Moral Panics in a Globalised Media Landscape : Case Studies and Implications for Society and Policy

Karastanchev, Vasil January 2024 (has links)
This thesis explores the phenomenon of moral panics in American society, focusing on three cases: the automatic knife panic in the 1950s, the migrant caravan panic in 2018, and the LGBTQ+ "groomer" panic in 2022. Utilizing Stanley Cohen’s concept of moral pan- ics, expanded by David Garland and Goode, the research aims to understand the origins, amplification of risks, perceived threats, and socio-political consequences of these moral panics. The methodology involves content, narrative, and discourse analysis of legislative acts, academic literature, and contemporary media coverage. Findings reveal that interest groups, namely media and political figures, significantly contribute to constructing and am- plifying moral panics. Exaggerated perception of risks to society, either through false claim-making or cultural trauma, drove a moral panic in each of these cases, leading to increased social control through legislation and the stigmatization and discrimination of minority groups. This research contributes to ongoing efforts to combat prejudice and social injustice by shedding light on the societal ramifications of moral panic. It underscores the need for further investigation into the motivations of interest groups to spread moral panics and strategies for preventing their occurrence in a globalised media landscape. The study opens discussions on media manipulation and human rights.

Social Control and Self-Control Factors Associated with Interpersonal Violence in Adolescent Females

Mavis, Beverly J. 05 1900 (has links)
Adolescent females are committing an increasing number of violent interpersonal acts. This study used the qualitative technique of focus group interviews to explore social control and self-control factors which impact such behaviors. Forty-seven girls aged 10-18 years described situations and events where interpersonal violence might be used and also what might prevent such acts. For the girls interviewed, social controls were the predominant means of controlling the use of interpersonal violence. Family and peer groups were the most powerful social controls, whether positive or negative. Self-control was deemed important but most girls lacked either the skills or desire to engage in self-control. Violence prevention programs need to teach techniques for improving self-control and increasing self-concept to be most effective.

Juvenile delinquency in Saudi Arabia

AlRomaih, Yousef Ahmed 01 January 1985 (has links)
The present study involved an examination of the delinquency problem in Saudi Arabia within the framework of social control theory. Specifically, the study was based on the thesis set forth by Travis Hirschi, i.e., that delinquent acts result when an individual's bond to society is weak or broken. Also taken into account, however, were the findings from the research of Wiatrowski, et al. that suggest a need for a) some modifications in Hirschi 's conceptual framework and b) inclusion of socio-economic factors in the social control model.

Impact of Schools' Social Bonding on Chronic Truancy: Perceptions of Middle School Principals

Gentle-Genitty, Carolyn Sherlet 18 March 2009 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / No longer is the family the only unit of care for children and their education; schools are now the primary unit of education and are responsible for at least 6-8 hours of student connectedness. Yet, one in every 100 US students is truant. Among students ages 14-17, the number of truants is one in 10. In one township in Indiana, one in every three students is a chronic truant. Understanding why children disengage from school before reaching the compulsory attendance age of 16 is essential. This study explored the relationship of schools’ social bonding opportunities and principals’ perceptions of students’ social bond on rates of chronic truancy in middle schools. Chronic truancy was defined as 10 or more absences reported to the Indiana Department of Education during the 2006-2007 school year. Methods. A cross-sectional online survey consisting of 81 items was administered using Survey Monkey™. The list of participants was generated from the Indiana Department of Education’s online database of middle and junior high schools in Indiana. Of the 429 principals invited to participate, 144 responded. The final sample consisted of 99 public schools. Secondary data was used to compare school demographic characteristics. Results. Using multiple regression analyses, the results showed that schools’ social bonding opportunities and principals’ perceptions of students’ social bonding in middle school were positively but not significantly related to rates of chronic truancy. The variables in the model of best fit accounted for 16% of the change in rates of chronic truancy. Principals reported doing well at creating opportunities for students to attach and be involved in school but that they needed to improve on building relationships to effectively increase social bonding in their middle schools. Conclusions. Student success is dependent on not only what the student brings to the school environment but what the school environment provides to the student. Creating an environment for students to thrive and succeed relies on the opportunities for social bonding in the middle school. Truancy prevention and school engagement is a shared responsibility.

Williams, Ja'nae A. 20 May 2019 (has links)
The intention of this study is to contribute to research on Black women and to bring awareness to Black women's experiences, as they navigate social institutions. This study examines the perception of the intersectionality of race and gender impacts their awareness of police violence against Black women. Researchers measured respondent's perceptions/attitudes regarding intersectionality and their awareness of people who had been victimized by police violence. The quantitative study is comprised of statements regarding patriarchy and/or sexism and statements concerning racism and/or the lack thereof. The data analysis indicates that respondents' awareness and sensitivity to racism along with their perception of sexism and patriarchy is associated with their awareness of police victims. The researcher's findings found that the intersectionality of race and gender impacts their awareness of police violence against Black women.

Capitalist Reproduction in Schooling: The social control of marginalized students through zero tolerance policies

Wickline, Mary K 01 January 2019 (has links)
Due to increasing media focus, there has been growing concern that U.S. students and the school environment are increasingly violent, leading the public to believe that school discipline should become more strict and punitive (Giroux 2003; Schept, Wall, & Brisman 2014). However, scholars argue that there is little evidence that current practices of school discipline have made the school environment safer, but instead have criminalized the school and are disproportionately targeting students of color and disabled students (Beger 2002; Civil Rights Project 2000; Gregory, Skiba, & Noguera 2010; Hirschfield 2008; McNeal & Dunbar 2010; U.S. Government Office of Accountability 2018). The expansion of zero-tolerance policies and the surveillance culture in schools have played a large role in the creation of the school-to-prison pipeline, in which students are increasingly being suspended and expelled from school and coming in contact with the juvenile justice system. This research explores the relation that zero tolerance policies function as the neoliberal social control mechanism to control students who are seen to have “no market value and [are] identified as flawed consumers because of their associations with crime and poverty, redundancy and expendability” (Sellers & Arrigo 2018, p. 66). Zero-tolerance policies function as the latest manifestation of capitalist reconstitution of educational institutions, through curricula, student conduct codes, disciplinary procedures, and the hidden curriculum, constructed of the language of capitalism, disproportionately targeting students of color (Bowles & Gintis 2011). A series of OLS regression analyses were conducted to analyze how community partners and school resource officer involvement impact the rate of suspension, expulsion, and combined school disciplinary measures using the School Survey on Crime and Safety Survey 2005-06 data. It was found that community partners and school resource officers have a positive and negative relationship with disciplinary rates. This research further substantiates that racial and ethnic minority students receive disproportionate rates of discipline.

O quadrilátero da educação na saúde em movimento : a perspectiva do controle social no caleidoscópio

Alencar, Heloísa Helena Rousselet de January 2014 (has links)
This dissertation is a Case Study, done in conjunction with the state capital in the south of Brazil. It looked to bring the perspective of social control in implementing national policies on Health Education to the scene, and at the same time, it showed the emergence of a policy of this nature in the Municipal Health Council concerned. The expressive linking of the dissertation contemplated an analysis on health education, teaching-service integration, techno-assistance models in health care, social control and participation in the health sector. The methodological path was structured based on related documentary research and official publications. The conceptual base that was used in the analysis was the Health Education Quadrilateral, created by Ceccim and Feuerwerkwer. The approach on field research located interlocutors of reference identified with the 4 vertices of the Quadrilateral, allowing one to see the movements of conversations, interactions, disputes and design or redesigning of the results. The document analysis was used to compile the political and normative context and semi-structured interviews were used to compile the complex qualitative data (opinions, memories, impressions). The expression of a process in movement led to the understanding of a "perspective of the social control in a kaleidoscope", the inedited presence of popular participation and that of the health care advisors as participants in the field of possibilities on education policy and development of the employees, keeping the collective interest in a health care system with universal access and features of comprehensive care in mind. The social control action was strongly integrated into the "politicization" of the teaching-learning actors, like faculty, students, tutors and residents; and the logical and strategic drive for university-society integration in health care.
