulkiųjų žemės ūkio gamintojų formavimosi ir funkcionavimo pagrįstumą bei pagrįsti tolesnes raidos Lietuvoje tendencijas. Tyrimo uždaviniai: 1)identifikuoti smulkiuosius ūkius ir pagrįsti jų tipologiją; 2)nustatyti smulkiųjų ūkių formavimosi priežastis Lietuvoje ir raidą; 3)įvertinti smulkiųjų ūkių funkcionavimo pozityviuosius ir negatyviuosius aspektus; 4)pagrįsti smulkiųjų ūkių tolesnes raidos kryptis ir šį procesą racionalizuojančias žemės ūkio ir kaimo plėtros politikos priemones. Tyrimo metodai: mokslinės literatūros, statistinės bei anketinės apklausos duomenų, teisės šaltinių analizės, loginio modeliavimo, grafinio vaizdavimo metodai. Studijuojant lietuvių ir užsienio autorių publikacijas, statistinės ir anketinės apklausos medžiagą, bei ekonominę situaciją, išnagrinėta smulkiųjų ūkių vieta žemės ūkio sistemoje, atsižvelgiant į ūkininkų apklausos rezultatus nustatytos smulkiųjų ūkių veiklos perspektyvos. / The object of research – small subjects of agricultural production – the creators of private and public goods. The objective of research is to measure the validity of small agricultural producers’ formation and behavior and to base the further tendencies of development in Lithuania. Tasks of research: 1.To identify small farms and to base their typology. 2.To set the reasons and development of small farms formation in Lithuania. 3.To evaluate positive and negative aspects of small farms behavior. 4.To base not only the further trends of small farms development but also means of agricultural and rural development policy that rationalize this process. Research methods: the analysis of scholarly literature, empirical statistical and questionnaire poll data, sources of law and methods of logical modelling and graphic presentment. By reading up publications of Lithuanian and foreign authors’, analysing statistical, questionnaire poll material and economic situation the place of small farms in agricultural system was explored, considering the results of farmers poll the perspectives of small farms activity were set.

Attending about two million small-scale farmers per year, PRONAF contributes to the democratization of access to rural credit among a group of farmers that until then had remained on the margins of the financial system. The objective of the present study is to evaluate the PRONAF`s impact on small-farm agriculture in the municipality of Bonito, in the state of Pernambuco, by using the propensity score matching methodology (PSM). This method allows to compare the performance of a group affected by the implementation of a particular policy (treatment group) with another group that was not affected by the policy (control group). This research compared beneficiaries and non-beneficiaries of PRONAF in the categories “investment”, “production” and “productivity”. The primary data were raised through semi-structured questionnaires applied to an intencional sample of small-scale farmers in the municipality of Bonito. The survey results show that PRONAF did not produce the expected impacts. Only in relation to the variable “investiment value”, the program had a positive impact, although not significant. Concerning the other variables the PRONAF had a negative but not significant impact. These results are consistent with those found in other reviews and indicate that the PRONAF primarily benefits those family farmers who are capitalized and integrated into agribusiness. / O Programa Nacional de Fortalecimento da Agricultura Familiar (PRONAF) é uma das políticas públicas mais importantes voltadas para a agricultura familiar. Atendendo cerca de dois milhões de agricultores familiares por ano, o PRONAF contribui para a democratização do acesso ao crédito rural entre um grupo de produtores rurais que até então tinha ficado às margens do sistema financeiro. O objetivo do presente estudo é avaliar o impacto do PRONAF sobre os agricultores familiares no município de Bonito, Estado de Pernambuco, mediante o uso do propensity score matching (PSM; Bras. “Escore de propensão para pareamento”). Este método permite comparar o desempenho de um grupo afetado pela implantação de determinada política (grupo de tratamento) com outro grupo que não foi afetado pela política (grupo de controle). No caso desta pesquisa foram comparados beneficiários e nãobeneficiários do PRONAF nas variáveis “valor de investimento (R$/ano)”, “valor de produção (R$/ano)”, “valor de produção por trabalhador (R$/ano)” e “valor de produção por hectare (R$/ano). Os dados primários foram levantados mediante a aplicação de questionários semiestruturados a uma amostra intencional de agricultores familiares do município de Bonito. Os resultados encontrados nesta pesquisa mostram que o PRONAF não produziu os impactos esperados. Somente na variável “valor de investimento” o programa teve um impacto positivo, porém não significante. Em relação às demais variáveis o PRONAF teve um impacto negativo embora não significante. Os resultados desta pesquisa são condizentes com aqueles encontrados em outras avaliações e indicam que o PRONAF beneficia sobretudo os agricultores familiares mais capitalizados e integrados à agroindústria.

Direct-Marketing Strategy Conceptualization for Small Farmers in Iowa: Decision-Making Activities and Their Parallels to the Design Process

abstract: This study explores the processes of designing strategies. The context of this research is scoped to the direct-marketing activities of small farm operators in eastern Iowa. The research intent is to explore and articulate trends in decision-making processes that assist small farm operators in eastern Iowa with direct marketing farm-to-table products, to explore and articulate how the design process creates differentiated value, and to explore and articulate the relationship between the design process and the way that small farm operators in eastern Iowa conceptualize their direct-marketing strategies. The research design takes a post-positivist approach and uses a grounded theory methodology. The study does not have a starting hypothesis but instead starts with the research intent described previously. Convergent mixed methods and a flexible plan are used for data collection including semi-structured interviews and surveys with key concepts operationalized into Likert scales. The participants are selected from eastern Iowa farmers’ markets and Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) directories. For the qualitative data analysis, a grounded theory method is used to code interview response data, categorize the codes into related groups, and let the themes and sub-themes emerge from the data. For the quantitative data analysis, descriptive and inferential statistics are calculated on the aggregate data set. The study finds that small farm operators are making strategic decisions about marketing mix variables such as product quality and relationship building, there are statistically significant correlations between design concepts and direct-marketing strategies, and that farmers designed their strategies by using the design process. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Design 2019

Consumers' perceptions and preferences for sustainably-produced fruits and vegetables: the case of organic, local, and small farm

Amanor-Boadu / This study focuses on determining what key differences predispose a consumer to regularly purchase and be willing to pay a premium for sustainably-produced fruits and vegetables. Organic, local, and small farm are the three cases used in the study. The research used a structured questionnaire to conduct an online survey of U.S. internet users with email addresses in the spring of 2011 with logit and ordered logit regression used as the analytical tools. Cost was the most important factor for consumers who did not purchase organic and local products more frequently while unavailability was the principal reason for not consuming produces from small farms. The study showed consumers of small farm products often (98.5 percent of the time) consume local fruits and vegetables also but not the other way around. The relevant socio-economic factors for determining organic purchasing frequency were gender, household size, and education. For small farm they were the ability to influence local change and the respondents’ frequency of purchase of local products. Socio-economic characteristics did not prove to be a factor in local purchasing decisions. Regular purchasers of organic fruits and vegetables provided a consistent perception of organic products with the USDA certified organic definition. Local consumers reported that taste and freshness are the most defining characteristics of local products while small farm consumers could not provide a clear picture of the definitional statements defining fruits and vegetables produced by a small farm. This implied that there is need for more work by small farm producers to differentiate themselves in the market. On the contrary, both local and organic producers have a clear point of differentiation to reach their customers. Industry marketing efforts can be greatly improved by focusing on the characteristics of the consumers they are trying to reach. Our results can be further investigated by completing the following recommendations. First, to conduct more targeted studies such as interviews or focus groups, second, to gain a deeper understanding of how consumers perceive these attributes and third to conduct a comprehensive study on the similarities and differences between small farm and local consumers.

Adaptação de um checklist de boas práticas de fabricação para agroindústrias familiares com potencial de adesão ao SUSAF-RS

Este projeto tem por objetivo desenvolver um checklist de boas práticas de fabricação (BPF) adaptado ao público das agroindústrias familiares de pequeno porte (AFPP) produtoras de embutidos, de modo que sirva como ferramenta de auxílio na recomendação das AFPP ao SUSAF-RS (Sistema Estadual Unificado de Sanidade Agroindustrial Familiar e de Pequeno Porte do RS). Foram visitadas 20 agroindústrias situadas nas regionais da Emater de Lajeado e Soledade, onde foi aplicado o checklist de BPF original (BRASIL, 2002) bem como o checklist adaptado desenvolvido. As agroindústrias foram classificadas em G1, G2 e G3 conforme o percentual de conformidade (C). A proposta do checklist adaptado se justificou uma vez que o instrumento proposto apresentou resultado de agroindústrias classificadas com G1 (>75% C) significativamente superior em relação à classificação obtida das mesmas agroindústrias submetidas ao checklist original. O checklist adaptado mostrou que a maioria das agroindústrias foi classificada como pertencente ao G2 com média de conformidade de 59,2%. Somente 4 agroindústrias, além da unidade onde foi aplicado o piloto, obtiveram mais de 75% de C sendo classificadas como G1. Todas estas estão registradas em Serviços de Inspeção Municipais já aderidos ao SUSAF, e uma apresenta registro no Serviço de Inspeção Estadual. Além destas, 8 agroindústrias foram classificadas no G2 e 7 foram classificadas no G3. As principais não conformidades (NC) identificadas nas classificações G2 e G3 foram relacionadas à gestão documental (SG5) e falhas no quesito higiênico-sanitário (SG2), sendo que 5 das 8 agroindústrias classificadas como G2 apresentaram C superior a 65%. Nestes casos, a gestão documental foi o principal gargalo para o não atingimento dos 75% de C preconizado. Ressalta-se que das 7 agroindústrias classificadas como G3, 4 apresentaram índices preocupantes no quesito sanitário (SG2) com C inferior a 25%. O trabalho evidenciou que as AFPPs localizadas em municípios cujos SIMs não estão estruturados, atrelado à presença de RTs pouco atuantes, ocasionam baixo índice de BPF, pois carecem de informações técnicas e capacitação para implantação das mesmas. Percebeu-se que a realidade da AFPP é distinta à da indústria de larga escala. Por isso, parece justo que os dois segmentos sejam avaliados de forma diferenciada, justificando o propósito do projeto. / This project deals with the adaptation of a Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) checklist for application in small farm agroindustry producing sausages. The objective will be to enable the proposed checklist to serve as an aid tool in the recommendation of this profile of agroindustries to SUSAF-RS (Unified State System of Agroindustrial Health and Small Porte of RS). Twenty agroindustries distributed in the regional municipalities of Emater de Lajeado and Soledade were visited, where the original BPF checklist (BRASIL, 2002) was applied as well as the adapted checklist. The agroindustries were classified in G1, G2 and G3 according to the percentage of compliance (C). The proposal of the checklist adapted to measure BPF in the scope of the small farm agroindustry was justified, since the proposed instrument presented a result of agroindustries classified with G1 (> 75% C) significantly higher than the classification obtained from the same agroindustries submitted to the original checklist. The adapted checklist showed that most agro-industries were classified as belonging to G2 with a mean of 59.2% compliance. Only 4 agroindustries, besides the unit where the pilot was applied, obtained more than 75% of C being classified as G1, therefore, with GMP implanted. All of these are registered in Municipal Inspection Services that have already joined the SUSAF. In addition, 8 agro-industries were classified in G2 and 7 were classified in G3.
